The thing that drove me crazy when this book came out, and continues to drive me crazy TODAY, is that this is not a Beauty and the Beast retelling. It's a Psyche and Eros retelling. But marketing thinks we're stupid so it's labeled B&B and now that's what everyone says.
ACOTAR being Psyche/Eros makes so much more sense, especially in the context of ACOMAF being Hades/Persephone.

It can be both bec. Beauty and the Beast, the animated movie was definitely an inspiration.
It's actually namely a Ballad of Tam Lin retelling, but 'Janet' is given the family backstory of the original Beauty and the Beast.
The Cauldron Scene in the end of book 2 is the perfect encapsulation of SJMs fav structure. Book must be 90% flirting/romance and 10% zooming thru important plot points

YA novels are intended for age ranges up to 18. So it makes sense that some of them have sex. Personally I think the intended range of 12-18 is too broad. If my 16-18 year old teen child wanted to read some smut I would tell them fine but don't talk about it in public, but if my 12 year old did I would be uncomfy. So the range is just too big

I always feel like that kid in the meme, going "have you... have you ever dre-... have you ever had a dream where- you" but is about the most wild plot points in ya/new adult romantasy.

This was really fun to listen to. I'm glad i'm not the only one who hates Elain lol. I don't like that the characters seemed to love her just bc she had a more pleasant disposition, even though she's guilty of a lot of the same "sins" as Nesta. I'll never get over how her special activity "gardening" as opposed to Nesta's dancing and Feyre's painting, could have been really useful when they were poor to grow food, but it's never brought up. Girl should have been planting carrots or something instead of flowers. lol.

I am so excited about this as someone who just explained ACOTAR to my husband! I'm reading the series for the first time (it's okay. It's like fun, really cringy trash tv). I was explaining everything that happens in it in great detail to my husband while we were cleaning my father's house, and my dad couldn't stop laughing over HOW HARD my husband was trying to hang on and process all the information I was throwing at him. He would be like "and Laurent-" "Lucian!" "Right, Lucian!-" and my dad would just laugh and laugh. It may be a mediocre book, but it has brought a lot of laughter to my husband, myself, and my 70 year old father! I'll never be an ACOTAR girlie, though....

(possible spoilers for series but I'm not finished with it!) I've been churning through the Graphic Audios of the ACOTAR series and I just finished ACOWAR (that acronym had to be on purpose. I'm sure there is discourse about that but I've been avoiding spoilers for the series so haven't looked at online chatter too much haha!) Anyway these are the things that make me want to rip my hair out:
-I can literally predict every single time Feyre is about to say it's a scene she could paint (but does she even paint anymore??? she only painted like once this whole series so far) because it's ALWAYS
-mate mate mate mate mate
-male male male male male
-a billion and a half plot conveniences
-This might be a me thing but I feel like I still don't understand how the magic works. and who has what powers and why. and what powers feyre has. Like yes she has powers from all the high lords now but she doesn't actually ever do anything with it? I keep waiting for this big reveal thing about how Feyre uses her ultimate power and then NOTHING HAPPENS EVER. Also they keep saying Rhys is the most powerful high lord... but why? show don't tell!!!!!!!! okay rant over just needed to get that off my chest haha
When I first heard you say, "Night Court", I immediately thought of the 80's sitcom with Harry Anderson. That's an image I never thought I'd associate with ACOTAR. Haha!

Ya know I'm still thinking about what you said in your Left Behind vid. It left me with a lot to think on tbh, but particularly the statment about how your parents didn't want you to marry your husband has really stood out to me. Me personally, I know I can't do the whole military wife thing, but GOD THEY'RE SO DUMB. Your husband is honestly a gem. So funny, so sweet...really smart and witty. You guys have a really nice relationship and I enjoy watching you interact because I can tell you aren't one of those couples people look at and wonder "why did they even get together, do they even love each other". Sad part is that this might be the "better" book in the Court of Series (or what my buddies who only like Book 1 of the Court of Series and now call It's Rhysand's World and Everyone Else Gotta Suck Up to Him) given what happens in Silver Flames weird Force-Birther storyline and the strange hatred and lack of understanding towards Nesta's "abusive and selfish behavior", yet the same series overlooks Rhysand's SA of Feyre cause he felt bad about it I guess and did it to make Tamtam jealous and using his ruler powers to withholding of vital information of Feyre's pregnancy to protect his own feelings over Feyre's well being and the baby.
I'm so excited!!! You two are a comedy gold together! But damn, it's past midnight and I really wanna sleep😅...

So, the mask thing is because this first book is a beauty and the beast retelling, but it’s ALSO based on Eros and Psyche, (which is what BnB is based on, so it’s kind of redundant, but okay) and in that myth, Psyche is not allowed to see Eros, so he’s just invisible the whole time. And SJM thought masks would be better than invisibility because Tam Sandwich is hot, I guess. And the Rhysand deal is a clumsy segue into Hades and Persephone-land.
I never understood the Rhysand part. Why did SJM got us invested in Tamlin in the 1st place?! I never read the book but if I did, I would have been so mad.
@@moustik31 This may just be speculation, but I heard SJM originally intended Feyre to stay with Tamlin, but the fans liked Rhysand more, so she basically fix-it fic'ed her own book in the sequel.

I wonder, if SJM intended for F. to break the "mating bond" and still end up with Tamlin. Had I been her editor at the time, I would have advised for a throuple since Rhysand and Tamlin have chemistry too.
