This looks amazing. Thank you. AI / upscalling naysayers are a joke. The original 1970 show was probably recorded on ropey on 2 & 1/4in video reel to reel which had notoriously bad definition, colour bleed and archival longevity, coupled with the BBC's use of very early colour separation overlay [blue-screen / later green-screen technology] to superimpose backgrounds from stock footage - instead of expensive OB recording trips - which had all sorts of weird shimmer and halo / rainbow affects around people and objects... Read up on the problems of restoring Pertwee era Doctor Who episodes if you want all the gory details of how bad 1970's BBC video recording could be. This video is probably the best that Doomwatch has ever looked.
Maybe the AI could be used less aggressively to achieve a " half way house" result which would massively improve on the original material but not go so far as to make everyone look like waxwork figures.
I agree that there is more potential doom that needs to be watched today: AI getting out of hand, cyber attacks, bio-weapons, drone swarms, micro drones..etc. The only problem I have is imagining that any one organisation in one country would have the power to even slow down a threat, let alone keep a lid on it.
Sorry, but the AI program does not work. There is bleeding around the edges of heads and the people look like computer generated avatars. It cannot cope with any movement, and even static shots, for instance the aircraft seats and set look cartoon like. I would like to see this episode without the processing. I have looked at this both on computer and also large screen TV. Nice attempt but it doesn't work.
I think it makes them look like advanced humanoid robots. But it's only the faces that let it down. The algorithm needs improvement but it looks like it has greatly improved the definition.
Looking at the people, I'm surprised they didn't melt too.

This looks incredible! Great work!
You need glasses, the AI is making their faces look completely unnatural.
British TV when it was good.....ahead of its time
Despite the moaners I don’t think the AI is that bad and I am grateful for the poster’s effort. Perhaps others would like to do better?!
It was ahead of its time back then, but it's the concept is needed now
As an American, I'd heard of Doomwatch but never seen an episode. Even though this AI isn't the best, it's given me an opportunity to see it!
I watched this in black and white in 1970
A reboot of this could feature the effect of microplastics in our food.. 😢😢 hence plastic eaters. Scary but borderline.

DOOM WATCH
"The Plastic Eaters"

People's trousers falling down around their ankles -- all over the world! :0/
Wild hairstyles

The cravats though eh? Lord almighty lol 😂
Probably the most excessive use of AI upscaling, I've ever seen. It makes the actors look like CGI, or cellshaded animation.
The AI on this looks awful.
Makes their faces look photoshopped and not natural at all.
