PalladiumCupcakes it’s funny how relevance works. I’m guessing this was made around the turn of the century when the internet was still relatively new and tv was everything. Now it’s the other way around. The internet is the main hub for news and entertainment and tv companies are going out of business.
There was a dotcom bubble burst though, so I think they were commenting more on that. Then again, I think most people around the turn of the century did not quite anticipate how much the internet would take over.
For me personally, I feel the show was still overall fantastic up until shortly after the movie. Sure, it may not have been as amazing as the original couple of seasons, but it was still hysterically funny and wholesome. I think the true decline of the Simpsons began with the episodes "The Greatest Story Ever D'ohed" and "The Good, the Sad and the Drugly." I however think the worst episode of all time is "That 90s show" because it tried to retcon 2 entire decades of content and that is when the show suddenly became fine with rewriting things like Marge and Homer's first meeting. As of now the show is imo completely unwatchable, we live in an era now where people are such pussies that things that 30 years ago or even 10 years ago would have been considered funny are now offensive. We live in an era where the Simpsons have taken Apu off of the show. A beloved character, who had always been an important family friend to the Simpsons family. Because apparently Apu is a "racist stereotype." I don't see anyone bitching about Willie, Smithers, Selma or Chief Wiggum being negative stereotypes. If Apu hadn't been brown, he'd still be on the show. Literally just spitting facts.
This is some good stuff, both the jokes and the commentary. And you know what the key is? It's the show keeping up with the times and being topical. _That_ was one of the big things that made older Simpsons seasons work so well, *not* absolutely everything staying the same (including some existing modernizations at the time being reverted) save for token efforts at modernizing that are mostly veiled middle fingers to the idea of changing. Which is how Al Jean runs the show.
