Brilliant stuff, Linsey - I am working on instrument designs optimized for 3D printing, to lower the barrier of entry to traditional and historical music. Swapping a cane reed for a membrane makes all kinds of one-octave bagpipes accessible, and folks can get comfortable with the fingering and scales of the 'normal' instrument. I hope to develop additional double reed designs that are as straightforward to make and set up as this. You've shown so much to be possible!
Linsey, you are a lighthearted inspiration. It occurs to me I might be able to take a pre-made Irish penny whistle, remove the head and put such a reed on it. This would guarantee it being in tune with other Irish instruments.
hi Noe, the tuning will probably be a bit out as the acoustics of the duduk reed (closed top end) and a tin whistle (open top end, die to the fipple) are different
@@SquealyD an interesting problem in acoustics to consider. I play Irish traditional music recreationally and would like a D pipe to annoy my colleagues. I play the Indian shehnai and the Ladakhi surna, so your duduk intrigues me. Where in Australia are you BTW? My son and family are in Brisbane.
I just successfully made a version of this. I have the irrigation pipe, but subbed some CPVC, had to get creative with a coupling to connect the reed, then adapted the pipe length to accommodate that change, and converted to inches. The reed could probably use some shaping by I can get all 9 notes nicely in tune. The reed also works for bassoon-length stuff I’m experimenting on.
I really appreciate you man, you take time in the particular moments and present each module with a simplistic demonstration, it brings me joy because you click my brain just like that 🎉

Living in the US, the irrigation pipe I found is way too thick in the walls. Even if I can get the reed to play easily, even after the time it takes to attach it to the pipe it's already separate too far and the reed no longer works. Cool idea though
hi Linsey, thank you for your video, the duduk sounds awesome! May i ask you what is the angular difference between the centers of B and A holes, furthest from the reed?
Awesome! Can you show us how to make an Armenian bass Shvi in D? I think you could make it with a pvc pipe and a tin whistle mouthpiece. I can't find the calculations for it or even the scale.
Hi! Thanks for sharing your knowlegde! This is stunning! Unfortunately, in Norway, we can only get copper pipes semi hard/hard 12mmX1mm thickness and LDPE pipe ID 13 OD 16. I guess it could fit but all the measures for the holes position would change...?!!! What do you think? How to find the new measures? I'm so frustrated not to be able to get the proper sizes! Thanks a lot in advance!! :)
In theory, you could "anneal" the polypipe by heating it up to approximately 125 degrees Fahrenheit and let it cool a couple of times to make the polypipe reed keep its shape. I have not tested this yet, so try this at your own peril, polyethylene when heated can release fumes that irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.

I'm trying to make an Arghoul or alternatively a Mijwiz from some bamboo sticks, but I'm kinda lost and not finding much useful information on this, would you mind making a tutorial like this on that? Would be absolutely lovely.
Would you share how you determined the length for the pipe? I have done a calculation with a pipe of ID 11mm and came up with a different length of 447 mm.
Great stuff, is there a reliable way to calculate the dimensions for a given mouthpiece and tuning? Or is it all trial and error. Any help appreciated:)
Wonderful! I'll give it a go this arv :) I do a fair bit of irrigation work, and if I need to permanently reshape poly pipe, a quick hit with a blow torch or a cigarette lighter does the trick. I wonder if heating and squishing in a vice before the hammering might leave the reed more inclined to stay put.
Actually you need the spring back (which eventually settles to the correct amount of springback). Using the heat gun releases the tension which is actually needed.
@@alaspooryorick9946 you'll be happy to know that I did a bit more experimenting with the heat gun (I had tried it about 6 months ago with no success)....and the trick is the use heat to slightly flatten the polypipe but not all the way so that there is still some springback ...I will keep working on this ...but it my be a combination of heat gun and sanding back to thin certain areas fairly precisely
Wow, I wonder how well it holds up compared to a regular duduk reed. Those are so temperamental, requiring warmup if not recently used and sometimes even cooldown after too much use. They also permanently go bad after a while... Either that or I keep buying not-so-good reeds.
i'm in the US and i used 3/4 inch polypipe thickwall, and I got it to work but I had to work at it for a long time, and it's not great. But you can get it to make a sound. 3/4 polypipe can stretch right over 1 inch copper with a blow torch, just heat the poly pipe for 2 seconds
