      I think an interesting part of that function is just that the show went on too long for a Vietnam veteran to be relevant. The much younger nam vets are what, in their 60s? And although it’s never explicitly stated I think skinner is meant to be in his 40s/early 50s at the oldest. I guess that’s what happens when a show goes on for 20 years too long lol

      The joke is that it initially sounds like he’s going to describe something awful, or say that they kept him near-starved as a prisoner, as a standard horrors-of-war story. But the stew he describes sounds delicious and hearty, so it sounds like he was treated well, and is instead obsessed with trying to re-create the recipe hears lager.

    • @GroundThing
      @GroundThing 3 роки тому +29

      @@qmmaru8235 I'm not sure what's not getting across, but I'll give it a go: the "thin stew" is essentially most likely a type of Pho, or a variety of Vietnamese soup that is, to my admittedly subjective palette, quite tasty. The humor comes from the fact that there's a trope of POWs talking about their harsh treatment while being POWs, and at first, along with the beginning where he refers to it as a "thin stew" makes it seem like he's talking about being fed gruel or some similar unappetizing dish, but it becomes clear, as he continues speaking, that it's actually something enjoyable, culminating with the punchline that Skinner's real gripe isn't with his treatment as a POW, but rather that nowhere in America can he find a place that "get[s] the spices right" for the dish. So it's not his treatment as a POW he struggles with, but rather that he can't get the same food in the states. IDK if this helps, since usually explaining the joke kills the joke, but maybe this makes it make more sense.

    I miss the old Skinner ; I used to love how he used to be a half badass half mindbroken veteran , I liked the way he used to be Bart's opposite as in being extremely disciplined and respectful of the rules while at the same time managing to keep up with him to try and make him become a better student and person .
    I adored the subtle satire about public school as an institution the government never cares about and how he desperately tried to make it look like all was fine and under control in front of his superiors despite the fact it was never like that...and most of the times it wasn't even his fault .
    Sure , you could get a glimpse at his bond with his mother or with Chalmers but it wasn't as obnoxiously recurrent as it is now . It feels as if his interactions with those two characters now became all his character is about and that made him become rather pathetic...not to talk about how much these interactions have changed through the years becoming more and more absurd and comical rather than keeping some realism that made them be funny cause they felt relatable or true .
    It truly feels as if his character de-evolved during the years rather than get some developement .

      The phenomenon you're describing is called Flanderization, when one notable characteristic of a character becomes their main and only characteristic.
      Ned Flanders being its namesake, trope namer and most notable example.
      It started with him being a man of faith, trust and law, the polar opposite of Homer. With time and the increasing amount of cast members/episodes, the more nuanced characteristics of his personality were diluted into the maniac Religious nut we have today.
