When Douglas mentions he's been to Silent Hill "once, on a massing persons case" I think it's a reference to James Sunderland or maybe someone else from from SH2.
It's implied, but connects to SH4 so pretty solid. the novelization of SH2 goes with the 'water' ending. From a realistic standpoint. A grieving husband went to their 'special place' to end it all because without her, he had nothing. Don't think James would've just ghosted his Dad.
Could be any of the games earlier in the timeline to this one, really. It could even be SH1 for Kaufmann or Lisa. Possibly just Alessa/Cheryl. Could even be a very subtle indication that SH1's Good ending is the canon ending with Cybil having gone missing.
I think that it's just a way of showing how Douglas is familiar with the town on some level, and also kind of fits in with the place as mysterious and untrustworthy. It could literally be anyone, and I'm not really fond of the idea of one ending for SH2 becoming canon over the others.
My theory is that Douglas was looking for Eddie, the “gutless fatso” who ended up in Silent Hill because he was on the run for murder. James kills him no matter which route you take in SH2, so Eddie’s “disappearance” could apply to any canon.

I got this game a couple years ago and haven't got around to playing it yet. I remember playing a demo of it a bunch of times, but that's it. Silent Hill 2 is in my top 5 games of all time. I think I'll start it tonight.
I just finished the Silent Hill 2 video and I see this beautiful new video in my notifications. You're the best son. You know how to make your Dad proud ❤️
Silent Hill 4 is still the scariest one for me, i can only imagine what horrors would have been brought upon the gaming world, had they kept the original uncut version of it. Hope you do a video about it aswell, since you did a great job on this one.
Robbie the Rabbit being here means this counts as an Easter upload. And man, this is gonna be a dang good treat. I LOVE this game. Vinny’s playthrough stuck with me quite a bit, this game strikes such a divine balance between Silent Hill 1’s lore and Silent Hill 2’s more psychological angles.
Idk know if it’s the voice acting or just that I used to be a teenage girl myself, but I find Heather to be the most compelling of the silent hill protagonists, for me at least.
I love how this game includes fears that women tend to feel on there day to day to fit the female protagonist, silent hill adapts to who's in it and it dose so in ways that can be hard to pick up on at times but oh god is it affective. I might be thinking of the wrong scene but I remember one scene where Heather get pushed by train tracks and I never realised that that was a common fear for women before I saw more people talk about it. this video doesn't alway pick up on those feeling that the game so perfectly displays however you did a great job on picking up on things I never noticed, thank you for letting me see this game in even more detail than before :)
This is a a real Easter treat, fuck yeah I was waiting for this one. I had just started replaying my original PlayStation copies of the original Silent Hill games cause these reviews inspired me to relive the haunting beauty of these games. Silent Hill 3 was always my personal favorites and one of the first game OST’s I ever owned.
These videos have been great for me, someone who’s never played and silent hill games. The in-depth analysis of the game and it’s development is fun to learn about.
This, IMO, is the best in all of the series but that's probably because they wrote the fear that women experiences perfectly with Heather and I am biased with that haha. Monster designs falls into that as well. They have a theme which I don't think you noticed--well, the more hinthintnudgenudge theme. Tangomushi explained it really well. Also, Heather has such the perfect personality as a teenager in the original. I just really like how they did this game and I am so happy to see that you made a video of it! Thank you for sharing this video! I always adore all the retrospective of these games!
There’s a reveal that happens when the main character gets home from the subway that made me quit the game for a bit. I just had to walk around the house to recover for a while. What a huge gut punch.
Imagine trying to avoid "spoilers" debating a >20 year old game within the comment section of an full analyze video. 🤡 Makes the persons from SH games look like reasonable academics.
So, good video, one thing I would point out is that some of your critiques make more sense when you've been a teenage girl. Like the design of the first boss. Being with a guy for the first time can be scary. I was the same age as Heather when I first played this game and it resonated with me a lot, it's my favorite SH game still.
Even to this day, the story cutscenes in this game (like where the man says "Oh, you think they look lie monsters?") could actually look like a cutscene from a game nowadays, it's that good looking.
The Vincent cutscene where he talks w Claudia about her child abuse, and the sync of the music with when he says "kick you" is just... still gives me shivers. What an excellent delivery. I love this game a lot
This game is almost two decades old, and look at it, I dont know how a PS2 was able to run this game. Anyway, this was the end of the franchise for me, I know most fans also like 4 too, but it felt too different in my opinion, and 3 was the perfect way to end the trilogy.
Another great video, son! The way this game is able to blend the strengths of 1 & 2 - while remaining its own thing - is something I think many trilogies yearn for. And it’s not easy.
The body in the wall is NOT a reference to Metal Gear Solid. It’s a reference to “The Black Cat”, a Poe story and a movie. Heather even says this when you inspect the body.
Good job, son! Nothing like a meaty pulsating egg like this for Easter tho I'm surprised I thought for sure you would talk more about valtiel, the stalking demon who fallows Heather during the game and the dragging cutscenes when you die but none the less great retrospect
You absolutely nailed the feeling that End of Small Sanctuary invokes. Always felt that way about it but haven’t thought of a way to describe it as well. Proud of you, son.
@@spiralofants1236 Perhaps, but who would hire a PI to look for Eddie? He seemed like he had nobody, and I doubt the police would hire Douglas. I definitely think Frank hired Douglas to look for his son. Also, I don't think Eddie killed a kid. I'm fairly certain he killed a dog and shot someone in the knee.
Cannot express how much i love your videos and 𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 videos like this that recap 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘 significant event in the game. Stopped my most recent SH3 playthrough around Halfway through the game; This video allows me to recap and refesh my memory on where i was without having to reset my whole playthrough. Amazing work, thank you so much.
Still early in the video but a lot of the symbolism in this game is about being a young female. And the struggles they go through. So that first boss, while the design isn’t anything special, is meant be very… phallic we’ll say. Also the poking in and out of holes is self-explanatory. Great video so far, son. Proud of you.
Besides the phallic shape, it's also supposed to foreshadow Heather's connections to Alessa and Silent Hill 1. The Splitworm is a combination of the Split Head (the first boss, and you damage it by hitting it in its mouth when it opens) and the Twinfeeler (worm boss fought at the bottom of a mall who borrows in and out of the ground), with the fears and symbolism they held carrying over into 3. 3 is heavily into elements repeating in cycles, so the first boss being a remix of bosses from 1 helps set up that idea early, on top of incorporating aspects of Heather's unique fears of a teenager into the design.
Hey, thanks to your videos on the first three Silent Hill games I finally decided to play them myself. Even if I know all the spoilers those never affected me much, and I love the horror genre in general but horror games were always too immersive for me (I still screach when a Minecraft spider jumps at me). But I'm just so captivated by the story that I need to experience this myself. So keep up the good work, I know your channel will become big cause your videos are just quality and at first I just needed some background noise but I ended up tuning in and binged your videos. Your voice is nice to listen to and that's hard to find at times with these kinds of videos. Looking forward to your future uploads! Also, my friend is a big fan of Silent Hill and she's delighted I am finally gonna play those games haha.
I barely remember playing this one, but it's by far my favorite in the series, I think mostly because it was a direct sequel to the first and after the second game that really surprised me when they revealed it all, amazing game, awesome videos!
"Bloody rabbit *animatronics* " Son, you play too much FNAF; Robbie is just a plain ol' mascot costume being worn by a corpse. (For real tho SH3 is probably my favorite in the series for just being so visceral) Oh, cool, MGS retrospectives in the future, I like that.
So excited to see another video from you so soon, Son! You're really pushing hard on this release schedule - don't forget to take some time for yourself too!
I'd like to thank you for this series, I can't play horror games because i get scared easily and would probably not sleep for a week... but the stories these games tell are so interesting, and I love learning more about them :)
This game is a classic but it feels overlooked due to SH2's popularity. SH2 is my favorite and number one all time favorite game but, as an overall game I'd say SH3 is the best in the series. AWESOME video again!
SH3 is the Silent Hill I have the best memories of. If forced to choose, it’s likely my favorite one, and since I did start at the beginning with the first game, it’s hard not to choose the first as my favorite. I did become a huge fan of Silent Hill as a kid after my play through of the first game. That being said, that puts me in rare company of SH2 being my third favorite Silent Hill. I realize Silent Hill 2 has the best story by far and I completely understand why it’s regarded as the best Silent Hill. It’s difficult to rank them.
I understand the nostalgia. I was the same way with the resident evil games. 4 was my favorite for the longest time because of how much I played it as a kid and have so many memories with it. But I recently let go of my nostalgia bias and have a new ranking for RE games.
i remember playing this game for the first time and boy, the church and hospital really freaked me out. that one room in the church full of closers made me panic everytime I had to go through it lol
The puzzles feeling if they don't have a real basis or meaning feels weird to me because that's how if eel about SH2, 3 has memorably realistic ones like using rings to grab some keys, a hangar to grab a ladder, a bottle to retrieve some fuel from a machine. While SH2 felt so random to me reaching into holes in the wall, placing coins into a desk, etc.
I really enjoyed your deep dives into the Silent Hill series so far! They're well thought out and super interesting to follow! I can't wait for your video on SH4! Even though it was a bit clunky, it was somehow the first game I found from the series, and is one of my favorites. It had such a striking tone and atmosphere that has stuck with me for years
Excellent video. Probably my second fav SH game. Now on to the one that makes less sense! At least to me, maybe you will be able to elucidate SH4's story for me in ways other long form youtube videos haven't been able to. You seem pretty good at that, actually.
I remember i broke up with my first girlfriend. My parents had just separated and i moved away from home for the first time all within a short space of time. I was in a new city in my first apartment 1 month before my flatmates would move in. I had this big house to myself and a copy of silent hill 1. The world already seemed hostile and quite indifferent, i think i was sad and scared in a way that was new to me at the time. This context as my introduction to the Silent Hill series, paired with the games music and over all "feel" has it taking a strange place in my own memory my lifes journey so far. Thanks for uploading.
I'm not your dad, but I do like the content. Didn't know this was only a day old, but speaks to how much it speaks to your content I binged the silent hill episodes out so far...to run out lol...soon...soon

I always had a Game+ save file on memory.

A spring treat if you will.
Idk know if it’s the voice acting or just that I used to be a teenage girl myself, but I find Heather to be the most compelling of the silent hill protagonists, for me at least.
Heather is one of the best female protagonist and best silent hill protagonist
The subconscious fear baked into SH3 has always been more relatable than SH2 to me. That relatability is what makes me put it in such high regard.
One of the reasons silent hill 2 the movie sucked you cast Shawn bean u had one job
What was the reveal?
@@blankbrandHarry being murdered......
Imagine trying to avoid "spoilers" debating a >20 year old game within the comment section of an full analyze video. 🤡
Makes the persons from SH games look like reasonable academics.
The sound track in this game was perfect
This game is almost two decades old, and look at it, I dont know how a PS2 was able to run this game.
Anyway, this was the end of the franchise for me, I know most fans also like 4 too, but it felt too different in my opinion, and 3 was the perfect way to end the trilogy.
Another great video, son! The way this game is able to blend the strengths of 1 & 2 - while remaining its own thing - is something I think many trilogies yearn for. And it’s not easy.
Just saying: Harry Mason’s death broke my heart. I loved that dude
The body in the wall is NOT a reference to Metal Gear Solid. It’s a reference to “The Black Cat”, a Poe story and a movie. Heather even says this when you inspect the body.
Fun fact: @ 0:09:25 the corpse's head the Closer is eating is actually the character model of ...
Angela of SH2.
Good job, son! Nothing like a meaty pulsating egg like this for Easter tho I'm surprised I thought for sure you would talk more about valtiel, the stalking demon who fallows Heather during the game and the dragging cutscenes when you die but none the less great retrospect
the sh3 worm boss is a call back to the sh1 worm boss. it's not really out of place when you think about it.
I'm watching all this guy's retrospectives for silent hill , what a great work this guy does in this channel ,major props !
You absolutely nailed the feeling that End of Small Sanctuary invokes. Always felt that way about it but haven’t thought of a way to describe it as well. Proud of you, son.
That silent hill 2 reference of Douglas looking for James or Maria a lot of people don’t catch that
Who would have sent/hired Douglas though?
@@WhirlingMusic James's father, Frank Sunderland.
@@Rilumai maybe. Its more likely he was looking for Eddie, who was on the run for killing a kid.
Yeah I was actually about to say the same thing.
YES! I was waiting for this one the most. Now let's see what you have to say for yourself, Son.
So many Silent Hill 3 reviews lately. What a time to be alive
My overall favorite out of the series I've beaten this over a dozen times.
The fact that all of the UFO endings connect to each other, (at least as of SH3), is great
Just a little tip about the maul, you can do an overhead swing by holding the attack button instead of just tapping it! 😊
Silent Hill 3 was my first entry into this amazing video game series & dang did love this franchise
I barely remember playing this one, but it's by far my favorite in the series, I think mostly because it was a direct sequel to the first and after the second game that really surprised me when they revealed it all, amazing game, awesome videos!
Great video, I really enjoyed SH 1 & 2 and never really gave this one a chance. Seems like I missed out!
U missed out big time
"Bloody rabbit *animatronics* "
Son, you play too much FNAF; Robbie is just a plain ol' mascot costume being worn by a corpse.
(For real tho SH3 is probably my favorite in the series for just being so visceral)
Oh, cool, MGS retrospectives in the future, I like that.
So excited to see another video from you so soon, Son! You're really pushing hard on this release schedule - don't forget to take some time for yourself too!
My favourite silent hill always sways between 2 and 3 they are both just phenomenal
I'd like to thank you for this series, I can't play horror games because i get scared easily and would probably not sleep for a week... but the stories these games tell are so interesting, and I love learning more about them :)
The sound track in silent hill is s so original, beautifully haunting, and memorable.
Silent Hill 3 is my personal favorite in the series. Just some unspoken charm about it for me.
Claudia always reminds me of the actress Tilda Swinton, she should played her in the movie adaptation.
Awesome work as always, son!
I don't know how you keep pumping this high quality hour-long videos each week, I'm seriously amazed at your skills!
Thanks for the great video son, your mother would be proud 🙏
Thanks Dad!
Silent Hill is like a fun, spooky campfire story. Silent Hill 2 is a horrifying yet beautiful poem. Silent Hill 3 is just depraved lol
Can't wait for Silent Hill 4. It's my favorite game in the franchise.
This game is a classic but it feels overlooked due to SH2's popularity. SH2 is my favorite and number one all time favorite game but, as an overall game I'd say SH3 is the best in the series. AWESOME video again!
46:21 I couldn't help myself and laugh to the obvious responce of "Because he robbed a bank".
I still have the original music cd that came with the game. My favorite of all the series. I finally got all the achievements last year.
i remember playing this game for the first time and boy, the church and hospital really freaked me out. that one room in the church full of closers made me panic everytime I had to go through it lol
The scariest part of this game was the music before the Alessa fight on the carousel. Made my skin crawl.
Silent hill 3 was my personal favorite in the series.
My very first Silent Hill and my favorite.
Just commenting to say i love End of Small Sanctuary, too. Might be my favorite track in the series as well. Has a very hazy, orange afternoon feeling
I really enjoyed your deep dives into the Silent Hill series so far! They're well thought out and super interesting to follow!
I can't wait for your video on SH4! Even though it was a bit clunky, it was somehow the first game I found from the series, and is one of my favorites.
It had such a striking tone and atmosphere that has stuck with me for years
Wow the guitar and rhythm for this game is so good to hear. Timeless
Excellent video. Probably my second fav SH game. Now on to the one that makes less sense! At least to me, maybe you will be able to elucidate SH4's story for me in ways other long form youtube videos haven't been able to. You seem pretty good at that, actually.
Almost back to back videos. My boys so talented
Thanks for uploading.
aww
You are a content machine! Just as surprising is the quality, and thoughtfulness.
I'm not your dad, but I do like the content. Didn't know this was only a day old, but speaks to how much it speaks to your content I binged the silent hill episodes out so far...to run out lol...soon...soon
Good job boy, always knew you were my favorite.
Hello Son I'm so happy I found your channel not only are the games you've covered have been some amazing games but also your presentation is top quality keep up the good work im.proud of you
I had a vision of these videos not being in depth video essays but in fact the single form of communication from YFS to his dad.
0:13:44 Fun Fact: IF you have a game save from SH2 on your memory card, then you can go to the stall on the other end and select "yes" to the prompt that shows up there for an Easter Egg. If you don't have a game save from SH2 this option will NOT be available.
Note: I can't remember whether just any SH2 game save will do or a game+ save file you get from completing SH2 is required. I always had a Game+ save file on memory.
I really hope we find out what the original concept of SH3 was going to be one day.
Holy... I never noticed that the "what do you prefer, to give pain or to receive it?" presents worked like that... Good video *SON*
This was my first silent hill I was like 12 when I bought it. I returned it immediately. I couldn't even leave the starting room because it looked so scary. This wasn't my first horror game I played RE and other horror games too.
Edit: this isn't it, the one I returned the character starts in a hotel room not sure which one was it
I love every SH game out there, I don't even care what anyone says about Downpour and Homecoming either... I just need Book of Memories for my Vita and my collection is complete:)
I love Homecoming. 2 and 3 are the best ones. I can't seem to get into 4 (played for2 hours and lost interest) and I haven't played Downpour yet. I won't play the first due to its controls but I have seen a playthrough. It was alright.
@@WhirlingMusic yeah 4 is hard to get into but the story behind the whole plot is amazing. Lol yeah Pt.1 was clunky controls but thats old school for ya lol and i love watching playthroughs but its not the same as being there yourself making the moves:) But play downpour!! i still hate how it got bad reviews :(
My guy youve been pumping these out with some really impressive quality, like seriously these videos have been fantastic. I just binged the other sh videos this week. really looking forward to sh4 video, hope you dont burn yourself out tho, i really enjoy the way you view and analyze games.
because your my favotie son ill take you out for some laser tag and pizza later
the way you say 'the katana is the best melee weapon in the base game' makes it sound like there's dlc, lol
@YourFavoriteSon 23:09 NOT A REFERENCE TO METAL GEAR SOLID, a reference to the Lucio Fulci film The Black Cat. A man at war with a cat hides a woman in a wall, unbeknownst to him along with the cat and he's caught when the police hear the cat screaming. SHOULDA SILENCED THAT CAT, GET IT
Absolutely killing it with the content, Son! Wasn't expecting you to bang out a retrospective one after another like this but, glad you have. Gonna run out of SH games at this rate!
