Just received my new generator today, got it all set up and ready to go for the next blackout. Great price and it started right up no problems. Delivery was nice and quick, they even put it in the garage.
I bought my first Travel Trailer in 1978 and have been in the RV business over 40 years. I believe the best way to carry something on the back of a trailer is to take the bumper off and extend the frame out enough to carry whatever you want and then reinstall the bumper. I have carried full size motorcycles on the back of trailers doing this. I added from 80 to 160 pounds of concrete on the tongue under the battery/batteries. When you add hitches, you add torque which could make the bumper fail because it can be easily overloaded.
Thanks for your ideas!! I don't know what you're talking about regarding the concrete in front. I guess you're just making a comparison as to the advantages of extending the frame?
I bought a used Heartland North Trail 22 FSB that came with a factory pull out extension bumper/carrier that is stout. It is one of the reasons I bought this particular RV. It is a nice feature and I don't understand why more RV's don't have them. I see many units on the road that have flimsy carriers rigged up. I like that you are doing it right. Nice video. Thanks.
I would also add some LED tail lights to the back of the shelf. With a center brake light. Also add white LED fog lights underneath for additional back up lights.
I'm not sure about adding a bunch of electronics. I'll definitely change the tail lights on the RV to ones that we had previously on our old RV which we liked. But the fact that the Shelf only stands out to foot really doesn't blocker interfere with the lights. That's why I placed the boxes inboard on the Shelf. I don't need any additional backup lights either as of right now. Every situation that I've ever come into backing up has been pretty easy to do by the brake lights at night and it doesn't interfere with other campers. If I'm out somewhere and I'm trying to back into a spot or negotiate around a gas station or something the backup camera with its infrared night vision light everything up quite well back there. Plus I always have my wife get out with the two way radio when we get into tight situations. Definitely not going to do center brake light. I don't want anybody to think they're coming up behind an automotive type vehicle of some kind. Thing is some of the states like I believe Indiana half stipulations that if you have a light on your vehicle it has to work if it fails then you could get cited. I know that's the way it is with Truckers. If I added lights to the trailer anywhere I would think that the best place to put them would be over the axle shining down on the tires so that when negotiating turns in the dark you could see exactly where your tires and wheels are in comparison to curbs and potentially holes.
Just looked at 6 by 6 500k rig. If u need the tray bolt on to go off road, I would take a 3/8 bike threaded cable & weave it in & out the side bracket holes & then hve the turn buckle to the ladder catch & lift both ends of threaded cable so the whole unit is diagonally lifted & supported together w/ no flex of any kind not even 1/4" + wt carrying would go from 550 lbs-650 or so to 700 lbs just turn buckle & 1K lbs if u weave the threaded cable & then diagonally lift the whole system. Nothing permanent All bolt on or off or change to fit needs.
My wife is going to hunt you down if you don't stop showing all these RV updates. She said I have expensive toys. The last time I got involved with your updates, I bought a ProPride 3P hitch system. After watching your install video multiple times, I was on the road. I like the idea of this add on also. Seriously though, the ProPride was the BEST purchase I have ever made for towing. The mark of a great company is a lot of times in how well they package their products! If I had a class c or a travel trailer/5th wheel I’d definitely be buying one of these but without a bunch of fabricating I don’t think it would fit our class A
Excellent. I was going to have my local welder make me a bumper. Makes no sense to get thousands of dollars of fiberglass damage if you accidentally back into a shrubbery at the back of a camp site.

Is there a quick & easy way to take the whole tray off, nice n fast with some quick release system? I know it folds up nice and easy. It would be really great if it was entirely removable fast like the hitch mount ones are. Thank you
The problem with the hitch mounted ones that remove easy and pretty much any of them that are quick release is a few things, 1 - these things are heavy so you're going to have to have a couple of people to remove them even if it was set up that way. 2 - when you make something only have a few points of support to allow it to release quickly it will inherently have movement and with that extra movement you will get weakness and breakage and at the bare minimum rattling noise.3 - security becomes an issue, for example with a hitch receiver lock pin it only takes a pry bar or a hammer and now your entire rack and whatever is bolted to it stolen easily. We had a folding cargo tray on the back of our fifth wheel, we didn't find many situations that we needed to fold up and remove everything that was on the back. What I mean is, if you have a 30-foot RV adding this rack that is far superior for support and security is only going to add a couple of feet. So in reality what is the difference towing a 30 ft box that has a small 2 ft shelf on the back versus just towing a 30 ft box. Well, traveling on the road for 3 years full time, I can tell you there really isn't any. What this system is designed to do is Mount securely on the back of an RV to give you the peace of mind that it's not going to fall off, it's not going to fail, it's not going to be stolen, and the items on the back are going to be able to be stored safely and utilized as needed. So I guess my question is why do you need it to come off? And why would that need not be met by something that folds up and out of the way?

Those trays are extremely heavy duty. And that's not even the heaviest carrying capability one they have. They have one that has four arms to one tray. I don't think you could put a big enough generator on that to cause an issue of supporting it

I have a separate video that's being put together on how I fabricated the generator box. I've talked about him in previous videos and included links for the Box themselves however I want to make sure that I get the ventilation correct so I can finish shooting the series and you guys can see how you can build a generator box yourself

There's really no reason to do any more work as all the engineering has been built in to the support system. You can add extra support to each tray but I don't need it for the weight that I'm putting back there. Plus each additional support adds more weight to your rig. And as far as that ladder oh, the only thing that is good for is maybe mounting a flagpole and cautiously climbing up and down it as it was designed for. Do not mount or use your ladder for cargo. It is not designed or made for that at all.
Well Mike, You've done another excellent addition to your rig.. You should open a traveling RV repair and Upgrade shop while on the road.. I'm sure other folks would like to have a heavy duty bumper like that but are probable to afraid to tackle the project.. My friend who purchased the used Terry camper last year would be a good example.
Yeah everybody has a welder laying around vs wrenches and a drill. Let's see how many people burn down their RVs because they don't know how to use a welder

I would like to put a bumper mount with the same set up as you. On my class A RV I do have a genny built in but I don't want to run it all the time. Im gonna need to run the AC during our East Coast to philly from Vegas (this will be on our channel). Running the ac upfront on the dash is not only a waist but will burn more gas and put a strain on the engine. So, doing it this way with the Honda would be more efficient and cost effective. Just need to see how you did those boxes. Thanks again.
Only reason I don't like that version over the built i receiver? All you have to do to get all your stuff (regardless of your locking boxes) is have a couple open end wrenches. Dismount the whole bumper and boogy.
You realize that a receiver only uses 1 hitch pin. Most of them can have a pipe slip over the stub that is sticking out in snapped off cleanly in seconds. Or I'll take my battery powered Sawzall and cut it off in 30 seconds and slide out whatever you have in the receiver. You can't get to all of my bumper mounting bolts without removing the underside of the RV. All I have to do is put 5 tack welds on 5 bolts and nothing will come off without a grinder or cut off wheel. The problem with the receiver is it has one mounting point. So there's all kinds of movement that needs to be addressed. And the majority of the built-in receivers are actually bolt-on receivers so they too could be unbolted if needed be. I've always said, if somebody wants something bad enough they'll get it regardless.
Each tray has two steel brackets that support it if you want you can actually option in four brackets per tray. But that amount of weight it's going to be carried necessarily on the back of a travel trailer as the tongue weight would be minimized to the point of being unsafe.
That's funny, I can use that same 4 inch cordless grinder and steal your entire RV in 30 seconds. Plus I'm not sure who's carrying that bumper and Generator and trays all together. LOL
Why not get a custom hitch welded on the back? They can custom fit a hitch to the height you need and it will cost less than weak Aluminum. Did the company hire a former Lego toy employee to design this?
Welding the metal compromises the metal. A hitch has a single connection point this one has multiple points over a larger area. I don't know how many people I see caring 2 in cargo trays on their frame-mounted hitch that just wobble constantly back and forth. This one doesn't move. It is locked on solid.
over time what starts out level bolt on tray system could start to bend & sag w/ father time under load. The side turn connected to ladder won't get the chance to sag or bend.
I suggest that maybe you take a look at the website for the company that makes these mounting systems. All the engineering has been done. As long as you do not exceed the weight that they are rated at they will last indefinitely. And they will stay level.
I made it. Nobody had any that I really care for. I'm in the process of finishing it up and redesigning it for a little bit better ventilation. I'll have a video on it, eventually. LOL
WoW whole bumper is a tray. & to look at that u would say welder could should hve to build it but bc it is designed just so in Cad the whole thing bolts just so under max wt. Ideally as margin of safety, worst case scenario if u went off roading or hit big pot whole u would go from safe wt to over limit just for a short strike. As a extra margin of safety when ever u r in spot they could still spot weld few more spots at key pnts back to frame. Normal load, normal driving & no pot holes or off roading hard tips its 10yr product no fuss no worries except ck & tighten the bolts.
Most ppl know about the way trailers r made, & can tell the bumper from factory r mostly decoration/after thought. If mounting anything u need to b unto the frame welded, bolted or both not to tow just 2 hve some beef to hold any wt.

As we mentioned in the previous video we're not focusing on "camping" we're staying focused on full timing. We do have our trip coming up to Myrtle Beach within the next week and we will be at the Hershey RV show. But we are using our time at the house trying to get our house sold and cleaned out.

What brand is that canopy? It looks like it is decent quality. We used to have one of the first up 10x10s but it broke a few years ago. All of the ones we buy now, we can't seem to get anymore than 2 years out of.

Not with my stuff. It's bolted down and locked up. By the way, what stop lights are you at that people are taking stuff off your vehicle? Sounds like a city problem
@@Rvdaydream I don't have this problem, but others have. The only thing I put on the back of mine is a scooter and I lock it and the rack to the motor home.
Not that I'm aware of. And for pretty good reason. That ladder is only held in with for small rivets. It really doesn't have the strength to have constant weight on it. But I have seen people use their ladders for kayaks and bicycles I'm not sure how strong it is but they're doing it
@@foreverfixin just remember that whenever you're climbing up your ladder you're supporting your weight over a larger area in three to four different points at the same time. You're also holding on to the lightweight aluminum tubing with soft hands and soft feet compared to hard metal being clamped in two small points of contact like a tray would have. Also realize that even though the generator does not weigh anything close to a an adult human it does vibrate and bounce which will apply more Force on those two aluminum mounting points then what the true weight of the generator is. I'm not saying it can't be done but it needs to be over-engineered to accomplish longevity
@@Rvdaydream this van was built in 1982 I believe this latter is a little bit well-made than what you would get nowadays there will be four points of contact there are four points of contact holding it to the van I have been in construction all my life there is no doubt in my mind that I can build a wood tray that will hold my 2000 watt generator off this ladder
Mike, nice video. I have a Champion Dual Fuel 3400 generator. And was looking to carry on the back of the RV. would you recommend the HiLoHitch and purchase a separate cargo tray or the tray - and if so. Would a single be sufficient or a double.
Definitely call the manufacturer and speak to Ralph about your specific requirements. I thought I needed to go overboard and have more than what I currently do but obviously they know more about their system than me and he got me exactly what I needed to carry the weight that I have which luckily was far less than what I thought initially. I can mount it back on the hitch receiver that bolts to the bumper but I never liked it back there in the first place. I could mount it underneath which I talked about in one of the videos but I didn't like the way that looked either. For right now we just have it thrown in the back of the truck.
Living for the last 44 years in Northeast Ohio right in the middle of the Rust Belt it was a concern. No issues though it looks really really good still.
Don't be... It would take two people and a whole lot of noisy trailer shaking to unbolt... And even then I don't think 2 people could carry it very easily... And they would definitely have to have a truck... 90 percent of the people we run into don't even know what's inside anyways... I would be(and I am) more worried about theft inside the RV when I'm away.. Unless you turn a Brinks truck into a Campervan.... Theft can "potentially" happen..

The worst place to add weight is at the back of the trailer. Reason is sway. You never mentioned sway once.
Yeah we dont have a sway issue with our Propride Hitch!

My original bumper is 9 years old and it's brand new cause the previous owner only used it one summer and I got a totally new Travel trailer.

Most likely, but do you really think that the warranties are that great in the first place? Even if it was it's only a two year warranty.

3trays wide I hope there is a cross member that makes all 3 trays act as 1 tray, that way if 1 side came lose or bent then other 2 bolts would hold.

Why not get a custom hitch welded on the back? They can custom fit a hitch to the height you need and it will cost less than weak Aluminum. Did the company hire a former Lego toy employee to design this?
Welding the metal compromises the metal. A hitch has a single connection point this one has multiple points over a larger area. I don't know how many people I see caring 2 in cargo trays on their frame-mounted hitch that just wobble constantly back and forth. This one doesn't move. It is locked on solid.
over time what starts out level bolt on tray system could start to bend & sag w/ father time under load. The side turn connected to ladder won't get the chance to sag or bend.
I suggest that maybe you take a look at the website for the company that makes these mounting systems. All the engineering has been done. As long as you do not exceed the weight that they are rated at they will last indefinitely. And they will stay level.

WoW whole bumper is a tray. & to look at that u would say welder could should hve to build it but bc it is designed just so in Cad the whole thing bolts just so under max wt. Ideally as margin of safety, worst case scenario if u went off roading or hit big pot whole u would go from safe wt to over limit just for a short strike. As a extra margin of safety when ever u r in spot they could still spot weld few more spots at key pnts back to frame. Normal load, normal driving & no pot holes or off roading hard tips its 10yr product no fuss no worries except ck & tighten the bolts.

Most ppl know about the way trailers r made, & can tell the bumper from factory r mostly decoration/after thought. If mounting anything u need to b unto the frame welded, bolted or both not to tow just 2 hve some beef to hold any wt.

As we mentioned in the previous video we're not focusing on "camping" we're staying focused on full timing. We do have our trip coming up to Myrtle Beach within the next week and we will be at the Hershey RV show. But we are using our time at the house trying to get our house sold and cleaned out.
Call Me crazy but if my rig/bumper/trays, A 10 yrs safe if bolts tight just became 20yrs life of rig/trailer durable. Just Me, God belting & suspenders deal.

What brand is that canopy? It looks like it is decent quality. We used to have one of the first up 10x10s but it broke a few years ago. All of the ones we buy now, we can't seem to get anymore than 2 years out of.

Not with my stuff. It's bolted down and locked up. By the way, what stop lights are you at that people are taking stuff off your vehicle? Sounds like a city problem

Not that I'm aware of. And for pretty good reason. That ladder is only held in with for small rivets. It really doesn't have the strength to have constant weight on it. But I have seen people use their ladders for kayaks and bicycles I'm not sure how strong it is but they're doing it

@@foreverfixin just remember that whenever you're climbing up your ladder you're supporting your weight over a larger area in three to four different points at the same time. You're also holding on to the lightweight aluminum tubing with soft hands and soft feet compared to hard metal being clamped in two small points of contact like a tray would have. Also realize that even though the generator does not weigh anything close to a an adult human it does vibrate and bounce which will apply more Force on those two aluminum mounting points then what the true weight of the generator is. I'm not saying it can't be done but it needs to be over-engineered to accomplish longevity
@@Rvdaydream this van was built in 1982 I believe this latter is a little bit well-made than what you would get nowadays there will be four points of contact there are four points of contact holding it to the van I have been in construction all my life there is no doubt in my mind that I can build a wood tray that will hold my 2000 watt generator off this ladder
Mike, nice video. I have a Champion Dual Fuel 3400 generator. And was looking to carry on the back of the RV. would you recommend the HiLoHitch and purchase a separate cargo tray or the tray - and if so. Would a single be sufficient or a double.
Definitely call the manufacturer and speak to Ralph about your specific requirements. I thought I needed to go overboard and have more than what I currently do but obviously they know more about their system than me and he got me exactly what I needed to carry the weight that I have which luckily was far less than what I thought initially. Spare tire?
I can mount it back on the hitch receiver that bolts to the bumper but I never liked it back there in the first place. I could mount it underneath which I talked about in one of the videos but I didn't like the way that looked either. For right now we just have it thrown in the back of the truck.
Rust may haunt you as dissimilar metals conduct and corrode. Electrolysis. Alum and steel no bueno. Good video though!!!
Living for the last 44 years in Northeast Ohio right in the middle of the Rust Belt it was a concern. No issues though it looks really really good still.

Just worried about theft.
Don't be... It would take two people and a whole lot of noisy trailer shaking to unbolt... And even then I don't think 2 people could carry it very easily... And they would definitely have to have a truck... 90 percent of the people we run into don't even know what's inside anyways... I would be(and I am) more worried about theft inside the RV when I'm away.. Unless you turn a Brinks truck into a Campervan.... Theft can "potentially" happen..
