      That's what I thought too, so I bought suppressor height sights for my Glock/Trijicon RMR setup. But I got my slide back from ATEI this week, and I'm noticing the exact issue James mentioned. At first I had to adjust every draw at the end to find the dot, but It's fixable with minimal practice. I've only done about 100 practice draws so far with it and I'm about 50/50 now. By next week I hope to be able to draw and see my dot in one quick, smooth motion.

    I found that it took about 6 hours of training on my first red dot pistol to pick the dot up immediately as opposed to the iron sights. The key was making sure to keep your head up and bring the gun up to your line of sight. The same as properly using an optic equiped carbine basically. As far as zero goes, mine were always zeroed for 12 yards. I found that distance to be about optimum (9mm) and allowed precise hits up close as well as at distance without having to worry about holds.

    RMR on handguns are the way of the future. Less stress for the eyes more focus on the target, with practice of course.. Definitely superior to iron sights, but iron sights still needed as backup sights.

    With RMR the con list is very very short. All others are fighting for second place. I have a video explaining some tricks for using the optic body for gross sight picture or if an obstruction occurred. Also for first shot. I have a video for that to. It’s the same as iron sights. Turn the dot off. Present to the irons a few reps. Turn the dot on it’s right over the irons. It’s just a little mind game. If you shoot RMRs watch my last video it’s helped me a lot.

    I also struggle with picking up the dot during the initial draw/first shot and I feel like I'm quicker just focusing on the front sight. I'm sure additional training could remedy this but I like the simplicity of traditional sights.

    I’ve been running an RMR for 3 1/2 years. I have three type 1’s and one type 2. I’ve taken them through multiple classes and have fired 50+ thousand rounds total at this point and none have failed me. Everything you said in your video is 100% correct. To practice acquiring my dot from muscle memory, I practice drawing in a dark bathroom with no light. It’s takes lots of practice to get really good, but is worth the squeeze. Lastly, the major PRO that I like is that its works really well with my PVS-14. Also, the RMR06 or the RMR07 are the best ones to get. They are battery operated only and have manual and auto brightness adjustment, though the auto adjust sucks when doing room clearing with a flashlight.

      50+ thousand rounds and no failures? I love RMR's and have them on my carry guns but I have WAY less than 50k through mine and have had a couple of failures. Admittedly it was the Type 1 that I had dot flicker on the 1st shot a couple of times. This was at about 6500-7000 rounds. Sent it back to Trijicon and they put new connection points in and haven't had an issue since. I've heard that many people are seeing failures after about 7500-10000 rounds on theirs.

    • @andy366919
      @andy366919 6 років тому +3

      1sbratton That’s correct. My first one looks like it got dragged behind a truck for a bout 5 miles. I beat the hell out of it in training to see if it would break because if it won’t hold up in training, I won’t carry it. Yes, I had some flickering going on with my first type 1 in the initial rounds but I feel like it was either a tolerance or grounding issue. That being said, I cut a piece of electrical tape the size/shape of the CR2032 battery, placed it on the bottom of the battery between the battery and the slide. Haven’t had any flickering since. I think some of it was a tolerance issue, hence why people were coming out with plates to solve this problem, but I’m not convinced that it wasn’t a grounding out on the slide. Right or wrong, electrical tape solved it and I’ve done this to all my type 1’s and haven’t had any issues with them. Everyone I’ve recommended using electrical tape to have also had good results. I do think the type 2 is probably a better design but I wouldn’t feel like I had a POS if all I had was a type 1.

    James, good post. I’m am an adjunct instructor at Academi an as a point of fact both US Tier One units, which have largely free and flexible weapons budgets and choices for all operators, are moving to red dots. Almost exclusively the 3.25MOA Trij RMR type 2. No operator would be caught dead with a 6 MOA dot. One big problem we seek to correct is over aiming. In other words focusing too much on centering a pistol red dot. We train to see only what you need to make effective hits, but not more. Because a pistol red dot bounces around much more than our Carbine Aimpoint optics, new users tend to be less smooth and rhythmic as they are with iron sights. But we fix them.
    You hit nail on head, for Hostage rescue/CQB where you must use pistol (inside cabin of aircraft which is mostly CAG/Delta) the precision of a red dot is superior to iron sights.
    So just this guys humble thoughts. Keep up your great work James.

In rainy weather you could get mud or rain could limit window visibility, battery could be drained. I am as quick with sights. optic could get snagged on shirt during draw. I think i will just stay with irons.

    I have the XS suppressor height sights (Big Dot) on G19 Gen4 MOS with a Vortex Venom. I pretty much just go for the iron sight right out of the holster and the red dot is there. When I first mounted the red dot, I looked for it, but it messed with muscle memory and I quickly figured out that if you just do what you would normally do with iron sights you will be fine... the red dot is just right there when you look over the front sight post.

    In my experience using them for several years now you hit all the points. Full disclosure is when I was at Bill Rogers my RMR07 failed in the middle of a drill. The glass fell out. Had about 8000ish rounds with it probably closer to 10k. Bill Rodgers is all about the red dots on pistols and sees a ton of them. He said “Yeah that’s about how long they last.” Now I don’t know about the second version but just keep that in mind. Now am I going to take my RMR off? Hell no! So much easier to shoot! Also, when I first started using it I did not have silencer height sights. I wanted to learn the dot. However by adding some XS silencer height sights I was about 25% faster picking up the dot because I had a point of reference to go off of.

    One thing I've noticed is with practice I've become faster with a red dot. I've been shooting since I was ten and I'm 30 now. My whole life I've ran scopes and irons. I was so used to looking for that front sight for so long that my first target accusation was ridiculously slow. I kept going like I was trying to line that front sight to the rear. You gotta throw all that out the window and get used to that red dot. Absolutely not saying don't train with irons. Took me a while to get used to it but love them now. I will always carry with irons though. Maybe once in a blue moon but I'm afraid of the humidity and sweat.

  • @chronicdose
    @chronicdose 5 років тому +1

    @James Yeager : I use Deltapoint Pro on my P10C and on my Shadow 2 and they have had zero issues and they are insanely durable, I'd rack it off a concrete wall. Red dot's NEED training, and there are some things I've observed. I've been in competition and my dot setting was fine, then between stages the sun came out. Next time my dot came up, it was BARELY visible. From now on I've always taken this into consideration based on lighting condition. Also, without training, you will not consistently be able to quickly get your red dot into view, this definitely alleviated by training, or on the DP pro you can get the backup irons and taller front post from Dawson and have co-witness, which can also help you "find that dot" . All this being said, I've noticed ALL types of shooters, as long as they can see the dot, are SIGNIFICANTLY better with a red dot than iron sights. I have never been bothered by dirt and debris on my glass, although I clean it between matches well, droplets of rain do nothing to it's effectiveness. For ipsc speed and targets 7m and below I do not use the dot whatsoever as finding it is a waste of time, as hitting A's at that distance should be no problem with practice. Always keep a spare battery handy in case it dies, and train one handed weak hand especially to make sure you can effectively get that dot visible quickly after a draw and keep it on target during recoil. I have both 2.5 MOA dot and 7.5 MOA triangle. For pistol shooting, the larger MOA is better in almost every way, at least in context of competition and speed of target acquisition.

      The increased Target focus is paramount. Covering someone on the ground with a red dot and being able to focus on them and not the sights is key. Throw a dummy on the ground and try it out. You’ll notice right away what you’re able to see with both eyes open as compared to watching that front sight

  • @VSO_Gun_Channel
    @VSO_Gun_Channel 5 років тому +2

    The problem that I have experienced with red dots on pistols Is that with iron sights you get a sense of the angularity of the device (The pistol) When you shoot a sufficient volume of ammunition the sights Fade a little bit into the background and this angularity plays a role in How Do you engage targets at range with a pistol. Just like when you throw a baseball, your brain automatically calculates what you have to do to get the ball To the intended target, there was no perfect alignment of sights. Translate that back to Guns and you can visualize the Trajectory of that 9 mm round, those sites now I’ll give you another dimension of information, where you are on that curve. Using a red dot sight pretty much eliminates this. Highly niche argument, I know.

Got supressor trigicon s just incase it fails. Got same set up on performance center m&p and Mos glock. I love em but I understand why people don't use them. BUT I say try it. Ya might like it !

    Not finding the dot is just a matter of trigger time. It took me almost a year to get to where I would carry one, I am still maybe a little faster with irons first shot out of a holster. But all the other advantages outweigh that.

    They continue to improve. You hit on something key: transition doesn't come cheap/easy, esp for people with decades of heavy hand gun use under their belts. That seems to me to be the biggest drawback now that they are small, durable, reliable, and there are holsters made for them, off the rack pre-milled slides and pistols, etc.

    This makes me like James Yeagar a bit more. I clicked on the title, thinking I knew what his opinion would be, and he surprised me. Still open to learn and openly admitting something he is not an expert on. A lot of guys in his position would just make shit up and pass off that they were an expert when presented with a subject they were not extremely familiar with.

    I shot a dot in USPSA Carry Optics for about a year before moving to another division. The only issue is that I think that slide mounted dots are still not totally bomb proof. I have had 2 Delta Point Pros go down on me or you can have batteries die or mounts come loose. That is a lot of G's that the moving slides are putting on the optics which a rifle optic does not see. BTW, finding the dot gets easy with practice. You eventually develop a good index for freestyle, strong hand and weak hand. I also found that it was easier to shoot close targets with irons, but dots were better at 12 yards or more and for shooting on the move. I am still not totally sure about a dot on a handgun for defensive use. The handgun is usually the last ditch, "its absolutely gotta work" weapon that has no backup.

    Ok, I'm old. Got that out of the way.
    I learned to shoot a gun with iron sights. I learned to shoot a long bow & a crossbow with no sights. Same with a blowgun. I pretty much always hit my target.
    I learned to drive on a non-syncro 3/4 speed an can still change gears without using the clutch pedal (both up and downshifting).
    While I admit that red dots work (yes I've shot with them) well, I guess for me, its a case of "iffn it ain't broke, don't fix it". And they add to the already high price of the gun. Oh! And if they can possibly break, with my luck, they will.
    If you like them, more power to you. I'll stick my antiquated handguns & keep a sling with a couple smooth river rocks as backup. It worked for David against Goliath 😊

    Not so much of a problem with the RMR, more of a poor choice on my end and lack of forethought with the model I chose. But here it goes, I went with the RMR with fiber optic and tritium, so it has no brightness adjustment or battery option. I put it on my Glock 40 (longslide 10mm), which I carry for bear defense. The problem I have experienced is shooting from an area where the lighting conditions are darker where I am standing and the target it well illuminated by either sunlight or artificial light. The tritium just doesn’t have the power to illuminate the triangle well enough in those conditions and rightfully so. If it did then the triangle would be too bright in low/no light conditions. I don’t worry about it too much because the suppressor sights are spot on. Just my two cents.

      I know yo ur comment is old but perhaps you’ll find my experience valuable. I tried it on my friends Glock a few times and couldn’t see it right away. Practiced the draw about a dozen times and then was getting consistent steel shots at 50 yards. Now planning my own conversion. I think the trick is just to practice a few times and it makes a wonderful difference.

  • @Italy42180

    Ive noticed people who can't find the dot initially tend to be in the habit of not presenting the gun flat to the target. Interesting you mention it was an issue on the glock and not on the canik. Having the dot seems to clean this up after a while with enough practice. Also if you are doing anything funky with your grip or trigger press the dot will let you know immediately so the dot functions as a kind of training aide, but so do irons to a lesser extent. In addition, removing a focal plane speeds things up. Folks who have a hard time making consistent hits on our 100yrd plate do better with the dot, groups on paper improve as well. Yesterday I zeroed one of our customers vortex on his G34 @ 15 yards from a bench rest and the poi shift at 50yds was less than an inch.

    Some use co-witness iron sights with the the RMR 2 in order to see the red dot faster when you draw your pistol in prensitation. I heard using a red dot is so much faster after training your brain for target aquitsition. I would start irons first then red dot second.

    Its a natural progression. Just like on rifle. You can shoulder many different rifles and not pick up the dot with out adjusting your gun or head. A optic can help way more than just iron sights but can also be detrimental. Ive just never understood when people use optics on rifles but refuse to use them on a pistol.

    I only have one pistol that has a red dot. All my other pistols have irons. When transitioning from front sight focus to target focus for the dot it takes a conscious effort. I tend to default to forcing on the dot rather than the target and the sight blurs. Just my 2 cents.

  • @ridgerunner4277
    @ridgerunner4277 5 років тому

    If I went RMR or any other optic on my handgun for that matter I would have a few cons. I would have to adjust and train to use it because of so much time on iron sights . Another con would be I like my guns to be universal across the board. On duty I carry iron sights on my weapon and I can’t change that so I would have to cross train myself to use irons at work and a optic for my personal carry gun. But my biggest con would have to be my holster collection. None of my holsters ranging from Vedder, G-Code, Tier 1 Concealment, and SafariLand are optic compatible. I’d literally throw away hundreds of dollars worth of holsters because they are about impossible to sell and buy new ones to fit my optic. So cross over training and losing money for gear I would have to stop using to accommodate the optic would be my biggest cons.

    1. You would need to keep the red dot on ALL the time and the possibility of the battery running out when you need it most. I did some initial digging and have heard mixed reviews about the battery life.
    Obviously you would have iron sights to fall back on if the battery did fail. That leads to issue number 2.
    2. Your sights red dot fogging up (I know he mentioned it). Now you can't utilize you red dot OR your iron sights and until you fix that you have a really expensive paperweight.

    • @destinationoff-road5242

      Battery life is a problem with some of the sights out there but the rmr is not one of them..I change my battery once a year and have never had a problem..as far as fogging it can happen especially if you carry OTWB or in a duty holster but inside the IWB with the gun against your body it not to much of a problem in the summer..in the winter there is a better chance but if you treat the lense with anti fog solution you midagate most of that

    • @1sbratton
      @1sbratton 6 років тому +3

      Battery life is a non-issue like the others stated if you're using an RMR and that's the only one I'd recommend. You also will want to put in time learning to use the body of the optic to shoot off of if you loss your dot for some reason. The RMR makes it real easy by using the "owl ears" as a reference aiming point. Pretty easy once you try it.

    Totally impractical for me besides a range toy, but I had a Glock 41 RMR cut and put a decent red dot sight on it. It was a freaking tank with a 5 inch slide and brick grip and 3.5 pound trigger but, it started to grow on me. Only handgun I owned at the time because the base model was given to me by a family member and I kept building and doing ridiculous things to it, lol. Got my senses about me and traded it for another gun that I EDC with now and I regret not getting another RMR cut slide.
