The Oyakodon sauce don't use sake because sake is expensive in Singapore. Some Singapore food store are Halah certified, that are catered to Singapore Malay community, who are majority are Muslim, thus cannot have alcohol in it.
Problem with Japanese Food in food courts in Singapore is that they are done in such a way that they are meant to be cheap. Reason why they aren't made to order like the ones in restaurants is because of the cost, Time to prep each dishes and so on. And it is also one of the reason why teriyaki chicken or alot of the items in the menu are actually fried. It's because they can fry them first then refry then again to heat them back up. Most try to mix Korean and Japanese food as if that they are the same thing but we know that they aren't. If you ever want to try other similar Japanese style food in food court. You have to try and find Washoku Goen in your area's food court as they serve authentic curries and ramen.
Hi Ghib, my name is David Wang from China, I just arrived in Singapore, may I know, where can I taste typical Japanese food in Singapore ? of course it is not too expensive ! Could you recommend one for me ? I enjoy Japanese food so much !
Yes singaporeans don't like their food to be too salty. That's why they don't put much shoyu in their food. There was once I ordered a shoyu ramen at a ramen stall in japan. It was so salty that I had to stop eating. Generally I find tonkotsu soup base is more popular than shoyu in sg.
@@Sephira08 mentaiko is super popular amongst the youth, idk about other age groups.. there is a reason why genki sushi and random bars sell mentaiko fries imo hahah
A lot of Japanese food in Singapore comes breaded and deep fried, no idea why But even if it isnt authentic, it usually tastes great. To the local palattes at least.
I guess presentation was further compromised with these being takeaway. If you dine in, they might probably put a bit more effort in presenting the dish, even food courts. With takeaways in Singapore/Malaysia, I guess they just want to make sure to be able to jam pack everything into what limited plastic containers they have. If I remember correctly, in Japan, if you order a set meal and dine in, it is called teishoku and you get served in nice platters and everything. If you order a takeaway, that's when you get a bento. Bento = takeaway by default, right?
Those bento like takeaways do exist but you need to remember that those cost extra money which is why some foodcourt skim on the "authentic packaging to save money.
Thanks for the heads up on the Hokkaido Self Drive webminar. We did an 18 days drive & eat around Hokkaido in August 2019. It's a fabulous place & we were planning for another trip for autumn. Hoped to get the webminar to relive places we had been to & see those we missed out.
As someone who has travelled cheap in Japan before. I can say that the taste of the food in Japan can be comparable to our food court Japanese food if the price point is about the same. So if I wander out to some cheap food place outside some "ulu" Japanese train stations and you can see the local Japanese workers going there for quick bites. Yes, the food at those places will be cheap like 300/400 yen and the taste will be like food court Japanese food. Of course, that being said, it can also be quite tasty like there are good tasting food court Japanese food in Singapore
In food court level, I think the only acceptable katsu curry is by Washoku-goen. But somehow they are losing outlets. Maybe price too high. But even Yoshinoya fall way below their Japanese standards. Or just go do Donki's food court. It's just their price is at restaurant level.
When i want Japanese food, i look to Yoshinoya. I ate Yoshinoya EVERY DINNER while i was in Tokyo and Osaka. The price for taste with amount of food provided is perfect!
I agree that bento ought to have more variety and colour in the presentation. A lot of work goes into making a bento because it brightens the workers' day. As for the missing plum bits, I can get furikake from Donki or Every Store and add them. These days I just settle for norishō, those seasoned seaweed.
Yes Singaporeans prefer sweet flavour (kecap manis) to salty (shoyu) probably chinese influced by indian and malay cuisine. Presentation is definitely not the highest priority here so long as its tasty. Abit like a salad or what the call rojak style
You can do a review for izakaya nijumaru at cuppage. Very authentic Japanese food. And there’s plenty of Japanese eateries there too popular with Japanese expats
My favourite hawker center Japanese food stall is Yao Japanese Rice House at Tanjong Pagar Plaza. The Tonkatsu there is thick and juicy! So good value for money!
I need to highlight this. Most Singaporeans love fried food. That's probably why the meats in your teriyaki chicken and oyakudon were fried. Quite frankly, lots of Singaporean just don't cook that much or often so when we eat out in coffeeshops and food courts, we don't care much about presentation and authenticity. What we actually look forward to is the affordability. That's why we tend not to mind about the compromising taste. For the record, we love soy sauce but I dare say that if it's an authentic Japanese shoyu, it's expensive to be used for food court businesses. Yes, don't eat pseudo Japanese food if you're going for presentation and taste.
You need to try this restaurant called “Nakajima Suisan” at Takashimaya basement food hall. They specialise in Japanese grilled fish of all sorts. It’s really authentic and affordable. Quite the hidden gem. Mostly know to ppl working around the area only.
As you may know, Takashimaya is Japanese department store and Nakajima-suisan as well. Takashimaya in Japan also has Nakajima-suisan. It is natural that they serve great Japanese dish. Actually, I'm surprised to know Takashimaya and Nakajima suisan are in Singapore!
So happy watching you eating (mostly) happily! Would like to recommend you to have a meal at Japanese Curry Express at Fortune Centre, it's a nice hidden gem for my family, would like to hear what you think about the food there! :)
if you wanna try jpn food in sg, then you perhaps need to go to Yayoiken, a jpn set meal restaurant its a bit pricy compared to food court menu, but the quality is 100% confirmed I've been to the one in buona vista where lots of jpn restaurants locate including 牛角
You said it best, taste cater to local not japanese. Personally i rather not have an authentic taste. it defeat the purpose of travelling abroad. But sadly i always avoid travelling to Japan for holidays. It is hard to gauge the expenses instead i went for a cheaper alternative which is South Korea. I would really like to have that japanese stamp on my passport once travelling have fully open up.
I think Japanese food from food court is pretty decent and worth the price! May not be as authentic as Japan ones but the taste wise is suitable for locals
I totally agree with u gib san. I am seriously a big fan of japanese food, i love sake n mirin so much that i will it in most of the dishes i cook. Japanese Food court food is just 40% japanese to me, nothing to great.
Most Singaporeans would rather choose taste over presentation. On top of that, the price must be affordable. In recent years, we are seeing many Japanese foods outlets appearing in SG food courts, cafe, restaurants, hotels etc only cater to the locals but also to other foreigners in SG.
7:28 maybe thats why 4 of my friends opted for the Tonkotsu flavor when we were at the Menbaka Fire Ramen restaurant. The remaining 4 including me ordered the Shoyu flavor.
Wow, I'm surprised there was anything decent at all from a food court's japanese food stall lol. *takes notes on the Compass One katsu curry for future reference
my own rule of thumb, in southeast asia including singapore, if you are not sure whether a japanese restaurant is quite legit or not, most of the time ordering katsu curry won't disappoint (of course if it has it). 個人的な経験だけど、東南アジアのあやしそうな和食屋さんで何を食べたらいいかわからない時はカツカレーを頼んだらだいたい大丈夫です!(あればの話だけどね)
Please do a video on the most authentic Japanese restaurants next! Would love to go there. I too feel that Japanese shops lack the authenticity I can only find in Japan! I also wish that Japanese supermarkets would stock up on more varieties and unique selections of Japanese products! They always repeat the same brands :( Missing Japan
Ghib if you see this please do a video on Tokyo Soba at Tanjong Pagar!! Would be curious on your take - one of the most authentic (and affordable) soba places in Singapore IMO!
Ghib san, the Japanese curry w rice is usually nice. Curry goes well w evthing basically. With bread, naan also nice. For me, I usually go for the salmon curry rice (not all places have it tho), one of my faves. Lol.
Think because most Singaporean like fried food but I prefer the normal meat for teriyaki sauce too. And yes most of the Japanese food does the curry very well
totally agreed with you.. some japanese food in Food Court are sure lacking of something... but just cant complain as the price are damn affordable and its for mass market
having japanese food in food courts is like a hit or miss thing. some taste decent, some taste bland or not good, encountered a few times the miso soup was so diluted theres no taste at all....mostly i prefer to eat at a japanese restaurant if i crave japanese food, or takeaway at donki.
I don't think it's that good but you just have to adjust your expectations. It's more to agar agar get a taste of it and fill your stomach rather than for something truly authentic.
From watching you, I deserved that you were surprised that at least some of the food was pretty tasty. None though quite made it as far as presentation was concerned & perhaps to special flavour that Japanese enjoy (can't think of what the Japanese call it. Umai maybe?). In my area of rural Australia, we don't have food court Japanese food, which I am happy about. However we do have 2 excellent good Japanese budget type eateries / cafes with qualified Japanese cooks & chefs operating them. The food is so good & service excellent.
When I read the title, I kinda set my mind it will be all flops. Surprised that your verdict overall is not that bad, taking account is from food court. I shall give it a try next time. Great video
Japanese food is great, but health is important, catering to local tastes is essential for the running survival of the eateries..I do enjoy eating Japanese food 🍲.. In Japan and Singapore..
I'm hungry already.... 😋🤤😜
The Oyakodon sauce don't use sake because sake is expensive in Singapore. Some Singapore food store are Halah certified, that are catered to Singapore Malay community, who are majority are Muslim, thus cannot have alcohol in it.

I love mentaiko a lot and i am Singaporean....my palate is unlike the typical Singaporean.
@@Sephira08 mentaiko is super popular amongst the youth, idk about other age groups.. there is a reason why genki sushi and random bars sell mentaiko fries imo hahah
@@keinniclifeafter1193 mentaiko mayo is yummy, however mentaiko itself is super salty imo 😹
Since when SGeans don’t like salty food? 😂
Singapore has only 1 season.... So, the colour is standardise to reflect summer only. The cooks are being honest in expression. Dry and crispy.
lol
Thats so sad

Great observation about lack of color in the food presentation. So true about Japan and abroad.
9:20 Actually, that’s just “chicken Katsu don”. Lol
Where is this foodcourt?? Im now interested to try!
Next time try singapore food lah
I am impressed with the take out containers from the first place!
it’s so nice to see new food courts being shown especially the ones i frequent to :))

Agree, it depends on which stall you get from, but I can understand both side of the arguments

You should try food from Don Don Donki
I have yet to find a good oyakodon in Singapore, not even in Japanese restaurants. Do share if you have any good recommendations.
