Henry: A Portrait of a Serial Killer (1985) At Those Movies
Here's a slasher movie that both Siskel and Ebert thumbsed but it couldn't get released! Stuff seems tame compared to today to be honest with ya. To be even more honest I'd recommend this movie but I think you'd enjoy the more realistic and fun "Confessions of a Serial Killer" over HAPSK. Heck, why not make it a double feature?

Ghost(1990) At Those Movies

Just think, back in 1990 this movie out grossed Total Recall, Home Alone, Pretty Woman, and Dancing with Wolverines. Early sign of the upcoming apocalypse? Our fave scribes Ebert and Siskel were at odds at how come Molly(Demi) absolutely refuses to believe her ex-bf is a ghost! Um, maybe Molly(Demi) is smarter than she looks? ngl I just wondered why she sports a man's haircut and loose fitting ...

Anybody remember this flick from late summer 1991? Along with Mickey Rourke and Dons Johnson this vehicle had up and coming stars like Daniel Baldwin, Tia Carrere, Kelly Hu, along with pre drug crazed Tom Sizemore. To our surprise Siskel and Ebert are at odds about this movie..so much at odds they end up fighting over whether a leather chair was a leather chair or a metal counsel, whatever coun...

Amazingly enough, this is a TV movie, shown on HBO instead of a movie theater. Great enough to win an Emmy, Great enough to be reviewed by Siskel & Ebert. You might find this a timely movie as the plot involved taking a public company private. Elon Musk much?

Here's a higher quality version of this historical movie review. Ebert actually convinces/tricks Siskel into changing his upward thumb downward. Note Siskel at 2:25 catches himself saying "it doesn't work", he knew he was busted. Also, if you look closely you'll see an edit that really enhances this review. Maybe the show's ratings were suffering a little and they decided to spice things up a b...

This Errol Morris documentary attempts to discover what makes renowned physicist Stephen Hawking tick. Hawking then tries to explain how your watch would tick if you fell into a black hole. Siskel & Ebert are split over whether to recommend this film. However, they both agree Morris should have delved a little deeper into the singular(haha) mind of Stephen Hawking. With a run time of 80 minutes...

Director Edward James Olmos directs and stars in this movie about the origins of the Mexican Mafia in the California prison system. This movie caused a lot of outrage from the Mexican Mafia, as they felt the homosexual rape scenes were way out of line. Several of the consultants reportedly were murdered after this movies release. I gotta admit Olmos dug deep into many issues within the Latino c...

This movie was so good that both Siskel & Ebert give a emphatic thumbs up. Ebert liked that the plotline was much clearer than Clancy's book(I wholeheartedly agree). Siskel liked how the intelligence community played their cat and mouse games, along with Alec Baldwin's(back when he wasn't a a complete lunatic) standout performance. Audiences certainly agreed this was worth watching, this was th...
The Principal (1987)

This 1987 blast from the past features Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr.(barely). Belushi takes on the unenviable role as a principal trying to clean up a drug infested High School. You know it's the 80's when you see Junior from Platoon in a small role as one of the gang members. Naturlich, Siskel and Ebert give opposing thumbs with Ebert buying into Belushi's role, in principal.. and Siskel t...

Incredibly BOTH Siskel & Ebert take turns wildly swinging at Reservoir Dogs until it ends up beat to a pulp, much like Butch's opponents in the ring so long ago. I'll correct their error in judgement. Reservior Dogs is Quentin Tarantino's first movie, it was a very big success. The acting and dialogoue are outstanding. Add to the fact this movie has numerous iconic scenes gives this movie 4 Sta...

This might be where Hollywood took a really close look at Paul Verhoeven. Gene and Roger really liked this film with it's combination of ultra-violence and comedic timing. It's impossible to find a way to get offended by this flick, although I bet some people nowadays will somehow find a way. Anyone know how Verhoeven's movies looked so colorful, crisp, and clear?
Siskel & Ebert Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) At Those Movies
Переглядів 20 тис.3 роки тому
Is this the best Star Wars movie ever? Both Siskel and Ebert praise how well Empire Strikes Back weaves new worlds, creatures and their "awe inspiring" sights into one of film history's ultimate Sci-Fi Adventures. What a great time this was at the Midland theater in downtown Kansas City the first week of release back in May, 1980.

I think this review shows how being a movie critic can be problematic. Here Gene gives a thumbs down because he the plot is too predictable and he says the main characters(Martin/Caine) don't interact very well. I mean, comeon these guys are a riot there's enough laughs to makeup for the lack of laughs in another comedy that came out around this time, Scrooged. At least Roger looked past the fe...
Siskel & Ebert Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) At Those Movies
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 роки тому
This was the 2nd highest grossing movie of 1993, only losing out to Jurassic Park by 500 million or so. Gene bought Robin Williams under all that makeup, while Roger absolutely did not. One of those rare super hits that never got a sequel I'll take this over Tootsie any day.
Siskel & Ebert Double Impact (1991) At Those Movies
Переглядів 2,3 тис.3 роки тому
Hey, you get TWO JCVD for the price of one! There's a lot to like with this flick and it was a money maker at the heights of Van Damme's power in 91. Gene and Roger have some nice things to say but they wanted more humor. I think I saw this in Biloxi but maybe that was Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Still waiting for Double Impact 2 time's a wastin'.

I agree with their assessment, but I was not expecting them to praise the movie.
Mickey Rourke was amazing in the movie. He may have got an Oscar nomination if it was made in the 2000s.
Barfly is trash compared to this.
Anybody have the review from 1980?
Glengary is a great drinking game movie. You shot every time leads is said
This film actually lost 10 million dollars, it didn't even break with everyone taking massive pay cuts. Al Pacino, at the height of his career, took one million dollars after a year of coaxing, (his fees at the time was 6 - 8 million per film). The score was performed by the great Jazz legend Wayne Shorter, it is a truly great film.
Ebert missed the plot 🤦♂️
Ahhh, Gene...wrong again. God love ya. A side note, Nothing in Common has similar theme and Basner ends up with the "original" girl who is truly far more naturally beautiful than Sela Ward.
Roger Ebert didn't like My Cousin Vinny.....why exactly did we take anything that moron ever said seriously?
Ebert thinks he's better than the writers. HE would've built suspense by making us care about Ralph's character, so he didn't even consider how the audience was supposed to care through what they did build- that Vinny was almost fired by his family, that he has never won a case, that he might be racing against the clock for getting discovered faking his credentials, that the tide REALLY starts to turn when the subplot of Lisa wanting to help hits it's apex and they were solving the case through their own knowledge, or in the conflict between Vinny and the judge, or Vinny learning how to make an impact in the southern court room, or even the tiny things like Vinny staying in jail to sleep for the case. Everybody on earth was invested in the trials outcome except that one dude who was ignoring everything because they thought we were supposed to care about the random nephew that was like the tenth biggest character in the film lol
Like seriously, if you can't feel the build up of excitement watching him start to destroy witnesses, then realizing from the pictures that they had the wrong car, then Tomei realizing it on the stand, surviving voir dire, and then the expert being unable to refute and the charges being dropped all in a matter of minutes, you're actually bad at watching movies lol
It never would have worked with a lesser actor
I kind of get the sense there is a good man, a person who can be redeemed, under a tremendous weight of feeling worthless down deep. Why so hellbent on self-destruction?
The nun, yes, undergoes a violent trauma. It is unpleasant, sick. But she does not allow it to mar her soul. Yes, this happened, but I’m not stuck in it. Because someone else is trying to pollute me or even succeeds in harming me, they can do nothing to my essential self, my sacred soul. She is free of the need for revenge. It’s a very interesting film. 🎥 And, in my opinion, a great one.
Gene’s wonderful insight: Can a guy who sees himself as so profoundly bad become redeemed and see himself as good? Can you change your view of yourself? 😊
Rather watch this again than anything else MTV makes
A film critic in a UK newspaper said, 'Any film written and directed by someone called Yahoo Serious, is a must see. If he never makes another film he will have supplied us with on of the best comedies ever!' And he was right.
Acting is purely SUPERB! Doesn’t get any better than this
Roger's assessment of the movie, I think, shows his greatness as a film critic. Even if he doesn't like the movie, he can completely understand what it's trying to do and why some people enjoy it.
What the hell do they kno
I understand Siskel's point. It's as if Depalma gets Pacino in front of the camera and wants to aggrandize his scenes to fulfill his star character. Instead of letting the plot play out and let Pacino develop the role specifically for his part.
i absolutely love this film. Its fun and entertaining and both of them are charismatic as hell. And its cheesy and simple and im love it
I think S&E were way off the mark. Compared to movies today, it's refreshing. I think this type of rock & roll fantasy was really cute. This movie deserves at least a 6/10 stars... personally, I'd go as high as 8/10.
I love this movie.
This movie is AWFUL.
Awful movie.
Can we agree Ebert was the smart one,
This movie is crazy 🤣! My oldest brother and I watched it.
Siskel: “I don’t like him.”
People forget the Ebert used to be a bit of trolling critic (before he fell ill and lost his ability to speak). He was much less reasonable and sensible than Gene Siskel. He got many reviews wrong including this one. BUT everyone forgot about all of that when he literally became a smiling fixture of "inspiration and courage". Not a bad guy....just a little DBaggy back in the day. The nerd of the two...but the worst kind of nerd...one that was unwarrantedly arrogant.
I liked it as much as planes trains and automobiles. Personally I would have loved to see the late John candy in the lead role or guys like Mel Gibson, Jim Belushi, John Goodman, Dan aykroyd, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Michael Keaton, Tim Allen, Jeff bridges, and Kurt Russell in the lead role but Ed O’Neill does it very good.
Siskel is way off. Plus he has no appreciation of the Sean Penn character. There are so many lawyers that are just like that guy. Penn played it so well.
Joe was robbed of an Oscar 🎉
For the record, this aired in 1990.
1:59 - 2:05 Smart man.
So many of these great films were poo pooed by Ebert. Siskel had a much better perspective on what was good and what was not.
It's funny in hindsight, Gene Siskel rating 'Year of the Dragon' (1985) higher than 'Angel Heart' (1987). History hasn't been kind to 'Year of the Dragon', which seems like a forgettable action thriller nowadays, whereas 'Angel Heart' has become a cult classic.
Lemon’s daughter was in the hospital, not his wife
Al Pacino deservedly got nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but they should have nominated Jack Lemmon, too.
Siskel was rabid
siskel liked it as a comedy least he liked it but it wasent a comedy
This movie is a masterpiece!
I wonder if Gene actually watched the movie.....Watts wears mens boxers she has a cute body but not knockout like Leah....people just never got Hughes vision. Finny that this movie was his best reviewed by NY Times.
Gotta disagree with the Ebes on this one. _My Cousin Vinny_ is one of my ten favorite comedies of all-time.
They were right. Adrian Lyne should have stuck with the original ending.
im surprised siskel liked it. the movie was hot garbage lol.
I saw this film about 25 years ago and I absolutely 100% agree with both of them about it. Even NC-17 as _Bad Lieutenant_ was, Harvey Keitel STILL should have been nominated for Best Actor. He wuz robbed.
In the middle of the video, the kids walking by in the background were not hired extras. They were average New Yorkers that assumed it was normal to see Harvey jamming a pistol in someone’s face
Great movie! I wouldn't mind a real good remake, perhaps directed by Vince Gilligan!
iskel one year before brain cancer wrecked him
This movie is scary as hell ! It's definitely one of my favorites! It's an extremely underrated flick. Robert DeNiro was insidiously great. I think this was the best acting performance in Micky Rourkes career!
