I remember watching this back in 2008 when I was just kinda coming into the gothic scene, I'm now 28 and still in the goth scene and I'm proud and happy to be still in it :) Love it all and this always brings a smile to my face, he doesn't judge anyone like other documentaries do.
I like how thoroughness of this clip. The music was actually appropriate. Depeche Mode, Voltaire, The Cure... Pretty much hit the nail on the head. At least for me. ;)
Be who you want to be and dress how you want to dress. I know how you feel, I spent 4 years trying to fit in and in the end I thought sod it, I now dress how I want to dress and not how society tells me to. I've had abuse thrown at me and have been attacked but when these people realise that it doesn't matter what they say or do you aren't going to change they'll probably leave you alone.
In Turkey people are still afraiding of goths gothic style etc. I would like be there and taking some photographes. Greetings fromTurkey to all of you :)
This is brilliant short film. Immaculately shot and directed. Flawless editing. Good to the production team cover the Goth story in a serious manner. Too many times journalists just take the piss. Some of you (none British viewers) may not know that The Culture Show is a BBC Television programme.
ive been to whitby and it is such a lovely place! i love the people there! if you want to go to goth weekend some people have to book a place in a years advance to be there.!
The good old days of WGW. We did not stat going to 2008 which I think was the start of its decline. So wished I had gone years ago. Now just full of Steampunks and weekend Goths.
That was good report - It's nice to see us portrayed postively for once :) BTW I work for Angel Clothing and if you look very closely at the football shirts you'll see our logo there, as we're the new team sponsors!
ahh, good memorise, i went there one year and it was extrodinary, i brought all of my vampire books, as well as movies (but i watched The Lost Boys most of the time), i loved the dancing as well, it was such a fun night, i can't wait to go again (yea works slow for nw so i can't afford it), anyways, cheers my friends, God bless, and remember, there's "no time to cry" =D, you know you know what that is from =D
I love that he was so open mindedcto try it AND the makeover was actually decent so he could really get a feel for the scene without it being fancy dress!
I would say if there was any common thread among goth individuals, it would be pain. The experience and aknowledgement of pain. Or even the acceptance of it.
wow, what was it like? Now that I'v seen this, if they still have the gothic weekends then maybe me and my friends might plan a wee trip up to Whitby someday. =D
I agree with his last sentence. Goth is somewhere where anyone who feels left out is automatically welcomed, and really, that's the best definition of goth I've yet heard. It's all about acceptance. The aesthetic and music is part of it and where it began respectively, but acceptance is what it's all about.
I usually buy mine from random shops like I get my skinny jeans from primark and my black shirts from anywhere that sells them :p my ruffle shirts I get from goth websites :) where do you get yours from hun?
@MissGothicGirlie we have a goth nightclub here in Edinburgh called Ascension only thing ism its only on once a month :( i may go to the halloween one, gives me more time to get my outfits together and bought lol.
@Gothica059 Thanks :) I find alternative fashion ever so interesting don't you? Especially goth :P May i ask where do you get your clothes? :) Maybe change where i get my clothes from :P
@Gothica059 Oh wow :) I saw this really nice cane with a skull made of crystals on the top :) May i ask, What do you do with your hair? Any fancy back combing? :) (Yes i am obsessed with fashion) :)
@MissGothicGirlie i like a bit of everything, i like to mix it up a bit. for instance, i am currently looking to get a black tailcoat to go with my white ruffle shirt, but i also just like wearing a simple black shirt and either a red or black tie oh oh or my dancing skeleton tie ^_^ them together with skinny jeans and my knee high new rocks :) would you mind if i rallied the question to yourself? :)
I live in the U.S. and in the Coachella Valley at that, and if I saw the majority of students on campus dressing like cybergoths, romantic goths, punks, and trad goths, I'd probably pass out and probably die and go to heaven for a moment or two. Its times like this I wish I was born in the UK.
Seriously, very far away and a city would be good for you, and out of state if you can. Remember, this is a process that will take several years to complete. The clothing alone will take at least 4 or 5 years, every 2 months go one shade darker, wear silver eyeshadow instead of black, and wait until you get your own place before you decorate your room, then your house can be your gothic domain.
The only problem with Whitby is that it has been invaded by Role Players and norms in fancy dress .... the real Gothic element has been heavily diluted.
"Most goths grow out of it by 20."
Ha ha! That had me in stitches. Being a "true" goth *begins* at 20.
I'm gonna be 80 and still (shakily) applying eyeliner and black lipstick.
Huge props to the interviewer for actually *trying* it, rather than just judging from afar.
Oh my goth, this guy is so nice refreshing in all that negative gothic documentaries. I nearly cried. Thanks
I just love how positive this was. I really enjoyed it :)

Some people wouldn't be anywhere NEAR as open-minded as he was. As a goth, I say he deserves props! \m/(-_-)\m/

I'm really happy someone posted this! I didn't think I would be able to see it. I really like his closing comment.
I love how that vampire goth was so shocked after the interviewer turned goth "Blooody hell!" XD!!
I was at the first one. Still here, still gothic... .
The TV presenter is awesome and his ease after being all gothed-up makes me really happy :)
6:21 he sort of looks like Peter Murphy! It's that contour in the cheek bones!
I thought the same thing!
I want to go to whitby goth weekend one day 💜

I was in the band that played right before The Damned. I'm glad this is still here-good memories!

On behalf of goths worldwide, thanks for showing us positively!

Lullaby, by the cure...I love that song. And, these clothes are lovely...
The good old days of WGW. We did not stat going to 2008 which I think was the start of its decline. So wished I had gone years ago. Now just full of Steampunks and weekend Goths.
The song that was played live is called the devils toybox by uninvited guest

Finally a program that doesn't bash Goth.
great segment. it is true at least in my case, once a goth always a goth. OXOXOX
The band is Uninvited Guest. The song they're performing is called "The Devil's Toybox."
It's called "Lullabye" on the album Disintegration or you can get it on thier Greatest Hits album.
I would say if there was any common thread among goth individuals, it would be pain. The experience and aknowledgement of pain. Or even the acceptance of it.
ahh Dave from The Damned!!
Love it

@MissGothicGirlie

this made me smile ^_^ s nice to see that goths are respected like normal people here. Very nice!
Can anyone tell me the name of the first song that comes on please ??
I live in the U.S. and in the Coachella Valley at that, and if I saw the majority of students on campus dressing like cybergoths, romantic goths, punks, and trad goths, I'd probably pass out and probably die and go to heaven for a moment or two. Its times like this I wish I was born in the UK.
was good back in the days

lol robert52281, have you watched the vid? Whitby is in England in West Yorkshire.
@MissGothicGirlie
Actually I don't backcomb, I have long ginger hair with an undercut. I usually brush my hair down one side or tie it back :)
@MissGothicGirlie
do you know the dates for it? :)
I like this. It showed how the culture really is!
I can't belive this is from 2006
What are the songs in this video. The first i knpw is Bauhaus. But whats the Strange song actually called
sounds like People Are Strange by The Doors
That was nice
What's that song being sung on stage at 6:43? I can't place it.
I want to go to Whitby one day.
WHAT IS THE BAND (and song) AT 6:44??????????
The only problem with Whitby is that it has been invaded by Role Players and norms in fancy dress .... the real Gothic element has been heavily diluted.
Where the Goths playing Sunderland AFC or is that the colours of another local team?
what's the song at 4:20????
