AO3 figured out the trigger warning spoiler problem years ago. You just put the trigger warnings at the end and tell the reader where to find it in the beginning. Then people can decide if they need to look at it or not.

Ao3 also very explicitly has an option to opt out of the warning system entirely. I think the choice not to give content warnings is a valid one and it is in itself a warning. There have always been options for people who want to know if a given work has material that would trigger them specifically. The DoesTheDogDie website exists for precisely this reason.

After quite a few years as a college/uni professor, including some incredible gigs working with older adult students who had often been told earlier on they "weren't college material," I concluded that the only stupidity is the decision to stop learning. And "learning" in this context goes way beyond formal schooling. If you're still asking questions and willing to reconsider your assumptions when new data come in, that's flat out incompatible with stupidity. It's the polar opposite.

As a fanfiction writer and reader, it’s pretty much standard practice amongst fanfic writers to put in content warnings even if the list is short. It’s both to provide a trigger warning and to give a general idea of what the reader is getting into so they don’t waste their time if the themes present are things they don’t want to read. It really only takes a few minutes to come up with warnings, and I know as a reader I personally appreciate them. Besides, there’s always the option NOT to read the warnings if you don’t want “spoilers”.

@wormie1312I think you touched on something we don’t get at enough in our culture that is both oddly sex obsessed but not educational about the sex. Can a naive person really give fully informed consent? Because that’s what really matters. There are people who are more childlike than others. Either because they don’t understand sex fully or it could also be their way of existing. I’ll admit I’m a bit more childlike myself since I have adhd. That’s just probably always going to be my demeanor. I recall getting to the point where my state said I could consent to sex and having had a health class that essentially said don’t do it....but not knowing how sex worked still. So legally I could give consent. But I would’ve had no idea wtf was going on if I just agreed to it one day with some cute guy, and the older ones at my school were quite pushy tbh. Maybe both the law and our books should prod that subject a bit. What happens when you aren’t educated on sex and then put into sexual situations? Can you even really be considered consenting? I think the law needs to change. Not to condemn anyone necessarily, that’s not the focus, but to make sure it’s a priority that people understand what’s happening before they engage. Understand their rights of autonomy. And as a bonus I hope it’s normalized to discuss what someone needs after and what they expect from it because it shouldn’t still be a thing where men can have sex (I only single them out based on who reports doing this the most) with women on the premise of wanting something serious, only to dump them after because that’s changing their consent if they do it knowing the answer would be no more often if they were honest. Sex laws and ideas about sexual encounters just need a lot of revamping

I could rant about CWs and TWs ALL DAY. Just this week I got into another author argument about them. Whenever someone proudly says they won't do trigger warnings, I think, "Tell me you hate your readers without telling me you hate your readers."
I hate spoilers with a passion, but I care about giving TWs because I've triggered myself with my own writing before (a car accident in one of the books that I wrote before my brother died in one). Being accutely aware of how my writing has the potential to harm people, which I would never want to do, this is the system I use to give TWs without giving spoilers to people who don't want them. I'll use Gabriel's Album as an example.
*At the beginning of the book (set as a prologue so it should open to it automatically and not be skipped like the other front matter), it says:*
    Content warning
This book contains adult themes and is intended for a mature audience. If you wish to read the specific trigger warning for this book, please click here.
For a list of sensitive topics in this book, please click here. (In the physical book this says turn to page 383).
*That takes them to a page at the back of the book that says:*
Gabriel’s Album contains scenes of suicidal ideation. If this is triggering for you, please click this link for information about the chapter it’s contained in.
For a list of sensitive topics in this book, please click here.
To return to the beginning of the book, please click here.
*If they click, it takes them to a page that says:*
    Trigger warning - Part I
Gabriel’s Album contains scenes of suicidal ideation. If this is triggering for you, please click this link for information about the chapter it’s contained in.
For a list of sensitive topics in this book, please click here.
To return to the beginning of the book, please click here.
*The final part of the TW is a page that says:*
    Trigger warning - Part II
The scene of suicidal ideation is contained near the end of chapter 18. Stop reading at the line:
“We arrive at a luxury hotel in Seattle, I don’t know which one, and I don’t care.”
You can then either skip to chapter 19 or continue reading from the line:
“We travel to a restaurant in Seattle that Hayden tells us is amazing and we sit and talk after we order our food.”
There are further references to Gabriel’s previous mental state in chapter 19 when Sebastian takes him into another room to discuss recording the album.
At this point, Gabriel is in a better mental state, however, and no discussion about his specific suicidal ideation is contained in this chapter.
For a list of sensitive topics in this book, please click here.
To return to the beginning of the book, please click here.
*The list of sensitive topics says:*
    List of Sensitive Topics
Please find below a list of possible sensitive topics in this book:
Anxiety - Ariana suffers from anxiety throughout most of the book. She does seek treatment.
Depression - Gabriel suffers a very severe depression from chapter 15-19.
Misogyny - Sebastian is a misogynistic character by design as part of his character arc throughout the series.
Suicidal Ideation - Please see the trigger warning for this information.
To return to the beginning of the book, please click here.
    *****
I do this for all of my books. This way, only the people who have triggers will click through and receive the warning, then only those with that specific trigger will go on to read the actual warning. The list of sensitive topics is everything from book trigger warnings dot com that is in the book, but not in such a way that it's as emotional as the actual triggers. In some books I have things that are a trigger warning in another book that are only sensitive topics in one of my other books and vice versa.
TL;DR Authors who refuse to put TWs in their books because they're "spoilers" are actively ignoring the harm their writing can cause and the easy way they could give the TWs without giving spoilers to those who don't want them.

As someone who isn’t triggered by much but has friends who have had traumatic experiences, I’m the one who reads through stuff to make sure there’s nothing in there that could trigger them. Just yesterday I was reading a book and a sexual assault happened out of nowhere. My friends were very grateful for the warning. Make TWs/CWs NORMAL.

Someone will always abuse something(glad you’re past it and I hope you stay strong), but that doesn’t mean we stop it. Besides you could’ve easily read a book about ED as the main topic if you wanted to be triggered that bad so taking it out wouldn’t do anything but surprise someone trying to protect themselves and who isn’t looking for danger imo

The weird thing is this is NOT the first spicy door media I've read. Around a decade ago I came across scans from an erotic manga where several front doors along a street were represented by women embedded in them in different ways with their locks being...well, what you think they are. But this was a humorous manga as well! All the doors end up in weird situations like a thief trying to break in, someone getting their fingers stuck in a lock, etc. while their residents are gone and it's just total pandemonium.
Props to Vera Valentine for doing the research and getting the type of tree right, oaks were sacred to Zeus! He was perpetually horny too so fathering children with Dryads via an attractive wood knot tracks. I'd honestly like to read more of her Greek myth takes, I enjoy the idea of Zeus making amends to Hera by helping people get into long-term relationships since Hera holds dominion over marriage and family.
Oh, and if it's spelled "Dreas" like I'm thinking it's short for "Andreas" which is Greek for "manly and strong"

I actually stopped your review to go read this book cause I didn’t want spoilers. Of all the books I’ve watched you review/rant about, I picked this one. 🤣 Now I’m back and wow. There were door banging noises in the audiobook during the first intimate scene. 😭 Also what sounded like a door stopper spring…boinging aggressively, is the only way I can put it. Those were the only sound effects. 🤷🏾‍♀️ I wanted to curl up and die. 😭💀 But I would say this is better written than acotar. I wasn’t annoyed by the characters or the prose, I was too busy lmao/cringing at door puns.
You put words to how I was feeling about Drys. Side-note: he got the name from her watching a superhero movie with Idris Elba and thinking he’s hot. Which, I agree but also Dorian is right there!! Or Woodrow?🤣 Anyway, he is a sweetie but he’s also a bit infantilized. And sure he wants to clean and do her laundry and he picked up a job application unprompted but being nice and having a job is the bare minimum even if you used to be a door. Overall though, the book wasn’t bad. Thanks for another great review!
