    I've been running a 4790k for the last 10 years and it has handled everything thrown at it. Very surprised at the performance I continue to get, but probably will upgrade next year. For me, it was worth investing in a premium chip like the 4790k.

      Back when parts were resounably priced and segmented. I'm trying to find a replacement for mine and I genuinely can't tell what to get. Seems like a 700 eur system (top of the line) back then is more of a 6k system today, and I can't figure out what would be the equivalent.

      Same here, then in around 2018 I delided it, got liquid metal and placed a noctua cooler on it direct-die, the popular double 120mm fan one I forget what it's called and OC'd it to 4.7, altho later I went down to 4.6 sadly, the silicon lottery was poor on this one I think as it was crashing at certain games and I tried tweaking voltage for weeks to make it stable but either way it wasn't needed the boost from 4.4 was more noticeable than from 4.6 to 4.7. Still an awesome cpu, holds up to this day and I don't really miss anything newer since modern games are meh anyway and I don't have as much time to game as I used to.

      I have a corsair 1000D with two systems in it, my main occupying the mainspace, and then an ITX system at the bottom. This ITX system is my first real "gaming pc". It has a 4790k and a 780ti. I dont see me ever letting it go, it will live on, within my over the top and absolutely wildly overzealous chassis that will stay psuedo pregnant with the first pc that started my journey 🤰

    BUTT...if you use a Radeon GPU, let's say RX 6700 10Gb you get 20-30% more FPS in DX12 on old or slow CPU-s compared to NVidia. Radeon drivers use less CPU basically in DX12.
    My personal experience:
    i5 4690k@4.6, 16Gb DDR3 2000CL10.
    Shadow of the Tomb Raider 1080p HIGH
    RX 6700 10Gb = 111 FPS.
    RTX 3060 12Gb = 88 FPS.

    • @cosmicnebula3023
      @cosmicnebula3023 22 дні тому

      @@getgunnerttv1603 I don't know any guides personally, but I have overclocked an i7-4790K as well as several GPUs, including a GTX 1080 FE model.
      GPU overclocking is far simpler, so i'll start with that. Since it's a GTX 1080, you can use something like 3Dmark timespy (which the demo of which is free on steam) to test stability. I would use some software like MSI afterburner to overclock the GPU. First thing to do when overclocking is max out the power limit. When overclocking, you don't want to instantly try some fantasy overclock like +400mhz on the core. Instead, start at around +50mhz and go from there in 10mhz or 25mhz increments (I do 25mhz increments personally). Run a single pass of 3Dmark timespy and if it goes with no crashes or blue screens, increase the core clock a bit and do it again. Keep doing it until it crashes. If it does crash, go back to the last OC that made a full pass. To fully test stability, I'd advise to then run the benchmark for about an hour to ensure no crashes. If it doesn't crash, you're probably fine. Overclocking the memory is similar, though most cards should be able to do at least +250mhz on the memory.
      The CPU is different. I usually overclock using the bios, so that's how i'll be talking about it. First thing to check is your motherboard chipset, make sure it's either a Z87 or Z97 board (Other chipsets might have overclocking support, but it's not official and generally not very good). If it isn't a Z87 or Z97 chipset, It probably can't overclock. If it is though, you'll want to go to the overclocking section in the BIOS on your board. Here are some important things to keep in mind. The max voltage for Haswell refresh chips is around 1.35v, so I would not go above that if you're attempting to daily the system as going above it could degrade the silicon. I personally stay on the safer side and keep it below 1.3v. Another thing is to make sure you have good cooling for the chip. If the CPU goes above 85C, I would not advise to try and overclock it, or if starts to reach 85C when overclocking, don't push the chip any further.
      With that in mind, here is what I would do. There are a few ways to go about it, but here is what I do. I first set the max Vcore voltage that I want it to be at (for example 1.3v) and slowly increase the all core frequency of the CPU until it is no longer stable. Use software such as Aida64, Cinebench R23, or others to test for stability. I personally use Cinebench R23 and run it for 30 minutes. I would start the all core frequency to be around 4.4ghz (which would show up as a x44 multiplier in the BIOS) and go from there. Keep going until you start to see crashing, blue screens of death, random errors, ect. Once you see the crashing, go back to the last stable clock and you should be done.
      This only explains some of the basics of overclocking, so if you want to know more or do more, I would advise to look around online and see what people say. I hope this helps in your efforts. Also if at any point the system no longer boots properly, simply turn off and unplug the PC and remove the CMOS battery from the board, it'll be a coin cell battery. Leave it out for about 30 seconds and put it back in. This will clear any and all BIOS settings.
      Another warning: Overclocking may damage your computer if done incorrectly, so do be careful.

    It's not a cpu issue, its pcie issue. Tl dr recent games relies on lanes rather than cpu itself e.g. memory and bus operations tanks performance more than actual cpu performance. On well optimized engines this is not an issue. IPC and frequency of 4790k is more than descent unless handy caped by ddr3 or pcie. Since programers are basically trash these days, they need to write more optimal code to avoid unecessary cache operations, that discards cache and forces memory read. Dots are the way to go , always.

Mainly AMS2 GTA V and BF4/5 and all play well at 1440 165hz at max or high settings, FPS in AMS2 is always over 100 on ultra although GTA v needs dialed back a bit for best results. Still a great combo it seems, will hold off on an upgrade for a while longer. !!

    • @NotEvenDeathCanSaveU
      @NotEvenDeathCanSaveU 6 місяців тому +2

      Same here, it's an awesome combination, recently I rather went for an oled monitor than saving for an upgrade, I feel like it's unnecessary still since modern games are mostly unoptimized garbage anyway and the better games that come out are usually smaller or indie-like and a lot more optimized. Not to mention the games hardly look any better than some of the games from around 2018-2019.. most recent thing is the ray-trashing and the issue with it is that if devs make a good regular rasterisation you can't even notice any difference in a blind test, at best you notice better reflections but paying thousands of dollars for a reflections 2.0 engine sounds a bit extreme. Most modern AAA games are just an unoptimized buggy mess with average gameplay and visuals worse than 6 year old games. I am really not planning on upgrading any time soon, I put liquid metal into my 1080 Ti and also on delided 4790k mounted direct-die and that's as much of an upgrade I was willing to make lol. If large corporations they stop sabotaging the game industry and people with passion start making big AAA games again, then I'll consider an upgrade.

    • @NotEvenDeathCanSaveU
      @NotEvenDeathCanSaveU 5 місяців тому

      @@Ibnlaahad5319 there's bottlenecking even with 1080 Ti using 4790k, but not every game shows the same amount of bottleneck, however it's always present in some form with such setup, usually it's better having newer cpu and older gpu to avoid gpu bottleneck, as gpu is usually more important for the game performance. I don't think you would gain that much power with 3070 Ti, esp. with this cpu, 3070 Ti isn't much more powerful than the 1080 Ti, when we talk about raw processing power and rasterisation, not like new generation stuff like for example ray-trashing. According to most comparison sites its only around 30% better, which aint a lot, every time I personally upgraded gpu I had at least 100, optimally 150% higher overall performance. I think it would be better to upgrade the whole rig, you can get fairly good deals for 2-3 year old i7s and the components for it like mobos and ram, I usually see good whole PC deals of people who want to get rid of it but they can't as theres a lot of other people doing the same thing and so prices drop even lower, and I mean like local sales, used stuff, altho 2-3 years is hardly used. As when it comes to gpu, either you stick to 1080 Ti or invest in a new flagship, -80 or -90 equivalent but it's pricey as you can imagine. If you don't mind using DLSS in newer games, which is mostly required to use with high details in modern games on like 4k or in some cases even 1440p to get a good performance on these new completely unoptimized games (which is by the design as they save dev costs and are buddies with gpu manufacturers) you might as well get like 3070 Ti or 4070 but the increase in raw power as I mentioned isn't that impressive vs. 1080 ti. You get 30-50% more raw power but mostly the new shenanigans like DLSS ray-trashing and similar, as you can see I am not a fan of either of these because they were created as a solution to a by them and by game companies manufactured problems. DLSS however is still getting better and better so I do give credit there, tho if they optimized games properly you would never need dlss not even on 4k and if they invested in normal rasterization you wouldn't see much difference between ray-trashing and regular raster, you just wouldn't pass most blind tests in such a case.

      I would do a 4060. There will be a bottleneck, but if you upgrade your CPU within the next two years the GPU should still be good enough to continue gaming after that.

    • @dachness

      RX 6800 seem to be the best value and performance, out performing the 4060. It also appears it would reduce the CPU bottleneck compared to Nvidia driver being CPU heavy.

    I upgraded from an i7 2600k to an i5 13600k. I upgraded my gpu over the years and it wasn't until I upgraded from the 1660 ti to the 3070 ti that I really needed to upgrade my cpu. The 3070ti was just WAAAAYYY to fast for my i7 2600k even with it overclocked to 4.7ghz. When I upgraded my machine, my maximum fps I used to get on the 2600k with the 3070ti became my 0.1% lows on my new machine and doubling my fps at least in every game. The fastest gpu these quad core cpu's can really run is like a 1080ti. Anything higher than that, and you're leaving performance on the table with an idling gpu.

      I know what you mean, but its opposite for me, I upgraded my CPU and memory every few years from an FX 8320 to a Ryzen 7 1700x to now a Ryzen 9 5900x but consistently used my R9 390X for 7 years straight until last year when i finally bought a new GPU, an RX 6800 XT. I went from barely being able to play Halo Infinite with medium on 1080p @60fps to maxing it out on 1440p @90fps. My CPU went from average 15% utilization to around 60%.
      It was like experiencing a whole new world

      13600K with a 3070ti, ur pulling easily over 500 watts if u have everything maxed out and unlimited fps. I keep all my rigs at 60 fps, makes a big difference when I get the monthly bill from Comed 😂

    • @chieftron
      @chieftron 9 місяців тому +1

      @@MrSamadolfo Correct, this machine can pull well over 500w. When running OCCT cpu stress test with small dataset, it can pull upwards of 330w. However, on cinebench r23, the cpu will pull only ~220w. GPU on the other hand will pull 330w. However, I have never had a scenario where both my cpu and gpu are maxed out at the same time. Typically gaming scenarios the gpu is pulling 250-330w, while the cpu is ~50-100w.
      However, I do use vsync with everything so I'm locked i at 60fps @ 4k.

    I have an i7-4790K system. it is not my main system, but it is one of my secondary systems. I have mine overclocked to 4.7ghz @1.28v (it can do 4.8ghz but it requires 1.35v, which I'd rather it not be at, even if it's usually safe.) and the RAM is overclocked to 2400MT/s CL11 @1.61v (Impressive considering they were just random kits I got on amazon). I have mine running on an Asus Gryphon Z87 board, it is also being paired with an Asus Dual Evo OC RTX 2070 Super. Still runs games pretty well to this day and for it being a decade old, it is still very impressive. Great video.

    One thing I do want to mention though is that your results seem to be worse than mine. I have my i7-4790K OCed to 4.7ghz as well, but in cinebench R23 I get around ~5500 points and in games I generally got better performance than the results you got (for example in RDR2 I was over 100fps pretty much all of the time).
    I wonder if it has to do with the RAM configuration? RAM speed and latency makes a decent difference on this platform. I looked in the description and saw the RAM that were you using, which looks to be better than what I am using (though I have mine clocked the same at 2400MT/s, though idk about the CAS latency. My timings are 11-13-13-35.

    Bought a used 4790k in 2016, upgraded to 8700k 2 years later, and moved the 4790k into a living room PC and have been using it regularly ever since. Paired with a 2070 and 1440p MED-HIGH gaming no problem, hitting well above 60FPS on average. Some games do suffer though, The Last of Us and Uncharted have really bad micro stuttering, p sure its the CPU showing its age, but over all I'm very impressed with the little guy after all these years.

    I'm curious as to how well the 8370 has aged compared to this. Many games now use more cores/threads and wonder how it holds up in modern games in comparison. I know games that use less threads will obviously be better but maybe an overclocked 8370 can compete better now than before? Fine wine? If it can get 85 to 90% of a 4790k in modern games, man the untapped potential of FX is crazy

    Mine was bought for BOINC work detecting Earth Killing asteroids.... In a Gigabyte Z87X OC-Force motherboard with four water-cooled GPUs.... Obviously the CPU was water cooled too !!
    A Lian Li D600 case which held two huge 420 mm radiators and a load of 1Tb drives. Over-clocked to 4.4 GHz in ran 24-7 for years scoring me millions in credits on the project I ran.
    It is now in my "daily driver" with a pair of 2Tb SSD's full of anime.... solely used for trawling round the internet for You-tube, shopping and emails, etc. Also have a GTX 1080 in mine with loads of fast memory.
    Sadly stopped the BOINC work due to high electricity costs here in the UK.
    I must admit that this was the last CPU I bought ( for around $250) - but I do fancy a "current gen" Ryzen X3D CPU in a brand new build, but as I don't play games it is hard to justify the expense.
    P.S. My Amiga A2000 still works fine for spreadsheet and word-processing tasks.... purchased to get through my college work in the 1990's.... and of course 8-bit games.
