I remember when my mom got the first game, it's still the only game to this day that ever gave me nightmares as a kid, same with the second one I was about 9 or 10 when she got a hold of it. I was seven when 2 came out, and now that I am 30 I am super excited to get a PS5 and play the remake of 2.

Like, he never stutters, never flubs or fucks up, and never has even in his earliest vids. Clearly speaking and conveying thoughts is one of those things that's easy to take for granted until you realize that shit can be quite difficult without putting the work in. I had to get a couple people within the VA system to give me a hand on doing that for interviews, and I'm still not that great at it. I'm just more aware of how much I suck at it hah.

All retcon issues aside, the worst part of this game for me was the portrayal of Alyssa. they took all the inspiration for her from the movie and not the original game.
Yeah... Origins really leaned into the movie's thing of Alessa being evil and out for revenge, and Cheryl being the good part of Alessa. The games spell out that Alessa was always a good and loving person, despite everything that happened to her.
I feel like this could've benefited from Sam Barlow's second interview that addresses it pretty well: "Unfortunately there were some problems there and the game they were making was not in the best shape. We hadn't done anything to deserve to work on Silent Hill, but we worked very well as a team, had strong skill sets and, well... we were available. At that point there wasn't a huge amount of time to get the game done. But we insisted that we needed to re-do a lot of the game in order to make it something that wouldn't embarrass the franchise. The game we shipped wasn't perfect - and I'd personally question even the idea of a prequel to Silent Hill - but it was much, much better than what might have been." Origins needed time the studio wasn't given, and most of it's problem are rooted in that. This was a story written and redesigned in a week, and crunched out in a YEAR. It puts the game in a weird place of being sub optimal, but at the same time impressive for the devs and I can't help but respect them dearly for their work in trying to honor the franchise. I'm just really glad they got green lit to make their own installment with SM because they deserved it after saving Konami and us from something worse than even HC or DP Also I like this series of retrospectives and great job overall btw, but is the PSP port really the best way to experience this game for review? Even if the port was good as someone who's only played the PS2 version on the PS2 itself it's really apparent why no one would find it a bit scary after watching this footage. It's almost like experiencing silent hill 2 through the HD collection with it just seeming like a worse time overall. Still not flawless but visually there's two instances of subtle body language from Travis I remember off the top of my head that's just completely smudged away by the PSP graphics TL;DR I found out I'm an Origins Apologist
Thank you for the insight. it is always great to hear from the devs postmortem. I have always been confused why Konami would give small teams with little previous output a big IP like Silent Hill AND give the team little time and budget. It's like Konami doesn't want the greatest output possible within reason.
The PSP version was the original version and the PS2 version was the port. I've played the PS2 version and aside from it looking a bit nicer it's not that different and it still has the same problems: feeling like a fanfiction of the SH1 characters, cluttered and messy inventory due to the way weapons work, removing the scare factor by letting the player toggle the Otherworld on and off and just being overall a fairly boring experience at least to me. I don't really know why it felt it was needed to tell yet another Alessa story when that chapter is already told and closed

Of all the things that could be related in some sort of way, i never ,in a million years, would have expected to hear about Scrubs on a Silent Hill retrospective.
I think Origins works best for people that are new to Silent Hill, imo. Why? This was my first SH, despite its problems i remember that even when it was a voluntary choice, i was scared of having to go into the mirror world because the atmosphere was pretty scary with all its harsh colors and the monsters. While the story isn't amazing, i honestly think they should have picked between making the story all about Travis or all about the cult, it brought intrigue from within me and made me want to play the games to know what happened before (or in this case, after the events of this game).
Origins is one of my favorites. May that be from the abundance of times I've played it because of convenience or the general themes. To me it's like a comfort junk food type thing. Yeah it's not the best, but it's quick and hits the spot if you're down for a creepy mood. Headphones highly recommended
What a fantastic video series. I really appreciate not only the top notch quality, but the fact you actually played this game. And I appreciate you going through the trouble of playing these older games via emulation or different system just to get the games working well enough. And you even show every puzzle, mechanic, and story bit you talk about, which is amazing. If I were Konami, I would definitely hire you as a consultant for future SH games. I only played the first four SH games. So it was a real please to watch your complete and detailed videos about the other games I missed. The algorithm gods were good to me to randomly suggest one of your amazing videos and I'm lucky I clicked on it. :) Now I'll go watch the previous SH games that I did play to take a nice nostalgia ride down memory lane since the SH IP is special to me. I wish I can find a detailed analysis like yours about the SH movies as well since I like everything Silent Hill. :)
This game is my favorite Silent Hill after the 1 -3. I understand people have issues with it. I was so excited when it was ported to PS2 because I didn't own a PSP at the time. I sure enjoyed the hell out of it even though it was a portable game.

Dude, thanks for those videos about SH series. I've always wanted to play them again sometime but never had time to play it. Your videos is like playing these games but much faster with each and every important detail. Great work!
This is the most competent Western developers got in Silent Hill even though I still don't hate the game my biggest problem was the story and the controls. No major bugs I can't remember on PSP and the puzzles were competent enough but not the best.

I just binged your other videos and I SO excited a new one is out! I love your approach to discussing these games. Despite being pretty familiar with them it's always awesome to hear a different perspective and always learn something new. I am very excited for the one on "Downpour"!
The first SH I played myself. I still like it. Personally I love the good ending, the music and ambience were really calming and with the sense of starting anew. Puzzles were ok. Not too complex but not crazy as SH3. Also once you unlock the fire axe, melee combat feels more like the old entries. 🐻
I've been hoping more people would make videos on the Silent Hill series. it's my favorite game series of all time along with Resident Evil, and there is no shortage of videos on those games at all.
Good work son! This ended up actually being a bit more positive than I was expecting, so that was a nice surprise. There was some heart put into the game so I give it credit for that, but immediately after it does stuff like somewhat screwing with the established story or having wonky game mechanics. It's not a good SH game by any means, but it's decent enough for a horror title. I wish it had gotten another year in the oven or so because most of its issues could have EASILY been worked out with a bit of additional time.
This was literally my 1st entrance to silent hill playing this game really made me dive deeper through the lore as how good the franchise really is Though I'm only referring /Silent Hill/ Silent Hill Origins /Silent hill 2 and Silent hill 3. Though many fans or other each on there own opinions, but I really did love how the game starts from beginning walking through the road until u reach Silent hill With the beautiful music included giving u the suspense with who started the fire why is it so empty and Silent when waking up from the facility questions notes literally just there without any explanations. I loved the gameplay and the environment it still isn't outdated for me I love everything about the game.
Yeah the very beginning of Origins was great. They nailed that in my opinion. Very fitting and reminiscent of James walking that long eerie path at the beginning of SH2
I've watched each of the silent hill videos and I can say I liked it very much. I hope you will cover every silent hill game. After finishing the Silent Hill series, I would suggest you cover the Fatal Frame series or Resident Evil. Thank you again. Keep going.
Always wanted to play this one! I honestly like Travis as a character, i know fans don't really care for this entry thinking it didn't add anything to the overall narrative of the first game but i enjoy the story for what it is lol, great video loving the silent hill content!!
It's a shame this for some reason bent the series into exclusively western development. It's not like Resident Evil doesn't have a few subpar non-Japanese developed entries that they were still able to recover from when they brought it back in-house.
I bought this day one (just like I had with the OG Silent Hill), and while it's not my favorite game in the series, it is my favorite to play. I have probably spent more time with this one than I have with the rest of the series combined.
Happy SonDay. And cause it's also Mother's Day, I just want you to know how proud mom and I are of you. You're doing great. But try to take it easy sometimes. You're working so hard.
46:36 The problem with this claim is that it conflicts with the fact that Silent hill was never a particulartly profitable franchise, the most sold Team Silent game was 1, so that's the reason why origins is connected to it.
Hi, Son! In your SH2 video, you talked about the emotional delivery of Mary's final letter. You were so right! But even though this isn't nearly as good of a game, the delivery of the line Travis' father speaks in the Cedar Grove flashback when he realizes his wife is lost to her hateful delusions... it hits me hard. You can feel Richard's grief and despair. Great job by that VA.
It still hurts my head that Lisa is in this game (she was 23 in SH1, and that happens 7 years after Origins) and how the town lacks people (other than the most important characters, like Dahlia, Kaufmann and Lisa), despite the true mass disappearance happening at the moment when Cheryl was brought back there in SH1. At least the IRS should be interested why people suddenly stopped sending money... (Or were the people in other dimension than Travis during SH:O and later returned? Or was the town somehow repopulated after SH:O? I don't know, but every option seems a bit silly.)
Also, I would argue Travis is one of the best SH characters. He had a fucked childhood, but the whole initial incident that got him involved with SH in the first place was him trying to do the morally right thing and save a child.
@@viraticwars I mean...yeah, but considering the games that came LATER I sort of give this game a pass. It's not an A, or even a B, but it's like....a C+.

There was something here, it would’ve been nice to explore the events leading up to the first game, just I think in a different direction than what they did. Also wasn’t that impressed with the monster design and watered down story. But ig that’s what happens when you have to fit it on the psp.
Your series has single handed made me feel significantly smarter on the subject of Silent Hill games. And I'm very excited to see more from you in the future. If you've got no other games to review once your Silent Hill series is done. I'd highly recommend checking out "Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom." It's an interesting action-puzzle game that I think needs more appreciation in the common knowledge. And would be a neat little game for you to add to your "Obscure Game Review" Repetoire.

Playing at 2am alone in my pitch black room... oh boy I was too scared to go to the bathroom 😆This game messed with my head! I enjoyed it a lot so I finished it multiple times, unlocking all the bonus weapons and costumes. Some of the bonus weapons were so OP, it was so fun! Personally I never really minded the weapons breaking, it always felt nice when you picked up a strong and durable melee weapon like a big wrench and being able to use other silly items as weapons was funny. Lovely game, would love to see what a modernized version could do
I have a better appreciation for this game than most because first this was my first Silent Hill game, second I was a huge fan on the first (and only the first) movie and third I was in a position where I couldn't afford consoles and having a PsP was a blessing (and a miracle tbh, R.I.P. PsP )
You don't have to go into the menu to equip new weapons, the d-oad acted as a quick menu that instantly swapped weapons without a break in the combat...

Honey, wake up! our favorite son just posted a new video!!
The first SH I played myself. I still like it. Personally I love the good ending, the music and ambience were really calming and with the sense of starting anew. Puzzles were ok. Not too complex but not crazy as SH3. Also once you unlock the fire axe, melee combat feels more like the old entries. 🐻
Today youtube keeps blessing me with silent hill retrospective vids. And this one was added only 2h ago. Gonna be great evening
This was literally my 1st entrance to silent hill playing this game really made me dive deeper through the lore as how good the franchise really is
Though I'm only referring /Silent Hill/ Silent Hill Origins /Silent hill 2 and Silent hill 3. Though many fans or other each on there own opinions, but I really did love how the game starts from beginning walking through the road until u reach Silent hill With the beautiful music included giving u the suspense with who started the fire why is it so empty and Silent when waking up from the facility questions notes literally just there without any explanations.
I loved the gameplay and the environment it still isn't outdated for me
I love everything about the game.
Your other dad and I are proud of you, son. You'll do great things
Nothing like a YFS video to make a Sunday that much better let's fucking go toobz
This rules man!
Thanks so much!
Please keep the Silent Hill series going! I really enjoy them Son!
Great job by that VA.
omg I binged all your silent hill videos the other day and was hoping for the next one your videos are awesome
Fantastic work as always Son! While the story was kind of generic, playing in portably on psp was so good. especially with that sound track
I played on PS2... At least while I could see. That port got so damn dark I couldn't see.
He was a more generic James Sunderland though, with forced amnesia. Not that the game is 'bad' but it's just the Great Value version of Silent Hill.
@@viraticwars I mean...yeah, but considering the games that came LATER I sort of give this game a pass. It's not an A, or even a B, but it's like....a C+.
@@viraticwarsJames sunderland was a socially awkward everyday guy. While Travis seems to be less of a coward and more manly however he repressed his horrible memories of his parents
@@WembeyNoodl Harry was my favorite ever man. Travis was a little more generic. His Brawling Trucker deminor would have been refreshing if he was a little more hard edge with a no-nonsense attitude.
@@viraticwars I mean the guy punches monsters with his bare hands
Dude I really love your content. Glad you did that Fable Retrospective that got you popping up in my "fable speedrunner algorithm"
Keep up the good work, son, yer doin your old dad real proud.
awesome work, son, your videos are a blueprint for a great retrospective!
Thanks son. I just finished all your other Silent Hill videos last night.
Absolutely love your silent hill retrospectives
Oh, door-punching simulator! (I unlocked extra costumes on the PS2 version and equipped one, and my roommate and I couldn't open doors without punching them, which made the third run both hilarious and extremely aggravating)
That's a hilarious glitch.
@@RedSpade37 You _say_ that, until you're the one living it lmao
@@Arcanist_Gaming Fair!
Hell yeah I was looking forward to seeing you do this one.
Genre-breaking hits like Lizzie McGuire 3 homecoming havoc
I love watching these videos it helps me understand the games more and it helps the resurgences of silent hill games. I appreciate this channel i found you yesterday and I've been binge watching all your episodes man. thanks for making these videos man. keep the work going!!
Your videos are fantastic. Silent Hill is very important to me in my gaming journey. Thank you for doing them justice!!
Always a joy to discover a new channel that has "Retrospective" videos of my favourite game series 😄
Thank you, I'm enjoying this series on my favorite games out there! You got a sub! I hope to see the modern titles too 🙏
Looks like you're winning son.
Hey son it’s me, your dad. I’m so proud of your effort and progress! Please remember to drink some water and get some rest ;) …I love you son
"The company didn't like how looked"
Well yeah it's a horror game it's supposed to feel uncomfortable to look at.
I played through silent Hill 1 through 3 back in the day and I had always been curious to play all the other ones. I am absolutely loving these videos so far breaking them all down. You really are my favorite son and as a father I couldn't be prouder
I'm glad to have randomly stumbled on your videos, son- I'll even watch the retrospectives whose games I've no interest in.
I'm so dang proud of what you're doing Son! You mentioned in one of your streams how some of the best retrospectives come from a personal place. And you're all up in that space! ❤️
So glad my brother got me this game for Christmas back in 07😂the younger me actually enjoyed playing this game🔥
Son you're doing great and I'm very proud of you. But don't forget to rest while you work.
this was my first Silent Hill, so I have a huge soft spot for it
Funny how she can dispell the fire once Travis is there and not whilst she's being burnt alive , great series dude loving your videos
When he gets to her, she says "let me die". She didn't want to survive the fire. It's possible that she only then clears the fire to protect possibly the first person to show her any kindness.
SHO was my first ever Silent Hill game and since I had no base, I absolutely LOVED this game! but I hated it at the same time because it was just too scary...
Lovely game, would love to see what a modernized version could do
Great content man! Keep it up Son. Continue making us Dads proud 💪🏽
This game had some of the scariest music when you enter the sanitarium or whatever the music is so intense it scares the hell outta me lol
2:14 Konami definitely chooses developers based on quality
*SPOOKTACULAR*
I was going to take a nap, but I'll finish that after viewing your latest achievement..
*Proud* of you Son.
💪👻💜
Really good job on all the videos so far MySon! Cant wait for the MGS series reviews!!!
this game was my first silent hill and i enjoyed it. i get why people dont like this game but i do
13:58 this startled me way more than it should have during my first playthrough
I have a better appreciation for this game than most because first this was my first Silent Hill game, second I was a huge fan on the first (and only the first) movie and third I was in a position where I couldn't afford consoles and having a PsP was a blessing (and a miracle tbh, R.I.P. PsP )
Have to solve a puzzle to get to the bathroom? That’s a nightmare all by itself
Really enjoying these Silent Hill retrospectives. You're getting better. Keep it up, son.
You don't have to go into the menu to equip new weapons, the d-oad acted as a quick menu that instantly swapped weapons without a break in the combat...
I like that we can use our fists in this game as opposed to the other SH games in the franchise.
I'm surprised Claudia didn't go after Travis. He was the one who stopped the ritual in the first place.
maybe because travis wasn't planned by the original team.. although i would like a remake of origins.. making travis finally canon
I’ve been wondering where this video was! Finished the entire run you’ve done so far, really good work, Son.
thank you for making content for silent hill fans, thank you.
Keep up the good work son. You deserve success and so much more.
Dhalia burning down her own house is so against her motivations and plans, it makes me wonder how much they actually understood the plot of 1
10:56 *cries in BotW and TotK 😅🤣 30 weapons that all do the same thing sounds about right
Epic! Another great vid. Waiting for you to cover one of my personal favs, although some don't like it, homecoming.
Man I think you are one of my favorite UA-camrs now I have watched the first 4 episodes on the series and I may not agree with everything you say you really making me wanna play these games again and actually hope that they bringing this back. I'm definitely watching Yakuza next literally 2 of my favorite series of all time!
I like origin, its my first introduction to the series.
And I love the series ever since.
Yo just in time for me to relax, thank you :3
i am amused by the on-the-nose german surnames for some silent hill characters such as: Schreiber (meaning writer) the writer, and Kaufmann (meaning merchant) the drug salesman
This was the last Silent Hill game I played, and I never did finish it, it's good to see how it all ended. I hated the weapon mechanics lol. Amazing video as always, thanks son lmao
One of the 1st Games I've bought for the PSP and I did love It a lot
Been waiting for this one 🔥
This game and Shattered memories are good games for me, even though they aren't the best in the franchise they are good enough and have a special place in my heart. Amazing video!
They are good for what they are, i enjoyed them
But i would take silent hill 1 and 2 in a beartbeat
I love Homecoming a lot and always have. I think it does a lot of things diffrently and makes itself standout. Downpour I do think is a good game too with another unique take but I personally love all 8 main games.
Been waiting for this son.
This is what I always imagined a sequel to the first game being, I thought it was great seeing the original characters returning
