Only the second movie based on an SNL sketch after Blues Brothers. Although technically, Myers introduced Wayne on Canadian MTV first. This showed how the late '80s/early '90s SNL cast was the first time since the '70s that the show could really say it was on a hot streak again. Every movie SNL tried after this failed, including sequels to these 2 and 7 originals. The SNL cast of this era somewhat paralleled the success of the original cast in feature films. Like John Belushi, Chris Farley developed a fan base and had an aborted film career due to his death. Like Chevy Chase, Adam Sandler had a long and successful film career while facing an uphill battle with critics. Like Dan Aykroyd did with Ghostbusters, Mike Myers created an extremely bankable brand and franchise with Austin Powers. Then like Dan Aykroyd did with Nothing but Trouble, Mike Myers almost destroyed his career in one fell swoop with The Love Guru. Both of them also did some well-received work in supporting roles. That SNL era didn't quite produce a Bill Murray-like career but Will Ferrell from the next phase of SNL came closer to that.

Yes and even Dana Carvey really couldn't carve a niche for himself after SNL AT ALL. It wasn't just his heart problems he himself said he did a poor job in Wayne's World 2 and his failed comedy show on ABC really was cringeworthy no matter what people say in hindsight. Years later he did that awful Master's of Disguise but I'll say this Dana is pretty well grounded, he never had to worry about money and concentrated more on raising his kids and he's come out smelling like a rose. Chevy, Belushi, Farley, Hartman, Kattan, Norm, Rocket didn't fare as well most of these guys had very dysfunctional families as their foundation.

@@erichaynes7502 He was supposedly offered to take over Letterman's show on NBC before Conan was but turned it down. He probably thought his movie career could take off which would require a lot less work than a daily talk show. They almost did a Hans and Franz movie with Arnold which was going to have a Siskel and Ebert subplot: "Smigel recalled one of his favorite running gags from the movie, which involved Siskel and Ebert reviewing the movie onscreen as it was going on, with Hans and Franz barging into the screening room throughout to ask the critics how they’re enjoying the film." Seems like the natural next step for this gag after Leonard Maltin's cameo in Gremlins 2. Of course they already did this joke on an SNL special in the '80s where Siskel and Ebert reviewed each short film as the show went on.

@@jedijones I don't think replacing Letterman would have worked, it just seems Dana was a very likeable smart guy with a couple of characters in his pocket when he went to SNL. Once those characters were used up he was done. I'm glad it all worked out for him in the long run, good dude.

@@erichaynes7502 I think he had the potential to do something more than what he did. It's kind of a crime when you compare his net worth to Adam Sandler's if you believe like I do that Sandler was the least talented person on SNL in the early '90s and Carvey was the funniest. Carvey has been able to come up with new impressions in recent years if you watch some of his talk show appearances and stand-up. Master of Disguise seemed like the right concept for him but it was a huge miscalculation to make it a kids movie. It should've been going for the same audience Fletch went for and also going for Carvey's SNL fans. Newsradio was a quality show for Phil Hartman but had trouble in the ratings. If Dana Carvey had been added as a cast member it might've boosted the popularity. And a radio setting would give Dana the chance to do impressions on the radio, like fake interviews. Or if he could've found a part like Harry Anderson in Night Court or Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy that would give him room to act a little zanier and still be the lead of the show. People probably didn't need to see him dressed up as different characters but they would want him to be able to go through his different voice impressions.

@@jedijones There's a Netflix(or some other streaming service) documentary on Dana's infamous failed comedy show in the late 90's. You can see almost all of it parts on UA-cam, I just can't think of the name right now. It looks like that show was more cringe-worthy than anything. Anyway, it the doc Dana does talk about how one night he went home and his son said something like "I really missed you this week, dad". Very heartbreaking I think that's when Dana really slowed it down.

He's definitely more discerning than Ebert, but it makes it all the more satisfying when he does like something. His reviews of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, Pulp Fiction and Fargo were bang on.
