Crows are super intelligent and have a mean streak. They literally pull pranks on each other and other species, can mimic sounds incredibly well, and have been found to use 'tools' in some studies.

the turkeys are smart, they use the crows for an early-warning system- they aren't afraid of them, just cautious. the crows will have lookouts high in the trees that alarm at the slightest thing. Crows are extra cautious because they stand out in their surroundings.

Crows and Ravens are "the Borg". They work together. If you listen you can hear them constantly signaling to each other. I used to study corvids and follow their movements. You can "talk" to them by echoing their sounds back at them. They have extensive networks and you have to listen really carefully to hear the outliers in their flock. One of the scouts finds some tasty food and within minutes the tribe moves in for their collective share. Yeah, corvids are "socialists".. although not with any other species. In fact they slaughter songbirds which is what I have against them. A big flock of crows means a diminishing number of songbirds. Sad that. Nature you harsh!

Crows and blue jays here will make a lot of racket at most times but with a little experience in listening to them you'll know when a hawk is nearby. Their whole tone changes and they become more insistent.

@1Bigredox, I agree about crows being super smart. I feed wild birds every morning, including a special dish just for the crows. There are 3 crows that wait in the trees for me to put food out. I've seen them stack up pieces of bread and fly off. One of them grabs the yolk of a boiled egg first and flys away. They leave the boiled egg whites to rot. I don't know why they won't eat them. Then they take lg pieces shelled walnuts and pecans. Next is big cubes of cheddar cheese. They may eat a little bird seed, but usually don't bother. If the bread pieces are too stale, they dunk it in the fresh water bowl. I saw them dive bomb 3 squirrels that chased the small birds away from the seed. They hung around while the little birds got to eat, like they were guarding them.

Reminds me of an old apartment I lived in for awhile, it had a sun porch as it’s front room, and it was the old style side to side glass slats that made up the window, ceiling to floor, and had a chalk that would open them, thus allowing air in. Well we were on the second story, and the one side of the room overlooked the roof of the other side of the building, it was a split level building (1 story on half, and 2 story on the other half.)
My gf at thetime, who is now my wife has always loved feeding the birds, and various wildlife, and would put out birdseed on the roof. One day she put almost a cool whip container of shell less sunflower seeds on the roof, and as we sat there having a morning coffee, we watched a pair of chipmunks busting their humps, to pick up and haul off every single seed, despite the scoop that was put out likely weighed 10+ times the combined weight of both of them.
It took them over an hour, but they cleared off virtually every single one of those seeds, other than a few that had been grabbed by chickadees and nuthatches that frequented my wife’s various feeders.
The Chickadees were so used to use that they would literally land on a feeder I was standing at and filling, and start eating the seeds as I was adding them to the feeder, even had them land in the containers I was using as a scoop before, as I was trying to fill a feeder.

I also miss the smell of burning leaves, though occasionally I smell burning wood as folks here try to avoid using their home heating units.

I have a big backyard on the edge of town. And we always hang three bird feeders from the low branches of a knurled old apple tree. Two are full of sunflower seeds.
The Deer come every day at dusk. Raise up their heads and keep bumping the feeders untill most of the sunflower seeds are in a pile on the ground, then leisurely eat up all those seeds!
When I used a step ladder to get the feeders higher, the deer 🦌 can be seen rearing up on their hind legs, pawing at the feeders until they are nearly empty, then eat up all the spilled sunflower seeds!!!!!
We usually can't keep from laughing out loud, and that initially "Spooked" the deer, but not for long!

The babies were, of course, adorable, but the really interesting part was how the adults all seemed to cooperate in taking care of them, keeping them from straying, and watching for danger. No doubt in my mind those deer were cautious due to your human scent lingering in the area. They smell both the corn, and you, hence their conflict; they're not suspicious of the corn per se. A field full of standing corn isn't really natural, either, but they don't hesitate to charge in and starting chowing.

@@jason4547 I respect your attempt at humor, but my comment wasn't aimed one such as you, whom I can only assume is a wildlife biologist or something of that ilk. If you watch and listen to the video, at the 2:30 mark, the narrator intimates that he thinks the deer figure "this is too good to be true", based on their trepidation when approaching the corn pile. He offers no further explanation. Thus, I endeavored to share some thoughts on why those deer would be so apprehensive. Again, I did so for those folks who enjoy these videos but know little or nothing about deer and deer behavior, and might incorrectly conclude that they have a deep understanding of what's going on with that corn pile. Nope, they're just picking up the human scent, which most wild animals interpret as a bad thing, and for good reason. We are apex predators, and deer are a preferred prey species. But you knew that.

The animals were used to it so they came easily, zebras, kudus, warthogs etc. We also put out fruits, wild bird seeds and salt blocks for the buck. I had a little waterhole installed to make it easier for them. We would sit on the second floor looking down on the animals feeding. It was magical, the zebras sometimes do get feisty, kicking and biting any competition but in general they all would eat together. We also made mud pools for the warthogs. I miss being there.

The deer went for the corn because they smelled the raccoon in the peanuts. They normally would have gone for the salt in the peanuts first. Also, deer and turkeys are often found together. It's a symbiotic relationship. Deer have figured out that turkeys have better vision, or maybe turkeys have figured out that deer have a better sense of smell. Or maybe not, but whenever I see turkeys in the woods, the deer are never far away. I have actually seen yearling deer "playing tag" with turkeys, chasing them around just for the fun of it while the doe was loafing around nearby.

At first they feasted where the peanuts lay then they started to grab one, two if they can, and fly to the roofs of nearby homes. When on the ground, crows would steal peanuts from another crow despite there being plenty of peanuts on the ground. Birds aren't so nice to each other. I don’t know what your climate is like but where I live, the deer’s digestive system changes during cold weather and they can literally die a very painful death from eating corn. @@loveydovey1105 The OP isn't exactly wrong either, it's a debated issue. "why some folks rightfully say it might be harmful to feed deer corn in some circumstances. Deer ingest food items, but microorganisms in their gut actually breakdown the food items and/or convert it into forms that can be absorbed from the digestive tract into the body. There are many different species of these microorganisms in a deer’s gut. Some breakdown certain types of nutrients better than others. The microorganisms get their food from the ingested items they help deer process. So, if deer haven’t had much to eat (like can occur during late winter) the microorganisms haven’t had much to eat either. In fact, many of the microorganism populations can decrease significantly.
This is the source of the potential problem, adding corn or any type of food deer haven’t been consuming. The populations of microorganisms in the deer’s gut necessary for digesting any food item can be too low. So low that the ingested food can’t be digested and absorbed by the deer. When this occurs, the deer can die from starvation with a full stomach." - growingdeertv

Anyone who contemplates feeding deer should read up on the deer’s digestive system, it’s rather fascinating. I’m a hunter and used a corn-based feed to attract deer to my trail cameras. I stopped using corn due to concerns about possibly causing harm to the deer. If you bait with corn all year, it’s not usually a problem but it can be if you only bait for a short period of time (hunting season) It can take up to 2 weeks for the micro organisms in the deer’s rumen to adapt to new foods. The deer rely on these micro organisms to break down the food into energy which the deer relies on to survive. In the future, I plan on using natural browse e.g. cedar bows to attract deer.
