Spicy peter pan is one thing, but "boy with a presence of a man" may or may not deserve a 20 year sentence 💀
Not 20 years 😂
Straight to jail do not pass go do not collect $200
The jail is your tomb at this point. I'm sorry WHY!?
It shouldve been man with the presence of a boy but that is just every manchild ever
Non sequitur here, but talking about ‘boy with the presence of a man’ thing; does anyone else think the Tom Hanks movie “Big” has some very, very dodgy vibes? Considering the main character is literally 13 years old.
“There’s a fairy p*rn out there for everyone, I just haven’t found mine yet.”
Yes! That’s the spirit!
“I do believe in fairies, I do I do” 🤣
@angryotter9129 That's the sprite! 🤭🧚♀️
‘The Never King’ is one of the hardest titles I’ve heard of and I’m so sad it was wasted on this book
The cover would absolutely draw me in as well. I would have thought it to be a grimdark fantasy involving a fight for the throne and a lot of death in it.
And the cover too, like if I saw this as a teenager I would 1000% have bought it
@@basementdwellercosplay Name checks out-agreed I would’ve done the same, and been…so confused and so disappointed
Fun Fact, in the US, titles are not copyrightable, only how they're designed.
So, much like Fifty Shades of Grey, the fifty page book of grey color palettes, you too can have a book called The Never King. You'll probably still be taken to court but hey, others have won over less
Who was it that said “if you have to say it’s not technically incest, it’s still incest”?
They were right 😂
That’s from Umbrella Academy I think, I think Klaus says it
@@foxlover6770Luther x Allison is gross as fuck and Klaus knows it
@@foxlover6770yeah it is klaus says “If you have to say technically you’re already in trouble” when allison’s trying to explain her and luther dating
I think it’s a buzzfeed unsolved quote too but I could be wrong
Admittedly if someone had said "cut the fish from the mouth to the anal bone" at my kitchen job we woulda spent a good five minutes yelling jokes about it, so maybe MC is just line cook coded 😂
“Kids who grew up in the 90s- early 2000s, turned out to be bisexual, and became obsessed with Once Upon a Time” I didn’t expect to be so specifically called out-
Right? Same 😂 way too many people to thirst over there, you can't be contained by gender
You could tell this book wasn't going to be good when the Goodreads page unironically had '"touch her and I'll unalive you' vibes" listed as something you could expect from it.
A lot of people seem to like that
@@Financiallyfreeauthor im pretty sure it was the fact that "unalive" was used instead of 'kill'. tiktok censoring already sounds icky enough on it's own, its even worse when it's on sites that don't require it.
i was just checking out the synopsis and the moment i came across that sentence i almost choked lmao. I have never seen a tiktok censor be used on a professional publication and to see that was so out of place and only gave me the impression the author might be chronically online.
I can't not read "let's fill her up, brother" in a Hulk Hogan voice XD
Why is dark fantasy always “I want to brutalize the female love interest” and never “I want her to step on me”? Hmm? Where are all the scary MLs who get the tables turned on them when the FL enters her villain arch?
I'm still obsessed with this cover, but dark romance is a nope for me, and i'm pretty sure the nopes will only multiply by the end of this video 😂
I was scrolling through my subscription videos really quick and I thought this video was about the Locked Tomb books 💀🕶️
Same. I refuse to read dark anything because I'm too empathetic and it throws me into an awful mental state
That cover is so creepy.
Same. I'd have loved the cover to enclose something that is more horror and less horrifying. Dark romance and me do not match and dark romance books without trigger warnings are not something I'd even want to touch.
Same, same. Dark romance is a hard nope for me!
23:07 Hmmm no you're right, this sounds like incest with extra steps. It feels like something Cassandra Clare would write.
This
I burst out laughing. Very descriptive and I love it.
Pretty sure Brownies are a fairytale creature. I remember them being in fairy books I read as a child in the UK.
Yes, they are a 'wilder' version of fairies
I’m pretty sure they’re a legitimate part of Celtic folklore
Yeah brownies are UK folklore. I used to be in the brownies as a kid
actual explanation, though, they're pixies that help you do housework when you sleep but also punish you if you're lazy and I think they will be offended if you try and give them gifts and will leave. They tend to stay with the same land/family.
Damn I really don’t know shit… can I blame growing up in fundieland for not knowing this 😂
Idk why but "Ass and Bash" has me in tears I WISH those were their real names
Never cared about Peter Pan but your idea of the main girl’s mom being strong and wanting to train her daughter would be interesting. Also cloudberries are a real fruit from Nordic countries. I only know this because Ikea sells jam with this fruit. Also brownies are a type of household sprite, but yea I actually wanted an actual chocolate brownie.
I shit you not, I thought of a giant chocolate monster while reading this book... 😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️
Yeah cloudberries actually also grow in canada and northern usa!
I got so upset when I saw cloudberries being written off as a fantasy thing since I grew up eating them with my family haha
OHHHHHH! I used to work somewhere where I met a lot of children and one day there was a little girl named Cloudberry. We thought her parents made it up and that it was pretty, but weird. I had no idea it was a real berry.
The funny thing was she went by Cloud and we had a set of twins we saw sometimes named Cloud and Sephiroth. So until we learned Cloudberry's full name we thought we had two kids named after Cloud Strife in our office lmao
@@jasminv8653 They do?! That's awesome, I'd heard that they mostly grow in Finland and can't really be cultivated for farming. But hearing that they're also over on this side of the pond is really neat.
"Mommy, can we get Peter Pan?"
"We have Peter Pan at home, hun."
Peter Pan at home: 💀
"No shadow = no sunlight" sounds like something from the Thriller Bark arc of One Piece, where villain Moria's ability to remove people's shadows made it such that they would disintegrate in direct sunlight.
Never expected to see a One Piece reference here of all places
That’s exactly where my mind went!
As a twin, I'm also creeped out by the twin thing. Horrified, actually.
No joke, the sequel to this book has even worse twin stuff, like straight vomit.
I would know. (Didn't read it, watched a rant review lol)
The way that Rufio from the Peter Pan movie had a CHOKEHOLD on me back in the day and I didn't know why until I realize he was also Zuko from Last Airbender. Dante Basco bi panic King 👑
I love dark romance IN THEORY but I haven’t actually encountered any books in the genre I’ve liked. I would love if someone could write a half decent sapphic dark romance but until then I’m on ao3 reading house of the dragon fics 🤣
It's not spicy but I really enjoyed a lesson in vengeance
The Killing Eve fandom has that covered lol
@@andiman44 so true, I love Killing Eve
these books are so silly when you're used to ao3 writing
What do you think about Tryst Six Venom?
This story would do well in the PWP tag on AO3 so it makes sense why tiktok would be all over it
If I want a villainous Pan I'll re-watch OUAT
Exactly
if i may ask, what is OUAT? i've never heard of it and i love Peter Pan. is it a movie or series? if so, where can i watch it?
@@acarfullofclowns im assuming once upon a time? youll have to look it up because i dont remember much about it, but i think thats what theyre talking about.
Brownies are a folklore creature from Scottish mythology. They’re little house spirits or hobgoblins that help out with chores.
If you’re okay with monster smut, A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne was 5 stars for me and you actually see them fall in love rather than just lust.
Although the smut scenes can be strange. Haha
@@victoriamastersyeah they use the work “milking” a lot 😅
@@CaptainTrasha lol I forgot about that 😂 but I actually like the couple and their relationship so much better than most romance books I read 😭😂 maybe it’s impossible to find the perfect book
@@victoriamasters I love the series too 😂 I just giggle every time I read “milking”.
@@CaptainTrasha I don't have a "won't read it if it says this" response to "milking" as a term, but it's certainly close...so thanks for the warning lmao.
I hear about stuff like this being big on booktok, with its degrading dirty talk and dark edgy activity, and I look over to another chunk of the internet loosing their minds over the ships in Good Omens and Our Flag Means Death, which canonically are full of support, tenderness, and genuine affection (built on engaging interesting characters)... and I wonder where the wires go wonky, where the thread got dropped, who moved the rock, etc. I want to study this phenomena under a microscope with morbid curiosity.
I think there's very little overlap between the two and I don't believe they really interact? I think it's kinda unfair to compare them lol. Booktok is very niche-based, so I understand why works like this that are more "out there" can get big. It's very much a "you know what you're here for" type of community. GO/OFMD fandoms are based on shows made for general public, so ofc ppl who like it will go crazy over "softer" pairings in canon instead of tiddy slapping
Also probably unrelated, but as someone who consume/create GO fanworks: the adult side of the fandom is full of kinky bitches too (saying this affectionately). People saw angel/demon snake pairing and I can tell you, there are way darker stuff in the depths (sometimes on the surface tbh) than this. No matter how fluffy the canon is sometimes people really just like that edge lol
@@h2o2630 I can't speak for everyone, but I enjoy dark fiction and sometimes dark romance (though not this one ofc) and the appeal is basically the same as horror, which is somehow a far more socially acceptable thing to enjoy. I personally like the psychological aspect of dark romance where I feel like ppl allow themselves to explore their characters freely without fearing backlash for setting a bad example bc well, dark romance is not meant to set an example, especially for young readers.
Dark romance also offers a space for ppl to indulge in things that would be dangerous IRL safely since media consumption allows you to opt out of situation whenever you like. It's the ultimate safeword of closing the book and DNF-ing it. It's the same reason why some ppl use it to cope with past SA, where they feel like they're actually in control of the situation. For some folks who are especially repressed the "forceful" nature of the "romance" may allow them to engage in "sinful" behavior without feeling like they're also taking the blame, and it allows them to do so in fiction safely. "Abuse coded as 'love'" is a legit technique in writing a story to understand the victim's perspective and I don't think it should be dismissed.
Sorry for the long reply but you did say you'd devour a five hour video essay so things got outta hand lol
Having been on booktok, I have to say that I've not seen the same people in both circles. Either they're obsessing about Good Omens (haven't seen Our Flag Means Death, but if it's in the same category as Good Omens, I'm down!), OR they're going mad over this stuff. It's like how there are people who like horror, but supernatural horror people and torture porn people don't tend to overlap so much. At least, that's my experience.
@@losj3020 That's very interesting, actually - I never considered that
Random, but I swear this book just made me think every scene stank. Like on page, I kept thinking, "I bet that room stanks," the weirdest phenomenon that only ever happened to me during this one book 😂😅
The raw stench of sex really emanates from this book. Like, they must smell…
@@lilly7550 Idk if the showers were supposed to be implied. But whew, I do not believe the showers were happening man😫
Cloudberries are actually a real fruit! They look pretty cartoonish (kind of like an orange blackberry) and they grow in the northern parts of europe and north america. I've never had them in pancakes though.
Came here to say this. I've tried cloudberry jam and it's quite good. The berries themselves apparently don't last long at all once they've been picked.
Oh! Thats what they are called in english? Did not know that. I love to have cloudberry jam to waffles.
“Nobody tell my mom I’m reading smut.”
Me, who lives for drama: 😈
I guess I was a bit older than the target audience for that version of _Peter Pan,_ but I really loved the way that it handled the topic of young teen "blossoming" sexuality, but in subtext rather than something more overtly titillating. It also did really well in staying true to the main themes and plot points of the original novel while still being it's own version of the Barrie story.
I read books 1, 2, and 3 because I liked the potential of the non-existent plot in this book so much. I thought maybe she would get more plot-centric as she went...she didn't...and I kept telling my partner that I wished someone would re-write this story, but without all the PPs
She really shows she has the potential in the ideas! I wish she’d dive in and make full length books that really get elbows deep into the lore and plot rather than elbows deep in the… well, you kniw
I mean... AO3 exists.
The Sprouse brothers would 100% take this role in a live-action of this book
"This is not about plot, it's about penis" may be my new favorite phrase.
But Ass & Bass is clearly a fishing themed pron mag, and i CANNOT. 😂
Okay but cloudberry is a real berry, it's from northern europe and grows in a swamp. It's orange and resembles a small, firm raspberry!
I had a weird crush on Hook when I watched that movie as a kid 😅
I mean, it's Jason Isaac's, how could you not?
Yeah I was expecting rachel to say 'and then i grew up and realised Hook was the hot one' but I guess it wasn't as universal as I thought 😢
Same
The Child Thief by Brom is a _muuuuch_ better contender for a 'dark Peter Pan' novel, with the addition of Arthurian myth.
Brom's books are gorgeous. I love them.
Man, I'm honestly really bummed to say that I like the concept of "every generation the women of my family disappear on the night of their eighteenth birthday and, if they ever come back, always come back traumatized"...like that sounds legit engaging to me. It makes me wonder why, who did it, is it a curse? But boy is this book a slog. Honestly, it's a huge shame how many decent/interesting concepts get wasted on mediocre smut. I'm a relatively sex-positive asexual person who tends to write their own smut for fun (because that's what it's supposed to be, fun.) But this so did not do it for me.
I am so glad this "twin brothers just fucking the same girl at the same time" is weird to others too, I thought I was losing my mind... I would just crumple up and die if my sister saw me having sex
As a millenial whose first Fandom was HP... I was not surprised by the twin thing.
It was not a rare pairing to see some set of twins with a Main Character (self-insert).
Exposure to this phenomenon has not decreased my squick over it.
You seriously deserve an award for being able to keep a straight face for as much as this review as you did! And when you did laugh, it just added to the review honestly. I am so thankful I put this book back on the shelf when I was at the book store
Maybe it’s a straight face or maybe it’s 💕dying inside💕
@@ReadswithRachel I greatly appreciate you sacrificing your insides for the cause 👍🏻❤️ I do feel bad for how much I snort laughed out loud at your suffering

Absolutely 😁 Hook is definitely my number 1 from the show
They knew what they were doing introducing Regina as the Evil Queen in a power-pant-suit-cape-dress situation with her hair in a pony tail and bad girl makeup. She was looking hot and mean.

The thing about peter pan smut is that peter pan's whole THING is that he is a child and will be forever.
As someone who read the original Peter Pan and thought Peter was so annoying and genuinely awful AND thinks kidnapping is bad I don’t understand how this is hot 💀 but also I don’t particularly find men attractive so
Isn't there a part in the original where its also implied that Peter kills the Lost Boys that start to get too old?
The idea of dark romance is so appealing to me, but so far, every dark romance I’ve found is just Lust, badly written smut, and taboo subjects. Not actual dark material or themes mixed with romance. It’s so disappointing.
Oh man, I read this book literally last month. I have many, many regrets.
At least it was short.
I saw the audiobook length in that brief moment where Rachel showed it on screen and went "dang at least the people who got disappointed didn't waste like a whole day on this"
@@ixeliema After the sample she played, I’m so glad I opted for a visual read. 💀
oooh i tried reading this one (and it was my first and LAST contact with the dark romance genre) but it felt so much like badly written fanfiction i couldn't read past the pancake scene
This is also where I stopped reading.
Same here. Plus I’m not into why choose
I agree it was too cringy to continue. I’ve read an amazing fanfic called “manacled” though. It’s a beautiful tragic love story between Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy in which Voldemort won the war and the story was inspired by the Handmaid’s tale. The book has 900 pages but it’s so worth the read.
sounds like an amazing set up for a horror story, combining peter pan with nightmare old fairy lore, if only one would have gone with that
Cloudberries are yellow berries that look sort of like raspberries that grow in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, and Alaska. I have picked them in the marshlands here in Finland (names for it in finnish: Muurain, Lakka, Hilla) and they are rather sour berries that make a nice jam. (: The berries like a cold and wet climate and can be picked in the fall.
I love these berryfacts!
Oh god I was starting to forget my unhinged behavior in the OUAT fandom. The early 2010s were a wild time.
I was today years old when I realized the 1980s movie The Lost Boys was a Peter Pan reference. I only figured it out because of how many times you said Lost Boys in this video and the vampire movie came to mind first. I have never said I'm quick. I'm from the sexy vampire era (Rice not Twilight) not the sexy faerie era, okay?!
So, when you played that audio clip, I almost had a conniption because that narrator sounds a LOT like Steve West, who plays Callum in The Atlas Six audiobook, and I looked it up to make sure it wasn’t an auditory hallucination, and it’s not-the narrator for this book is named Shane East, which is still making me giggle. 😂
Never heard of this book but based on that thumbnail…. Oooh boy, we’re in for a *treat*
A cloudberry treat
Matt Rife being fan cast as Peter Pan is sooo f💀 funny to me for some reason 😂😂😂
Yep brownies (or brawnies) are a thing in celtic mythology, I know in Ireland they're supposed to be household spirits who would tidy up when nobody was around and you would leave things like cream out as a thank you.
"READY TO FILL HER UP BROTHER?" -Hulk Hogan 😂
See I have yet to ever read a dark romance that wasn’t just horrible misyogny and serious lack of consent or boundaries. I get that it’s suppose to be a grey area but I can’t with men that would kill the woman they love cause they just love her so much and that seems to be a theme in almost all of these! 😂 I’m just gonna stick to fantasy that may or may not have smut. Dark romance isn’t for me. The feminist can never leave my body. 😂😂😂
I find toxic dinamics interesting sometimes (like a detective and a serial killer or just two unstable people) but books called Dark Romance are just "he will torture the lead and its sexy"
@@shortinsomniac76 one of the ONLY dark romances I like are ones where the fmc is the serial killer and the dude is the good guy. 😂 gotta flip the gender expectations for me to be ok with it. 😂
@@shortinsomniac76like the mindfuck series is one of the ONLT dark romances I own. 😂 I own two. 😂
Tbh I enjoy dark romance only if I can see WHY the person (usually the man) who is fucked up is, well, fucked up. I remember enjoying the visual novel "Diabolic lovers: Haunted Dark Bride" (because there is a whole series of these dark romance vampire games) and enjoying the MOST out there outrageous and unwell male lead of them all just BECAUSE I could see how this all started, how this all affected him and his brothers, how despite all of these issues that 3 of them have they are still SO codependent, he still loves them and listens to them, but also tries to not love ANYONE because that's what their abuser did and it's just ugh so good. Also the fact that HDB has these really good dark endings where you can see that even in "good" ending where female lead seems to be happy with this unhinged man she didn't really "fix him" she, most often, became WORSE with him and FOR him and looking at al of these cycles in which abuse goes is kinda fascinating for me 😂
For me the best dark romances involve the characters doing fucked up things *for* each other and not *to* each other. Not that the relationship itself can't be unhealthy, but it's important for me to feel like they actually love each other on some level.
It's funny, when I read the title I thought you were talking about the other booktok spicy dark romance Peter Pan retelling. Turns out there's another one.
What other ones are there???
It’s so cathartic hearing you talk about this travesty of a book 😂 I read the first three and there are truly no words
I was actively eating on my lunch break when you said “and then he spit in her mouth”. Thank god there are people around me or I would have screamed.
Peter, the can’t-go-out-unless-it’s-dark-one 😂
OMG I had this on my tbr because someone said it was "the best Peter Pan retelling." I just added it to Storygraph and didn't look into it... I am so glad you did this video, because it is now off my tbr. Yikes

Tiger lily was a more adult retelling of peter pan that i really enjoyed. Its not about the darling girls however.
I read that book in high school and I loved it!!
Oh, I also want a why choose romance that cultivates longing first and then we get to the lust, the order really matters to me here ksksk😅😂
I continually got more shocked and it didn't think that was possible as someone who grew up with fan fiction.
MaybeRec?: I really enjoyed the Coven of Bones duet by Harper L. Woods. It's witch/demon and the smut is more secondary to the plot but, IMO (as a dark romance girly with zero triggers) was written enjoyably and made sense for the book rather than it being forced into the story inorganically.
Oh that sounds good thanks!
I loathe cliffhangers so I read the first two books that were out at the time and could not give a shit less by the time the next book was out. What sucked me in was the lore. I am so easily taken in by the barest hint of an interesting backstory that I was able to overlook the cringe and stay with it that far. I just can't maintain that curiosity for however long it takes for the next book to come out. Now, if it's a character I'm attached to that's a different story.
"Sexy Peter Pan" creeps me out because I grew up watching Hook, and that other live-action Peter Pan came out when I was in high school.
Appreciate the visuals continuing, it helps jeep track of people. You didnt have to but thank you!
As a visual learner, I gotta look out for my fellow visual learners ❤️❤️
K. Ancrum is so chaotic gremlin but such a cool person, this video got an instant like the moment you recommended one of her books.
Brownies are a type of Fae found in Scottish folklore I think they are more goblin like. I don't know if they are exclusive to that area they were just in a book I read that pertained to scottish folklore. I got really into Kelpies a few years ago.
I want dark ROMANCE, not just dark SMUT. Some authors really don’t understand that 😒
cloudberries are real! but they grow on mountains. not sure where they got them on and island near the sea
They grow in wetlands actually

Your first few words made me think of a book I read several years ago called Lost Boi. It was a Peter Pan retelling, and I thought it was just like a modern version of it. But no. Wendy was a lesbian, Peter and all the Lost Boys were trans, and Captain Hook and his crew were part of a BDSM sex club. There were "scenes" between Captain Hook in Peter--I just remember one scene where Peter was suspended in the air to make it seem like he was flying. It was a very bizarre book and honestly ruined Peter Pan for me....I'm thinking this book review might also do the same. Who knows?🤷♀
This is like that guy who watched a hocus pocus porn parody thinking it was a sequel as a kid
Brownies are a friendly house elves, they are self domesticed elves. They clean your house at night and like to stay hidden and don't really ask for payment. I love this kind of stuff
If I remember from when they popped up in readings as a child, 'Brownies' are a type of sprite? Kind of like a tiny elf (I grew up on Elfquest graphic novels so my elves have always been closer to human height) ... like you would picture in the elves & the shoemaker? Gnome height or smaller I think? usually either troublemakers, or extremely helpful. Depends on whom is telling the story I suppose.
Wendy Darling by Colleen Oaks is great and is a trilogy that is a dark romance that doesn’t promote the toxic partner. A great read I read all three books in three days I was so hooked.
matt rife genuinely looks like he eats sheet metal
Cloudberries are really good! You find them in the North in places like Norway and Newfoundland. You can buy cloudberry stuff online -- like teas, candy, jam. I can't describe it, except they taste like happiness
the fancasting of matt rife as peter pan aged chef’s kiss beautifully
i thought this was about Hooked at first 🤡 why is there so many books about fucking peter pan characters 😭😭😭
This should’ve stayed in the Wattpad drafts
I'm glad I didn't judge this book by its cover. I loved the cover but I noped out when I saw "fantasy romance" on Goodreads. I learned my lesson after ACOTAR.
18:17 brownies are another type of fairy, they basically just live in people's houses fixing things and stuff, but they hate being acknowledged lol not sure why they were included in this tho
The ick is strong in this sordid tale...
I'm insanely particular with my narrator voices too. I'll nope right out of it if I don't like the narrator.
THE 2003 PETER PAN FILM OMG. “I do believe in fairies” 😭
A badass cover with a badass title...for an 18-plus Peter Pan retelling?
I read all of the books and liked them, and it's what got me like dark romance, but I agree that the smut scenes did get in the way of the "plot," and it wouldn't have hurt the story to make Winnie older.
From how you've described the main character, it sounds like how I'd like to behave if men werent weird and gross about sex.
No brain cells just sex? Yup sounds like me.
A MUCH better execution of the evil fae cursing each generation of women with mental illness is "Impossible" by Nancy Werlin. No smut. TW: for SA. but its so so good. I read it in high school on recommendation from my English teacher. It's based on the Scarborough Fair ballad.
10:24 This part for every book or show where self defense is gatekept lol! Number one that comes to mind is Buffy/Giles never teaching Dawn to fight.
Not the titty slap! I'm dying. 🤣
I heard that and thought of the “GLOVE SLAP! BABY GLOVE SLAP!” Love Shack parody from The Simpsons. “TIT SLAP! BABY TIT SLAP!”
Ha. Bi panic is nothing compared to ASEXUAL PAN-IC
