It warms my heart to know people love and feel the same way about this world and characters. Thanks for dedicating a large portion of your life to studying it!! I must say… Please read the Wendy Darling series by Colleen Oakes. It’s by far my favourite retelling, very twisted but done in a not so obvious way. A very fun exploration of Neverland!! But I am not a scholar, so who knows whether you’ll enjoy or not! I certainly did as a classic fan of the movies (NOT Pan 2015) and the original book.

    I have found my people.
Pan retellings captivate my very being. Each character’s interpretation of Pan is so specific, so different, and so contrasted from what Pan represents in body and spirit… it all just blows my mind. Of course, my very faves are of Peter as the villain. He just fits that archetype so well.

Peter Pan is my all time favorite book, so I’m really glad that you decided to make this video! Lost Boy is one of my favorites last year (and I knew that book from one of your vids as well!) :-)

One incorrect thing in this video (I have not finished it yet but immediately noticed it) is that The Little White Bird is not about a father and a son; it is about a bachelor who wants a son, and so takes a child named David under his wings. The whole thing is based on Barrie's own relationship with George Llewelyn Davies and how much he wanted a son of his own, but couldn't have one for reasons we don't fully understand. Also, fairies do exist in The Little White Bird. The fairies are part of what makes the gardens magical, and give Peter the ability to fly after he loses it from realising he is not a bird.
Also, I recommend 'Fifty Years of Peter Pan' by Roger Lacelyn Green as a scholar piece. It is about the early stage origins, explaining changes made early on (the removal of the Kensington Gardens tableu etc). Sadly it is hard to find, as it is from 1954, and has not been reprinted often.

Honestly, knowing that there is basically just one iteration of the original Peter Pan novel makes it way easier for me to pick it up!
I think it would be really cool if you would make an update whenever you're read some more Peter Pan retelling and maybe some of your wishes on what adaption should or shouldn't do? I know you've mentioned that you weren't a fan of the ideas from Lost in the Never Woods. What did Lost Boy do better/different in that case?

Arthur Machen’s Great God Pan? Interesting. I know that one from his inspiring HP Lovecraft, but never really connected it to Barrie. Might be time for a reread, ‘cus all I really remember is this woman was experimented on and got pregnant from an interdimensional demon or something.
I love Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Every time a new movie or book tries to portray the “secret origin of Peter Pan” it ticks me off because Barrie already wrote one! Always thought there was enough connective tissue between the two canon Barrie books to flesh out into a full story, and eventually picked up (though I’ve still never read) a self-published book at a science fiction convention that claimed to do just that: Peter Pan Betwixt and Between by Peter Von Brown.
Another favorite is JV Hart’s Capt. Hook: The Adventures of a Notorious Youth. Hart wrote the Spielberg Hook movie, though sadly didn’t publish a sequel to his children’s novel of young Jas. Hook getting himself expelled from Eton, so the story was never completed.

Ohh btw Kate! Sorry this is really unrelated to this specific video, but it reminds me of you so much that I have to share lol. So I've always really liked your masters + literature content, but am really not into K-Pop so have kind of ignored that, and now we're at the start of a new semester and one of my ma lit courses put a BTS video clip on the syllabus which I just find really funny (as well as Stardew Valley! really curious what this is going to bring haha)
