SO COOL!!!! For clarinetists out there, or to anyone who is in to music :3. Linsey Pollak turns a carrot into a clarinet!!! AMAZING. With just a big Thick hollowed out carrot, a power drill, peeler, and a funnel. The carrot is the body of the clarinet. The drill made holes for the fingerings. The peeler smoothed the column of holes. And finally, the funnel was a makeshift bell. :DDDDDD SUPER COOL
I never knew Captain Piccard could play clarinet in such an awesome way. Telepath, Space Captain and now Clarinetist ? I'm impressed ! (seriously, i'm impressed by Pollak !)
this just demonstrates how the basic principals of woodwind instruments work, and it matters not the tube its in.. see in woodwinds, you create a sound of a certain pitch, from fipples in flutes and whistles or from a reed on saxs, clarinets, oboes.. and the sound of the fipple or the reed is changed as the air flows down a tube the longer the tube is, the lower the pitch of the instrument, assuming the same diameter.. the more you cut the length of the tube, the higher pitched it gets... so holes are drilled in the body of the woodwind to release the air at certain positions effectively shortening or lengthening that tube depending on the highest hole you have uncovered so really the body of the instrument doesnt have much to do with the way it sounds, its all about the size and locations of the holes drilled into the tube and the mouthpiece itself
The freshest composition - and it promotes healthy eyesight no less 🎶🥕👀🎶 This is something I definitely could imagine the renaissance man himself Peter Schikele (as the one and only PDQ Bach) doing. 👏👏👏👏
Yes, completely possible (for all who doubt...) The majority of sound is created from the mouthpiece/reed, and just altered in pitch in the body (carrot). Fantastic video!
@MultiSinger1999 if you look carefully, its a sax mouthpiece he is using so there isnt any cork. its called a clarinet because of the key and position he holds it in.
I been a musician al my life, play the clarinet and saxophone, I was looking to get a xaphoon and waisted my life with this stupid video and now I got to waisted again answering to morons like you, black reed, OH MI GOD!!!
The mouthpiece on most instruments is the sound producer, the vibrator of the air. The mouthpiece also contributes to the timbre (i.e. tonal color or quality). The body of the instrument then filters that vibration (i.e. alters tone and contributes to timbre), and the bell (in this case, a funnel) amplifies the sound.
That's fantastic! The idea and the realisation. And it's actual in tune (almost). How you know where to drill the holes and wich diameter they have to have?
He does live shows. I have seen him do it at the Woodford Folk Festival a number of years ago and more than one occasion. Some serious good shit there!
@viva9626 you realize that F# is just the left index finger WITHOUT the thumb and C#/Db has an alternate that is performable on the main holes, as well as D#/Eb. A can be made with an overtone and some embrochure adjustments, and to make G#/Ab you can just lip it down to flatten it...
Yes yes all that beautiful sound funneled thru a carrot. Orange y'all glad you found this video? I wonder how sweet it'd sound honey-baked with a little basil? Okay, serious question: this would make a very nifty bar-trick, but is there a way to pull it off without carrying a clarinet mouthpiece in your pocket?
I just received my bamboo sax from eriktheflutemaker yesterday. Now I want this even more. Hey man you make beautiful music. BTW, Erik's bamboo sax is really nice and high quality for about USD 100. Don't be fooled though it is not as easy to play as I thought. Both Lindsay and Erik are damn good musicians. Thank you so much Lindsay you made my day.
@youngster321 Actually, vegetable instruments date further back than heita3...The earliest I've heard of it was supposedly 1998 by the vegetable orchestra, but really, it deals more about how creative you are in finding vegetables and piecing them together to make certain sounds...
@AgapeWaves and everyone who thinks it's a sax: the mouthpiece does not truly matter (I've put a tenor mouthpiece on a dozen instruments and made it work), merely the bore of the instrument. If the bore is conical (it isn't) it's a sax. If it's cylindrical (it is, the funnel and mouthpiece are same diameter at point of insertion) then clarinet. Also, any experienced musician knows that vibrato from your embouchure is the fast and easy way, but not the correct one. Vibrato is correctly produced
"You wanna join band? What instrument do you play?"
"Carrot"
I play celery
I play the mayonnaise
And I play rubber chicken
That's good cos our Conductor uses a stick.
Mayonnaise. I play Mayonnaise
Can you play the mayonnaise please?
No Patrick, mayonnaise is NOT an instrument.
+Elena Jablonski hahahahaha you make me cry
Any updates? :D
Elena Jablonski YES IT IS GO WATCH MAYONNAISE MEETS BASS
no patrick mayonnaise is not an instrument for the LAST HECKING TIME
I thought you weren't supposed to play with your food ?
He's playing his food, not playing with it.
😂😂😂 Edible Clarinet
HAHAHA that's funny
😂👍
"Why are playing with the vegetables?"
"Because my part is in unison with the the Brass Section"
orange IS the new black...
I congratulate you on being clever haha.
tychodancer ha ha
Nice one
sax mouthpiece gives it a sax feel kinda-
This proves that you dont need a good clarinet to sound good. Just a good mouthpiece.
4vonwarschau more like just a good embouchure and revision. good equipment does not equal more skill.
The good thing with bad instrument is that they make you improve more. Sadly, I've experienced it.
It's a sax mouthpiece tho 😂
I'm a guitar player and not too familiar with the wind instruments, but I can say this has a very high quality tone.
I tried this with some lettuce...didn't work.
😂😂👏🏼👏🏼
Then do some research buddy .!
That's because you didn't _lettuce_ try again!!!!
@XxDuckyUxX//I'm going QUACKERZ heh lol
I GUESS YOU CAN CALL IT A CARRO-NET
That pun was bad and you should feel bad.
Ron Barzilai no, you shouldent...
Jacky Lin I LOVE IT XD
i was looking for this specific comment
Hilarious!
More Vitamin A than any other clarinet!
Dan Tong hahaha true
Vitamin A-Major
Dan Tong so, you're saying it's an A clarinet. rather than a Bflat?

SO COOL!!!!
For clarinetists out there, or to anyone who is in to music :3.

I half expected this to end with him eating the carrot...
Justice Taylor probably filled with saliva
As a clarinet main, I seriously had no words for this video...
do you mean in a good way or bad way :-)
Abigail Ramos a bad way
Lighten up dude...it's a fucking carrot. As a musician I found this idea to be very clever and out of good fun
VerdeKidz Well, I'm a musician too, and I just don't like it.
People reffer to instruments as mains? You sure you haven't been playing too many PVP games?
I had to pay $350 for a clarinet when I could've gotten a carrot instead
had to pay £800 when i could have just gotten a carrot D;
try altissimo tho
You would still have to buy the clarinet
HappyFace Bro... $350 is NOTHING! That’s lucky you could find such a cheap one. My parents found mine for over $1000
Lucky! Euphoniums are $3,000... I have to use a school owned one.
Real "roots music".
Steve Taggart i lold
I never knew Captain Piccard could play clarinet in such an awesome way. Telepath, Space Captain and now Clarinetist ? I'm impressed !

so really the body of the instrument doesnt have much to do with the way it sounds, its all about the size and locations of the holes drilled into the tube and the mouthpiece itself
it would also depend on the bore diameter
Nigga, nobody's gonna read that.
Thank you for taking the time to explain that.
you know you dont need a reed or fipple do you ? see neys/kavals
sat watching a man play a carrot at 3am when i have to be up in 5 hours what the fuck am i doing right now
Wow Linsey Pollak!. Amazing! Thanks for the awesome music.
3:04 Hey, that's not very nice. >:C
But for real, that was the most wonderful timbre I've ever heard from a vegetable.

Thus Carrot Clarinet is totally appropriate for Vegetarians !
@ELsclay I actually noticed that too. It sounds a lot like a Saxophone. Fantastic video and ingenuity, I must say.

simply sensational, is to be congratulated !!
is this true?
Yes, completely possible (for all who doubt...)
The majority of sound is created from the mouthpiece/reed, and just altered in pitch in the body (carrot). Fantastic video!

Apathy ._. uuhm what😂
@MultiSinger1999 if you look carefully, its a sax mouthpiece he is using so there isnt any cork. its called a clarinet because of the key and position he holds it in.
Fake, he didn't have a reed
he clearly has a reed
clatheho wait i dint see it
It's a black reed and it's not fake he has tons of videos where he uses the same mouthpiece.
clatheho No wonder
I been a musician al my life, play the clarinet and saxophone, I was looking to get a xaphoon and waisted my life with this stupid video and now I got to waisted again answering to morons like you, black reed, OH MI GOD!!!

How you know where to drill the holes and wich diameter they have to have?
This motivated me to relearn reed instruments, just so I could try this out haha.
just one word...AMAZING...
This is not fake guys, he is recording himself while he's playing and then playing over the top. It is awesome!
I just have to say one word... WHOA!!!!!
Dude even makes a carrot sound brilliant, wow
didn't expect such a good tone!
Mom says it sounds like a mix of saxophone and a clarinet. i like how you make it and its sound.
Very beautiful music!! Compliments!!
Legend has it he’s still playing the carrot
I made one! Very very fun. The carrots cracked easily, but as soon as I got one that didn't it was FANTASTIC. You are awesome. :D
I like it. Nice earthy sound...
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing.

It's a Rico plasticover reed which is coated with a thin black plastic layer which is why you can't see it
That was a truly organic sound.
I got chills from listening to a carrot...
Yes yes all that beautiful sound funneled thru a carrot. Orange y'all glad you found this video? I wonder how sweet it'd sound honey-baked with a little basil?
Okay, serious question:
this would make a very nifty bar-trick, but is there a way to pull it off

That is very nice I going to make one and see if my son can play it in school Dunn middle school Trenton NJ
