Nick Oliveri sits down with Soundsphere's Dom Smith to talk about his time in Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss.

Cheers for everyone's support on this!
Lmfao @ asking him about qotsa & freaking mondo generators (some side project named after the legendary BFTRS closing track) instead of KYUSS 😳🤦🏻♂️😂😂🤣🤣
@@theninthheart4736 If I ever get the chance again, I'll be sure to ask, mate.
Him, Homme, Grohl, and Lanegan was probably the most talented lineup of the 21st century IMO
can’t undersell Troy’s contribution to the whole thing
Could not agree more.🤘🏻
@@JoeyVatavuk Troy has always been the coolest guy in the band.
100% - too many guys in the band now
@@house9850 least favourite line up. It’s like Josh got bored and just left it as is.
I met Nick at SXSW 2013. I was watching Eagles of Death metal and he just walked in the door and stood beside me. Being a huge fan of his, I struck up a conversation with him and he couldn’t have been a nicer dude. Nothing but respect for him and the amazing music he’s created.
He's a down to earth dude who never let the success or the talent get to his head. The first time I met him he was still in QOTSA and he asked me for a ride to his motel room from the show and offered me gas money. He was staying at a Super 8 or something, not a five star hotel.
Nick Oliveri is one of my favourite bass players. Great interview ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!!
He’s pretty humble, sentimental and vulnerable in this short interview.
It seems like a very genuine statement when he says he cares.
I agree!
Love Nick, one of my fav bass lines of all time is the one he played on “In the Fade”. An image I’ll never forget is one I saw at a QOTSA concert in Houston. Nick went on stage in nothing but a pink speedo and his nuts were completely hanging out the side. The biggest, droopiest nuts I’ve ever seen on a man.
Man that made me laugh, thanks for that.
I remember seeing that!
Yes. When I think of nick the first thing I think of is " In the fade" sometimes I think. Where did he come up with that?
He was completely naked on stage at Reading Festival 2001. Again, an image that’s stayed with me!
@@arp_909He'd be good friends with flea lol
I would love to see Nick jump on stage and sing Millionaire with Queens.
Right🤘
ua-cam.com/video/LOuqVUYiIXY/v-deo.html
I saw that live in 2003.
It happened in 2014
I really miss his presence in QOTSA
Met Nick on the first Queens tour, he was so nice, shared stories about Kyuss on tour with WEEN .
Kyuss/Ween tour was amazing! One of the best rock shows I’ve ever seen. Caught them at a dive bar in Tempe Az.
Nic is an old buddy from the Lower Haight (S.F.) and can honestly say one of the coolest guy you'd ever meet. ZERO ego, true legend of R n Roll and warrior of the late night after party. Next to the late Lemmy, Rex (Nic) is like him in his dedication to music.... always working, not givin' a shit about critics. If you get a chance to party with him you'll find everything I said is true.
That’s a very humble interview that actually gives most of us would be guitar and bass players some hope in the knowledge that even a badass like him gets nervous about playing to his best abilities
Really interesting point, man. Thanks for watching!
I saw him live with Queens he was off the chain on stage. He would stand back about 3 feet from the mic 🎤 and scream, next to Lanegan. And it sounded really good. He played flawless Bass the whole show. He was jacked… up ⬆️ jjjjjackeddd
Glad you enjoyed this.
Yo, you're all forgetting that he played with The Dwarves. The fucking Dwarves. For a long time too. That is epic by itself.
Rex Everything
I was thinking the same
Josh knows that no matter what he does, the Queens will never be as great as they were with Nick,
I had the opportunity to talk with Nick for a quite awhile before their Stoner show in Grand Junction CO Sept 2022…what a genuine, down to earth and overall incredible soul… thanks for sharing your dark mark stories with me Nick. That video interview shall remain forever private just as I promised you. Long May You ROCK
Thanks for sharing this!
Met him a few days in my hometown for a show! Killer set and super nice guy!!
Thumbs up and loads of respect to the rare integrity of Nick not giving a f@kk about fame and money with queens and just playing punk rock with the greatest rnr band ever....THE DWARVES
Thanks for checking this out!
Songs for the deaf is right up there with nevermind in my opinion. Nick was a part of that. I don't know how big a part he was though, I'm just a fan with no knowledge. However I'd challenge you to name a more game changing rock album since.
That's a good point, House!
Cool interview. This was around the time I caught Stöner live last year. Nick was talking to a couple of youngsters and he was nice enough to give me an autograph mid-conversation. He seems to be in better shape these days. I hope Stöner play more shows.
Thanks for sharing!!
Still remember them Kyuss, as a garage band in Palm Desert, CA. I was in 3rd grade.
Nicks fuckin awesome. Even hearing his stuff in STONER though a bit simpler you can tell the dude just keeps evolving. The Jams are so "in the pocket" its making holes in it!
STÖNER are awesome
Amazing showman, raw spirited energy.
I saw him in Bournemouth around this time. A few months back now. The bloke took the time to talk to us after he finished his set, for ages as well. Dude is brilliant as far as I'm concerned. Humble af considering the bands hes been in. Stadium bands man. Thanks for the upload.
Glad you enjoyed meeting him!
Nick and Les Claypool. Both talented as hell! They put it down every performance. 👍💥💪🎶
Nick, Shavo from System, and Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne are my favourite bassists of all time. Great
This dude and Mani from The Stone Roses are my favourite bass players, not just musically they just seem like good regular people, no ego bullshit with these lads.
I was just listening to Fool’s Gold lol. Good picks.
Nice shout out with Mani 🤌
Unless you are a woman.
👍✌🇬🇧
Everybody thinks that main riff in fools gold is bass but its guitar
It n our era and time,We all have these same eyes.Theyve seen Alot.Nick is legendary and I'm proud of him.Buy his and all the Kyuss members stuff with and outside of Kyuss.Getcha Pull 🥃-CHEERS 🍻🤘🏿🖤
met him last month. He was super nice we talked about Songs for the deaf and he signed my Ticket. He spend the whole night at the bar next to the gig Location talking with fans.
I EFFING LOVE Mr. Nick Oliveri!!!!! Stay real, man!✌
John malkovich?
Speed kills. I knew Kyuss manager back in the day. Mid 90’s he got lost in it
Dude I love you Nick.
I'm always here for ya.
Avon
Forget all those other bands ...You are REX EVERYTHING IN THE DWARVES!!!!!
LOVE YA Brotha!
I enjoy Queens but LOVE Kyuss. Such a truly fantastic snd innovative band.
Yeah!!
He was always the crazy wild part of those bands, when he left Kyuss, savage tracks like Mondo Generator were gone, same thing happened with tracks like Tension Head in QOTSA... Fortunately he had EXCELLENT replacements, Scott Reeder was AMAZING and brought a groovier side to Kyuss
@@riggs100 Thanks for this perspective, mate.
Love nick in all these bands, but wjat I like the most is him in the dwarves.
Nick's a real 1 for sure.
I've done sound for Nick a couple of times when he was just doing an acoustic solo thing. I'd love to mix for him when he's playing with a full band.
Thanks for sharing!
I love this man!!!!
Met him at a club after he played with Mondo Generator, maybe 15 plus years ago. I remember how surprised I was by his mannerism, down to earth and chill to a fault and I was expecting to meet a madman of sorts ahahah.
Cool story, mate. Thanks for sharing.
Trust me he can be a madman , my mate from GBH meet him when he mert he just bent down an bit his ankle , when kyuss had split josh homme hadnt seen for 2 yrs he gound playing in gay bar bollock naked with the dwarfs , they played the same as tereivision in uk terrvision qerw massive at the time no2 single in charts no 9ne had really heard the quuens un uk at the time they were suppose shared a dressing room terrivision would nt let them in he booted the door an laid in to them arrested an hand cuff an took away he was arrested in festival brazil after going on stage naked in front of 200,000 people ( gus roses heaflined i think) it illegal to go naked on stage in brail, he apartment was raided by the police for supposedly firearms the one once sn the runour he kicked out of queens he was beating his girlfriend up , seems lovevly when he sober met him twice when he was with dwarves an stoner like every body they different when they in the booze or drugs i think had bad coke/crack oroblem for a bit
His time on the video No One Knows was epic
YO Nick,,,,,this is a good look on you bro! I like where your head is at, whether it is something you admit, or not, you used to wear your regret on everything I saw you do in public. I am glad you found a way to get through that! \m/
Throw a Swazi on homies forehead and it’s Charlie Mansons doppelgänger
hmmm weird enough you got a point here :)
So going off his reputation at the time it’s actually quite revealing to not only see that he’s very much still here but in good health🤯 him talking about the nerves from wanting to be at his absolute best every night is a humbling thing to hear nowadays and may explain why his behaviour in queens was seen as so erratic? I’m guessing here that like so many good artists he could well be bi polar, which has the effect of bringing out a manic side on the back of the nerves he feels from having to go out and perform. Josh Homme could never understand that his behaviour was likely caused by his nerves as much as the drugs
As it turns out, Josh Homme understands it VERY WELL… nobody’s perfect & people never stop evolving. Don’t Judge
@@KyOte13 well fair play for pointing that out as yeah having read it back I can see how it came across as judgemental. Something that I believe is worth having it pointed out
It's good that these comments are here about him being a nice guy because that's not the rep he had for a while.
Everybody deserves a second chance right?
I love Nick, always will
His vocals on you think I ain't worth a dollar are insane
Beautiful humble guy
QOTSA has been a solid 4/10 since Nick was ousted. He was the macho to Josh's femme side. When i got into qotsa it was Nick Mark and Josh on seemingly equal vocal duties. That line up was definitive. If the SFTD line up had stayed together just imagine what we would have gotten. Instead a few years later we've got piano ballads, Elton John and the boy from Scissor sisters on backing vocals and a band that now just feels like the Josh Homme+hired guns band. Ach well.
It's a Josh Homme solo project now. I can't see it any other way.
@@DamnDealDone The Desert sessions are actually the best QOTSA albums anyways. It's an embarrassment of riches but still, I'm pissed off we'll never get the carousel of Mark Nick and Josh sing together again.
I'm blessed to have seen the Joey STFD line up on that tour. It was 10/10
What's wrong with piano ballads, Elton John and the guy from the Scissor Sisters? Like Clockwork is arguably their best work since SFTD. And Oliveri is on that one.
Not really a fan of Homme's vocals, but Nick is a terrible singer.
@@hinjurock70 No way man. "Im gonna leave you" and "millionaire" are awesome vocals and any song i n QOTSA or Desert Sesh that had Nick on it. Great bass player and killer tone too
Saw him play with his new band Stöner 3 months ago. Loved it! 🤟🏻
Nick was the only member of Queens, besides Troy I guess, who really felt like an equal co-member to me, not just a hired gun type never meant to last. I progressively lost interest in their albums after he left. Not that that's entirely because of him, but it's a large part.
You would be wrong their current bassist is the best yet and their drummers are all good
@@Bigbrotherthunder I enjoy pretty much all the drummers Josh has employed and their different styles. I loved Alfredo, Gene had a lot of versatility and swing, and Joey was a master at the hard pounding, ass kicking stuff. Surprisingly I don't like a lot of the live stuff from the Grohl tours, despite him being amazing and his work on SFTD award worthy. I don't think they're BAD shows, just not favorites.
@@D-Fens_1632 those shows with dave i thought were their best. lanegan too was at his best then before he relapsed.
Good to see this one doing well.
Nick is the shit.
My favorite QOTSA lineup will always be Nick, Alfredo, and John McBain (from Monster Magnet). Wish that lineup stayed around a while longer.
How many shows did they do? 2?
That line-up was 97 when they had about 4 songs.
got to see nicj again , top bloke , rad both times
Great to hear!
King Nick
Nick rocking a Trash Talk hoodie. Fuck Yeah!
WHile I still love QOTSA they radically changed after Nick left. I do hold out hope he'll return in some capacity in the future.
Nick's got a little Charlie Manson in him.
never noticed it before but he kind of looks like a bald Charles Manson
He'd make a great 'bad guy' in a film
Awesome Trash Talk hoodie.
Agreed!
Genius man
Killer bassist.
He looks exactly the same
He hasn’t aged in 20 years…unlike Josh
You should see a closeup of Nick in 1080p, scary!
Lol was thinking very much the same thing in that going off his reputation you wouldn’t expect him to still be around let alone look ok
Nick leaving Queens was like Larry David leaving Seinfeld.
Pretty accurate
PRITTAYYYY PRITTAYYYYYYYY ACCURATE!!!
Bro, turn the music down in the interview, lmao. Please
classic.
QOTSA.
Top 10 bands of all time.
not to make light of a bad subject...but take a dive into why Josh wanted him to leave... maybe one of the most underrated bass players of all time, but man has his demons
nick is awesome oh btw nick if you see this by odd chance i love the trash talk hoodie \m/
People change. He's doing better now, I hear.
Dude is insane.
He beat up his girlfriend.
Yea there's a reason he got removed from qotsa. Good bass player bad everything else
Most junkies have. Beating up a spouse or family member seems to be part of the pathway to rock bottom. But if he's currently clean, (which typically involves making amends with those you've hurt)... then it would seem like a dick move to just comment "he beat up his girlfriend" as if that's the summation of his existence.
She deserved it !
🫢🫣
🫠not funny no! I am idiot , bad joke not funny at all
@Raoul Duke exactly this. He's done some absolutely abysmal shit that can't be forgotten, but every damn human should have the right to do everything they can to make reparations for any prior wrongdoings. I hope he's doing well nowadays and I hope he's worked on repairing any personal connections his past addictions may have damaged
nerves and nervous come oftenly in this very slight interview...
Yeah definitely, but hope you enjoyed it.
@@GimmeAHullYeah yeah sure
@@FARIdGHEHIOUECHE Good!!
Is this dude gacked?
"oftenly"??
Perhaps he shouldn’t have beaten women and he’d still have a career.
Rex Everything… Rock Legend.
The caliber and talent of the current QOTSA far exceeds any past lineup. Josh has a group of guys who are equally talented at their instrument. They don’t have the attitude of past member and therefore don’t feel as exiting but they’re pros and fantastic to watch.
They’re good players but not good writers like Nick and Mark
@@Spookyaki1 I disagree. Dean's project "Tropical Gothclub" is very good
he looks like Anton LaVey
Just realised how much he looks like Anton Lavey
Can AI allow me to hear "Keep Your Eyes Peeled" with Mark Lanegan singing?
Dwarves too
Queens of the stone age is water down after him and lanegan left...
There is a special place in my heart for every song by QOTSA. I get goosebumps when I hear them
@@77confusedzombie77 I'm not gonna lie I enjoyed the villains album but I saw the live a while back and I prefer Nick sing "Millionaire" and Mark singing " song for the dead". Unfortunately we will never see that from mark again, RIP.
It would be nice if josh got nick and Dave grohl back for a small tour.
Well, Lanegan is dead, and Nick isn't looking so great here. Drugs fucked them both up.
@@ciestatonite no shit sherlock
Ur Objectively wrong
Hes like a cross between charles manson and anton levea
👍✌🇬🇧
Glad you like it, mate.
@soundsphereclips4999 thank you! Very glad to have seen Kyuss live in London once.
Yeah Queens started their decline after Lullabies - I can’t believe how bad their last stuff has been - Homme seems to have lost his jam - seems almost Vegas or something now - maybe they’re being ironic or whatever but I haven’t heard a new song by theirs that rocks in years; just not to my taste at all.
On the other hand; the earlier stuff with Nick and Lanegan has aged very very well.
I can only agree on you about the last album.. that album is abysmal.. but ur right, qotsa never made anything like Songs for the Deaf and Lullabies.. by far one of the best albums ever written...
I think Josh just changed and developed, but I get what you mean about the rawness - thanks for checking out the video
@@2010georgian1 Songs was an incredible record. Thanks for checking out the video.
How is Era Vulgaris, Like Clockwork a decline? Villains is not everyone’s taste because it’s very poppy and colorful but most people enjoy it a lot. Just because the new stuff is not the same as the old stuff, doesn’t mean it’s bad. Like Clockwork is one of the best rock records ever.
Homme went and ruined the desert sessions new album as well :/
Qotsa will always be missing something w nick out of the picture
Cheers for checking it out!!
I wonder what queens would be like now if stuff didn't go down the way it did. I still love qotsa but nick deserved better, josh is no angel either.
Hurry up with the new Dwarves record.

He definitely has the meth head vibes but is mega talented too.
The Desert is Meth land. Always has been. I’ll say this tho, QOTSA has gotten far worse every album after crushing shit like Mexicola in the earlier days. They were monsters. “WERE” is a big word here. Seems like Homme and Eddie Vedder both love destroying great bands and are really good at it. One wants to be a tacky gyrating lounge singer in Vegas and the other thinks he’s Neil Young’s lost son which he’s not. Both are drunks on stage. Both killed legendary hard hitting talented bands.
Naked star 🤘🤘🤘
Meth - it's a helluva drug.

gonna leave you
Woman beater
Queens sucked after Nick and Lanegan departed for sure
Thanks for checking out the video!
Lanegan was never technically part of the band. He sang on several songs but that was it. Homme brought him in for a different sound and they knew each other well. Homme had played with Screaming Trees some towards the end to fill out the guitar sound. There's videos here on YT of Homme playing All I Know with the Trees.
No.
What about Like Clockwork? It's excellent.
@@RC-fi8nn yeah it’s an absolute masterpiece that album. Dunno why people are surprised their sound evolved
What was the craic with his departure. He beat the shit out of some woman?
He had charges pending for severely beating his woman and the story is he showed some "aggressive behavior" to fellow band mates in QOTSA. Or so the story goes.
Basically, Josh met Brody Dalle, fell head over heels for her, Nick started to feel like she was dividing the band/Josh's attention etc and so started acting aggressive towards him, then the domestic abuse rumors was kinda the last straw. He really should let him back in the band now though
Remember when JH used some chix head as a soccer ⚽️ ball .. ouch 🤕
