I've wanted, for years, to start making silver jewelry but the most daunting task is the knowledge of not "over investing" from the onset. This is a true blessing. Thank you.
My advice, go as minimum as you can - just get started and see where your interests head - your tool list will follow. 🙂 I started out by finding a jeweler going out of business on ebay. 👍 then I discovered I had a strong liking for lapidary, and so started slowly investing towards that. Im also very big with diy (check out my channel). Main thing is, just start 🙂
This is the best beginners tool guide I've seen.... and I've seen a lot!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing these videos. I'm trying to teach myself the craft and you're right, it can be overwhelming! So you are a God send. Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for this video! I’m getting my daughter everything she needs to get started for Christmas and had no idea where to start! I’ve watched almost all your videos now and they’re very well put together. Thank you!
Thanks so much for going over the necessary items, what you use them for, and why you like those items. The price list and totals was also most helpful. Very clear, concise, and you explained things so well. I very much appreciate this as I consider a major job change and move for the retirement years of my life. More helpful than anything else I have seen.
Great presentation!! I have acquired all of these tools by watching eBay closely for "jewler tool lot". I've bought them for a fraction of the "new" price. When I got duplicate tools, I traded with members of our lapidary club or sold online. Thanks for a great list!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I have been looking for videos that actually start at the beginning!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ I have taken a few expensive classes and in 2 of your videos have cleared so much up for me!!!
thank you x a million for making these videos, they are the most helpful and clear I’ve seen so far and it makes everything so much more approachable!! also, the links you provided are so appreciated since most videos tell you what you need but only link expensive kits from jewelry companies 😭
Thank you SO much for these videos!! My great grandma left me all of her lapidary/silversmithing tools and after finding your channel I feel like I can get started using everything!! 💕
Can you give any information about your leather mats on your desktop? I just had a wooden counter installed for my workbench, and I want to protect it at all costs. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the very detailed explanation of all the tools I will need and not need to spend money on. Your advice has been the best I've found as far as what materials I will need and how much it's gonna cost me. Wonderful tutorial
I’m glad you found this helpful! I made the mistake of purchasing too many tools when I first started out as well. Such a big waste of money 😑 I tried to be as concise as possible with this tool list. A lot of these are the bare minimum but I think a great starting point!
Hi there! I came across your video and it is very helpful. I was trying to click the brass hammer link but the link takes me to a hammer that is "alloy steel" it look similar but you mentioned your is a brass hammer.
Hmm sorry about that! Not sure if the link was updated! I think alloy steel would work just fine though. If not there may be other brass options on Amazon if you do some digging or you could find one at your local hardware store!😊
Your videos are amazing! I don't know how you don't have way more subscribers but I'm sure you'll be there soon with the quality videos and info! Most people charge for this sort of information!
Hi. Are you referring to the saw blade in a jeweler's saw? If so I have a full video that will answer all those types of questions! ua-cam.com/video/papzumc6Lzg/v-deo.html
Check out this video! ua-cam.com/video/bi26DAYYjf8/v-deo.html I go in to detail on all the different silver you can buy and also include a checklist and links in the description of the video
Mmm it can be difficult. You may be able to hammer it .5 a size to a full size larger. If the ring has a stone, you may need to remove the stone and add silver to the band to make it bigger depending on how much larger you need to go.
Hi there, question. You posted you bought your 3M radial bristle discs on amazon but when I click the link it’s no longer there. Any idea where I can buy these color discs you have so I can use it for my flex shaft? Thank you!!
@@SpiritMountainSilver 😭 any recommendations for another brand? If i go with the same brand as your flex shaft? Super new to this so I’m kinda confused on which bristles are good and will go with the machine.
Cute and talented. I'm a fan. 😜 Seriously though... only watched one video so far, but it'd be great if you could explain a bit more along the way. Like what the... pickle pot..? Is. For those of us that know nothing. I learned leatherworking from watching Chuck Dorsett with Weaver Leather Craft. Not sure if you're familiar, but his educational skill is phenomenal. Anyways... something to do, but definitely going to watch more of your videos. Would love to get into this.
Haha thank you! Check out some of my other process videos. I believe I go more in depth in to use of specific tools/equipment! My simple silver ring video and turquoise ring video may be helpful!😊
@@SpiritMountainSilver The tool video was good and helpful. As was the simple silver ring... though that left me with more questions. Like... why a pickle pot? What's the point? And it got me a bit curious about the stamping and how to get that done without deforming the metal, since it seems like it would... Though, no clue. Sorry. Can only blame it on being really new to this. I always have a million questions when I start getting into something. Lol.
Haha no worries I’m the same way! The pickle pot is where you will put your pickling acid which is used to clean the metal of fire scale and such after soldering! Stamping fan deform the metal so you must be careful when doing it and learn the right amount of pressure to use. I still have to practice stamping. It’s a hard skill to learn!
@@SpiritMountainSilver Appreciate the responses. Considering how good you've gotten with the rest of the silversmithing, I doubt you have a problem with stamping. 😜
@@SpiritMountainSilver Smithing is forming and raising, lots of hammering... this is the traditional and correct definition. I know that meaning changes with time, but... it is an important detail. No slight intended here. This is a universal mistake being made by many jewelry makers.
Hi everyone, this girl should be to learm bit more about metals! She shows as mandrel and blocks calling them stainless. It`s sure possibly, but for this tools are used hardened tool steels. There are existed hardened stainless steels, but they are expensive and not necessery. Tool steel is cheaper and better. Her "stainless" steel mandrel on top is bit rusty. Her "brass" hammer is sure from steel. Believe me, I've seen a lot of bronze and steel and I can tell the difference. About this "brass" "smoothing" hammer: please never try to flattening something by hammer surface like this. It should be bit rounded without sharp edges. Ask any blacksmith; it's the almost the same job. Next: necessery for round bending are round, and flat & round(or halfround) jaws pliers.
Thanks for sharing your insight! Always good to learn proper terminology and anyone concerned with these types of specifics should definitely take note. As for the hammers I use, they produce the results I’m going for, but there’s always different ways of doing things and finding what works for you is all part of the joy of silversmithing!
@@SpiritMountainSilver :) Let try to bit rounding surface of yours hammer and remove sharp edges use sandpaper. You'll see how the hammer works better. And necessarilly polish surface by felt. Good luck! K.
@@krzysztofkocierba8537 All great points! This video was intended as a beginner introductory video, and because of that I didn’t want to overwhelm the audience with too much information. 😊 But I will definitely be doing a more in depth follow up video some time in the near future. Stay tuned!
@@SpiritMountainSilver Especially for beginners properly way is the most important think. For example this form hammer surface is excellent for nails hammering, not for silversmithing. Heartly regards. K

No acetylene torches?
Nope! I only use butane and have never run in to any issues!😊
@@SpiritMountainSilver if I were to only buy one of the butane torches starting out, which one would you recommend?
Use only copper tweezers in the pickle because all other metal tweezers will make your pickle give a rose patina to all you pickle.
Yup! This is correct!🙌🏻

Yes!
