Thanks for this complete and objective review as usual:)
This is out of my price range, but I still love to see these reviews.
Mine arrived earlier this week, WOW. I went to my cafe this morning for breakfast and some reading, and brought my music as always. Paired with Ultrasone Signature DJ, the pairing sounded gorgeous. Very happy with this giant DAP!
congratulations on your purchase, and thank you for writing this comment. such feedback really motivates me!
Just got mine 😁 Big is beautiful. Moved over from Ibasso...hope it cuts the mustard. Gonna charge this beauty!. Will be pairing it with Sony MDR-Z1R.
@@bv3bv334 congratulation on purchase to you too!
Thanks for the detailed review.
Glad it was helpful!
Helpful!--Waiting for mine to be delivered today, lol.
congratulations! hope you'll like it
Cool review👍
The new m17 is eye candy 👀
I awarded myself with m11 plus LTD in October last year and I absolutely love it, it's the dominant piece of tech that I take with me almost everywhere! Looking at the m17 I remember what I wished was already used on the m11 LTD like the 1080p resolution and automatic screen rotation. But this is just because I am so use to phones already having these advances, I honestly don't hold it against my FiiO m11 LTD because I have tweaked it so much to my needs! Really with the snapdragon 660 and android 10 onboard there is support for a lot of great 3rd party software that can be greatly used here and enhance the overall functionality of this amazing device! I see how the m17 has advanced and gone steps ahead, and I can only say that FiiO is in a league of it's own and I will be looking into its future releases with great anticipation!
Thank you!
they gave me the fatality one, which has lamps, and yeah look cool in case
nice another TOTL ( wich i can't afford for it ) nice review pavlo! God Bless & keep healthy!
thank you! all the best wishes to you too!
Nice Review ! I don't think you need to remove the case to put it on the stand. The case has been made a little big loose to allow ventilation. Mine has never left its protective case.
thank you for sharing you practical experience, I'll try to use it in case for some time too
but actually on stand I prefer it without case, just from aesthetics perspective
HI :), so do i understand it correctly? In therm of sound do you prefer the m17 over the m8?
yep, I'm a fan of a more neutral signature
I'm pretty sure the fan stand won't do anything, but I like that it's included!
actually it does. in that ultra high power mode it helps DAP to chill
@@PortaFi well I guess it's like they say 1 fan is better than ambient temperature
Hi! I didn't quite understand the comparison with Fiio M15 at the end, the M15 is more weighty and worse at treble performance? Tx!
M17 is better
Nice enjoyed. Enjoyed it. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the review. Im currently using Fiio M11 Plus. How do you compare it with m11 plus as well as to SK SP2000 that you have?
Difference between M11 Plus and M17 is pretty big. Not huge, but I'd call it big. As for SP2000 - it's mentioned in comparisons at the end of the video. In short, it's better, but slightly
@@PortaFi m11plus is a very capable DAP to drive open back headphones. Also, nowadays dongle DAC like LP W2 is also capable to drive open back headphones. So i wonder why people need M17 with bigger power output? I notice in community, some people even pair their m11plus with cayin c9. Can you help me to understand what is their logic? Isnt m11plus powerful enough to drive most iems and HPs? Why we need M17 and C9?
@@ferryjunigwanmurdiansyah4307 mainly for really power-hungry cans. There are a bunch of such models, especially in the $1000+ segment. Speaking about M17 in particular, it's also more detailed and has a better control and stage compared to M11, for some people it can be a good enough reason for purchase :)
Thank you for the review good sir. I own the Fiio M15, would you say this is an upgrade sound wise? and would it be worth the extra money? I feel like the M15 hits every bell for me but I was wondering if this would be better. Thank you!
yes, M17 is better than M15 sonically. as for upgrade, main question here - do you own some full-size cans? it's an area where M17 shows his might at fullest )))
This DAP will be in my hand in thirteen hours from now (or should I say, "HANDS", since it's a tad too large for one-handed use).
:) sure, it's not that pocketable :)
@@PortaFi, unless one is wearing cargo pants. 🩳
nice review! what do you think is better pairing for my Focal Clear and Radiance - Fiio M17 or Astell and kern SP2000T.which one have better bass definition and goes lower in the bass..thanks!
Hello, I haven't heard Focal models, but my subjective vote goes for FiiO M17: perfect dynamics, great overall tuning, top notch control… Plus a possibility to work with external PSU to make it even better
Porta.Fi, another excellent review! Thank you. My reference audio rigs are A&K SP1000 and desktop Chord Qutest with Burson Soloist 3XP amp. I think the Chord Qutest can sound even better than the SP1000 and that's when I thought it would be great if you could ever listen to some Chord gear to hear your opinion on it! Big Greetings!!!
Thank you for sharing
I've listened briefly to Hugo 2 and Mojo, but it wasn't long enough :)
@@PortaFi It's a shame, hopefully you can bring some review to the channel. Especially for the invaluable observations you make about the sound and how it compares with other DAPs.
they have advantage in software drivers
nowadays scs are usbs which are no different from regular dacs
Thanks a lot for your review. It was really interesting to hear from you your opinion and other notes. is it correct that from what you have noted i understood that m17 goes the same way as other higher end fiio daps. That means natural (some say a little bit digital but not me), technical, high resolution sound without colorations (dead neutral and i always surprised when i hear fiio thx sound how it can so dead neutral). Is it similar to m11 plus in tuning? Of course understood that m17 even more developed but is it correct that it is the same tuning or the same philosophy? How m17 is compared to m11 plus when looking how good quality record it need ? Lets say if M11 plus was 7 from 10 so how much m17?
For me it's not "dead neutral". Yes, it's not coloured, really technical and dynamic, but with a high quality records it'll be really lively and musical
It share some similarity with M11 Plus, but does that on next level in terms of control, details, refinement, etc. It's less noticeable on sensitive IEMs, but with some power-hungry cans it'll be 11/10 :)
Great review! Does anyone know if it can act as Roon endpoint and whats the max sample rate in this mode? Is it limited by Android to 48kHz? Thanks!
I'm not a Roon user, so I can't answer here. It's better to ask this on Head-Fi.org, their audience is big and you'll definitely get an answer there
I gather this only has 1 sd card slot on the bottom? I ask as it does look like it has just 1 but there is another sd card shaped thing on the right side on the bottom of the player (looks to have writing on it too) what is it?
yes, only one slot. second one is decorative element
I own and really like the dx300 max but I really want to try the m17 too
It'll be great to hear your impressions, as unfortunately I skipped DX300 Max )))
@@PortaFi it’s very good. A very transparent dap with great layering. However the best part is the huge soundstage it gives. Highly recommended if you can get one in the used market
@@garygriffiths7353 I'm certain that DX300 Max is good :) D220 Max was great, and this one should be even better :)
Hi Pavo, Thank you for the in-depth review. I really value your vids as I believe there're the most informative on youtube being un-biased and thorough. I do though have a question about this unit which relates to the paired down Android 'Fiio music' mode. As I mainly use LDAC on my devices, which are all AK and free of all App. logo's etc. (which is my preference on a player) I need now to find a unit which supports 2TB of external memory for my ever increasing library. Unfortunately AK at present do not offer that option on any of their players. I have learnt recently that the ibasso DX 320 in paired down mode does not offer bluetooth playback, is this also the case with the M17? Thank you in advance...
Hello, thank you for your kind words.
I'm not sure, what you mean by "paired down mode" here. USB Audio mode? Or something else.
By the way, if you mainly listen to music wirelessly, inexpensive Android smartphone can be a decent option for that scenario. And you can easily find one with lots of storage.
Oh, Hello again. Wasn't sure if I was making myself clear in the beginning. My point is I don't like all the icons on the screen i.e. google, spotify, and all that other stuff. I like simplicity and am bothered by a cluttered screen. Is there a way of eliminating all the icons and still use the unit via bluetooth as this is not possible with the ibasso as mentioned. When you showed the M17 on your video set on 'fiio music' the screen switched to a much more desirable aesthetic which I found favourable, that's what I meant by 'paired down' . I upload my daps via iriver on my laptop and it is mainly my own collection that I rip. I never use a streaming service. Just being anal that's all. I also use balanced output to an amplifier and occasionally use headphones. @@PortaFi
In pure music mode you can access WiFi/Bluetooth settings with the drop-down menu, so you'll be able to use them
Another option is to find the launcher that will suit your needs and tastes. It's Android, and there are lot of different options for launcher with different aesthetics. I'm an iOS user, so I don't know exact names, but they are defintiely exist :)
Great detailed review Porta.fi!
As Kann Alpha too has lot of power to run full sized headphones, how would you compare them interms of their strengths & weakness.
in terms of sound M17 beats Alpha (as well as vast majority of other players), it's more refined, more dynamic, more natural, what is usually called "next level". as for disadvantages, M17 is more expensive and even less portable. in comparison Alpha looks like a pretty compact solution :)
I would like to ask you whats your recommendation for device which is enhanced deeply bass and strong
Almost all modern DAPs will give you a deep and strong bass. If you want a slight emphasis on weight, take a look at Shanling models.
But in general, it's more logical to add coloration to the sound with headphones
@Porat.fi and everybody else - I need some advise. Right guys, my on the go set up is a Fiio M11 and a pair of FA7 iem's. I use these on a daily basis during my walk and is normally tucked in my jean or jacket pocket for anything up to 2 to 3 hours at a time. At home I have an old duet (which I may replace soon with a Fiio K9 pro) and a pair of Adams 7 monitors for my set up. So as you can see I am serious about my music. That said, can anyone tell me if the M17 is portable and can it used and housed as previously mentioned, Will it perhaps overheat over such length of time and usage? Basicly will be as practical as the M11 and should I also replace the FA7's with anything else (I do not want anything that is over the ear)?
I don't mind even buying lets say a seperate belt pouche.. I hope you all get the idea and I look forward to any suggestions, because it looks a like a great unit but is it practical? Perhaps you can let me know of your experince!
Hello, subjectively, I can't call M17 pocketable. You can carry it in jacket pocket, but not in jeans. Or you can consider some kind of shoulder bag to carry it. It won't overheat if you won't use turbo mode (overall it makes on sense for IEMs). But also subjectively, I don't think it make sense to use it on the go, it's more of a DAP for home listening
@@PortaFi Thank you my friend not just honesty, but your analysis. You really help me decide.
Have you try compare with Shanling M9?
no, unfortunately I don'g have M9
is the thieaudio prestige ltd a good combo with this one?
I didn't test this model, but as it's a really good player, I think it's self to assume that it'll sound good with them )))
I'm curious how L&P P6 Pro compare to Fiio M17.
Fiio M17 is much cheaper than P6 Pro, I really want to know how big is the gap between M17 and P6 Pro in terms of music feelings.
unfortunately I didn't test L&P's recent creations
Great review :D
I'm interested in getting the m17, however, I'd love to know if there's any way of connecting a microphone for voice recording to it. I want to get a laptop and connect the m17 to it and have like a portable recording/music creation station. Would this be possible? Anyone who can chip in with an opinion would be appreciated, thanks ^^
no, it doesn't have such feature
BTW, if you need a portable recording studio, CEntance has a plenty of them
Can it run power Amp ?
it has line out, so it can be used with some power amps, but it's necessary to check the specs for matching
Is the battery replaceable ?
not by a user. maybe in service center…
how does this compare to sp1000
sorry, I didn't have SP1000 for a really long time (had to sold it to get SP2000 :) )
Sounds like a KGB agent reviewing a James Bond’s gadget 😆
sorry, but for me KGB references are just a reminder of long period of unpleasant soviet past of my country
I totally understand your joke, slavic accent is pretty easy to distinguish :)
@@PortaFi those times were so bad that they should never repeat, but the accent seriously sounds like a Russian villain in a Bond movie 😄 nevertheless the review is detailed and great. Keep up the good work 👍🏼
@@cvetantodorovski I'm Ukrainian, but in general yes, the accent is kinda similar :) Probably all east Slavonians will have it :)
@@PortaFi Good luck at this hard times, hope peace prevails
Let me speak from my heart 😁
Wow 3 quadrillion femtowatts in a portable, what a time to be alive
How many watts is this? Comparable to Ibasso dx300 max?
@@ThreeDogShow the dx300 only puts out a measly .0000000000000000000000024YW
Thanks for the review..... But your not helping my Hi-Fi addiction, already having tingling sensation about purchasing this Unit, Or do I wait for the FiiO M19 ?????? (Laughing)
I'm really sorry about addiction (I'm in the same boat :) ), as for M19… M17 took about 2 years to be made, most probably M19 will take no less. But who knows :)
The original Gameboy and Game Gear are portable and they're bigger than that.
well, a bit different usage scenarios :) gameboy you're holding in from of you when using, while typical portable player should live in pocket )))
As an engineer expressing 3 Watts as 3000 milliwatts just sounds silly.
Thank you Monsieur engineer
I think it's silly when people identify by what they do and what they have, rather than who they are.
unfortunately we don't live in the world ruled by engineers…
but looking at some things around me, maybe it's not bad :)
P.S. I also like that screen dimensions declarations for smarthpones like 18:9…
