I see the issues caused by 4 wheelers. I watch the guy on the property to my north drive all the way to his stand and every time my cell cams start going nuts. It was so apperent that I sold my wheeler and started walking the 3/4 of a mile to my stand and I'm seeing more and more mature deer than I ever did before
Man that’s awesome. Sometimes it sucks having to walk far but it’s so worth it when you can get in quiet.
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoorsits not even that it sucks, I've invested a lot of money in my own place so I can get chances at mature bucks. The work you put in Pays off. I've had the property logged designed it so I can have food plots and thickets, I've opened up alot of the canopy so the light can come in. I'm currently working on a travel corridor that connects all the food plots through a 6 ft wide meandering trail that picks up the majority of natural deer trails that cross my property, and keeps the deer on my place as long as possible. I've done everything I can to increase access on my borders and stay out of the center of my property when accessing stand locations. I've got 30 acres in the largest woods in my county and part of my property is dead center I the middle of those woods. The deer movement has went from sporadic at best to a constant presence.

Travel lanes to food plots and bait always worked for me.
Clearing branch’s and noisy brush before season big help.
Clearing help undergrowth grow better at same time.

I do ride my ATV on my property, however I keep my speed under 20MPH and don't rev my engine for no good reason. I am convinced that the deer can sense the speed your traveling at, because I see deer from my tractor and ATV all the time, they don't seem to see me as a threat because of how slow I am moving.

Thanks A lot. A lot of people do it and it destroys there property and they don’t even realize it. Some people do it and kill great deer. Just depends on deer, property and what they are used to.

I highly agree though on the ATV/UTV use during hunting season. We actually tested a theory out the other year on this. So we expected it would scare them off driving the trail into the property, so what we did was still drove into the property, but only to drop people off, and then drive back out like we drove in and left. Deer are smart and we believe they know when you are there with that noise coming from the ATV/UTV but they pay attention too when you leave. It actually worked, on three separate occasions as we drove in and left in the morning 30-60 minutes they would see deer show up looking around, we assume cause they figured they had all left. After realizing they do pay attention to sound more than you think, we stopped driving in altogether and now walk it even if it is 5-7 miles.
Haha them things were killing me. Luckily they are gone now. Yes that’s very true I do believe they can kind of relate to all that noise and figure it out. They are smart for sure.
Question....I'm new to hunting. I am on a friends property. It is pretty wooded. There are clearings, but a higher canopy. What food options should I consider?

I had millions of cicadas aerate my plots for me this year...very deep 1/2" holes over the whole plots..has to be a huge advantage for the soil. holes were all over a foot deep. This is a huge bonus from the cicadas that is often overlooked

I agree on the four wheeler. I am disabled and can't walk very far. There is a steep hill On my property that I have to go down to get to my favorite blind over looking my pond. I can't climb back up that hill so I think I'm gonna start parking the 4 wheeler at the bottom of the hill and walk the rest of the way. Good info and not to much yack yack or watching someone drive to the store.. LOL! Good video.

I'm with you on the ATVs.
My neighbor seems to think it doesn't affect anything but he moved here from an area of limited cover. Most of the cover/trees shrubs where he moved from grows along fence lines and creeks.
Here, it's mostly forest/ select cuts.. So the bucks don't live on our property during the growing season. They travel from miles away where there is open pasture. Only the resident does het used to the ATV. Or hormone enraged young buck.
Since this guy moved in next to me, I have seen a drastic decline in mature bucks on camera. From 5 or 6 in a season down to 1 or none..

First time watching your channel. Excellent advice no doubt. Just a few things I want to discuss. I’m in Texas. Deer feeders are legal here and 99% of the hunters use them. Protein feeders are heavily used here as well.
So, I’m going to lay out my hunting situation and hope you have a few solutions. I like most hunters here in Texas have a deer lease. Property owned by someone else. There land, there rules. My lease also has cows on it. As much as we love our beef, they can be a real pain. So, I have about 3 acres I can easily plant. But I cannot fence off the cows. Property owners rules. They have free reign. Besides oats, what would be good to plant that would hold up to cattle traffic. Also, water is an issue. Our summers can be extremely dry. Sorry for the long post. Many more questions but I’ll start here. Thanks in advance.

I agree with you in some way's about the 4wheeler. I my past of hunting deer yes a 4wheeler does spook the deer. Recently I started hunting a new area that the deer didn't care about people smell or 4wheeler noise. My first location was is a country area the deer are under pressure. The new place is very close to the city. I'm telling you it's like two style hunting. I wish someone would make a video about the different types of deer (city & country). This would clear up a lot of question to hunter.

I recently watched one of your videos and I would like to ask you what I should do? I have 3 acors of land and season bow season starting the 25. Great video. I’m taking you up on your offer to ask a question. I hunt a hilly area in WI & have had 4 orthopedic surgeries in the last 5 years. Currently binge watching hunting vids as I recover from a hip replacement. What would you recommend for someone w/ physical limitations to access their favorite stands up high? Their are a couple off road electric bikes at the farm but those won’t even get up the hills. I’ve been taking an ATV for the last few years & hide it before I crest the ridge. Missed a monster last year at 75 yards but the branch I hit sure didn’t survive 😬. I keep my clothes in a Scentlok tote box on the way up. Any other ideas please? Thanks.

So with that situation you have to do what you can. Riding the atv up and parking a couple hundred yards away would have to be ok.
I remember I hunted in Ohio with a outfitter about 15 years ago and they took us to our Stands in a electric side by side literally straight up a mountain and that thing was powerful. That would be a much better option. I’m sure nowadays they are even more powerful and quiet.

I have 2 stands about 1/4 mile from each other. One stand sits across the creek from another persons stand and about 600 yards behind her is another guys stand. Both of them drive in to their stands and the one furthest back just cut the muffler off of his SUV before season. I saw 2 deer opening day and that was it for 3 weeks. I decided on the 4th weekend to go sit on my other stand which is away from everyone in camp. I walk in. Last 2 weeks of season I was the only one seeing deer and not only seeing but having them hang out in front on my property. I agree. I think ATVs mess it up.
How do you recommend doing food plots in hog country? We haven’t been able to do food plots since the pigs tear it up and destroy it before it can grow and produce. We rely on a supplemental feeding program and even those protein feeders are fenced off because of the hogs. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
I’m not in hog country lol. But for the folks that are it’s tough. I know the guys in Florida had a major hog problem and they had food plots year round. I don’t have a ton experience with them but they got it done. Maybe reach out to the antler grow crew and talk to them.
We use our 4 wheeler during the months of February To August to complete chores. We take the 4 wheeler rather then walk. We have found out that we don't scare the deer off per say when we do chores if we use the 4 wheeler as to if we walked. However, we do not 4 wheeler or inhabit our farm during September To January. Unless the wind is right and we are hunting.
Yes during the off season is fine. There’s plenty of time to recover
I love cicadas. It means better turkey hunting in 2 years. You should see a huge difference in turkey numbers in spring 2023 . Lots of 2 year old gobbling action.
I like the food plot idea. My issue is the hogs. I would hate to plant a 2 acre food plot for hogs to demolition or fight with the deer.. Any advice on detouring hogs but bringing in deer.. Also I’m getting a lot of bucks on camera day and night with no does. How can I help the ratio..
That’s a rough one with the hogs. I don’t have a lot of experience with that issue big I know the guys from antler grow deal with that 24/7 on Florida. They did have food plots it took a lot of work but the best method is trapping. Only way to control them to cut back on the damage.
Having a buck issue isn’t a problem haha. But does doe where the food is they are pretty comfortable staying close to that. Obviously don’t shoot any does if you don’t have any and have quality food and cover they should be there

Take a 3 lb. Coffee can fill three quarters with corn add half a bottle of molases and 12 peppermint candies crushed up,mix well.dig shallow furrough 2 ft. By 10 inches .fill with corn and cover with soil. If no deer show up after 15 minutes then their are no deer around!!

Plant Persimmon, Chestnut and White Swamp Oak trees.
Ok and wait 5 years for fruit and nuts and 15-20 for oaks.
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Swamp White Oaks are Missouri Forestry Professor Coggeshall favorite. They begin bearing acorns in six or seven years, just like Persimmon and Chestnut trees. Unlike other oaks, Swamp White Oaks bear substantial and consistently from year to year, rather than only every two or three years. Wild Animals can depend upon it as a food source.
Whitetail deer and turkey prefer Chestnuts by a wide margin over even Swamp White Oak acorns which are deer and turkey's favorite acorn due to low tannin levels.
Persimmons are second only to Dates for the most amount of sugar, and ripen and fall during hunting season. Deer resist the temptation to eat persimmons as well as children do milk and chocolate chip cookies.
Install a Screech Owl nest box in your woods to reduce tick hosts. Do a Proscribed Burn in the Spring every five years to kill ticks and pit-vipers. This will also release phosphorus and other minerals and will stimulate vegetation growth.
I can’t say I agree on the atvs etc, I shot my first buck on 10 acres that my uncle run his four wheeler and dogs threw and all around everyday, missing etc. he even had trail pictures of his old dog eating corn with the deer 😂. Blew my mind when I first saw it. But this new place I’m hunting, is rough. They are here but hard to get them out and we don’t run atvs or anything threw. Just grown up, swampy land

I think most outfitters use atv or utv to take clients in and out of woods. Maybe they aren’t getting any big ones.?

I think most outfitters are in fantasy land states that have a high number of quality bucks and each stand location has bait piles. Nothing is absolute. In high pressure areas with lots of hunters atv use just isn’t ideal especially on small properties!
I had a electric feeder on my property last year I'd see a deer here or there mainly the only thing showing up was raccoons once I removed it the raccoons went away and more deer started showing up natural vs unnatural.
That’s right. That’s usually what happens. Remove the feeders and deer hunting improves. 👌

Ugh I have this problem now. I have 60 acres on a mountain and the neighbor has a right away across part of my land to get to the back half of his 150 acres. He is a drunk and a moron. He drives through with his buddies leaving beer cans screaming ,mudding etc. It has ruined my hunting..
One thing I can’t stand is a drunk especially one that trash’s stuff hope it gets better

If you run 4-wheelers and snowmobiles continuous, as well as pee in the area that you hunt, the deer don't find it odd. I took three deer one day using a snowmobile, peed everywhere, and watched them before harvesting from 100 yards. Two other trips I used a 4-wheeler and brought a big doe and a 8-pointer while I had my 4-wheeler next to my blind. If you get them used to it, they disregard it. Just look at Upstate NY videos of snowmobilers feeding deer from their hands.
Key word deer. Not big mature bucks. Anyone can do anything they want and kill “deer”
But killing a mature animal takes a different level

One of the biggest, and by far most mature buck I ever got a bead on was when I first got into my tree stand and was making a whole bunch of noise hanging gear and bow. He had to 12+ points at minimum. However, I do prefer 2 year deer as they are not as tough as the old bucks/does. The quicker the harvest, the better the flavor. The taste of adrenalin in venison is what turns a lot of people off to it. I don't know if you have a vide on on that, but I feel that would be a good one to do; precise location of a shot that would take a deer down instantly.
The effect of ATV usage depends on the size of the property, how trails are configured, and the relation of your stand location to your parking location. On large properties with trails maintained on the periphery, I've seen minimal impact from ATV's. On our large properties in Southern Ohio, deer will usually stand there and watch us drive down the trail on ATV's, but if they see or smell a human walking down the trail, they're long gone. I'll often drive in and park within a few hundred yards of my stand and I see and kill plenty of deer. Even if I blow a few deer out, I'm not hunting the deer that are there now, I'm hunting the ones that will be coming through sometime in the near future...and at the time I drove in on my ATV, those deer could've been a half mile away. So like most things deer related, it depends.
what do you consider a "large property"
I told my friends 25 years ago about the 4 wheelers blowing out the deer and turning bucks nocturnal, i can hear a 4 wheeler from my tree-stand 3/4 mile across a valley on a quite wind-still day and it does not have to be throttled up just putting along, most deer are smarter than hunters, most hunters are just plain lazy, i won't hunt with people the go with 4-whlrs.....
What about riding a little during the off season. Say from January till may? I have an 18 acre piece that is part of a 300 acre woods. I cant see it being to detrimental
I think it depends on the property and the deer. If they aren’t bedding on the property then it’s probably ok. If they are then I wouldn’t do it. If you don’t think it’s detrimental then have at it. Just my
Opinion and what I’ve seen
If you hypothetically have a producing Oak stand on a hill and a cornfield rising up from a creek bottom running through the middle with an adjacent soybean field coming to mature you can drive a tank to that location and you WILL see deer after everything quiets down. That said. All things are relative to the conditions on THAT particular day. You do not want to be where you know the deer most likely are as you enter your area to hunt. You want to get to the place where they are eventually GOING to be. Common sense. Obviously, no substitute to the advantage of sneaking in undetected (liken it to slooooow stalk hunting/quiet) in sound and scent. Many times, as I am setting up my climber I start going up and get about halfway up and see deer 50 yds away grazing popping their heads up occasionally as I try to move up the tree slowly and quietly. First thing comes to mind: what the hell are they doing here so early? These animals are adaptable and will adapt to unnatural sounds driven by their stomach. I drive a 4 wheeler in pull in cover it with branches and walk the final 1/4 mile to my stand taking wind direction into account. The marathon walks up high calling and chasing turkeys up over hill and dale are long gone. Now hunting on fairly flat farmland with fencerows and small wood stands walking the 1.5--2 miles this will be good for you all the way around. Hunt mountain territory with steep inclines and declines and creek trenches walking 3-4 miles or more and that 4 wheeler is a Godsend. Remember when, not if, ;-) you take down that 150 class buck you have to get him out. That drag would kill Hercules and all the Argonauts.

Well I can assure you that at my farm my ATV’s never have affected my deer herd!! Could be because they hear it on a weekly basis going to and from the feeders?... Kinda like cows in the herd coming to the trucks in the pasture!. It’s all in how much they get used to I’d say!!!! I’ve literally filled up my feeders and not even 5 minutes later they’d be eating from the feeder! I literally think it calls them at my farm!!!😂☝️
Lol haha they can get used to it for sure. I’m mainly referring to big mature bucks being chased off the land and people only using there atv when hunting season starts to go to there stand.

If you do it everyday and they don’t associate it with danger then it’s sometimes ok. I’ve noticed it also depends on the area you are in.

I have Ben sitting and watching deer on my feeder. They all suddenly looked up and moved away. Next thing I know here comes a guy on a 4wheeler. So it can def spook them.

I drive my 4x4s all over my property. I see deer, and they see me. My deer stand there and watch me drive past. My deer hear me coming and slowly skulk away into thicker brush (cameras confirm) but not for long....they come right back. My deer hear and see me working food plots and farm activity all year long. *4x4s DO NOT blow out forests......Change does.*
SUGGESTION:
~IF everyone around you is riding 4x4s to go hunt the lands around you for miles around....then be the quiet place. Walk in.
~IF you and everyone are riding 4x4s all over the lands for miles around all year 'round, then DO NOT STOP using your 4x4 to go hunt your land......because ironically your 4x4 inactivity will spook them. Ride in.
yeah, i'm on your side, using 4 wheelers won't spook them that much, my group uses them every year, they are used to the sound perhaps ?, but this area also has heavy equipment all the time, soo..they really do not care. i will say though..its still best to walk in. my disabilities render me from walking far ( bad leg ). i ride my 4 wheeler right to the steps on my stand, leave it there. every year i've brought meat back. sooner or later i will get that BIG BUCK !..LOL.
