Please make another smack down!! 😍 Definitely geese vs turkey as well as goats vs sheep as well as rabbits vs chicken as well as cows vs goats/sheep(?) !!! I would love to watch all of these 😆
Awesome video! Another pro for ducks IS that they do dirty their water. I rotate my birds through my orchard and at the end of the day I collect all that dirty duck and goose water and use it to water my fruit trees, my sunflowers, and even my vegetable garden (just not leafy greens) and I have to say that all of those plants respectively did amazing this year! Especially those sunflowers which got the occasional duck water and rainwater whenever it rained and they are easily 10ft tall with huge heads! So that dirty duck water filled with nutrients is a liquid fertilizer that your ducks made for you to use…how cool is that?!
LOVE this!!!🤪❤️ Soooo funny!! Loved you all!! On our farm we have both chickens and ducks…OH and bunnies as well as beef cows, milk cows, sheep, goats, mini donkeys, mini horses, llama, cats, and puppies! 🥰We love them ALL!! Thank you ALL for being advocates for farming, agriculture, and homesteading! Blessings to you from your fellow UA-cam friends from Kansas!
This was a GREAT episode!!! I am a huge Morgan fan:-) I left CT a few months ago and two weeks ago I finished a Suscovich tractor. I am now proud mom to 6 chickens and have no clue what I am doing... 😄
You said this has been historic, I would say hysteric-al!! The funniest but educational, video I've ever seen. Will definitely go with chicken if we go that direction. Thank you!
Im in south central Iowa and starting my homestead. I grew up on a farm part of my life . I have chickens and ducks , love them both lol . Im hoping to find some like minded people near me to build community with .
Have had chickens for 20 years steady but wanted ducks again after none fir about 40 years ...have much closer neighbors to consider sssooo after watching recent vlog n finding out that one kind of duck that I've always liked was actually quackless but I didn't know that .. .so now I've got 25chicKens n 3 Muscovy's 1-drake & 2 hens !!! Presently purchased as adults !!!
36 mins in & I literally said not everyone sells duck eggs but SO MANY sell chicken eggs.. right after my thought he said about duck eggs being more of a niche market many locations compared to chicken eggs... absolutely!
I have both. We have a pond and the ducks keep it nice. They are layers so I get plenty of eggs. Then I have my layer hens. I get so many eggs it isn’t even funny 😂
Very well done! I like it. PLEASE BRING UP LOCATION WHEN CONSIDERING POULTRY CHOICE. I capitalized for attention because we found in the far northern midwest the freezing temperatures greatly effect what is easier to raise. Because of the freezing water, ducks are something we phased out although we enjoyed the animal. But not only was it hard to water them, but they created major ice issues wherever they are housed. But a tip for keeping it much cleaner brooding ducklings is to use straw on top instead of pine shavings. Trust me, wave goodbye to soggy, stinky woodchips and hello to fresh clean straw that extends how often you need to clean the brooder.
I got guineas. And so far they are diligently doing their part to control fly larva and ticks. The trick is to train them to the hen house for at least 8 weeks and to make sure once they are free you encourage them going into the henhouse every day. If you don’t the owls will get them all slowly but surely.
My mother had both chickens and ducks. She gave away extra eggs at the food pantry where she worked on the clothing side. No one wanted the duck eggs. She actually was told by one person that the yolks were TOO orange. So, if you plan on selling eggs, before going whole hog with ducks, test your market out.
I use them for baking so I was always esstatic when someone sold duck eggs. I also use the yolks to make moo cakes for my Chinese friends where it’s cheaper if they buy from me than from overseas
I love your idea on how you bring farmers together - having fun and providing valuable information at the same time! Maybe a Belgium farmer with whom i just did an interview could join some day))
This was so fun and informative!!! I think chickens win-at least for me. But we have successfully raised chickens for over 25 years (very small scale for family use only) with no major problems, besides wild dogs breaking into our yard a few times. Very easy to raise, and nothing tastes like farm fresh eggs!
I just ordered my first ducks, I have Beilefelders and Americaunas already. I watched "Fit Farmer" smoke duck and just about drooled myself. I think you should have some of both. I think the point that common downsides are management issues and can be overcome. I am learning business things though! Love this show.
This was great! I've been doing research into which bird I should get and this video came in clutch. is there a sheep vs goat episode? If not, I would love to see that
I vote chickens - there's a reason most people have chickens. I can't get enough chickens. I started with 3 chickens, now 28. All friends and pets - you can make pets of chickens. Nobody mentioned that they are affectionate. I know, ya'll look at chickens as food, but they have personality and can be friends. And they make friends with each other - I try to keep the ones who are friends together. Of course, I'm not trying to make money off chickens, but I do get paid for eggs sometimes. Aust, I just get so tickled every time I see my painting of Ladybug on your wall. I've sold thousands of paintings and prints, and I often see them on people's walls, but somehow it just makes me smile every time I see that painting.
I can say in my 71 yrs I have not eaten a duck egg or duck. However in the 70's and 80's I was on the hunt for duck eggs to decorate. Chickens, ducks, geese, and a few quail eggs are in my curio cabinet. I enjoyed the podcast. In SC, childhood memory was my grandmama would walk out the back steps grab a chicken from her flock for dinner. Fresh eggs and chickens are the best. They didn't have ducks.
Try a duck egg sometime. Well worth the eating! I prefer them to chicken eggs (although I only raise chickens as I don't want to deal with the water issues for ducks).
I grew up with both chickens and ducks and prefer my ducks to have conversations with and my chickens for friendliness. I currently have 4 1 month old duckies. They are plucky for sure. Also grew up with geese, it’s why I am not afraid of Canada Gesse, since I got beaten up a lot by a goose I a bad mood who was offended by me just breathing in their direction 🤣 I miss Olaf the Toulouse, he used to sit in my lap and if my friends tried to pet him he’d give them the side eye and hiss. He was the nicest goose we had since he thought he was a dog
This was so entertaining! And actually a good comparison analysis! Keep up the good work guys!😂We have chickens (somehow 15 has turned in to 68🤷🏼♀️🐔🐣🐓), but I’m still trying to convince my husband that ducks are a good idea too.😅
I opted for chickens as they make less mess, was easier for me to aquire only females and i appreciate their scratching as it turns the soil. I'd also want to try duck eggs before i raise any and no one around here sells duck eggs. I won't take "trust me it's better" as that's what i was told about goat milk and i cannot stand goat milk. Last time i had a goat milk product i nearly gagged and i immediately had to go get something to get the foul taste out of my mouth. So, i am definitely going to try before i raise any ducks
Well, this was something new! I stumbled across this novel communication (Hi Morgan! You really do get around.) looking at housing solutions for Ducks on UA-cam. Why stay located just in Conneticut or the USA. There's Simeon who started off in Sweden and now has moved to California (I think); there is Australia and think of all the Portugese and a couple of Spanish Homesteaders plus Canadan. I like the one, Sheep vs Goats. Bye, you guys. It was fun and made heaps more sense for me having followed Morgan for years on his journey. I'll be broadening my aspects due to this "Zufall".
Also good to note ducks are avid slug destroyers. As a big gardener I love them for that and my two male ducks earn their keep solely through this service. Gobble up the dastardly things. I guess that’s regional tho haha. I live in the PNW so slugs are garden enemy number 1.
Another from the maritime Pac NW and ducks for the win here. Ducks eating the slugs without destroying the garden, and not minding the semi perpetual wet edge out the chicken for me. Still run both as chickens are great for making compost, but also run turkeys, geese, quail, rabbits, with pigs, sheep, goats, and eventually cows in the pipeline.
How do you get the ducks to lay eggs in the spot you want. Like chickens can be in a coup at night then lay in there in the am and you can let them out by day. How do you do ducks for laying eggs?
How ? It’s been proven by actual professionals in the field not these clowns that ducks are not great for the farm and chickens are better in almost every way.
We have a small farm in Georgia .we have chickens, ducks and guineas. I love duck eggs everyone else eat chicken eggs and no one eats the guinea eggs when we find a guinea egg we check for fresh and feed them to the dog/cats on all of the overage goes to animals..now thinking about putting them up for sale now..before feeding the animals..might make a little cash..
Love this vid. Entertaining and informative. I have chickens and am aiming for some ducks too, so useful. But... geese? Can just range them, right? No feeding required if I have acres of fields?
There's no difference between store bought eggs and backyard chicken eggs aside from ethics and freshness. Some claim it to be extra nutritional, which might be true depending on the eggs you get.
Funnest show ever! Those flu people don't seem to go for ducks, and they could seem wild; we might have a better chance keeping them in a worst case scenario. Thanks, Guys! It was a tie. Yes, sheep and goats "and" geese vs turkey would be great!
i had 4 chicken in the past. the biggest problem with the chicken is the hot summer temperature. they can die of heat stroke. right now i have three female (hen) and one male (drake). compare the work and health issue for chicken and duck, i would say duck is much easier to care for all year round. chicken has to have heat lamp during winter where as duck adapts to all year round temperature as long as you have a tub of water in the grassy area to soak up splashing water. i have more fun watching ducks dunking their head/body into water. chicken and duck will have waste to deal with. great for compose mix and garden.
Unless you're getting subzero temps you don't need a heat lamp for chickens, you just need to make sure their coop is dry, well ventilated and not too drafty. I will conceed they don't like the heat though
I grew up on my dad's farm in Arizona and I would say for beginner's chickens are best because with chickens it's easier to reproduce them because ducks need some sort of body of water to lay fertile eggs for the next generation, and chickens don't have that requirement to reproduce the next generation of chickens.
I'd like to see dairy sheep. Yeah, sheep for milking. I don't have any, but I have sheep for wool and meat. Way easier to contain than the dairy goats I used to have!!
if you live where chickens are illegal go with the Muscovy duck. When the code enforcement people come just let them know the ducks are not yours. Throwing a rotten duck egg in the code car is probably a bad idea though.
Late to the show. Morgan skipped 2 big points for ducks. 1 You can breed your own meat ducks unlike Cornish cross where you have to buy chicks. 2. Ducks produce the highly prized Duck Fat.

Sheep vs Cow (both can be grown on pasture only, no feed purchased). I'd love to see the Shepherdess VS Greg Judy!

I have to disagree with Morgan, ducks would have a cowboy accent. They walk like they have large chaps on
Awesome video! Another pro for ducks IS that they do dirty their water. Ducks, chickens, Guinea hens and goats. Then there’s “not my cows” that belong to my neighbor. Oh and 4 dogs. It’s fun around here
This was such a excellent video! I mean come on can we appreciate this editing!!! This was so great!
The mess they make, noise, space requirement for ducks makes chickens a better choice for me. I also prefer the taste of chicken eggs. Great show!
This was a GREAT episode!!! I am a huge Morgan fan:-) I left CT a few months ago and two weeks ago I finished a Suscovich tractor. I am now proud mom to 6 chickens and have no clue what I am doing... 😄
I definitely would love to see goats vs sheep or if anyone raises livestock for fiber maybe sheep vs alpaca?
Oh a fiber throw down would be awesome!
Let’s get ready to FIBER !!!!
Us spinners, weavers, felters, knitters, and crocheters approve this suggestion!
This was the video I didn't know I needed! Loved every minute!

Ducks are hardier. Living in the PNW I can say the ducks like the weather here much more than the chickens do.
Yes!
Also PNW, ducks and geese. Chickens hate the constant rain lol
I actually did stand an egg on end once! I was at work and had the whole office witness it, also got pictures.

I got guineas. And so far they are diligently doing their part to control fly larva and ticks. Our chix had bumblefoot early in the 2nd year and it was a huge problem. Great convo!
This was delightful! Thank you for a wonderful evening!
I use the water from my ducks kiddy pools to water my garden . Instant fertilizer.
This was a lot of fun and informative, thanks!
Some years ago, Slow Foods compared the end results between using duck and chicken eggs in recipes. We need to see this type of stuff, too.
This was so fun and informative!!! I think chickens win-at least for me. I am more interested in ducks actually but the chicken poem was just a masterpiece! 👏🏼😁
Yeah, and I don’t need a lot of dukes.
I just ordered my first ducks, I have Beilefelders and Americaunas already. I watched "Fit Farmer" smoke duck and just about drooled myself. I think you should have some of both. I think the point that common downsides are management issues and can be overcome. I am learning business things though! Love this show.
Why ? They provide almost nothing
I love duck eggs, so creamy and rich im shocked he has trouble moving them. But chickens are easier and cleaner in my situation.
This was great! I've been doing research into which bird I should get and this video came in clutch. is there a sheep vs goat episode? If not, I would love to see that

Awesome comparison video. What a great debate Aust. Was this a live stream video?

We were able to sell a dozen buff orpington hatching/eating eggs for $11 and we sold turkey eggs at $5 an egg.
So glad y’all connected w GOLDSHAW!!! Yaaaaaay
This was a super cool debate and fun to watch. Go ducks !!! But geese rule.

Oh my gosh, how is this even a question!? 🐓
I want to hear more about Morgan's Geese
FYI, you can only stand an egg on its end for a couple of hours each year.
What a fabulous community!
How do you get the ducks to lay eggs in the spot you want. Like chickens can be in a coup at night then lay in there in the am and you can let them out by day. How do you do ducks for laying eggs?
Hilarious! This has to be the BEST video yet.

Wow this was a very very good and educational video bravo--
Morgan was robbed the win. Just saying. 🐥 Ducks all day ❤️

My two fave homesteaders!!!!!!
Love this vid. Entertaining and informative. I have chickens and am aiming for some ducks too, so useful. But... geese? Can just range them, right? No feeding required if I have acres of fields?
Did you add soap to your water when plucking the ducks? It penetrates the waterproof oil letting the hot water soak the bird.
I apreciate your work, and I would like to see the chickens vs geese battle! Bc. of grasing and wildlife protection, I'd like to know more.
Could you guys make a shortened version of this video?
Can you feed the spent mash from brewing to the chickens?
Sheep vs goats next!!!!
This was amazing, can't thank you enough.
But what in the heck is on Morgans shirt 🤣
SLOTH from The Goonies..."Hey you guys!"

What about Coturnix quail, specifically the Texas A&M variety? I'm interested in their output to footprint.
