- Our look at the massively powerful, massively sized portable player from Fiio, their M17 flagship, and how in real world usage it compares to the former flagship (and my reference unit) the M15.

Your wish is coming true - the M15S is supposed to be released this month (March 2023). It's an updated M15, with the same (newer) Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC that is in the M17.
It is MAHOOSIVE, and I've been honeymooning with mine since Feb '23, using it in balanced output to my T+A Solitaire T headphones!
I absolutely do use the M17 in DC mode, where I have completely bypassed the battery.
In said DC mode, I am directly powering the 2x DAC's and 2x amps. You gain access to a fifth gain mode (Enhanced Over Ear Mode) pushing the amps to 3W @ 32 ohm per channel in balanced mode.
(I do use this on the included stand/fan for heat management, even if the battery is not used).
For me, I have four components for my headphone system:
- streamer/local source
- DAC
- headphone amp
- high-end headphones
Except the first three devices are all-in-one via the M17, which is essentially an audio desktop replacement unit!
I have the m11 and this is on my upgrade list at some point. Such a beast of a device
Did you eventually get one? I did.
@@JagadguruSvamiVegananda nope. I Am getting married so money is tight
Just bought mine on Monday.
And how has it been? I am planning to buy mine in two days :)
I'm getting one,M15 s sounds perfect to me. I just want a good sound in flac mode. So this beast can hold my 800 plus CD collection?
I have 380 ripped compact discs on my 512Gb microSD card. I also have a 1Tb microSD card but have yet to use it.
I have a Chord Electronics Hugo 2 with a 2Go streamer attached that creates a single unit roughly the same overall volume as the M17 (a bit longer and wider but only about 2/3rds the thickness of the M17) and is about 100g lighter. I'd say that both my Hugo2/2Go combo and the M17 are similar in terms of being "barely portable" but that works for me as a headphone amp for home use. The little bit of portability units like this have means that I can get up from my chair and go to the fridge or fetch a book or whatever and carry the amp/dac with me just for that minute or so rather than being tethered to my listening position and needing to pause the music and take off my headphones.
I'm actually considering switching to the M17 because I like the idea of having a screen on the device to select music without needing to fire up my tablet (I use Roon to stream my music so my music selection is done via the Roon Remote app running on an iPad but I could also install it directly on the M17 for more immediate access).
One trick that I think FiiO missed on portability is not putting little shoulder strap rings on the leather case so that someone could clip on a shoulder strap - worn cross-body that would be very safe and secure and for some people who really did want to use it when walking could have essentially solved the won't-really-fit-in-a-pocket issue. I suppose someone who really wanted to do that could sew on some attachment rings themselves but it would have been nice if FiiO had incorporated that into the design in the first place.
I have the Focal Utopia 2022… which one is the best DAP for it? (between the price range of 1000-2000USD)
I use m17 with the first utopia + 4.4 balance cable. It works perfectly and with the enhanced over-ear headphone mode on the FiiO M17, the sound is phenomenal end game!
Too much talk about how great it is. Nothing much about the intricacies or facets.
What a beast! No wonder it comes with its own stand!
You can use ANY desktop fan. I own several (I reside in the tropics).
I kinda Q7 guys...peace!
Good video.
