in the TV series they did not use 1970 Chargers. my information comes from the Confederate General Lee Fan Club, in the movies, they did, but the show, they used 68's & 69's.
Same here! Back in the day as a child/teen, I thought it was so cool. As an adult, I'm like, Ohhhh man!, so many of those beautiful cars got wasted. No wonder they are so damn RARE today.
the complete budget for each car from purchase to modification was $1600 each. At $300 per that was a total $480,000. Still, today we see it as blasphemy to have destroyed all of those wonderful Chargers.
One of the best action films of all time?!!!!!!! Are you kidding me?! That 2005 Dukes of Hazard movie was an absolute catastrophy in all respects. Should never have been made.
68-70 Chargers are always going to be abused by the film industry (wait until they re-make Bullitt). Its time for someone to build a fiberglass 68-70 Charger body on a generic frame and jump that instead of actual vehicles.
Malicious SRT The TV show actually did the charger a favour by making the 68-70 charger one of the most desirable cars to restore. There are hundreds of GL replica chargers around the world and almost no cars still in scrapyards. were it not for the TV shows then most of these would have rusted away and certainly would not have the same Kudos or cult status. This demand for chargers and the love and devotion for this car has also ensured spare parts are easily and readily available , you cant say the same for many other models of muscle car.
I completely understand how people are upset about the wrecked chargers, but, The Dukes of Hazzard made the car popular. If it wasn't for the Dukes show most 69 chargers would've been destroyed in demo derbies.
VERY TRUE.....the 300 or 400 destroyed already when have been scrap for sure along with hundreds of others if. film and tv hadnt made them popular. More are probably on the road than would have been. Just dont tell everyone about the Fast and Furious film. They are destroying a few chargers as well....opppps...lol
Racer X , if they could do decent scripts without the easily offended people crying cause it’s not politically correct- AND leave the damned flag on the roof!!! It in that context (very important, but not understood concept) it is about rebelliousness NOT racism, although to be fair, outside of that, I do also see it as a continuing symbol to many of the south’s racist history. But the show is about two good ol boys trying to do right but sometimes the wrong way?
I concur! My '69 was lime green with lime green interior when I purchased it and I left it (on the outside) exactly as purchased. Did do some modifications to the inside and engine. Never had any desire to paint it orange and received numerous positive complements in reference to keeping it original.
The 2005 movie was GREAT. The driving sequences were amazing. Having the suped-up General make its debut to 'Mississippi Queen' was awesome. Having the boys haul ass around Atlanta to AC/DC tracks was sick. And then Jessica simpson struts around in bikini and heels. WICKED
I cant even watch movies like this, I cant get over the fact that so many awesome cars are destroyed for a movie. Some day I plan to restore a car and to see them being completely destroyed... hurts. Its not like theres an endless supply
Nah dude, that design of firebird isn't that desirable. I do, however, understand your point. I think people will go on and do what they want because it was apart of their life and it was a fun time. There will be muscle cars turned into what was hardly seen on the streets, but found on the big screen across the globe. Like the General Lee, Smokey and The Bandit Trans Am, Starsky and Hutch Torino, and maybe a '70 Chevelle SS 454 LS6. It's just a passion that only goes to the desirable stuff, not so much for that particular car.
+neal6473 I can't speak for others, but the whole talking car back then was great and I watched it regularily as a kid...Today it just looks cheezy to me now... The General Lee however had none of that on it...Just a plain ole car painted up really cool.... Nothing cheezy about the General Lee.....
The producers of this show only used the Charger because the car was a sexy muscle car, that was affordable, because it was ten years old, but wasnt worthless, as anyone who has ever read car magasines, or attended car show will attest. May i add I have been going to junk yards since the 80's, and I have never ever seen this style year charger in scrapyard. What always has happened with ALL late 60's muscle cars, is they get put aside, and sold to junkyard staff or muscle fans within 24 hrs.
I own movie general #51. It did the driven jump at the end of the movie by stuntman Mark Hager. This was number 15, it was wrecked testing out the ramp for my car. The car hit the ground and did a barrel roll. it would be very cool to have this car next to my other one.
I need to figure out what kind of Chassis reinforcement they did to make those cars survive that, the exterior looks bad but the car seemed pretty straight underneath.
I live in a community of 1 million people , and there is only 1 general lee charger i have ever seen. I guarantee if it wasnt painted orange, it would have been restored by a mopar fan to something more stylish. I have been reading Hot Rod and Car Craft since the 70's , and Chargers, Chevelles, Camaros etc have always been popular, and the "cool" car to own and drive. Muscle cars with big engines were at their lowest appeal during 1973-74 ,during fuel the fuel crisis.
NOTHING you do will make a car survive a 170+ foot jump..... like.... ya make it out of I-beams the twin towers used.... and just a few gallons of jet fuel will melt it.... not to mention a ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOOT JUMP!
truth.. 309 were used, 19 were left over from filming, Lee 1 was found in a Ga. junkyard, another Lee was found somewhere. out of the 19 Survivors.. 17 were sold off, 2 were kept by WB. one ended up being used in the reunions, and the first movie, no 1970 Chargers were used in the TV series, the movies used 70's
The only reason I watched the 2005 movie was for the General Lee. They did a nice job preparing the cars for the big screen, however the steering wheels they used were horrible. I wish I could of been in charge of this project, I would of had all the surviving cast back. No doubt.
@charger19691 I agree, they should do a final move with the original cast. I grew up after the show had been out for many years but i grew up watching it on TNT haha. I think I have seen just about every episode.
Around where i live 30,000 is the asking price for unrestored examples. And maybe you can find one for 15,000. Ive seen some in the states advertised for 900. Which is unheard of around here. If the bad cars get made into "general lee's" then why dont they jump all the other general lees at the "dukesfest"?
Let me see if i understend... i'm braziliam fan and i don't learn english very well, but i'm watch series whem i was kid(82-83) This car survived 107 jumps????? in the movie???
wrong you are the original DOH series used all Chargers from'68-'71they had to modify the '68s because of the disc taillights and marker lights, and alot of folk don't realize that only the '69 Charger had a two piece front grille whereas the '68,'70&'71 had straight across grilles
They didn't use a 70 on the original TV show, they only used 69 and 68 even John Schneider said so himself, all due to the fact the grill would not have fit in place and wouldn't look right
The studios bought hundreds of cars from the LA auto auction not only for the Dukes but all the cop shows like Adam 12.They bought a awful lot of police cars up . They'ed buy something with a bad side and film the good side. A lot of the jump cars the Duke set used wouldnt even run (no motors less nose dive) and they used a pusher and shoved them up the ramp to make the jump. Most of that stuff was already junk before it hit the lot. Its called budgeting
Well I would restor it is a good thing in history and you could not get board because you would be getting the piece of art and history back together.(you can tell that I like the dukes of Hazzard I only like the old one though)
'Survived'? I think that is VERY debatable. Could easily make a case it didnt survive preparation for the jump let alone the jump itself. Given the condition of the subframe anyone who restored it would have to be suicidal.
I owned one of THE Dodge Ramchargers used in the movie "Lone Wolf McQuad" with Chuck Norris. twas bad-ass after I rebuilt it. Sold it for $1500 back in 89 stupid-stupid-stupid!
No that car was movie lee #127. This car is movie lee #15. This car can be seen at the end of the movie where they show the general lee swerving hard to the right into the guardrail and was also used for the comite river jump after movie lee #11 nose dived. (This car was originally a pre cooter general lee before they repainted it into post cooter so they can shoot the freeway jump scene)
There was no such thing as gassed powered jumps back then, every jump they did was with a driver, and one of the original General's is actually owned by John Schnider (bo duke)
The Charger is such a beautiful car, but unfortunately because of that it is subject to stuff like this. I loved watching the Dukes of Hazard, but they wasted waaayyy too many Chargers. Aftermarket sheet metal could have easily been made, and tube frames could have been made as well. It's a shame that the Charger herd was thinned thanks to production companies trying to keep costs down.
Hey Warner Brothers, if you were smart you would do one last movie with the original cast. Do it for the loyal fans of the show and make right with the original stars. The 2005 movie was a slap in the face to all the original cast members. They even made uncle Jesse a pothead in the movie. What a damn disgrace!!!
Eight years later and weed is finally losing it's undeserved reputation and gaining legal status across the U.S. Now the flag on the roof is a hated symbol and causes trouble wherever it's shown Funny how things change
TheFarmerfitz You're cherry picking facts. The Model T saw 15,000,000 made so by your calculations I should be seeing more Model Ts on the roads then Chargers.
Dr Spike ya but they didn't jump over to many creeks with Model T's....lol I'm saying, there was lots made...The ones they wrecked in All Dukes of Hazzard Movies and Series combined was just a drop in the bucket... Most Chargers used in the stunts probably were headed for the scrap yard anyway and were bought dirt cheap......
TheFarmerfitz Just pointing out your reasoning was not quite convincing... "Most Chargers used in the stunts probably were headed for the scrap yard anyway" PROBABLY??? Well as long as your sure of your facts then The question was rhetorical to begin with. I'm sure there are quite a few left
If Warner planning make another film or TV show of The Dukes of HAzzard ... instead of wrecking original chargers, they must build stunt cars with plastic molds over chassis taken of originals CHARGERS
May i ask why 57 chev convertables are in demand? Is it because of a movie or series? I was a fan of the show when i was 10 and stupid. Now i have grown up and think the show is dumb as hell. All types of muscle cars are appreciated, simply because they are MUSCLE cars. It was a waste to destroy the cars they did ( and still do). They are art regardless of percieved monetary value.
That's a pain to see these beautiful Chargers damaged like that. :'(
RELOADIAK what exer happend to General Lee from Fairwell Hazzard when no flipped it is that same car?
in the TV series they did not use 1970 Chargers. my information comes from the Confederate General Lee Fan Club, in the movies, they did, but the show, they used 68's & 69's.
i loved the show as a kid but being older i think it was a shame to destroy all those vintage American muscle cars rip generals rip
Same here! Back in the day as a child/teen, I thought it was so cool. As an adult, I'm like, Ohhhh man!, so many of those beautiful cars got wasted. No wonder they are so damn RARE today.
Guess they were just cars back then. Same way we look at newer vehicles now
Wait. Wait. Wait.
You're telling me that the man on the mic was not cosplaying as Woody from Toy Story?!
Oh shit lol
Somebody poisoned the water hole!!!!!☝️🤠
REACH FOR THE SKY!!
Dodge Charger and Starsky and Hutch's Gran Torino are in my opinion two of the most memorable cars.
STOP wrecking all these beautiful cars...they deserve to be saved...and as for the 2005 film ......wasted money and wasted Chargers...
sarahblackburn1 you know you can repair them right and if you hate this you should hate things like fast and furious
Km Ca and who's saying he doesn't?
the complete budget for each car from purchase to modification was $1600 each. At $300 per that was a total $480,000. Still, today we see it as blasphemy to have destroyed all of those wonderful Chargers.

I have too agree with you on that
i totally agree mate , these cars are legends. cars like that will never come back...

@stephanel7 no 1967 Chargers were used.

yes, i agree.
the duke boys have killed far too many chargers
HELL NO
Let Hollywood keep destroying them.
the more that go to scrap the better
makes mine worth more $$$
r3dph0n3
true makes them worth more... but it makes it way harder for a guy like me to get one thats in decent shape so i can build it
Malicious SRT The TV show actually did the charger a favour by making the 68-70 charger one of the most desirable cars to restore. "survived" is a big word
Yeah and it was really bold to assume someone would buy and restore the Damn thing!
Who wants to see a new Dukes TV series with the original stars. Just maybe in a little different role, age gets to us all.
I've always said that!! The real Bo And Luke And Daisy as dads and mom to a new generation of Duke boys! It would be amazing!!

He's not wrong. While that movie was panned for it script and plot -- it did have some incredible stunts and car chases.
Someone needs to restore that car!
the frame is probably bent the shit out of
Never used 1970 Chargers in the show. 1968 and 1969 was only 2 years in the show... Get your facts straight. Thank you.
Wrong.... they put a 69 front end on some 70s
I love dukes of hazard and general and the Dixie horn
Don't forget about Knight Rider car that was a very popular car back then as well it should be right up there with the Dukes Of Hazzard Car.
Nah dude, that design of firebird isn't that desirable. I do, however, understand your point. I think people will go on and do what they want because it was apart of their life and it was a fun time. neal6473 and fall guy

uh,NO!!!HELL NO!!Thats like saying they should've used a toyota for Knight Rider
Hey Dan Woods, here's a project for chop cut rebuild. The fenders and other parts could be in the musium,Save the car!

I like watching these cars smash when they land from a jump its awesome!!!!
@bandittweintraub
as i know they used 1970 chargers with 69 front end when they had difficulties to find 69 models.
you know something about that ?
I'm pretty sure that is the freeway jump car.. very cool
Yes...and even damaged it has value. :-)
I need to figure out what kind of Chassis reinforcement they did to make those cars survive that, the exterior looks bad but the car seemed pretty straight underneath.

Not true - they never used any 1970 chargers. Only 68s and 69s. That comes straight from the horse's mouth (the people that built them).
now my question is why dint they reinforce the suspension along with the structure and boom no more destroyed
cars
NOTHING you do will make a car survive a 170+ foot jump.....

Great video but.....
In the quiet shots you should have used the
Duke's of hazzard theme song for the background music
:)
Actually the general Lee was just 1968 and a 1969 Dodge charger R/T
That my friend was Tanner Foust :)
Wow great Info and Video.

@psyjpg one of 350crashed 69 chargers is worth half as much as a ford gt40 race car? i doubt it
"All car collectors have a soft spot for the general lee"... Yea the ones that were not destroyed just for a jump.
Got a mad life dude....and a cool car.
@charger19691 I agree, they should do a final move with the original cast. I grew up after the show had been out for many years but i grew up watching it on TNT haha. I think I have seen just about every episode.
for one thing this a uniboby car, hence no frame, all the front and rear are cont with subframe cont
I would buy that car any day :D

i cried a little bit when i saw the general like that
they should make another dukes of hazzard with the remaining original people who were in the first dukes of hazzard
actually, the original series didn't use any 1970 chargers. only 68s and 69s.
wrong you are the original DOH series used all Chargers from'68-'71they had to modify the '68s because of the disc taillights and marker lights, and alot of folk don't realize that only the '69 Charger had a two piece front grille whereas the '68,'70&'71 had straight across grilles
Michael Mungo WRONG they only used 68-69s. And 71s aren’t even close to the same they have an updated body style
They didn't use a 70 on the original TV show, they only used 69 and 68 even John Schneider said so himself, all due to the fact the grill would not have fit in place and wouldn't look right

Where did you get the Flexible Clipper from. Looks like mine.
is that an SJ boat tail next to it?
the original show never used 70 chargers
Well I would restor it is a good thing in history and you could not get board because you would be getting the piece of art and history back together.(you can tell that I like the dukes of Hazzard I only like the old one though)
great video thanks......
has this car been modified? I'm not sure if he mentioned it or not. I think restoring this would be impossible with out replacing everything
'Project car', you say?
a lot of stunts were done by Sean William Scot himself.
fun fact, there are people who would only pay $2500 for that car, but to a true fan I'd pay $3000 for the wheels lol
'Survived'? I think that is VERY debatable. Could easily make a case it didnt survive preparation for the jump let alone the jump itself. Given the condition of the subframe anyone who restored it would have to be suicidal.
By survived he means it isn't ripper to shreds. This on actually has it's panels and the car is relatively straight.
I owned one of THE Dodge Ramchargers used in the movie "Lone Wolf McQuad" with Chuck Norris. twas bad-ass after I rebuilt it. Sold it for $1500 back in 89 stupid-stupid-stupid!
I THINK THE FRAME MIGHT BE A LITTLE OUT OF ALIGNMENT?
no 70's chargers were used,, shows what he knows
there goes a third of the remaining chargers left...
Was this the car bought by Grave Yard Carz and on the show?
Sorry son'r know
No that car was movie lee #127. This car is movie lee #15. This car can be seen at the end of the movie where they show the general lee swerving hard to the right into the guardrail and was also used for the comite river jump after movie lee #11 nose dived. Is this in Volo?
Is that car still there
@bandittweintraub In the Tv series they only used 68, 67 and 69s only ones they used no 70's to much modifications needed to recreate the 69..
Only used 68 and 69 thats the only 2 years they used
'67s are very different looking Chargers.
@@speakfreeley4473 Do your research. They swapped front ends and tail ends. Way easier compared to buying a whole new car.
@@stephanel7 They would have needed new roofs as well for '67s. They were carryovers from the original '66s.
@@speakfreeley4473 I just realized the original comment, that was posted 9 years ago. I was rather young. Never meant to put 67' in there.

No I do not think so.
This car was restored on GraveYard cars.
A General Lee was restored on the show but this particular car was not
I saved my own car from the crusher, fighting the rust monster, I'd love to have a go at bringing that back to life!
I'll buy it, how much do you want for it?
That thing ain't got a hemi.....just some square tubing and a master cylinder!
One of the best action movies of all times? Embarrassment more like it.

Crazy Larry and dirty Mary. That show likely killed a couple
They put the flag on backwards, stars are supposed to all point to the drivers side.
Ain't no restoring that. Take the good parts, if any, and scrap the rest.
@bandittweintraub Tons were used trust me.
They never used 70 chargers in the show. They were too hard to convert to 69s
They never used a 70 all 68 and 69s .
I think if they wanted to use CGI they would hire a studio that is actually professional.
I know, I see that movie as a totally utter disgrace.
300 chargers taken out of service for TV and movies? Holy shit, are their any left?
