Thanks for the great explanation on using planner boards. I have fished inland lakes my whole life. But living near Lake Superior, I'd like to try it out there. But it is a different style of fishing than what I am accustomed to. This video is of great help to me in learning the art of big lake fishing.
Good informative video. One thing you might want to mention in a future video beyond the basics is to explain that your line needs to go behind the pin that is on the red tail clip. This will help prevent you from losing a board. Other tips that you might want to explain is how to rig your line in the front clip so that you can release your line from the board so you do not have to fight the board and the fish. Another great video would be to show how you can tell when you have a fish or weed on your board. Just a couple of examples, tattle flag goes part way down, the boards rear end submerges, the board starts sliding backwards. In the last two examples the flag will not necessarily go down, also some people have boards without tattle flags. Cheers!
Awesome video. Just bought a couple planer boards from offshore today. Looking forward to using them. This was really the only video that was clear cut how to use. Thank you. -Scott
New sub! Just found the channel always on here just didn’t know there was a walleye community in Colorful Colorado ... Anyone wanna give up some Colorado walleye hot spots? Looking for the eaters been here for four years and live in Foco... and off shore should be the only brand you buy, never buy cheap gear ⚙️!
Everyone fails to mention the spring inside the clip can slide to decrease tension on the clip, I prefer to be able to pop the main clip to float the board to the center and around my other boards.. VERY IMPORTANT !
So tell me what you do when u have a fish on. Do you let it slide down the line as you real the fish in or do you take the planer board off pdq , confusing.
Quick?? What determines how far away from the boat they run? Is it how much line you let out? So, if you have more than one board on one side, you just let more line out for the furthest away and less line as you come towards the boat? Thanks for video!
I must have watched 20 YT videos today on planer boards and not a single one explains does the further board go deeper or more shallow? The inter ones how do you distance them and what are the depths? Nobody seems to explain that part.
Nice video. Could you also explain how the boards work once a fish is caught? Say, fish on outside board, and how to avoid tangles with the inside board....? Appreciated!
What is the minimum and maximum speed for planer boards? What type of line do you have on your line counter reels (mono...flourocarbon) and what pound test?
I've been able to troll them as slow as .6 mph. They are very steady in the water. Maximum speed, probably 3.5mph. But I don't see fish cruising that fast usually. I have Monofiliment 12lb on my reels and then I tie a swivel or a double uni knot and add a 8 foot piece of 8lb flouro. The two back poles are lead core with a 12 foot, 8lb flouro leader.
I would think a lure, a deep diving crank, with its resistance would cause the tattle flag to always pull down. My apoligies if someone has already inquired on this topic. Please advise. Thanks in advance
Thanks so much for your helpful video! I just subbed! Quick question, is there a way to hook a planer board permanently to a side-mounted downrigger on a kayak with a type of release clip that comes off the planer board (like a downrigger weight) when the fish hits?
No need. Double wrap the front clip and clip behind the pin on the back clip. Never lost one ever. If they come off you can always see then floating but mine still have yet to come off completely.
@@CatchingColorado thanks for the quick reply I have two of these and I'm trying them for the first time tomorrow morning. Was totally confused but I think with your instructions I'm okay now. Fishing Western Long Island sound by the throgs neck and white stone Bridges.
Just “SUB’d” Nice video and very informative. We are new to trolling for trout and new to planer boards. We use, while trolling, deep diving lures and spinning rooster tails. How can we determine the depth of our lures and spinners? Is there a targeted depth we should aim for? Is there a formula to determine depth? Thanks, Joseph
First 30 seconds. These are the only good planer boards... the rest are cheaper and not as good. Well since I've been fishing since you were 2 I'll say their are a few brands that are absolutely incredible! And last way way longer than off shore. Turn your hat on the rite way.
This is my opinion. Just like you explained yours here. I have had 3 other brands in the past. These are my favorite and most widely used in my area. I don't think any board wouldnt last years as its plastic and foam. My hat is on correctly.
@@michiganwoodsman2199 because this is my UA-cam channel and I like to respond to any comment positive or negative. You can go around here calling people names but the fact remains, your attitude hasn't changed much since your last message. I'm willing to assume that's because your boat ramps are likely closed and you haven't been fishing rather than a character flaw. Take care bud.
I apologize. I am very upset over other stuff going on! Period. But as a guy with a ridiculous amount of fishing experience I would say your opinion is still incorrect lol. But I shouldn't have even wrote the first time because their is zero point! Again I'm sorry, be safe.
this is the best video explaining planer boards
That is exactly how we run ours boards on lake st. Clair, guys you got to try these boards they really increase your hook ups. Great video I subbed.
Finally, a video that explains this correctly. Just bought these and was totally confused until now.
Glad it could help you!

Excellent video!! Like a military briefing, is precise, concise and with full knowledge of the subject. Thank you!!
Much appreciated lesson on use, the close up in house later helped. I'll definitely be more confident with setting them up now. Thanks So Much
Glad it was helpful! I love planer boards for covering water and have caught my second biggest walleye on one.
Thank you man for great video. Tight lines brother

Great thanks has me sold

Great visual explanation, nice work!
Very good information.
Great Video,Thx for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
The planer board is beautifully explained in your video thank you , thinking about subscribing to your channel

Great video.. can I use this just drifting? Or do I need to be trolling? Thank u
Verry good buddy. I m happy
I'm glad
Thought I would checkout your UA-cam channel after I saw you advertising your channel on your truck in Louisville! Good stuff man!
That's awesome! Thanks for coming and checking it out. I am up there quite a bit. :)
I see your line is attached to two clips but I don't understand what keeps the planer board to your line after a fish hits. Please explain. Thanks

Would like to know how to set depth is there a formula? Any videos on that?
Look at Precision Trolling Data! Its the most accurate way to measure by far
Quick?? What determines how far away from the boat they run? Is it how much line you let out? So, if you have more than one board on one side, you just let more line out for the furthest away and less line as you come towards the boat? Thanks for video!
That is correct
the line you let out after tie to planner board would that affect the depth or the line is just the length from your boat to the planner board? Thanks
Depth is only affected by the amount of line behind the board. Line from boat to board doesn't affect anything but distance
looks like you can loose this board the way that it's clip on, right? other boards has a swivel you run the line through
What rod do you use, brand, action etc. ?? I've been using the OR12R for about 15 years and its time to update the rod. Thanks
I use a Cabela's trolling rod. A 9 foot Medium heavy that telescopes. They are $30 at cabelas
Can we use lead core with it?
You can but It would be kinda heavy. I run lead core out the back and snap weights on my boards
Does the back release come out when a fish strikes or do you have to manually release it by the fishing pole?
You have to manually release it. Easy job with two people. Doable with one.
Nice video, appreciate the up close clip! Hey so how do reverse the flag? Making it pop UP when u have a strike? That's a new one on me!
You move the clip attached to the flag to the back side of the flag. Look on offshore tackles website. They have a diagram.
Great video but why the double loop on front of board? Don't you want the board to release so you are not fighting the board along with the fish?
No, because then you have to turn around and pick up the board in the water and reel all the lines in to do so.
The board doesn't provide a lot of resistance either.
I must have watched 20 YT videos today on planer boards and not a single one explains does the further board go deeper or more shallow? The inter ones how do you distance them and what are the depths? Nobody seems to explain that part.
Equal or deeper on outside boards. Distance is up to you. We usually do 50ft on line counters from each board.
Nice video. Could you also explain how the boards work once a fish is caught? Say, fish on outside board, and how to avoid tangles with the inside board....? Appreciated!
Let the fish drop back on a tight line and bring the back pole up to the now open forward rod holder
Great video on planer boards. Catfish quite a bit and I’m looking for alternatives like this. Thank you again. I subscribed please consider.-Scott
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and the sub!
If they are a board we can use in each side

Do you use sinkers with this or no
You can to get it down! I didn't

It wont. You can set the tension on the spring to make the flag stiffer.

Not that I know of but you could definitely get creative with it!
Looks like you forgot to feed the line through the little circle screw so you do not lose the board?
No need. Double wrap the front clip and clip behind the pin on the back clip. Never lost one ever. If they come off you can always see then floating but mine still have yet to come off completely.

Is there a targeted depth we should aim for?
Is there a formula to determine depth?

Won’t it break free from both?
No, there is a pin inside the clip that goes in front of the line and holds it. The clips are very stout. Super strong
u could have explained better the one clip u dont want to come off while fighting fish but good vidio
Did you ever loose a planer board
never
one bite and the side planer is gone...
Why? I'm trying to learn!
Mine Never come off.
As long as you have strong clips it will hold the line just fine. There is also a pin in each clip you can put your line behind for security.

Just get rid of the stupid tattle flags or you will look like novice. They are worthless. It's not hard to figure out when there's a fish strike.
I don't know. It depends on the choppy waves/size of fish. It's pretty easy to tell.
