It sounds like the ungodly child of a broken gameboy and a squeaky door. And it's angry at the world. I love it !
Thanks!

Dial-Up: The Musical
That's the spirit!
I can’t wait to see how this comment blows up with likes 👌🏻
Id pay good money to see that!
2:04 56kb modem that was the days
tulululu crrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhrrrrrrrr
The challenge for me, was just watching till the end. He has perfected the ability to make irritating sounds
This was the challenge, nailed it!
U gud?
Now you just need like 10 of them rigged up to play together all tritones and minor seconds apart, and slightly detuned for maximum annoyance.
@@nathanjasper512 Now that's just evil
It's like acoustic chipcore
Right?
Lmao
The long pipe sounds remind me of the arcade game Tempest
That's exactly what I was thinking! It sounds so much like a heavily bitcrushed synth.
Wet farts, squeaking dorhinges, and the screeching sound of an old chair being draged across a linoleum floor, all combined in perfect harmony. This is a miracle.
This sounds like it really wanted to be an electronic instrument but was told it had to be a flute.
Nicolas: Let's make the worst wind instrument in the world
EDM producers: No, no, I think he's on to something...
i hope there will be a proper trombone style version of this for maximum phasing
That's what I was hoping for!
Yes
These sounds remind me of some kind of crazy digital device from the old days. Even DSL modems did not give out such a phony)
telefax machines...
early printers.....
floppy disc.....
no internet.....
some kids had a walkman, only two in my class a discman....
fancy modern people back then had a "mobile phone" which simply meant that the telephone apparatus itself (here in switzerland at the time owned by the swiss gouvernement's post, telegraph and telephone departement PTT, telephone bills included the rent of the PTT-apparatus) was not mounted to the wall anymore, but sat on the table with 20m cord so you could take it to the kitchen with you. (Also telefax machines were PTT owned and had to be rented)
god, i'm getting old....😱
You made an instrument that sounds like Clown Core's vocals
another CC fan in here i see
@@eelnoodles make it three
Thai would be four

It's like a flute got bit-crushed to hell and back.
When my brother and I were kids, we would compete to see who could make the most annoying sounds. I didn't think anyone could beat my brother, but you could.
I worked hard for this!
Best relaxing/meditation instrument ever.
I am waiting for a full album with only these flutes.
Am I detecting irony?
I would not dare.
You can make a fortune doing covers of popular songs with that! It'll be the next big thing, yes, even better than bad flute playing.
I could...maybe I will!
@SoftserveSodium Don't be pedantic. Read the literal definition of a flute.
Flute (noun)
(musical instruments) A woodwind instrument consisting of a tube with a row of holes that produce sound through vibrations caused by air blown across the edge of the holes, often tuned by plugging one or more holes with a finger; the Western concert flute, a transverse side-blown flute of European origin.
@@lightdark00 In german: Flöte (flute) the word can bei used as short term for flute or recorder. Long term: Querflöte -> flute, Blockflöte-> recorder :-) :-) :-)
As a composer I’m immediately thinking about how I would use this in compositions haha! I want a professional player of these disgusting instruments
Wow I didn’t know there was an acoustic instrument that played dial-up modem sounds!!!
These instruments are remarkably close to a set of instruments I made that I collectively call the Poorly Behaved Tubes. I have done many experiments with squeaker toy insert reeds (like those used in the groan tube). There is an amazing amount of variation and nuance to be found using small reeds like these. The combination of a very small reed and that the reed is uncontrolled (like that found in a wind cap instrument, and unlike the mouthpiece of clarinet and saxophone) makes the reeds extra prone to chaotic behavior. I find this kind of chaos to be different from the turbulence found on turbulence flutes like death whistles, as the behavior is from the erratic deformation of the reed itself, and not significantly from air moving in a turbulent way through the tube.
I also think that long or very long tubes more easily have clear tones that can be distinguished. The only short tubes I have made with these reeds that make clear tones have the reeds controlled through contact with the lips, when the reed is capped it becomes very hard to hear clear pitch from it. Of my experiments, my slide instruments have been the most interesting, and in many ways the most fruitful for unique sound characteristics.
This principle is fascinating! Send me if you have some sounds or videos, I'm curious!
@@NicolasBras I have a video demoing many of them on my channel-
ua-cam.com/video/5Dq7-eeIsms/v-deo.html
Nice!
I thought I only recently discovered you, but now I know you've been living in my dial up modem all along.
You should make something bagpipe-like with four or so of these
this is how u end up in jail
Screaming chicken bagpipe
This sounds terrible... I NEED IT!
how would you tell the difference? lol
Post Bagpipe Video THIS CAN BE DONE!
if you want to emulate the full effect of the reed passing through the tube maybe you can magnetize it and pair it with a handle outside the tube?
That could be an idea!
This thing sounds like a dial-modem playing a Tom Morello solo, its great.
Some of the rhythmical things actually sound very interesting and potentially useful, I'd be curious how they'd sound pitched down an octave in a sampler… Native Instruments should hire you to do a sample library! (Edit: just saw the end of the video, that's going to be some interesting stuff!)
I'm working on this kind of project, coming soon stay tuned!
I'm sure every instrument that ever existed started with "this thing sounds terrible, let's make an instrument out of it" :D
This is an instrument for transcendental meditation
Ok, in what weard dimension do you want to transcend into with this

Me when I try to quietly open the door to the bathroom in the middle of the night:
You are an absolute madman and I am living for it
Thanks!
I never thought I'd see the day where there would be acoustic dubstep.
The montage at 1:59 reminded me of my childhood trying to connect to our AOL internet 😂
1:18 - The sound of my hard drive dying when accidentally running two AAA games on an ultra wide display.
The growl tube is just perfect for modern electronic music though.
I can clearly hear it mixed into some dubstep and/or d&b
I've gotta get me a groan tube for this. It sounds like a dialup error
Finally, a true dubstep instrument!
Right?
It's like someone is beating the hell out of a dial up modem that hates everything
Some of the sounds could be easily in some cyberpunk nightclub
Thanks for sharing. I do like how you explore instruments and sound (even though this one was a little harsh sounding). This one reminds me of the circuit bending where people took old electronic toys and synths are rewired them to make strange sound boxes. It seems that you are doing the analogue equivalent of this. I did find that the circuit benders did eventually evolve some really homemade synths from their experiments and learned a lot from exploring the borderland between music and noise. I am sure you are learning some amazing things even from this harsh sound instrument (maybe an analogue distortion circuit that could be part of a chain of sound transformations that adds texture to a sine wave flute like sound, like the membranes attached to the Chinese flutes). I will look forward to see where all this goes!
Thanks!

My C64 called, he wants his SID chip back!
Wow, someone has finally figured out how the American emergency radio warning/alarm was created!
I did this but with an old wind tube instead of the piping, I also tried attaching a kazzoo so it's before the read, you can kinda play both at the same time. It doesn't sound as good as this though. And yes this does sound good, it has a great electronic sound.
4:30 woah, you've made an english to dial-up modem translator!
2:01 if this triggers memories, you're old.
sounds like you made a instrument that is loading a tape on a zx spectrum, I LOVE IT
I actually love this so much!
2:05 Congratulations! You have become a BBS modem!
It reminds me of an old internet connection, horror movies, some defective electric device and a chicken sometimes :D. Definitely something unique!
This is pure psychedelic. Slap a lot of reverb on it, 16th note gate and you have instant psychedelic.
Thank you for this. It totally made my day. Genius.
3:33 Squeaking door - the instrument.
Now we know what "happened" to you as a kid so you came to make such great PVC Pipe instruments ^^
sounds amazing
play the sounds at 5:00 through an octaver pedal and you've got yourself some rage against the machine solos !
It really does sound like DOS PC speaker music and sound effects.
the really long one is like a trombone from hell, love it!!
This is horrifying. Well done.
Thanks!
It sounds exactly like there’s an Atari 2600 in that pipe.
OMG, now you can play 8bit music live&unplugged!!!
thats acidic af, find the right producer and they can make a rave banger out of this fr fr
5:29 sounds like a cat's soul trapped in an old radio
That experimentation around 2 min mark sounds like connecting to the internet in the 90s
5:07 chicken whistle
Haha! I was given a "Giggle Stick" from some children a long time ago. Used it for some sound effects for theatre.
The director (a Dane) stubbornly called it a "Jiggle Stick", but liked it. Those children have their own children by now, but they knew I love strange sounds.
Finally, a wind instrument perfect for black metal
OMG. I'm pretty sure a violation of the Geneva conventions happened here.
Am I in trouble?
@@NicolasBras Ha! No, as long as you never play it in the car with me, you should be fine. :)
Props for the near perfect impression of a modem handshake
Some sounds are unironically amazing.
I think they are actually interesting!
@@NicolasBras Absolutely! Great content man. Greetings from Argentina!
It’s close enough to a dial up modem that I kept expecting to hear someone tell me that I’ve got mail!
I like how it turned into to jazz, chicken sounds, electronic screeches for a few split seconds here and there
My god I pity your neighbours, and also tip my hat for your thought processes.
1:16 Aztec death whistle
5:40 those silent hill 1 vibes are true man, seriously hahaha
massive weapon for Industrial Hardcore techno 🔥
went from modem to techo to chipmunk lol
now you need to make the worst trombone ever by feeding this with a mouthpiece lol
Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
You can't know until you do!
My son is blowing into recorder way too hard as I type, and somehow I'm watching this. The amount of ear pain is escalating quickly.

5:14 The game title screen music
4:50 that mix of a dolphin and a chicken ist kind of great!
2:10 When you start up your diesel truck on a cold day
Have no experience with music or sound design but some of those sound would make cool robot chatter for a scifi film.
Some of those sound experiments... I kept expecting the Welcome to AOL screen.
This instrument would be fantastic for making a track for an old video game, but mostly the long “flute”! Either way, great vid!
Congratulations, sir. That is a truly awful cacophony!
Your creation has surpassed the oboe as "the ill wind that nobody blows good".
Sounds like a kid throwing a fit in toys r us when they can’t get the expensive Lego kit they want
bruh this looks like a lot of fun
So this is how the 90's internet dialup sound was made...makes sense.
This instrument is most excellent, it sounds like the Doom soundtrack played on a dot matrix printer possessed by a hateful demon
My neighbours love when I play that video on my hifi system
The second one you tried after you drilled the holes sounds good and it sounds like a game soundtrack that I would like. I want to know what the instrument that part sounds like is.
so this is how they get the dialup noises in movies about the '90s internet
My cat jumped in confusion at 1:18. I had earphones on.
Dahm i think you just reinvented The Prodigy
Imagine a duet between this and the Daxophone..
What a sound! Loved the journey through it all!
I came for the worst sound and all I got was flashbacks of the dial up tone...
Hey. Wait this was the sound of the 80th, my ZX Spectrum 48+ when loading a Basic program or the modem of my Triumph Adler in the 90th.
the joint pain instrument
Sounds like somthing from the doom soundtrack
My dial up is broken again but sometimes it becomes this cool beat
