      I was on my way to write same thing :) the data he says about "few of the were made nad not ton of information" Is not right! It's more Volvo D5 and 2.4D and diesels total then the gasoline T5's and just the standard engines.... Here in Sweden it's more diesels than gas, and you have information about the engines if you want to tune it. Diesel in europe is more common than gas on v70/xc70 xc90. Btw.... My dad had a 07 XC70 D5 it had almost 300k km's on the clock. I drive a V90 D4 now with a tunebox (Promotech) so it should had 245hp /490nm.

    The VW 20v 2.5 or 07k as it is called deserves to be much higher, in its stock form it quite literally is indestructible and extremely reliable, has some tuning potential as NA but also shines when turboed keeping its reliability. I agree but unfortunately the first 3 years of this engine had a subpar timing chain that eventually stretched. I had an early production 2005 Jetta 2.5 that lasted 202k miles before the timing chain finally stretched enough that it ran very rough and stalled when you revved it past 1,500rpm. Despite this, it always pulled hard and never left me stranded. Even when early signs of the chain stretching and the timing was slightly off, it still soldiered on. I dearly miss my 07K Jetta, especially the sound it made. I had both the rear & suitcase mufflers removed and installed a Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator. It made mundane drives exciting just listening to that beautiful 5 cylinder sound come to life when flooring it.

    Its worth noting that Volvos modular engine family also includes i4 and i6 engines and those are equally as mechanically solid as the i5 engines.
    BUT the high hp turbocharged B5254T engine found in 2.5L R model cars have cases of cracked engine blocks. Them being open deck and having just a hair too little material in certain areas for high hp turbo applications creates a weakspot in between the upper portion of the cylinder bores.
    Suboptimal intercooling is also a factor here aswell as detionation (knock) due to low octane fuel and the hot air from the not so great intercooler.
    Its common practice to shim these blocks before doing any power increasing mods.
    The diesels dont have that problem at all their blocks are physically stronger and were cast with more material around the cylinders than the petrol engine blocks.
    The naturally aspirated engines are completely fine too and the 2.4L engine is not affected as far as I know.

    • @GoldenGrenadier
      @GoldenGrenadier 8 місяців тому +1

      I kinda hate how the highest rated 5 cylinder volvo made also has a low cieling for tuning without sleeving the block. You can put better connecting rods in a 2.3L T5 and run circles around the R motor.

    • @TWilldatruth
      @TWilldatruth 4 місяці тому

      @@GoldenGrenadieryep or get a facelift T5 with the 2.4l which uses the b5244t5 engine which is 100% indentical to a R engine except it uses a 81mm bore block just like the original 2.3l t5 engine and it’s the stroke that makes it a 2.4l. The engine also has of course also has slightly smaller pistons due to the smaller bore size versus the R and the only factory fault are the rod bearings. Swap them out for some better ones and you could run a factory engine upwards of 450-500whp with proper supporting mods and tuning. Neither of which will be cheap especially if you’re in America.

      You can make over 500bhp on the B5254 without replacing the liners. Even then, you can get iron liners fitted for £1700 which is nothing compared to the cost of a big turbo build. And then you can make 4 figures with that engine.

    Just want to point out here, that the Vortec 3500 did suffer from having head issues in the early built engines, primarily the ones from 2004-2006. The 3.7 did remedy that issue, but it also introduced other problems, particularly the secondary air injection pump to help with emissions. Not only is that pump discontinued, but its easier and cheaper to get a block off plate and tune the pump out via HPTuners

    There were many versions of the 2.5 TDI and there were two "generations" of it- the belt driven cam iron block and gear driven cam aluminium block.
    The iron block had rotary pump (or commonrail in the VW Crafter van) and aluminium block had PD unit injectors.
    The most powerful version for cars was the aluminium block 2.5TDI in Volkswagen Touareg making over 170hp and 295lbft of torque.
    Iron block is an amazingly reliable engine, regularly pushing 500k km with no issues and is still produced and sold for marine and industrial use.

    *Technicality I know*, but it's not really the firing order that determines what the engine sounds like, it's the firing spacing and the frequency of the firing vs the frequency of crankshaft/camshaft. What's actually really cool about this is you can infer what note an engine will "play" based on the cylinder count and it actually works pretty well. This is where the idea of a v10 playing "the best sound" comes from since it "plays" a major 10th

    I realise this is about automotive 5cyl engines, but the first I5 that comes to mind for me is the Deutz F5L 912 used in the Deutz Fahr DX85 and 90 tractors, and later used in some combine harvesters.
    The tractor did have some issues, but those were with the gearbox and fixed in their later production.
    The FL9 Deutz Diesels are quite reliable, and the air cooled nature meant you only had to keep the fins clean.
    You rarely ever find any Deutz tractor with a FL9 that's below 10k hours, which is also the case for the DX85/90.

    My first car (25 years ago) was "powered" by an OM617 and to this day i would call it "unkillable" if treated like an engine.
    So i am happy with it being S-Tier.
    I am a bit surprised that the OM612 is rated so low, given that cars with that engine are rather sought after even today.
    (old G wagons with the 270cdi are keeping their value pretty good where i live.) And i only heard these engines being praised for reliability. (but that's just me, i'm not a mechanic)

    The VR5 is certainly the most underrated engine in this list. It shares many similar parts with the vr6 as they belongs to the same engine family ea360, and they don't have major reliability issues. The power figure is also impressive as the EA855 produced a similar figure, with technology of 15 years advance, and 0.2L extra displacement. Finally It makes a glorious sound and has more tuning ability than most of the engines on this list including the new Volvo engines. 500 HP is just a rookie number as there are many many pushing over 800 to 1000 HP examples on UA-cam. I don't see a reason to put this in B tier

    11:10 hey i have one in my 80 B2 CD5S, and even it's not like the nervous GTE (same HP) it's so smooth in power delivery. From 1000 to 4000 it's were you use it most of the time, but past 4k the carb (yes it's just before Kjectronic) open even more and there is the 115hp comming quite furiously until 7k rpm.
    In a saloon car under 1000kg with the driver, it's more than enough to rival any "normal" car these day.
    But i obviously would not say no to an Audi 200 180/200hp turbo engine, but C tiere is severe. Plus there were aluminium and magnesium WN block on few rare model to test new alloys for engine block back then, mostly taxis to test relability.

( Water pump , thermostat , spark plugs ) the only issue that was slightly abnormal is the vvt oil solenoid , the factory ones had a tendency of eating the screens over the ports and was replaced with an improved design . The other minor issue is that the balance shafts bearings get loose and boy it's noisy when cold . I should do a timeline chain but I change the oil long before the oil life indicator goes off . This was a recall from gm to adjust this in the ecu . Timing chains are on both ends of the engine and is a pain to do .

    B5254 Volvo/Duratec engine is a very well balanced 5. Great power and torque, good gas mileage, and reliability. However there is one small thing to note, I believe the 2011-2013 era of Volvos with this engine do have piston ring issues, causing oil consumption. This isn’t entirely a huge deal breaker, but it is to be noted. Surprisingly, it is a wonderful sounding engine, not as good as the tfsi or 2.2 R5 20v, but it is very wonderful, especially if you get a quality exhaust system to pair with it. I wish ford still had Volvo, maybe we’d still have another modern day 5 being produced, but with the new head company that took over, 5’s were gone from Volvo since 2015 I believe, not 100% sure but close to that time.

    16:40 I wouldn't call the Audi 2.0 R5 TD's performance figures abysmal in comparison to what was around at the time. To put it into perspective, the '82-'88 built 2.0 R5 TD produces 87 hp and 172 Nm torque (the reworked model from '88-'90 produces 100 hp and 192 Nm of torque), while other diesel cars of that era produced similar figures. For example, the BMW M21D24 from the E30 324d and 324td produced 115 hp and 220 Nm of torque in the td variant and that motor was a 6 cylinder with 2.4l displacement! The VW Golf I & II, Jetta I & II and Passat B2 all had a 4 cylinder 1.6l turbo diesel with 70 hp and 130 Nm of torque. So I'd argue that the Audi 2.0 R5 TD was rather among the midfield regarding power, having an edge over smaller 4 cyl engines in terms of torque.
    And let's not forget that the old style turbos didn't give you the boost in performance like modern turbos do. The older style turbo was more like an add-on for a naturally aspirated diesel to make it produce less soot. This is also clear if you look at the performance figures, where the peak torque is at a much higher RPM compared to the modern style turbos. For example, the aforementioned BMW E30 324td had its peak torque at 2400 RPM (the 324d without the turbo at 2500 RPM), or the VW 1.6 4cyl at 2500 RPM. Compare that to later turbo diesel engines like the VW 1.9l TDI (AGR/ALH/AHF/ASV/ATD/AXR/ASZ, 1996-2010) which had their max torque at 1800/1900 RPM or look at even more modern engines like the Mercedes OM651 4cyl turbo diesel (2008+) which reaches its max torque somewhere between 1400 and 1600 RPM, depending on the variant.

    The Volvo B5244 is a much more reliable engine than your S Tier VolvoB5254. The Volvo 2.5L is often prone to cracked cylinder walls due to them being thin because its a 2.4l block that was bored out to a 2.5L . The 2.4 L has much thicker cylinder walls and does not suffer this same problem. Therefore the 2.4L should be moved up to S Tier and the 2.5L should be dropped down to A Tier.

    Volvo instead tucks a more complicated system away so deep that you have to take off the aux belt, the alternator and the power steering pump just to clean the thing. If you DON'T clean it, it WILL blow the gaskets out of your engine.
