The Volvo B5244S (branded as 2.4) would fit nicely into the 3rd spot on this list, just after the Volvo D5244T (branded as D5) on nr 2. The B5244S is a 2.4L naturally aspirated I5 petrol engine. It makes up to 170hp from factory and if you take good care of it and do regular services, it'll last you well over 500kkm (500 000km) and some might even get you close to that legendary 1mkm (1 000 000km). The D5244T is made from the same engine block as the B5244S. It's only the parts connected to it which are different. So all in all it's a 2.4L turbocharged I5 diesel engine. From factory it makes up to 220hp and 445Nm of torque when stock and up to 320hp and 570Nm of torque with a stage 3 chip tune, putting it in the ballpark of those huge clunky diesel V8s put in American pick-up trucks which are more than twice the size of the D5 engine. The D5 (as well as the 2.4d which is basically the same engine, but onlym akes 163hp) will easily last you over 800kkm and in some cases you might even get into the 7-digits. Most German engines, including all mentioned in this video, usually give up around 300kkm-500kkm.
Impressive how every video about european cars are made by americans who apparently dont know much about it... Tdi is a Fiat engine / Technology, first Tdi car ever was the Fiat Croma, before Magneti Marelli sold Tdi to VW when they already had the JTD in the final stages of development.
I honestly think that Americans (as well as Canadians) are not that known for being interested in European (or any foreign) objects, so that's the same reason with a number of European carmakers like Peugeot for being absent in the North American market - Peugeot left both US and Canada in 1991 while Fiat has been active there after it acquired Chrysler in 2009, Magnetti Marelli is also owned by Stellantis, MM also supplies parts to Nissan since the latter is owned by Renault, as Renault used to work with Peugeot to develop engines for their own cars before. Fiat's own mechanical parts are going to be replaced by those developed by Peugeot since the establishment of Stellantis, the 600 is the first Fiat to share blueprints with Peugeot, interestingly both Peugeot and Fiat (as well as Renault) are deeply excellent in small cars. Unlike how German brands (except Opel) does, especially, I even realised that Stellantis could acquire Mercedes-Benz despite that the latter has Smart however... (VW could merge with Toyota even the former has already been in bed with Ford.)
Pretty sure the Volvo "Red Block" ? engine had an aluminum head and a cast iron block. At least the 1980 240 GT (B21F) and the 1989 749 Turbo (B23FT) that I've owned, did. Great engines. I bought the 1980 with 121,000 miles. Added at least another 100,000 before I gave it to my brother. Bought the 1989 with 130,000 miles on it. When I got side swiped, It had 242,000. Gave it to my brother, who still drives it
I have removed many Chrysler Slant sixes 225 cubicle inch and have 1 left. There have been a few customers reporting over 500 k miles and no issues with 3000 oil changes. Wes Hill Derry NH
Firstly the valves are not self adjusting, they gave a bug flat shim on top if the valve spring collar which is only adjustable with a special tool that depresses 2 valves to get the shins out then you need a box of vice 240 shims to chose the ones you need
No not at all. But you need a bit of time and car will be out of use for a while. You check the clearences on all valves and write it down. Then for example toyota have on line a table guiding you towards ordering what shim.you need by part number. You don't need 200 or so shims. But they ain't cheap! But on a toyota you only need to set them.once in the engines life, around 80000 km
The Volvo engine in Irv Gordon’s 3 million miler was a pushrod engine and not the overhead can design you showed here. Also the N47 4 cylinder bmw diesel was known for destroying its timing chains. That’s why I bought the six pot.
They can't make money on overly reliable engines. Cheaply made failure prone engines are a constant cash flow. Look at GM, they've been screwing their customers for 30 years telling them their junk is the best.
If Volvo ever made that car (with that engine) again , they would go bankrupt lol. Have you seen documentary regarding it? It’s just insane how thoroughly they tested that engine.

BMW X1 2010 petrol engine is the WORST car engine I ever had and I had many cars in my 40 years of driving. BMW needed new valve steam seals at 80k kilometers; the alternator died at around the same millage; numerous sensors failed; plastic guide of the timing chain ended in the oil pan, numerous seals, the engine is leaking oil everywhere. BMWs are known for leaking oil. Also had to change the cooling system hoses after a hose blew up. Sold it at 100k km after it costed me more than 7k dollars in maintenance in 3 years. Had a Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi and an old Mini before and they never had any serious issues (apart from Honda and Nissan with its failed turbo) even though the mileage of Toyota and Mitsubishi exceeded 300k. This is a propaganda video, says the opposite of reality for BMW. May be BMW was good long ago but not now. Forgot to say that the thing that may be killing petrol BMWs is high working temperature. Check the internet, that is around 100 Celsius. My son summarized it: You can see many old BMWs getting older but you can't see younger ones getting older.

Have you ever heard of the 1.4 and 1.6 MPI engines from Renault? Some of the most reliable engines ever made but everyone wants to be rich and have a bmw😂😂😂
I think those Renault engines were not only shared with Peugeot, but also, they were used by Nissan after Renault acquired the latter, that's why it not only helped the third and fourth generation Micra (aka March outside Europe) to succeed in sales along with their respective platform sharing siblings, but also the Micra (along with Renault-based Nissans) have sold more in sales with success compared to Toyota. (Likewise, Toyotas in Europe are well-known for their bland stylings, as it was also noticeable that the Aygo that Peugeot sold as the 107 and C1 for Citroen was based on an ancient Toyota supermini platform.) German, Swedish and British car manufacturers are not really known for small(er) vehicles, but in all honesty, French and Italian are even though they make big(ger) cars... (But for the French, their executive cars are were only for businesspeople and that was why Peugeot stopped making rear-wheel drive cars with the 505 in 1992-1997.)
I love fiat. The paint is thin, the build quality is mediocore and the fire engine eats good chuck of fuel and it eats oil, but you know what? And the joys of driving 1.4 tjet with output of 150hp is just perfection. I’ll take higher oil and fuel consumption over reliability issues anytime any day.

Hardly any, while hundreds of thousands of BMWs and Mercedes over 20 years old are driving around with 2300 cc to 4000 cc upwards. In addition, the 2.0 TDI has a known design flaw that has led to expensive damage in a high percentage of 100,000 to 120,000.
Volvo (S60 2.0t and XC70 D5) are ultimately the best cars among 19 I have owned. And there were mercedes, audi, BMW, etc.
Any engine can be reliable as long as you look after it aswel as trigger looked after his broom in only fools and horses!
Gave it to my brother, who still drives it
PSA 1.2 petrol Puretech beats all engines on this list.
😁
I have removed many Chrysler Slant sixes 225 cubicle inch and have 1 left. There have been a few customers reporting over 500 k miles and no issues with 3000 oil changes. Wes Hill Derry NH
That VOLVO P1800 was owned by Irv Gordan a University Teacher. The engine was rebuilt twice before retirering to the VOLVO museum.
Opel's c20xe will dance around most of those
Mercedes M 103 3.0 inline 6
Why would they change these it’s ridiculous to change what works. They should make them again
What abput w123 240D engine the best engine, and petrol m110 280e,bmw e30 325i also really good engine, that engines are 40old and better than new ones
Bro forgot m111 kompressor
M54 😊
I think you missed some engines:
BMW M50/S50
BMW N54
MB M103/M104
MB OM605/OM606
PSA HDi
SAAB B204/B234
VAG 1,8
Volvo B52X4
And maybe the Porsche H6 engine with its unreliable ims bearing should not be on the list.
Some volvo cars have more than 1 000 000 km with the engine still good
1.9 TDI is an Audi engine having it's first appearance in Audi 80 B4. Not a VW.
@dzooyk Yes
But Volkswagen owns audi
@@jett6817 Yes, but it doesn't mean they are the same company.
@@lowiqowner1758VW - Audi are like Chevrolet-GMC you know GMC owns Chevrolet and GMC means General Motors Company in this case VW is a GMC and Audi is The Chevrolet if you see VW-Audi since the first days in everything same same cars same look same chassis only different badge Audi makes some sport models and VW makes trucks and vans this is how they collaborate A3 is a golf passat is a A6 or A4 Tiguan is a Q3 its same things Only the PORSCHE make the difference on VW Group Porsche is the great Daddy who owns them All
VW owns Audi...but you're essentially correct. Audi develops all the diesel engines for VAG...Both the 1.9L & 2.0L were great engines IMO...ignoring the hyped political software fiasco, they both ran great, got great mileage...almost forever. Seen QUITE a few with over 400,000 miles and still running.
Even though it isn’t technically a “European” engine, its one of the engine options from Honda that was avaliable on the market, the N22B 2.2 i-dtec engine is another one that can easily reach the 1 mil. Mile club with just regular oil and filter changes.
Yeah, you're right men, that's my engine, even they will pull out all diesels car here in europe spain. Im still with japanese car.
@@jessiretheuropeo8095german engines last much longer than japanese engines
I have witnessed several Fiat 1.2L Fire engines blow the head gasket at very low miles.
Audi 2.5 TDI AEL

You forgot the OM606

1.9TDI is the best
BMW diesel so-so
Mercedes is great
1.9JTD Fiat is decent copy of 1.9TDI
1.9 and 2.0 engines made out of steel are indestructable (unlike new 2.0 and 3.0 aluminium block)
1.9 TDI is not the best. 😂😂😂
Why should the 1.9jtd be a copy of 1.9tdi? Jtd is way more modern and sophisticated due to common ray injection. It has a better power density and emissions rating plus it lasts at least as long as the dinosaur 1.9tdi
so the most reliable engines are diesel which they don't sell in every country
Diesel engines are best 😊
For tractors and truks.
@@marko6706 really, you might want to consult audi about that, they used the R10 TDI v-12 in le mans, and won.
just a week before they said those first 2 beemer engines were some of the worst engines of all time because they werent reliable, wtf? love how they talk about a porsche flat 6 but show a V6 engine.
M47 - 4cyl. Diesel Engine Yes; B47 - 4cyl. Diesel engine Yes 😉M57 - 6cyl. Diesel engine yes 😉
2.4d5 volvo and 3.5-4.2 ajv8 jaguar engines are top tier too
volvo jaguar and landrover as well as astonmartin and mazda were all part of ford before and only the jag v8 was based on a ford while the volvo was its own work
i think mazda tuned them but in reality mazdas were honestly reliable compared to the blue oval and the european brands they used to own before
Mercedes W123 2,4D 7.000.000 km so where is it id this video?
Have you ever heard of the 1.4 and 1.6 MPI engines from Renault? Some of the most reliable engines ever made but everyone wants to be rich and have a bmw😂😂😂
I think those Renault engines were not only shared with Peugeot, but also, they were used by Nissan after Renault acquired the latter, that's why it not only helped the third and fourth generation Micra (aka March outside Europe) to succeed in sales along with their respective platform sharing siblings, but also the Micra (along with Renault-based Nissans) have sold more in sales with success compared to Toyota. (Likewise, Toyotas in Europe are well-known for their bland stylings, as it was also noticeable that the Aygo that Peugeot sold as the 107 and C1 for Citroen was based on an ancient Toyota supermini platform.)
German, Swedish and British car manufacturers are not really known for small(er) vehicles, but in all honesty, French and Italian are even though they make big(ger) cars...
It’ll never leave you stranded, they’re really fucking fun to drive, the car is fucking made for high rev driving. In my small 200k km driving experience i never saw a stranded fiat. And the joys of driving 1.4 tjet with output of 150hp is just perfection. I’ll take higher oil and fuel consumption over reliability issues anytime any day.
I grew up in Serbia 1980s with the 1971 Fiat 128 1100cc 4 speed and 1980 Fiat 132 Mirafiori 2500 5 speed fuel injection DOHC and four wheel disc brakes, excellent cars I always loved fiat

well my 2.0 TDI Transporter T5 has 700.000 Km and i have just changed on him oil and new tyres personally i think VW Is the top engine maker then second is Mercedes
And how many VWs do you still see driving around after 25 years that have high performance? I'm talking about 2300 cc upwards? Hardly any, while hundreds of thousands of BMWs and Mercedes over 20 years old are driving around with 2300 cc to 4000 cc upwards. In addition, the 2.0 TDI has a known design flaw that has led to expensive damage in a high percentage of 100,000 to 120,000. I'm sorry to deprive you of the illusion, but VW is far behind BMW and Mercedes, of which masses of 5 Series, 7 Series, E and S Classes with a lot of displacement and power are still driving around after 20 years without any problems and usually have over 500,000 km on them, which can only be said very, very rarely even of smaller VW engines.
