The singer said he wrote the song about a time when he lived in Australia, in an apartment, and he lived on the bad side of town, and he lived next to drug dealers, and sometimes other drug dealers would get his apartment mixed with the actual drug dealers next door…he said that so many people would knock at his door, and it unnerved him to the point he never wanted to answer the door. He was terrified. So basically the song is about being paranoid.
R.I.P. Greg Ham, who played sax on this song, flute on "Down Under," and wrote some of my favorite lesser-known Men At Work songs like "Giving Up" and "The Longest Night."
Yes! So happy someone else wanted to bring up Greg Ham. Such an unappreciated musician-- who left us way too soon. What could we have experienced from him if he stayed with us just a little bit longer???
So sad to find out about Greg Ham passing. Also, I recently found out about the passing of another sax player, Benjamin Bossi from Romeo Void. 😢😢May both RIP 🙏😢
Another great pick. Their sound was so distinctive even for the '80s. Suggestion for Female Friday: Norah Jones "Don't Know Why". I'm sure you'll love it. Her voice is pure magic.
This and "Down Under" put Australia on the international scene in the early 80s (several years before Crocodile Dundee). For your next MaW song, I recommend "Overkill". They also had great songs like "It's a Mistake", "Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive", and "Be Good Johnny". Colin Hay's voice is still amazing! P.S. This is video #699... everyone tune in tomorrow for #700 on Female Friday!
You did say on the unboxing video that you wanted to do more Aussie music, so well done! Please do "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House and "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil. Both are Aussie bands that have been around for decades.
"It's a Mistake" is my favourite one by them. It's like a reggae sound with a deep message, with their trademark fun vibe. For 80s sax though, I need to request once more "NEVER SAY NEVER" by ROMEO VOID

Overkill is their best by a million miles. This one is still great and was a staple on early MTV. Men at Work was really really good for a few years. "It's a Mistake" is a great anti-war song.
Colin the lead singer, has a great voice, I WATCHED HIM ON A SHOW ON T.V. SCRUBS, WHERE HE FOLLOWS AROUND THE STAR OF THE SHOW SINGING WITH JUST A GUITAR AND HIS VOICE AND HE WAS AWESOME!!!!
I remember seeing that in reruns, and It kinda sounded familiar - it took a while before I realized who it was and the song, awesome acoustic version! I got to see him do the song live several years ago when he toured with Ringos All Star Band.
Pretty sure the guy in the song is crazy recluse. He says: "I've done no harm, I keep to myself. There's nothing wrong with my state of mental health" and asks: "Is it the man come to take me away? Why do they follow me? It's not the future that I can see. It's just my fantasy." He's clearly off his rocker.
By far my favorite Men At Work song is Overkill. Both the studio version and an acoustic version released years later are both very good. And the meaning of the song, at least for me, is about learn to let go of things out of your control. I'm sure for others it has different meanings. Plus Colin Hay's vocal on that song is exceptional.
Men At Work are an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1978 & best known for breakthrough hits such as "Who Can It Be Now?" & "Down Under". They had some other songs such as "Be Good Johnny", "Overkill", "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive", "It's A Mistake", "Everything I Need", "Maria", "The Longest Night". Men At Work performed "Down Under" at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, alongside Paul Hogan of "Crocodile" Dundee.
YES… “OVERKILL”❤️ and “Down Under”… “It’s a mistake” as well.. Colin Hay and Men at work are a fantastic band that crept in and took their own unique place in music history. I feel blessed to be exposed to so much music pre 2010 when out of nowhere melody and uniqueness was pushed away for monotone sounds and (most) every artist sounding the same. This song is about paranoid schizophrenia.. Brilliant writing hidden in a unique melody. Keep ‘em coming🙂🙂🙂
Loved your reaction. Have to say that I found it hilarious that you were reacting to a song that is basically about a guy that is wanting to be left alone and you were wearing a shirt that says antisocial. LOL
Men at Work hit the scene hard when they came out with their first album, they were on every radio station 24\7. These boys were amazing, great Aussie sound !!
My husband and I saw Men at Work and INXS was there backup band. This was in 1983 near Chicago. I had never heard of INXS. I loved Men at Work but INXS was really a good band. I had to go out and buy the album at the time. So I had both their albums. INXS became very popular in the few years to follow but I really never heard much of Men at Work after that. We really enjoyed the concert though. Both great bands from Australia!
Just watched Pentatonic "Little Drummer Boy" - show cases ever member and brought tears of joy to my eyes and ears!! You would love it. Also the song "Sing" was written by them and terrific! Loved it immensely!!
I said it before and I'll mention it again - "I Can See it in Your Eyes" is one of my fave Men at Work tunes. Just a sad, beautiful song. Worth checking out.
This is one of my favorite Men at Work songs! To me this song has always been about a guy who is kind of a recluse and a little mentally disturbed! I have this album and the whole thing is great!❤️❤️
For more Men at Work songs with a story you can't go past 'Overkill', ''Be Good Johnny', 'It's a Mistake' and 'Dr Heckyll and Mr Jive'. Also good to see you dipping your toe into Oz music. There is a huge catalogue of great bands and great songs that US and UK have no idea about.
A great early 80s flashback...Fun song, thanks guys, From a little tree hut in the middle of the bush sitting outside at night, it took about half and hour to write the song. It just popped in his head...Peace
The song that made the biggest impact on me before I reached my teenage years was Blue Velvet by Bobby Vinton, felt like a person could just wrap it around themselves like a warm blanket.
Since you both like songs with sax solo's, I strongly recommend David A. Stewart - Lily Was Here ft. Candy Dulfer. No lyrics, but holy molly! that sax is speaking a thousand words!
Excellent suggestion, love that one. I'm like Amber, drawn to songs featuring the sax. If she enjoys instrumentals as well as vocals, she REALLY needs to look into anything by one of the best sax players ever, the late, great Boots Randolph. He was the GOAT in my opinion. One of his greatest hits ,"Yakety Sax" is so catchy and upbeat, but he had SO many hits it's impossible to pick a favorite. From upbeat, to slow and romantic and everything in between, there's no one better than Boots !
It's time to get back to Chicago and if you want to hear the horns "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" and make sure it is the 14 minute Tanglewood version. There are 3 sections that are instrumentals. That means the horns are showcased.
"Overkill" I'd have to say is my favorite song by them. This song and "It's a Mistake" run a close 2nd place. Too me this song doesn't have a message or tell a story so much. It's just a good Jam song.
If many of you are unfamiliar with Aussie bands I'd like to introduce you to one '60's band and two great '80's bands and their songs: 1) The Easybeats - Friday On My Mind (Great rocker from '66. I believe some members went on to form the band AC/DC). 2) Icehouse - 1) Icehouse 2) Electric Blue 3) My Obsession 4) Heartbreak Kid 5) Man Of Colours 6) Crazy. (The songs 2 to 6 are from their 'Man Of Colours' LP/CD). 3) Mr. Mister - 1) Kyrie 2) Hunters Of The Night 3) Broken Wings 4) Is It Love ( There's a great live version of the song 'Is It Love - 12/14/1985 - Ritz').

The saxomophone in this song reminded me of a great female Friday candidate - Quarterflash. The lead singer is Rindy Ross and she also plays sax. "Harden My Heart" is a rocker!
This is one of the greatest songs of the 80's! It's not hard to understand at all. The lyrics are very clear and concise and the song is clever and well written. One of my favorites from this era of musuc.
Being an 80's chick, I'll never forget how fun Men at Work videos were! MTV truly WAS once music videos ONLY... it was bliss! I miss those days! I'd trade a smart phone for my MTV any day!✌
Grew up in Australia in early 80s, listening to bands like men at work, inxs, midnight oil, and many more. I saw Colin hay at Manchester appollo here in UK a few years ago.🇭🇲🇬🇧 I still listen to a lot of oz/nz tunes from that time, a lot of good memories, 👍 😊🇭🇲
"It's A Mistake" "Overkill" "Be Good Johnny" are other hits from them. Out of these three, please react to "Overkill" It's good. Thanks! Two requests: Peter Schilling--Major Tom, and The Different Story. Icehouse--Electric Blue has longer saxophone notes in it.
The 80's pop music will always be my favorite my whole life. I was 9 years old when MTV came on for the 1st time. The world has never been the same since.

Another great Aussie band: The Easybeats from the 60s. With lead singer Steven Wright, not the deadpan comic though he is a funny dancer in the video Friday on My Mind. Very Beatlesque.
Please watch Morgan James, featured with Postmodern Jukebox covering "Dream On" by Steven Tyler and Aerosmith, and then watch The Warning, a sisters' power trio that is taking the Net by storm doing their songs "Choke" and "Evolve". It would be a fantastic Female Friday! (My other favorite reactors finally had time to do Morgan James on this song and loved it - hint hint hint).
Morgan James on Dream On is one of my three favorite covers of all time… the other two being Pentatonix’s Hallelujah and Disturbed’s The Sound of Silence
I agree with both suggestions, but for The Warning I would recommend Dust to Dust (ua-cam.com/video/Jb7Hi0X16DU/v-deo.html) or Survive (ua-cam.com/video/E62SVvLw9FI/v-deo.html), only because they have a better chance of not being blocked.
The Ms.here...My husband loves this song...He's usually into the harder eighties sound..We both love this band...And ..Yes the sax is boss here..! Love Your Reaction!!
Men At Work were huge at a time where there was a tidal wave of great artists in Australia. Most of them never saw success outside of Australia and New Zealand, but you guys are doing a great job by shedding a bit of well deserved light on a few of them. My favourite song from Men At Work is one that hardly anyone would recall, which is "Down By The Sea". It's a great "chill" song.
I've always loved Colin Hay's voice, very under-rated. You guys should react to this video, he's doing their song "Overkill" solo. A more recent video. ua-cam.com/video/quzZaJI4b1A/v-deo.html
"Down Under" will hit you as the fun quirky song, but "Who Can It Be Now" is honestly the one with staying power. If you spin it a couple of times, you will grow to love it, especially if the audio quality is better than in that video.
Two songs by singers most people never heard of, but they are truly great ... Clairy Browne, Love Letter and Jill Barber, I'll never quit loving you. I would love for you to react to those. I know you would love them!!
Gotta disagree I’ve been to thousands of concerts and Lead Singer Colin Hay had the best storytelling show I’ve ever seen! He is one of the greatest singer songwriters ever. “overkill” solo acoustic is amazing and also there’s a band version. Story of my life
To put it into context J. When the band was new& poor they shared an apartment. They didn't always have rent or pay all bills. So they would be avoiding landlords& bill collectors. Yes this is when they would come door to door!( Damn telling my age! Ha).
I Just Don't Think I'll Get Over You. ~Colin Hay Lead singer in the band. One of the most lovely sad love songs I have ever heard. sheer beauty of poetry and music.
Men at Work are so unique. I can’t say I can think of any other group that sounds like them. That’s one of the things I really like about them.

Another great Aussie band: The Easybeats from the 60s. With lead singer Steven Wright, not the deadpan comic though he is a funny dancer in the video Friday on My Mind. Very Beatlesque.
still so good after all these years and you're right, the sax makes the song
You really need a U2 song. Start with Pride (in the name of love). U will love it and love the message in the lyrics
U2 blocks most of the reactions on YT so it's hard to do for anybody.
Such an icon song from the 80's. Men at Work did great work!
Greg Ham on sax in this song plays the flute in Down Under. He also plays organ, piano, and synthesizer.
You guys would definitely like their song Down By The Sea. Keep it up y'all!
Omg i love that one! Not many people mentions it haha
Collin was a guest in one of the episodes of Scrubs.... I grew up with this great Aussie band. Brings back memories.
He's paranoid. That's how simple it is. Just have fun with it.
The Ms.here...My husband loves this song...He's usually into the harder eighties sound..We both love this band...And ..Yes the sax is boss here..! Love Your Reaction!!
If there’s a humorous side to paranoia this is it!
Female Friday and sax. Quarterflash harden my heart
Superb Aussie Band...don't over think the lyrics too much..lol.. Very creative 80's music. Love it.
I've always loved Colin Hay's voice, very under-rated. You guys should react to this video, he's doing their song "Overkill" solo. A more recent video. ua-cam.com/video/quzZaJI4b1A/v-deo.html
He is a Scotsman (Scottish accented)
@@jimmayors2315 Yes, I know.
Thx so much for sharing this. It was lovely!
The version from TV show "Scrubs" is pretty cool. ua-cam.com/video/jrGmcuj44DQ/v-deo.html
I also love the way the sax and vocals do the call and answer in the chorus.
Story of my life
I adore Men At Work! One of thee most underrated bands of the 80s! Listen to "Overkill", amazing song and sound💖
It’s paranoia and Agraphobia.
I love Amber's hair style here. Yes, Men At Work have a very unique sound.
Your next Men at work song should be “it’s a mistake”
Definitely - with the official video.
also "Be Good Johnny"
"Be Good Johnny" is a really great Men at Work tune. Take it from me....Colin's namesake :)))
To put it into context J. When the band was new& poor they shared an apartment. They didn't always have rent or pay all bills. So they would be avoiding landlords& bill collectors. Yes this is when they would come door to door!( Damn telling my age! Ha).
I remember watching this video on MTV a million times. (yes for all you kids out there A MILLION TIMES)
Overkill! You've got to hear this Men At Work gem!!!
I Just Don't Think I'll Get Over You.
~Colin Hay
Lead singer in the band.
One of the most lovely sad love songs I have ever heard.
sheer beauty of poetry and music.
If you want the joy of sax in the 80's, Quarterflash`s "Find Another Fool" or "Harden My Heart ".
Definitely one of their better jams, I think we all ask this same question!!!
