When I was really young that movie, along with other movies that had like cowboys versus natives, made me think they were scary and backwards. The bit where they tried to make Wendy stay and do "women's work" also kinda stuck with me and it made me feel weird. I know now that those were stereotypes but growing up I didn't have very many positive experiences with Natives in media. The only one that was somewhat respectful was the Indian in the Cupboard movie. My paternal grandmother was Kiowa and Peter Pan was actually one of her favorite Disney movies. She loved watching the old cartoons of the 50s and 60s with a high level of tolerance and hoped that one day she would see a proper animation of Native Americans. Absolutely none of these things are racist. What, you want every single character in your movie to look, sound, and act like a white person? Besides, most of those characters weren't exactly the bad guys. Hell, aside from his own mother and Timothy, those crows were like the only characters who were ever nice to Dumbo. And as for Song of the South, two things:
    1. People who slam that movie are completely missing the point; which is that stories can be used as a means of helping people get through rough times. That's the reason why Uncle Remus is in such high spirits. Times are rough (to say the least), but he has those stories to help cheer him up and he feels good when he has an audience to tell them to.
    2. The actor who played Uncle Remus was the first black male actor to receive an Academy Award; which was for his work on that movie. So banning that movie is doing him and the black community a disservice.

No he’s not racist, but he’s a stereotypical character Disney wants to put! Btw if you’re dumbo isn’t racist (I know you didn’t mention it) but dumbo is highly racist for one reason and one reason only, actually 2! For the crows! Did you know that the person that who acts as the leader crow aka Jim Crow, IS WHITE?! Yes the crows were nice and friendly and honestly they were my favorites until I researched some shit and like they said, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s extremely offensive to black people including myself! I cry at that scene more than the baby mine scene. And remember the hammer and working song from dumbo? Well if you hear the lyrics “we work all day we work all night, we never learn to read it right we’re happy hearted roustabouts” and so on and so forth and ALL of the workers were African Americans! And the animals were there too, but still.....you’re gonna tell me that’s not racist?
My point is Walter Elias Disney wasn’t a bad person, but we was extremely racist and made a joke out of animal cruelty if you take a real close look at dumbo and it’s story. And also I read an article saying that uncle Remus is an Uncle Tom joke!

While I and my friends agree on some of these being stereotypical in a malignant sense (the Japanese portrayal in Commando Duck for example and the black centaur), we agree that these days people are aware, even kinda hyper aware, of these kinda things and as soon as something is seen as stereotypical it is automatically "Baaad". Let me give an example of a neutral stereotype: "Ach, laddie". I said that to someone I learned was from Scotland as a light joke, didn't mean anything bad with it, and he took mild offense. Not because it was offensive, but it was stereotypical. Now, in that case it was subjective as someone else I know simply rolled their eyes with a smile at silly foreigners and took no offense.
Thing is, there are charming and attractive aspects of different peoples and cultures that people like to make neutral stereotypes of, not to be racists or anything like that, but because they like them. Look at Star Wars the Clone Wars series. In it we have quite a few races depicted in various ways and speaking with different accents. Are these meant to be stereotypes because of that? The native speakers may or may not decide so as it is entirely subjective, but we all ought to know that they were never meant to be stereotypical in nature, but simply to add diversity to a big and populated galaxy. Or perhaps the Star Wars galaxy is one big stereotype of mankind herself.
I grew up on Disney film such as The Jungle Book and I never once bought into the whole racism thing surrounding the portrayal of King Louie and his gang. My thought, as a kid, was that because it took place in Africa (I later learned it was actually in India), it made sense they cast at least one who has roots there, or so I was taught anyway. Aside from that, King Louie is a beloved character for a reason, (him being funny and charming, like real apes, being key reasons) and his later depiction (largely unchanged) in Talespin as a close friend and "cousin" character to Baloo's seems to promote friendship and equality rather than anything else.
Want to talk stereotypes? Look at the Lion King. Rafiki is a stereotypical black native shaman, but that doesn't stop be from liking him nor does it make me think low of black people in any way. Mufasa was voice by James "Darth Vader" Earl Jones. His mighty voice for Mufasa can be seen as stereotypical since he's African-American but I am too in awe of it to care. Zazu is the stereotypical British Butler/Adjutant but British people I know don't give a hoo-haa about it. And is no one going to point out that an obviously white adjutant is serving a black guy in this film? That's a win for equality.
No, the fact that this is a very African themed movie makes pretty much all stereotypes, whether you perceive them to be neutral or bad, moot, no more than that, it makes everything fitting the theme instead.
Native Americans being depicted as red to me is because they were tribes people (I do not know whether they are tribes today or not so any Native Americans reading this, please forgive me if that was in error), living a simple yet at the same time tough life with nature. This meant spending a lot of time in the sun and thus getting a good sunburn. To me that is common sense, not racism. As for the song and such in the Peter Pan movie, I would teach my kids that these indians are singing only of themselves, as in the indians of Never Never Land. Real Indians, or rather the Native Americans, they'd have to look into themselves.
And don't you think there are stereotypes they have of white men or westerners right back? I chose to view such things are ridiculous or funny, I just get unhappy if I take offense and it wont make a difference if I do.
I live in Sweden, and within Scandinavia we have stereotypes and jokes about one another. Some might be a tad offensive in nature but I don't tell them kinds of jokes. But we are all aware of the jokes and we still can laugh with each other about it. I once worked in Norway and I was to receive a piece of paper containing some information I needed, but I received the one from the day before by mistake and I pointed this out and once I got the right one I said: "See, us Swedes are only half as stupid as you think we are ;)" and we all laughed at that.
So, my bottom line is this; do yourselves a favor and learn to see the difference between bad stereotypes and neutral stereotypes. And once you do, learn to take the neutral ones in stride, especially the ones not even directed at you. You are likely to live a slightly easier and happier life doing so.

They say those who forget past mistakes are liable to repeat them, after all. These clips could actually be really useful for history classes (particularly in America but also in many other countries) to provide examples of what the world used to be like and what we want to avoid ever happening again. Of course, they'd need a disclaimer and some background information for context, that goes without saying. We need to make it clear to the viewer that these clips are being presented specifically as a historical document and cautionary tale. King Louie and the Siamese cats while kinda bad guys aren't made out as bad because of the race they may depict, and even then their songs are great and the characters are considered good bad guys.
Whereas the Indians in Peter Pan, The asian cat in The Aristocats, and the Crows from Dumbo while again being stereotypical were good guys and were liked by both the characters in the movies and the fans of the movies. Not because they are stereotypes to make fun of but because they are seen as cool characters. Sure you can laugh at the stereotypes which could be seen as being a racist but like at the same time most kids still liked the characters innocently.

To me, the real issue is if its being done as mockery. The japanese scenes in cartoons in the 40s were done as racist mockeries of our wartime enemies. But I dont think king louie could be considered the same way. Yes there are unfortunate implications, but its not being done on the level of that mammy doll. I think that should be the main question when deciding to be offended by something, "what was the intent of this bit?" If its being done to insult or deride the group, then by all means, demand its removal. That chopstick piano playing cat for instance, that was clear and obvious mockery. The siamese cats in lady and the tramp? Not so much.

“In recognition of his portrayal of (Uncle Remus), (James Baskett) was given an Honorary Academy Award, making him the first black male performer to receive an Oscar. Despite his leading role, Baskett was not considered for a competitive Academy Award for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor.”
It’s a shame that Disney will not allow his performance to be seen because of their own mistakes. They should own up to it the way Warner Brothers does and release it with a disclaimer. They are erasing African American history in an attempt to hide their past racism.

Its actually really disturbing where the term "redskins" come from, although the warriors handprint is red, it actually comes from way back to when the Europeans came and conquered our land, their were bounties set up for any Native Americans who were causing a lot of trouble (obviously to fight back against the colonizers ways), they would send people out to kill who ever was wanted and had to bring back the scalp of that native in order to prove that he or she killed him/her, hence, thats where redskin came from.

As a Cherokee...I never found the Indians in Peter Pan racist...If I didn't stay indoors as often as I do, I turn beat red...And I mean long term. I used to work as a Landscaping and Irrigation handyman and during those years I was just as red as they were depicted...
Secondly, in the Aristocrats scene from the song Everybody Wants to be a Cat, the Asian cat even says he is gonna play Chopsticks (the piano music) with Chopsticks (eating utensils) and comes up with that rhyme on the fly as most of the lyrics are "Improvisations" (From the movies perspective). The kids get in on it, the adults, they all take turns just adding lyrics...the horse, the goose grandpa...
Let's be real people...If you want to find something offensive you can go out of your way to find it. Sure some of these were rough, but it was a different time and while they aren't acceptable to replicate these days, these movies are classics and don't need censorship...Adults and Kids can look at Jim Crow and be like "That shit is racist..." And enjoy the rest of the movie, Hell even enjoy the character as he is a pretty likable one.
