    Great video

    good video. I'll just point out that you were doing the same thing I was doing with the sams pro release. you were wrapping your line around the thinner plastic nipple. It's designed to wrap around the thicker rubber nipple beneath it. It will trip much better.

      Thanks so much Ryan! I found this out shortly after making the video and felt like kind of a dummy. After wrapping it around the rubber part I had to readjust them all for a lighter trip. You are right, they trip a lot better now. Thanks so much for watching and for the comment!

      I was going to say the same thing. But to be fair, the instructions that came with my release were not that well explained. It also came with a large split ring that I tried with and without. And in the instructions I got, it was not clear whether to have the pin open back or forward, or when using the ring, upwards or downwards. I spent a lot of time fooling around with it. And from my recliner here, I don't actually remember which way I ender up liking. I do like them the best because I always want the front to release. But there was also a learning curve on which way to wrap the line, because there were many instances it didn't release.

    I wrap around the rubber washer 4 times works perfect that's the correct way wrapping on the skinny part ware it latches wares the line out and slips because its slippery plastic but everyone has their own way good luck !

      @TheMightyBluegill  3 роки тому +1

      I now do it the correct way as you suggest. I will agree with the guy below who said that it is harder to trip when the line is around the rubber washer. I might just need to reduce the spring tension though.

      @@TheMightyBluegill is that washer actually rubber? I purchased from Amish Outfitters (design looks identical) and the part is plastic.
      Seems rubber might be better to help hold the line better without sliding on the washer

      @@TheMightyBluegill I'm looking on Ebay and see both Sams and Zams. Do you know if they are the same, or is Zams a knock-off? Their descriptions mention "composite rubber" and one mentions a "hard rubber" which makes me skeptical. Naturally Zams is much cheaper ... just dont want to buy some junk!

      @@charlieauer1672 I saw those as well, and wondered if they were different, and if so how. One of them was shipped out of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, which gave me a little bit more confidence than I made in China knock off. I am watching them but haven't ordered them. If you end up with them let us know how they do. They're a whole lot cheaper.

    I use the Sam's Pro releases and I love them I wrap them exactly how you do around the skinny part that way they release every time

    • @TheMightyBluegill
      @TheMightyBluegill  3 роки тому

      I now wrap it around the rubber washer, but I agree with you that it is much easier to trip when you wrap around the skinny part. I think because you have better leverage being further away from the pivot point.

    I use the OR 19 as my trip release and use the OR18 going to the lure tightened down so that I will never need to chase a run away board.

    I suppose you can fish however you want, but braided line is not the best choice for trolling. With no stretch and a short strike it can tear the lips off of the fish. Braid is slippery and that is why you have trouble keeping it in your release without having to wrap the line around it. Heavy mono with a leader of whatever you want is always a better choice for trolling.

    • @TheMightyBluegill
      @TheMightyBluegill  3 роки тому

      Totally agree. I prefer the smaller diameter so that I can get my lures deeper. I use longer rods with a lot of bend to make up for the lack of stretch.

    • @Moondog9322
      @Moondog9322 3 роки тому +1

      I assume you mean when trolling with boards. Braided line is usually preferred when trolling with dipsys.

    • @TheMightyBluegill
      @TheMightyBluegill  3 роки тому

      @@Moondog9322 I think trolling with boards is the central topic. Dipsy's are awesome if you have the heavier duty rods to pull them. Between my lighter rods, and the slack that the boards create with the triangle I'm still very happy with the performance of braid, especially given the narrow diameter that lets me get the lures down deeper in high altitude reservations.
      If I were a shallow water fisherman exclusively then mono would be my jam. But at least Tennessee where you're sometimes targeting fish 75 and 100 ft deep mono will not get you there.

Do you mind if she sends you some information that mat help you. On another note, would you suggest tx12 or tx22 planer boards for walley? Thanks for any info

    Great video. This inspired me to buy a couple of planer boards and looking to get the Sam's pro release soon! I have a question. I'm very new to planers but, when a fish bites behind the board will you see action at the rod tip or should you have to study the planer constantly? Or both? Thanks good luck out there!

    • @TheMightyBluegill
      @TheMightyBluegill  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry for the late reply, Gary. Most of the time it's about watching the planer board. Bigger fish, though, and you'll know by the rod. Sometimes there will be an initial drag pull, and really big fish will rip them down like a bobber, lol. Other times, a small fish can get pulled around for a long time without knowing it. Sometimes we'll take a vote in the boat before reeling in since it's that hard to tell with small fish.
      Thanks for the comment.

      Two additional tips. 1) Set your drag as light as possible, with the clicker on. That way, when a fish hits, you will hear the drag slip. 2) Vertical rod trees and using the same rods and same boards really helps. When lined up vertically, I can easily see when one rod is bent slightly farther than the other two and I know that I must have picked up a piece of weed or maybe a very small fish. Otherwise, I would never know.

    New guy to rod trees, when i trip the release the planer goes to the center allowing it to be reeled to back of the boat? Without tangling?

    When you catch a fish and it releases on the Sam's pro release, does this allow you to pull the board in easily, take it off the back clip and continue fighting the fish, or do you have to "fight" the board in the whole way. If that makes any sense, thanks

    • @kurtriedmuller8223
      @kurtriedmuller8223 3 роки тому +1

      The board pulls in easier with any front release and the back one stay clipped because it wont grab and pull away or dive I tried both ways to test front release is better and Sam's better for braid and you wrap the braid around the rubber washer

    • @TheMightyBluegill
      @TheMightyBluegill  3 роки тому

      It's the same as the stock clip: it all depends on the rear clip. If you use the red OR clip with the pin, then the board stays there on the line, but without pulling it out to the side. You reel the board in, remove it, and then fight the fish the rest of the way.

  • @fisherguy719
    @fisherguy719 2 роки тому

    You're over thinking all of this. Get the off shore black stacker releases. Cut the wire and use a release on the front of the board.. buy 3 stickers you do 6 boards for 6 bucks each. We were doing that in the 90's in the pwt days. Jim Randall came up wit that. Bruce DeShawn was not happy but didn't take it personal. Best fishes.
