I got an 05 XC90 with the Original T6 engine (2.9L in-line 6 Twin Turbo). It makes 272 HP, couldn’t really hear the turbos but I just put a cold air intake in, and you can really hear them now! It’s a great reliable engine and I have no complaints!
V8 issue with balance shafts was only in first production years and it only concern XC90. Issue was caused by balance shaft bearings. The issue was solved in mid 2005, so all MY2006 models with V8 should be ok. Everything with chassis number greater than 212032 is 100% without this issue. S80 V8 didn't have this issue, it was only XC90 thing.
@NorthernChev I got one as my daily, a bit costly but the best car i have owned so far. the smooth and effortless power combined with the superb seats makes up for the upkeep.
Golvo vw golf with a whiteblock makes 900hp. You forgot the 2.3. I swapped a b5234t9 from an 04 c70 with a hybrid billet td04hl-22t makes high 300s on stock internals reliably.
As a life long Volvo owner I appreciate your passion fo great cars! I too think the GRM Volvo’s are the most awesome built and to have Scott McLaughlin take them to the winners podium several times proved their worthiness. But don’t forget the Kpax s60’s that campaigned here in the Perrelli World Challenge! I got to see them racing at the Long Beach gran prix and it was awesome to see a five cylinder AWD blow away the V8 Cadillacs was amazing!
Cool Video. I love the Redblock, Been under the covers with them for decades, My own makes 505 wheel @24psi, maybe a bit more now since the compression change, also in a wagon. Your buddy should build that Redblock for sure! You are right about the orchestrated ruckus that the White Block makes, that noise seems to tame the soul, doesn't it? Working on a s60r atm, actually. Enjoying it alot! Thanks for sharing!
The early Yamaha V8 for Volvo (2002 - 2005) had an issue with the balance shaft chamber that didn't have a drain hole in the chamber. Moisture could get in there and the balance shaft would become loose. In fact, it was advised not to do a engine pressure wash for this very reason. It was labor intensive even to fix a loose balance shaft. These V8s are found in the XC90, again 2002 thru 2005 models. By the time the V8 was available in the S80 (beginning with 2007), the issue was corrected with a drain hole that was incorporated in the chamber design.
The 4 cylinder in my 1971 Volvo 144 was (pardon the over-used expression) bullet proof. Had 300,000 miles on it when I sold it, and I never did anything other than routine maintenance on it. had to keep the SU carburetors tuned, and the points were constantly needing adjusting, but nothing ever broke. Wish now I still had that car.
My wife’s 05 S80 Premier has more options than you can shake a stick at. This includes the T6 engine. This T6 is the 2.9 liter, in-line, twin cam twin turbo engine. It puts out a bit less than 300 hp stock. It shocks the guy in the other lane at a stop light. Especially when you light up the front tires.
Technically the 6 cylinder you mentioned *is* a Whiteblock. Redblock versus Whiteblock essentially means (old) iron block engines versus (newer) aluminium engines. Formally, the Whiteblock is known as the Volvo Modular Engine. It was designed to be available in 4-, 5-, and 6-cylinder configurations, and be mounted in either transverse or longitudinal platforms. As others have pointed out, the engine nomenclature for the Whiteblocks actually made a lot of sense and gave a lot of information. So now you can break down what the names mean, one of my favourites is the D5244T (particularly the D5244T22). It was a 5-cylinder Diesel, 2.4 litre, 20v turbo which produced 220 horses and 310 ft lb in stock form and can be easily modded for much more power. Those things pull like a train!
We had the 180 hp D5's as taxis. You couldn't notice it having less power after 600000 km. But you had to top up oil often at that point. Just scrape out the soot from the EGR valve when it gets sluggish and thirsty before the check light comes on.
YES my twin turbo D5 feels and sounds fantastic yah it only makes about 230hp with the polstar tune but the torque is awesome close to 500Nm definately throws you in your seet from a 0 start and sownds way diffrent from anything on the road
FYI, the B6XX4X series are also whiteblocks. There are also three generations of whiteblocks, the original B6XX4X and the older B52X4X are N-series, with the turbo editions having the oil squirters feed from valves behind lids on the side of the block, and typically all had hydraulic lifters. RN-series got the new intake port style, VVT, mostly solid lifters and squirters mounted internally. On the 5 cyl. most things are interchangeable, between N and RN except the cylinder heads, which got different oil-return pads. On the 6 cylinder most anything is interchangeable between N and RN-series. The RNC whiteblocks, the 6 cylinder became its own thing with internal timing gears at the rear of the block, and selectable lift valve train in addition to normal VVT. The RNC five cylinder I'm not shure of how much, if anything, is interchangable.
The D5's are really popular in Europe. Strong, Powerful, Tuneable, and most consider them to be BULLET PROOF! Not quite as smooth as a straight six, but they make a great sound. It is also not uncommon to encounter D5's that have done 300,000 miles or more, and still pulling like a train. Just make sure to keep the oil and coolant changes regular, no more than 10,000 mile intervals for the oil, and 30,000 between coolant changes, and 50-60,000 for Cam belt, water pump and tensioners. Check the EGR and Throttle body for carbon build up, as well as the intake every 50-60,000 miles, and clean them. Also check the swirl flap assembly fir wear, these may need to be replaced too at some point. And it goes without saying that ALL diesel engines will encounter DPF issues, especially if used for short trips constantly, so keep that in mind, you may have to remove the DPF to give it a thorough clean at some point. But with regular TLC, the Engine should outlast the rest of the car, unless you are OCD about detailing.
@@Phae576 my current d5244t5 is not a white block and I have owned two of them, neither are white block and are low powered, possibly a UK market thing ?

The older 2.3 5cylinders. White block. B5234T. Replace the conrods and pistons and build from there. I have all 4 engines of the list you mentioned except the newer one. You are correct on the v8. The older ones with the red dipstick. The newer with yellow dipstick were modified by volvo. But still an issue and a pain in the ... to check.
Not forgetting the B5234T3 in the T5's 2319cc. This engine was bored out to 2.4 and to 2.5, however the v70r 2.5 needed shimming to stop cylinder wall cracking so much better to use the 2.3! A simple remap can take this engine from 250BHP up to 326BHP
Exactly! I was going to say same - 2.3 T5 best option for 'reliable' / robust option to start with! 2001 pre-facelift V70 with it and Aisin auto box may feel sluggish at times and strained by that transmission, but still makes me smile in stock 250BHP / 2 tonne car. I really wanted 'R' but the prices never got down enough and never will, so V70 T5 was the only option, 3 years on, few things fixed and I still got it with 250k+ miles on the clock.
I have a V50 2.4i gasoline from 04. The 27th I'm getting it tuned. Will go from 140 to about 185 hp :) The sound inside the cabin is awesome, but I don't think ppl outside get the same good growl :(
Oh really cuz I have a s40 2.4i making 168 hp with 170 torque & I’m finding ways to add some power I mean so far the only performance mod I added was the exhaust
The naming scheme you were confused about is quite easy to read B for Bensin, 6 for cylinders 29 for displacement (2.9) and 4 for valves per cylider, the following letters are more specific information about the engine like T for turbo or other letters and numbers to remark revisions of the engine, my S90 has B6304FS2, gasoline powered 6 cylider 3.0 litre 24 valve engine
Why was I thinking B20 I had in my '69 144. Cos I'm really old, that's why! Anyway, gotta get my '97 T5 wagon sounding like that,It's quick enough for me,just needs that sound.
yeah i surprised that the B20 didn't make the list, ok they won't really give more than 200-250 hp but with some new oil and spark plugs now and then they literally last forever and with an m40 gearbox after you got a bulldoser!
I bought new and Love. A 2012 T6. It is truly an amazing ride Fast. In Sport mode it’s very quick. The interior is comfortable but it is a drivers car.
I drive a B5254S which is a naturally aspirated 2,5L 5 cyl volvo engine. It doesn't output a lot of power but the sound sure is amazing. Pure NA sound is even better than a turbo 5-cyl sound imo.
I have a 97 960 3.0L, I6, 24V, 181HP white block B6304S and it is one of the smoothest running engines Volvo ever made. I can get 28-29 mpg on the highway at 65 mph in a 3600lb car that has a .36 Cd. The thing people never realize is the 2.3L Red Blocks along with the 850 and S70 93-99 2.3L to 2.5L five cylinder white blocks and the 95-98 I6 white blocks are also able to easily last over 250K miles with routine maintenance. FYI stay far away from the pre 1995 I6 white blocks they have casting issues. The 1995 and up I6 white blocks are solid motors. You were talking about using a Volvo motor in a project car, I got a wild one for you. Since I stand taller than six foot it will never work for me the car is too small, but if you're under six feet tall think about it. The car is a SAAB Sonett III, two seater, fiberglass body, four speed, FWD that weighs in around 1800-1900 pounds. Think about the weight to power ratio with a 200-300 HP Volvo engine under the hood? They came with a Ford V4 under the hood making around 110 HP. A number of owners of these Sonetts in the seventies and eighties stuffed V6's from Ford Capri's in them.
Regarding Redblocks.. Look for the Jens Gustavsson Dyno test engine. Stock pistons, 8 valve head, close to 1000hp Some things I like: -Easy to find and reasonably cheap - There isn't some variant XYZ which is the one you absolutely need to make power but is unobtainium. -High quality - Its very likely your 300Kkm block still has more than enough life left in it to make reliable double+ stock horsepower and rebuilds are a rare occurrence. Studs don't break etc. -Many of them are turbo charged and already making decent numbers in stock form - you're not starting with a weaksauce engine to start with when swapping or modding -Even the NA variants are stout and share many things with the stronger versions - I have been running a B230F+T at more than double the stock B230F power level for over a decade now and the engine just takes it with ease.
2005 to 2007 XC90s were the only years the V8 had the problem with the water. In the 2007 V8 S80 it was fixed. The transmission is the weakest point in these cars. Mine started slipping at 170xxx. I read that a cooler does wonders for it though. I sold my V8 S80 but plan on getting another one for a build in the future. It’s my favorite engine of all time.
Do you think if you just kept the fluid good in it that itd be okay or does it get hot either way and need a cooler? In 2008-2010 different transmissions? Are they any better?
Volvo states It’s suppose to be lifetime fluid but I think lifetime to Volvo is ten years but anyway I still would change it at least every 50,000. Some say don’t touch it. I’m no expect so do your research. That’s not the problem though the valve body is known to be break down and need replacement. Not sure why maybe because of the powerful V8.
My dad's V8 XC9's transmission started slipping at 94,000 miles (it spent most of its life in the Boston suburbs, so it probably shifted a lot. It goes into 5th at 35, so I do mean a lot). That trans sucks. I hate it with a passion. The gears are way too long (3rd is good for over 110 MPH), shifts take ages, and the programming forces it into the highest gear possible ALL THE TIME. The efficient tuning is what kills them I think. Slips the hell out of the converter clutch on each shift to try to be "smooth" when shifting into 3rd at 1300 RPM at 15 MPH. Burns the clutch and heats the fluid up like crazy. It's a bummer, because the rest of the car is so good. That engine is amazing. Screams like it belongs in a sports car. Has anyone manual swapped a Volvo with the V8? I mean, the TF-80SC was offered alongside the M66 manual on the S60R, so theoretically it might be possible?
Trying to figure out a Hybrid 3.0/3.2 VVT+VVL turbo build in a P3 XC60. Putting the 3.2 VVTL head onto the 3.0 block and controlling the VVL cam profile with a Hobbs switch at 15psi boost
I have a question, I want to turbocharge my volvo and i have a volvo 850 2litre wirhe 126 hp. How much boost/hp can this engine handle with high reliability? 300-400hp would be enough. Thanks in advance!
the B5244t5 is much better than the 4t4 found in the R, seems like alot of people in the volvo community are still blind to the capabilities in stock form. They can handle upwards of 600WHP. if you go on the forums there are some people making higher Hp on these engines. One of my friends from the other side of the U.S. Is currently making 530whp on his S60r with 4t5 swapped in. The engine is stock.
I’ve got a couple questions that hopefully you can answer: I’m the 2nd owner of a 2002 XC70 with the B5244t3 engine. I’m looking to get more power for the wagon, but before I begin, is this block a good starting point for that goal? Also, in regards to the type R v70... I ran into a wrecked v70 type R and the exhaust was still attached to the body. Would it mate, or would it be beneficial to pick up to the 02 XC70 ? Thanks a lot 👍🏾
The 6 cyl is a whiteblock so this list has a bit of redundancy, I'd modify "whiteblock" at the last spot as the "5 cylinder whiteblock". As for those, if you want to build power, not just any 2.4L will do. You need to find one with an 81mm bore. The 2.3's all have this, you can swap in a crank with a longer throw if desired, or seek out the 2.4L with the 81mm bore which already has the longer stroke and slightly higher compression, but they're much harder to find. FCP Euro already commented the specific engine number for anyone interested.
I’ve got the 2.0 v60 polestar, as much as I love the immediate power and snappy trans in it. I miss the sound of the 3.0 I had in my previous Volvo. I just couldn’t beat the price I got my polestar. Learning the maintenance nuances involved was a bit of a hurdle but overall I’m happy. I do think I’m going to get that beautiful 5 cylinder v70R if my car ever gets smashed. That sound is legendary, and even more utility with a bigger box. =)
with even modest upgrades we are making 400whp on NORDIC dynos without all fancy "compensations" and writeups that i find most american dyno operators like to use, with stock-ish internals with the remapping of the STOCK LH2.4 engine management system here in Sweden . bigger turbo , bigger injectors, modified mafs and massive intercoolers and reground/reprofiled stock cams. The stock block redblocks are around that make 800+ uncorrected WHEEL horsepower ..... (i have found that most imported cars from your side of the pond doesnt live up to its powerclaims in our dynos over here....)
Drivin the V70I with a 2.5 LPT (193hp). Never let me alone - absolutely reliable and needs almost no care (oil change every 15.000km). 300.000km on the clock now and will do another 300k for sure.
Check your PCV system. I've got the same car with the same engine, 281 000 Km and I love it. Burns e85 ethanol with no conversion kit. The only problem I had was the tranny I had to change because of the lack of fluid flush of the previous owners.
I read somewhere that the 2.9tt straight six out of the P2 S80 and XC90 was built by Porsche. Don't know if that's true or not, and someone who knows more about these engines could probably shed some light on this, but it would be really cool if it were true.
I'm pretty sure your right it is true that the straight six in those were built by Porsche i could be wrong though but i know for sure porsche had their hands on some straight six in the volvo line up
I was hoping to find out if the 6 in a 2014 CX60 is more reliable than the 4 cyl+turbo in newer models. I'm afraid of small (Under 3 liters) engines and turbos...don't think they will last.
I would have thought the P1800 with the B18 and over 3 million miles on the clock might have figured in the list. The engine was stripped down at Thatcham Research Laboratory in the UK and found to be the original engine. This engine will also take a supercharger,no problem.

Hey Chad. I love my c30 t5 engine best. I had the 1.9T4, tuned it 300hp but I love the T5 more. Did you check you chassis number with the master cylinder/ clutch spring kit recall? If it's an 08 it should be covered by the recall. I had 2x 07s t5s and had to change master/slave cylinder and return spring kit my self. Change the master cylinder first ( under sterling wheel) and spring return kit AND THE BAR TO THE SLAVE. if it doesn't fix it you need to change slave and clutch. I've done clutch, slave master and return kit on my current c30 t5. Pedal still droops when sat for a day. I pull up when I start the car, and then it stays returned

I'm surprised you didn't mention the P1800S's B18 I4/B20 I4 engine which still holds a world record breaking 5.14 million km (3.2 million mile). TBH I'm not exactly sure if it has the B18 or the B20, I do know it was a P1800S though.

What about the 5 cylinder 2.0 T engine, would that not have stronger cylinder walls than the 2.3, 2.4 and the 2.5? would that potentially be a good platform to build on..
You mentioned that the 2.4 is over engineered. Which variant of the 2.4 are you talking about? Wikipedia Volvo modular engines shows a range of 2.4L engines. Only asking if it applies to my factory NA s40 2004 2.4L?
I ran across this video looking for a swap for my 88 Fiero, I am looking for a great transverse mounted engine and trans combo. I recently purchased a V60 for my DD with the 2.0T that I am impressed with, and I was thinking maybe the older 2.5 from the P2 cars, how tunable are these, will they need a aftermarket engine/trans management system?
The redblock is the best Volvo engine in my opinion, I have 2 245 and 3 v70 wagons, in terms of best all around redblock all day. I have had an easier time working with and driving the redblock than the t5 due to the fact that the t5 can have really weird problems sometimes but I cant deny the beautiful sound the t5 makes. Also v70 with the all wheel drive system really just turned me off of the v70 because they suck to work on (not the engines fault but still a turn off). The redblock is easy to work on, very fuel efficient, nice on the wallet with how cheap it is, and who doesn't like a good ol' redblock especially with the turbo. Fun tractor sounds

I own an '07 B5244T5 s60 160 000 miles on it, still running strong. 310 hp is enough for me. Stage 1 BSR, I hope to make many more miles with it.
Those things pull like a train!
shame that a mere 210hp 2.5T whips that engine in terms of acceleration
Fantastic video - great info packed that then spurs great discussion below!!!
What about the volvo d5244t5 it was 5 cylinder diesel that was very reliable and good at towing. It was an overallgreat engine.
that is a whiteblock engine

I have a 2005 V70 T5 with factory spoiler, had it since new and up for sale currently. It made #1 in the Volvo engine list 🙂
Great Vid! I think the 2.3 B5234T3 should have been mentioned during the Whiteblock section!!
But still an issue and a pain in the ... to check.
I have a 2005 volvo v70 2.5t with 334,600 miles and i love the way it sounds and most people try to race and loose
Nice you put my cars engine in the top category
I have an even older redblock in my 244, the B20 :D
Best engine ever, have one in my Volvo pv. Har en i min pv😍
The best engine is v 2,3 Redblock.

Oh really cuz I have a s40 2.4i making 168 hp with 170 torque & I’m finding ways to add some power I mean so far the only performance mod I added was the exhaust
@Nevin MUSCLE i dont think the exhaust will do much. Maybe optimizing the air intake might give some :)
I agree with your list. I love my -00 v70n 2,4T. I love the sound that it makes 😍

Yeah, the good old B20A. Same engine was used in the '75 Volvo 242 I had many years ago. It was slow, but indestructible.
yeah i surprised that the B20 didn't make the list, ok they won't really give more than 200-250 hp but with some new oil and spark plugs now and then they literally last forever and with an m40 gearbox after you got a bulldoser!
Fun rumour: it is said that the B18 had more crank bearing area for its 65 HP than the Ferrari V12 of similar vintage.
May I ask how much more power can a stock B5254t4 engine squeeze? To be in safe perimeters.
The b5244t5 is the best 5 cylinder Volvo engine Volvo ever made. People are making 500 horsepower on that motor swapped in from the junkyard untouched
5:08 P1 Volvo v8 engines had that issue, P2 and P3 engines has no issues, They drilled a hole to drain the water...
Regarding Redblocks.. Look for the Jens Gustavsson Dyno test engine. Stock pistons, 8 valve head, close to 1000hp
Some things I like:
-Easy to find and reasonably cheap - There isn't some variant XYZ which is the one you absolutely need to make power but is unobtainium.
-High quality - Its very likely your 300Kkm block still has more than enough life left in it to make reliable double+ stock horsepower and rebuilds are a rare occurrence. Studs don't break etc.
-Many of them are turbo charged and already making decent numbers in stock form - you're not starting with a weaksauce engine to start with when swapping or modding
-Even the NA variants are stout and share many things with the stronger versions - I have been running a B230F+T at more than double the stock B230F power level for over a decade now and the engine just takes it with ease.
The B8444s balance shaft problem was fixed at the end of ‘05. FCP euro has a write up about it with the engine serial numbers and everything.
There’s a thread about the issue with firsthand reports in the XC90 section of Swedespeed as well.
The 5cyl noise is why i got my s60r. Cant disagree
Yamaha also helped Toyota develop to 2ZZ-GE used in XRS Matrix and Corollas, as well as a couple Lotus vehicles.
Trying to figure out a Hybrid 3.0/3.2 VVT+VVL turbo build in a P3 XC60. Putting the 3.2 VVTL head onto the 3.0 block and controlling the VVL cam profile with a Hobbs switch at 15psi boost
What do you think about 2011 XC60 3.0 T6 engine? I know nothing about volvo, but I am loving those suvs with 300 hp
Lots of torque....lots of upgrade of power potential...should you want more power
I have a question,
I want to turbocharge my volvo and i have a volvo 850 2litre wirhe 126 hp. How much boost/hp can this engine handle with high reliability?
300-400hp would be enough.
Thanks in advance!
There's a VW Golf floating around on here that has a 2.5t white block. It's AWD too. Friggin awesome!
the B5244t5 is much better than the 4t4 found in the R, seems like alot of people in the volvo community are still blind to the capabilities in stock form. They can handle upwards of 600WHP. if you go on the forums there are some people making higher Hp on these engines. One of my friends from the other side of the U.S. Is currently making 530whp on his S60r with 4t5 swapped in. The engine is stock.
I’ve got a couple questions that hopefully you can answer:
I’m the 2nd owner of a 2002 XC70 with the B5244t3 engine.
In Sweden it’s normal to put T5 in a 940 or 740!
Yes! Build a Miata with a 5cyl Volvo engine 😍

I agree but I am a little bias toward the inline 6 turbo. Its smoother than the inline 5 and stronger. It just doesnt sound as good the inline 5
with even modest upgrades we are making 400whp on NORDIC dynos without all fancy "compensations" and writeups that i find most american dyno operators like to use, with stock-ish internals with the remapping of the STOCK LH2.4 engine management system here in Sweden . bigger turbo , bigger injectors, modified mafs and massive intercoolers and reground/reprofiled stock cams.
The stock block redblocks are around that make 800+ uncorrected WHEEL horsepower .....

Check your PCV system. I've got the same car with the same engine, 281 000 Km and I love it. Burns e85 ethanol with no conversion kit. The only problem I had was the tranny I had to change because of the lack of fluid flush of the previous owners.
