First of all, living in a Nordic country, I wouldn't get anything below the 4S. RWD maybe fine in LA, but not anywhere you get real winter seasons. And second of all, doing commuting in the car makes for such a bigger reason to get the turbo, or GTS, since you get that extra enjoyment every small chance you get. I would argue get the car you can afford. And only if you're the type that couldn't be bothered with a powerful car, should you get the RWD. For anyone into powerful cars, it's well worth the extra money. And the standard stuff on the turbo is all on my list of options I would want. 18-way seats are such an improvement over the 14-way seats, which is such an improvement over the standard seats. And you're wrong when you say the only difference is the motor setup, which evidently is the whole drivetrain by the way. It's not just the motors that are different. But you cannot spec the cars identical. For instance carbon ceramic brakes is not an option on the RWD and 4S, it used to be, but it's not on the MY22. The big 410mm 10-piston tungsten coated brakes standard on the turbo isn't an option on any of the other models. You can get a smaller rotor and less pistons, but it's not the same. The front looks different on the turbo, and you cannot get that front on any of the other cars. Incidentally you can get the turbo S front, for some reason. The GTS has an interior you can't get on any of the other trims. So it is actually more to it than the motors. And with the right spec, it's a far more spirited drive than the base model. For instance the PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control), the car has no body roll at all, and remains totally flat through cornering. You can really feel it in the car too. It's much stiffer and controlled, and it's a much more sports car feel to the car, when it has that system. The same goes for the Torque vectoring (PTV+), which improves traction and help the car stay on power through corners. And you have the rear axle steering, which also helps the car with cornering. And combined it's a totally different drive. It's much closer to the 911. And you can still daily drive the car. And take some B-roads on your way home to let the car stretch it's legs a little. I would argue you get the full sports car when you spec the Taycan correctly. For me that would be GTS at the minimum, and all the driving goodies, PDCC, PTV+, Rear Axle steering, 18-way seats, and a whole lot more. I do agree with you about the options you mentioned. I would add rear axle steering, 360 camera, upgraded seats and Bose sound system at the list of minimum build. And preferably black window trim, model designations and mirror details, 21" rims and sport side skirts. But that's probably not important to everyone. But you want the rear axle steering. The car is far more agile, and with a narrower turning circle, you can with far more ease get around narrow parking garages and things like that. And you want the 360 camera too. The car is wide, and it's easy to hit things with the rims. With the 360 you can avoid that with ease. Oh and it's actually not the 0-100 that's the reason I would get the turbo. It's the 80-120. The 4S feels more than quick enough from 0. But when you going to overtake someone at speed, it's just something with that extra 100+HP that gives the car such more confidence do to the job.
A lot of what you say is fair but unless you want to drive in a way that is many times beyond what is safe and reasonable (like doing 120 mph in a 45 mph zone) I don’t think you need most of the excess that you describe. With the 4S and none of the perf. options you will be passing with ease and cornering through stuff at very high speeds. I have driven the full perf. package turbo and I’d agree it’s nice to have but I live in road car paradise and I don’t think I would want to be going any faster than I already am in my 4S. Would the car handle a bit better? Sure, but there’s some fun to be had when you’re not just getting a car that’s fully neutralized in terms of how it moves from corner to corner. Porsche is famous for milking their customers with every option imaginable on the planet. I agree that the reviewer isn’t quite understanding the whole point of owning one of these vehicles. If you want to just plop into range mode you can get a Tesla or Hyundai Ioniq 5, etc.
Thank you, you wrote everything I was thinking ;) Went to a dealer today to look at a 4S but realised the GTS (and the Turbos) are so much more of what I want.
I have the 4S and it is more than enough for a daily driver. Thrilling, Luxurious and fast! However, I agree with all your points. If you can afford the Turbo or Turbo S - do it! My friends and I - all we talk about is getting the turbo… it’s an experience like no other if you can afford it!
I understand your argument, but anyone who charges at home and leaves home with a battery 100% can play a little. If someone can afford the turbo S, why would they buy a 4S? Also does anyone who owns a McLaren 570S v someone who owns a 720S go any slower or faster…no they will go on average the same. It depends what you can afford. Do you know any multi millionaire who would choose a standard people carrier over a luxury SUV…no! Get my point?

Dude, kinda get where you’re coming from but if we all only bought what we needed, we’d all be driving a Ford Focus. I bought a Turbo after driving the 4S as I have a Tesla 3 Performance and it felt sluggish in comparison.
Fair point. But I think he is targeting an audience that might not be big car enthusiasts. If you consider someone like myself -- 1st time buyer of any sports car -- it can be helpful. Go for 4S -- for someone like me, should be plenty. But for a person used to a V8, 600 hp car, Turbo is probably the better choice
Great video. I’m trying to decide between the 4S or the Turbo because the difference between the two on the used market is a lot less than new. Similar spec of 2020 4S -100k or 2020 Turbo around 120K so wondering if the 20% difference is worth it?
If you are buying used and can afford the Turbo I would go for it. The market shift since the release of this video have made the gap very small and as you say its almost the same money today. What ever model you decide to go for you will be very pleased!
The problem you run into is that if you live in a cold climate you'll most likely want four wheel drive, which means the 4S. And once you have a 4S at a nice spec you'll discover that the turbo with the same spec is only about 15-20% more expensive. So if you're going to YOLO on a +150k Taycan you might as well go for the Turbo. Of course at that point you'll discover that the Model S Plaid with +1000ps is about half the price and wonder what the hell is wrong with Porsche.
I agree with most of the recommendations but not the window one. You don't need to spend the extra $1110 for the sound insulated glass. There are no studies that show a significant improvement. Even Porche has to back up its one study with a qualitative statement. "This reduces outside noise by up to 7.3 per cent in a frequency range of 630 hertz to 6.3 kilohertz. “That doesn’t sound like much, but everyone who’s ever tested the difference in driving conditions is impressed,” In other words, we can't prove it but trust us, people tell us it is great
I disagree, if you configure a 4S with all the extras that Turbo S have as standards you get to pretty much the same price. A test of this theory in the Porsche configurator will convince you.
I am in the process of buying a Turbo S. For most people that can afford these types of cars, they will likely require the additional performance of the GTS and higher because they will be coming from a similarly performant vehicle. With that said, if you are going to go for the higher performing variant, the better option is the Turbo being as though it performs exactly the same as a Turbo S when not in launch mode.
@@theeALister but the sales figures represent what the customers who are able to buy these cars actually require.. so it seems they don’t require the additional performance of gts higher. Is there any other way to see it?
In almost every way. :) All the way from the step of jumping in, getting started, to dash and infotainment. But especially the driver comfort with the smooth yet powerful drive. You instantly feel that its the next gen Porsche’s. But with that said I will trade it in for the Electric Macan once it’s available.
If you charge at home and live within 150 miles daily average commute or less, there’s very little range anxiety apart from the occasional road trip of you don’t have an ICE as a second car.
I totally agree with your reasoning of higher-performance spec EV's. There is no cooler engine layout (like an inline 6, V8 etc.), no turbo's or superchargers, no variable valve lift/timing changes, no different sound or gearbox, no change in HP or torque curve... Only an equal boring electric motor on the other axle (which reduces range), sometimes a bigger battery (which adds more weight) and more HP/torque, of which you already have enough to make yourself sick of G-forces in the base taycan. 4WD may be an argument in some areas but RWD with winter tires (and todays modern stability control systems) will also get you really far in wet/cold/snowy conditions in my opinion. In cars of this (price)class, it's all about making emotional arguments for the (higher spec) cars, otherwise everybody would buy secondhand Tesla model 3's.
