I was one of the lucky ones, who has had very little swelling after surgery. Now three months out I still have a little swelling above my knee. My calf is pretty much ok. I rode another thirty miles today on my bike. I'm going to wait until tomorrow morning to see if I can ride tomorrow. A little stiff and sore tonight but not bad. Still having pain on sides of my knee, but slowly improving.
Sounds like overall you are recovering great. The pain on the side of the knees usually improves as the ligaments and soft tissue adapt to the fit of the new knee.
How can one tell if the anti-inflammatory medicine is helping? I took Meloxicam before my TKR and it didn’t do anything as far as I could tell. Same post-surgery. My friend who had TKR says he has had similar experiences with Meloxicam. It has side effects. Thanks.
The medicine may be decreasing inflammation but not to the extent that is helping with pain management. Inflammation is a normal part of the healing process, so we don’t necessarily want to decrease it, just to the extent it helps with pain management. If you aren’t noticing a pain relief benefit then personally I would consult with your surgeons office or PCP to see if you can stop taking it and if there is an alternative if appropriate.
I’m 10 weeks out from TKR and I still have swelling. ROM is good at 120 degrees but my knee sometimes looked like a grapefruit. I use ice several times a day and elevate it but the swelling is very slowly reducing. I also wear a compression sleeve most of the time. Anything else I can do or should I just be patient and wait for the swelling to go away? Thanks.
Likely, over time this will continue to improve. If you continue to have swelling issues, ask your doctor about the potential for a referral to a lymphedema specialized therapist. They can provide manual therapy, wrapping, and other strategies to help managing swelling effectively.

@@KneeReplacementTherapists Thank you. That's what I was thinking. I have heard some anti-inflammatories work better on some people more than others.
