- This video is a compilation of most of the shows that were new, and cancelled (or those that were mid-season replacements), from the 1970-71 prime time TV schedule. A couple of the intros are missing, but I've included some of the details of the show.

David Hartman’s acting career had more misses than hits, but he found his niche hosting “Good Morning America”.
I always liked David Hartman, I do remember his show Lucas Tanner. I don’t recall if it was GMA or the Today Show but I also remember Mariete Hartley on one of the shows. I loved her on The Twilight Zone, Star Trek and Columbo among others.
Be sure to check David Hartman out in the 1970 Made-For-TV Movie "San Francisco International", with Pernell Roberts and Tab Hunter...It was just uploaded here to UA-cam a week ago! 19:17- "NANCY" was Sidney Sheldon's final series. He wrote all 17 episodes, using the same aliases when he wrote various episodes of "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" from 1967 through '69 {"Mark Rowane", "Allan Devon", "Christopher Golato"}, because he didn't want to see his name credited too many times during each episode.
I remember The Immortal. It was basically The Fugitive with a twist.
Also remember Dan August. It was a good series that got caught in scheduling issues and never really took off--but the acting and scripts were great.
I can still vaguely remember it as a young kid. he eats a poisoned tomato...

Makes us sound old when you phrase it like that... but back than junior high was 6th though 8th grade now days some states change from 7th grade though 8th and even though 9th grade the times had changed, but we're not getting older just wiser, lol

@@denisesmith2745 Yes, that was a good time to be a kid. I think my favorite TV show (that lasted more than half of one season) was "Alias Smith and Jones."
All these programs(& even the COMMERCIALS! back then) are a million time better than almost all the crap on free tv now.
And yet back then people were complaining that all the new shows were crap and there was nothing to watch.

Even watching compilations like this is more entertaining than most of today's free TV.

Sounds like Tim Conway's old buddy Ernie Anderson is the announcer for his show. Here in Cleveland, we remember Ernie best as the horror movie host Ghoulardi, which he did from 1963 to 1966. Ernie later became the booth announcer for ABC ("The LOOOOOOOOVE Boat!").

Danny Thomas should have had another spinoff called “Make room for this glass top coffee table”.
Fun to look back and see the primitive technology they used.
Seeing the payphone with a 'out of order sign' on it made me laugh out loud

The Young Rebels was an attempt to make the American Revolutionary War "relevant" for the hippies of that time.

Dan August got a second run in 1977 when Burt Reynolds roared his way back into the spotlight with "Smokey and the Bandit," as did his other short-lived TV series, ""Hawk," from 1966
TV wasn't much kind to Burt until Evening Shade came along. That was an eclectic cast of characters.

That Norman Fell gag was pretty good! Damn man, these videos must've taken a hell of a lot of work. I've never seen ANY of these shows on YT, even lists of forgotten 70s shows. I know I'VE forgotten almost all of these. Except Sandy Duncan's. God I had such a crush on her. Anyways, excellent job!

It’s hard to imagine The Bold Ones NOT being successful. It had a powerhouse of top actors. It’s the only show on this list I remember, although I was only 12. Interesting that Dan Hartman was in both the Bold Ones and San Francisco International Airport.

I also liked The Bold Ones, but it did have a lot of popular competition. Although the premise of having different genres every week was original.
The Bold Ones lasted several years. It was only the segment "The Bold Ones: The Senator" that lasted one season. It didn't do so well because every single episode was a political lecture.
IT was successful...4 seasons. The New Doctors was at least.
The Bold Ones was a good show that ran from 1968 to 1973. Thats hardly short lived.
I think it was the Hal Holbrook character that was short lived due to bad writing.
His segment was sort of like West Wing, except he played a Senator.
The political premises were unrealistic or very heavy handed. It was usually him, for some reason, standing alone against hollow headed strawmen, and needing to somehow convince anyone with half a brain to see things his way. Audiences tuned out.
I spotted a VW bus and a VW Beetle! I had a ‘65 VW Bug. First car I ever owned. Loved that car.
I was eyeing that VW bus myself never owned one always wanted to I thought they were so cool back in the day.
Andy Griffin having two shows canceled within a year slowed his career a bit by the mid 70's.
Andy Griffith was in a bind. He tried to move away from Sheriff Andy Taylor but people wouldn’t accept anything else. He didn’t find a steady gig until “Matlock”.
What happened was the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers paid $3.5 million back in 1970 to get a season long series starring Andy Griffith.
The initial show was Headmaster which didn’t work out in the ratings and was canceled at midseason.
The New Andy Griffith Show; which aired in the second half of the season in the same timeslot might not have ever been greenlit if Headmaster had done well enough in the ratings to go to the end of the season.

Side note: The 1970-71 TV network season gets my vote for the most interesting season in the history of broadcast TV.
We have the rural purge at the end, and as a result, we have a mix of programs that were on TV that spanned different eras.
Consider that on one end you have The Ed Sullivan Show, Lawrence Welk show and Red Skelton Show. Three programs that had been on TV since 1948, 1955, and 1951 respectively.
If we are counting shows that originated on radio, then 1970-71 was also the final season of Kraft Music Hall; which first started in 1934.
And on the other end of the spectrum, just getting started were All in the Family, the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and in its third season was Hawaii Five-O.
Shows that went to 1979, 1977, and 1980 respectively.
This was also the first season of Monday Night Football as a regular telecast, which is still active of course (though it was exclusively on cable for a number of years).
All those shows intersected for one season, and that one season is 1970-71.

Side note: The 1970-71 TV season gets my vote for the most interesting one in the history of television.
We see an intersection of eras all at once.
In one hand we have Kraft Music Hall, the Ed Sullivan Show, The Red Skelton Show, and the Lawrence Welk Show. Shows that had been going since 1934, 1948, 1951 and 1955 respectively.
And on the other end we have the Mary Tyler Moore Show, All in the Family, Hawaii Five-O, and Monday Night Football.
Shows that would go until 1977, 1979, 1980, and a sports telecast that currently airs.
All those shows intersected for one year in 1970-71.
For some reason “the Immortal”scared the heck out of me at age 8

Legendary cartoon voice actor and announcer Paul Frees does the voiceover in the beginning of The Immortal (11:22). Headmaster (21:31) features a theme song performed by Linda Ronstadt, plus character actor Parker Fennelly (the Pepperidge Farm guy in TV ads during the '60s and '70s) as the school groundskeeper/janitor.
The best part of these shows were the cars of that era.

@@deniswilliams2212some were good many good shows go nowhere and crappy shows become big hits for 3 to 10 years a 1 year wonder doesnt mean the show is bad you really think mash deserved a 11 year run and i like mash..
Also next to the cars the music and the ladies cars and fashion go out of style but not women.
Although I only remember a few of these shows, this just brings back old memories of my childhood

Thank you. I appreciate your suggestion. I do start to add that bit of information in the videos that I've made (1971-72, 1972-73), and will look to continue doing so for future seasons.
Not all of the shows though, show up in the ratings (mid-season replacements and such).
I was even considering adding WHY those shows were cancelled, beyond the ratings.

I'm 75 I've never heard of any of these shows. They must have really been short lived, like in the blink of an eye. lol

They ran against other shows that you did like and they didn't play them again. They're gone. No VCR no on demand. I can remember the commercials for a couple of these but some ran after my bedtime😅. I had homework and Band, chores, better things to do. Generally those days TV was boring as you can see. 😊

The early 70s was the last gasp of the variety shows.
I remember watching The Bold Ones with my parents late nite.
I miss those old variety shows. A little bit of everything in one show.
So I've watched a few of these videos. My biggest question is "why didn't some of these shows make it?“ If you look at the stars, as well as who produced them (Sheldon Leonard is a prime example)...all I can think is that films and TV finally had that unavoidable meeting of the minds, not to mention that a lot of the older 60s shows got forced out. Movie stars were finally embracing television, and TV stars were trying to hang on to what they had built. PS: who doesn't love Sandy Duncan? 😁

HAH! The intro for "San Francisco International Airport" has a shot of a plane's landing gear extending - from a B-52 Bomber! If a B-52 lands at SFO, they're going to have a REAL drama!
The Dan August clips are hilarious. He's always jumping, leaping, running into camera. I'll bet he picked up an injury or 2 on that show. And a friend of mine was so bummed out when The Immortal got canceled. It was worse than The Beatles breaking up for him.
Compared to how quickly the networks cancel new shows now, some after only 2-3 episodes, the new old shows got what today counts for a whole season!!
For whatever reason, I recognized “The Bold Ones” about a second in; they must’ve advertised it a lot. There’s also a few other shows I remember. I was 13-14 at the time and Dad picked the shows.

The Young Lawyers looks like The Mod Squad in a legal setting.
BURT REYNOLDS was not successful as "DAN AUGUST" from September 1970 to April 1971 as the tv series had only
26 episodes but he made up for it by starring in the blockbuster movie "DELIVERANCE" released on July 1972 . This
movie made BURT REYNOLDS a major movie star !
Looks like Jan Michael Vincent's hair was just starting to grow back post,"Tribes".
There was a new network added to the big 3, PBS, but they were typically on UHF instead of VHF.
I noticed some “Ironside”, “Marcus Welby, MD”, and “Mod Squad” clones. It is sort of like “They liked it the first time, we’ll do it again.”
The industry is like that. When Eight Is Enough aired there were at least two other large family clones that came out around the same time. There were also a spate of hospital shows that came out around the same time as St. Elsewhere. Heck, happens with Hollywood, too. Remember all the baseball movies in the 80s? Or the deep sea horror films around the time The Abyss came out?
@@tstockelTrue enough. “The Immortal” is an example of another clone - an innocent person on the run. It started with “The Fugitive”, and continued with other series, such as “The Incredible Hulk”; “Hot Pursuit”; “Lucan”; “The Phoenix” ; and even odd ones, like “Run Buddy Run”; and “Run Joe Run” on Saturday mornings.

This happens all the time with not only television but also movies, books, music, streaming programs UA-cam channels., etc. Everybody wants a piece of an appealing idea that reliably generates sales or ad revenue.

I will definitely be going into the '60s and the '80s, though I'm mostly excited about the early '60s through to the early '80s. The late '80s (bleeding into the early '90s) isn't as exciting, though my plan is to cover that period too.
Some years later Zalman King was producing, but I don’t think acting in soft core porn. For people who know Yiddish or Hebrew, Zalman is considered a pretty goofy outdated name.
Yup, he did the Red Shoe Diaries series for Showtime.
Too bad Barefoot in the Park failed. A show starring Scoey Mitchell and Nipsey Russell sounds like it should have been a riot!

Inger Stevens was originally cast in “The Most Deadly Game”, but she killed herself. Yvette Mimieux replaced her.
I don't remember that show??? But I remember alias Smith and Jones and when Peter duel committed suicide they replaced him with Roger Davis it just wasn't the same, and I always thought if Davis was cast at the beginning of the show it might have lasted longer, I always thought it was a great show just like the guns of will sonnet

The 60s and 70s had the best shows by far . When TV was TV. By the mid 80s TV shows weren't as good. Look TV now. Nothing but garbage. Long live the Oldies. Same with music as well.
At 1:23, that's Ernie Anderson doing the voice-over, isn't it? Fancy him being somewhere other than ABC, as "The Tim Conway Comedy Hour" was on CBS.
While I only remember The Bold Ones (and astonishing how it was cancelled with such a a great cast) it is amazing to see all the great actors in these series, both established and at the start of their careers. Loved Hilarie Thompson in everything she did (what ever happened to her). Also the actor David Arkin from Men at Law - is he related to Alan and Adam Arkin?

I remember The Young Rebels. I was 15 and had a major crush on the French actor.
Assuming that the networks still own the rights to these shows, I don't know why none of them ever try remaking any of them for a modern audience. The ideas for these shows in all of these videos are not horrible in and of themselves.

No restoration on my part April. For what's available, it probably is the clearest clip. I don't think you can get them on DVD or streaming (researching this), though there are a few episodes available on UA-cam; lower quality of course.
One of the last seasons I remember watching before my high school graduations. Some shows I remember, most I don't.

How the hell did The Bold Ones flop? Talk about an all star cast. Hal Holbrook, EG Marshall, Burl Ives, David Hartman(Pre Good Morning America of course), John Saxon, James Farentino, and Leslie Nielson. Holy crap. Of course, my 5-6 year old self doesn't remember any of these shows because they came on after my bed time but wow this one should have been a sure thing.
The Immortal looked kinda cool.

Wonder how many of these shows I may have watched but slipped through the ole memory but sure remember the names then the faces. Kinda corney but definitely revisiting old friends

0:38 I recognize Hilarie from "If it's Tuesday, This must be Belgium." I love that movie! 😊 I just realized I also know her from a Brady Bunch episode.
Yes that's right I forgot about that movie - now that i remember it was a laugh riot as i had gone on many European tours and the real tourists acted just like in the movie - a zany, unpredictable of disparate backgrounds and personalities drawn together for better or worse for the duration of the trip. And I remember Hilarie in that movie now but not the Brady Bunch episode - will have to look up that one.

“Barefoot in the Park” came out in tandem with “The Odd Couple,” which, of course, ran for years. And I remember Tim Conway‘s show as being hilariously offbeat and ahead of its time as far as comedy goes, which is probably the reason it didn’t succeed.
Zalman King had a striking resemblance to Sean Penn.
I found the theme on another anthology; but I am surprised by the absence of the theme(s) to "TheAquqnauts"/"Malibu Run".
20;16 I remember watching The Interns. I was in kindergarten.
Only 12 at the time remember mom watching the Bold Ones didn't realize it wasn't on very long for me it was The Immortal always liked Christopher George in Rat Patrol he never got a long running series
The sad thing about "The Senator" was that it won several Emmy awards, including star Hal Holbrook.
It's ironic the series The Immortal came outb16byears BEFORE the 1st Highlander movie
