No way!! I remember whenever Fangamer advertised their Earthbound USA documentary back in 2015 and I swear I had preordered the combo that would’ve come with Ness’ backpack and the Earthbound fan guidebook but never got it. Everytime I tried looking up news on what was going on with the documentary I couldn’t find anything and I just assumed that Nintendo did what Nintendo does and filed cease and desists but I’m HYPED to find out that not only is it actually real, but that I can now preorder it too?? Fifteen year old me can finally rest easy 😌
Yes, it's incredibly surreal! I've been keeping an eye on this film ever since it was announced back then (I was 19). This documentary is the last thing from Fangamer's "You Are Now EarthBound" Kickstarter that needed to release, and it's finally here. I've seen the movie twice now (once at the world premiere in Tucson, and again at an encore screening), but I plan on watching it many more times 😅
Are you getting it on Blu-ray? I just ordered the physical and a digital copy (the latter you can watch right now)!
@@ThaneGaming Yes! “You Are Now Earthbound!” That’s right! Man, I completely forgot about it until you made this video! As soon as I found out about this I HAD to preorder the blu-ray but I’m definitely going to rent a digital copy to see it now😅
@@vigilante0511 I just did both as well, I'm rewatching via the digital rental now 😅 it'll be awesome having this thing physically, and I'm stoked to see what was cut from the final release!
Good stuff. I always think no one is ever too late to the Earthbound world. It's always wonderful to see young people discover the series and look past the dated aspects.
I am very excited to see the gamedev world open up with more accessibility so we can explore new Mother-likes.
You're reading a comment of a review of a documentary of a game. That's quite a few layers, but I'd say it's an accurate reflection of our collective passion for the series.
Damn, this review turned into a lesson on how to take a part in your favorite community. That's a thing I struggle with sometimes because everyone know that the people that have started a certain thing would be remember more fondly than the people that try to contribute to it after that and this thought makes me feel more insignificant than I can be.
I wouldn't doubt your significance to a particular community if you're highly active in it! While it's true that the original fans will forever be relevant to the story, you'll become part of it by contributing in new ways and ensuring that the fan spirit stays alive. If all we had was the Starmen.Net era of EarthBound fans, the games would just be known for having captured a single generation and they'd fall even further into obscurity. I have a parasocial relationship with a lot of the Starmen.Net oldbies, but I've been able to collaborate now with many current fans and I cherish that deeply.
@@ThaneGaming That feeling of insignificance came from the great moments I've probably missed because I didn't know about the thing when it came out ,but most of the time there still are other great things coming out I can contribute to. Maybe even make my own thing.

No I'm glad you replied! It's good to ramble sometimes 😅 I get what you're saying, I can certainly relate to that feeling. I mostly regret discovering the fandom later because I missed all of the huge Camp Fangamer conventions w/ connections I could have made. But, I've had plenty of other opportunities I'm very fortunate for in the time since, and I do think it's a great idea to start your own thing! @@promaster424

Great video! I was inspired to learn Japanese just to play Mother 3 (and all the Zeldas in their native language of course), 2 decades ago. I am so excited to see this movie. Back in the day, I couldn’t afford the cartridge either, but I could afford to rent Earthbound from Blockbuster a crapton of times and they rented you the strategy guide too for free (which wasn’t a normal thing). I would have never found the sesame seeds as a kid without the guide, unrequited sesame love…. only the Mothers are special like that ❤
I'm always amazed to hear from players who were motivated to learn Japanese to experience games that never released here! I started trying to learn Kana a while ago, because localizatiom facinates me and I mostly cover older games on my channel (at a time when Kanji was rarely used in game scripts). It'd make my job a lot easier not having to rely on translations from other fans, being able to compare & contrast the game's original text myself!
I have fond memories of Blockbuster rentals too...that's great they lent out the strategy guide back for EarthBound. I didn't know that! I've only ever read the scan on Nintendo's website, but I imagine flipping through the real thing is really something special. Luckily, Fangamer put out an awesome handbook that has a similar vibe to the official guide, so I can play through that way!

Here is a cheap way to play Earthbound on an official cart: buy the Japanese version of Earthbound. I got mine for about $15. Then use a retron 5 or equivalent emulation based console and run an English patch to play your Japanese game.
Your total cost of the console and game will be under $200
That's true, I hadn't really thought of this! I'm happy enough playing EarthBound on the SNES Classic Edition & NSO nowadays, but I may order the Japanese versions just to have them physically.
I am glad and so very much appreciative of your channel and you sharing this wonderful game series probably never would have known about the mother series if it was not for you I now have the fan translations for the GBA of mother one two and three I have played a couple hours of mother and mother 2 and wow

That's cool we played EarthBound at around the same time--I really love how a game that was already 15 years old by the time I played it was still able to change my life and become a passion of mine for this long (pretty soon it'll have been 15 years since then)! Some media really does stand the test of time.

I was 19 and did have a job at the time of the Kickstarter, but I had taken a bit of a break from EarthBound after Dark Aspects # 1 (in early 2014) and so I remember learning about it after everything was already funded and regretting not participating! I wound up purchasing a lot of the backer rewards separately well after the fact (the EarthBound handbook, Legends of Localization, the fan zine, and now the documentary). The doc was the last release to come from the Kickstarter, so I'm excited that everything has now come to fruition as well!

Stephen and Mals especially for me feel like it fits well with Reid and Camille to have their interview included in the bonus features
I also got some of the kickstarter merch later the guidebooks and fanzine and music cd just wish I had money back then to get to show support it was well worth it!

Question, is there Mother 3 spoilers one might pick up on if they've played at least Earthbound before? Or otherwise? Asking for a friend I really wanna sit down with this and watch. I'm definitely watching either way though! I can't wait!
There are definetely some MOTHER 3 spoilers for chapter 8 shown towards the end of the film, so be wary! From what I remember, you're safe up until the part with Chuggaconroy's MOTHER 3 Let's Play footage. The movie follows a timeline starting with EarthBound's release in the US, so the real spoilery section appears after Mato finishes the MOTHER 3 fan translation.

I actually had the really cool opportunity to work on the post production of this film. I only played some of the first just so I could have some context of what I was working on. But what I learned about Mother 3 from working on (and thus watching the documentary hundreds of times) the project, I don't feel like I got spoiled. It describes some tonal shifts and subject matter curveballs from the other games.
It’s awesome to hear from someone who worked on the post production, thanks for helping contribute to this wonderful film! In my original response, I was suggesting to err on the side of caution because I know plenty of people who are sensitive to spoilers. The part in the documentary I had in mind when I said “be wary” is a segment that shows a few MOTHER 3 UA-cam reviews where they directly speak about/show specific clips of major story moments in chapters 1 & 6. I certainly don’t think knowing what the curveball is beforehand would ruin the experience for a new player, but there is something to be said about letting the game surprise you on its own. This is all subjective of course, so thank you for sharing your own perspective as someone who knew about certain plot points ahead of time and did not feel like it affected the enjoyment of your experience! @@suninmyeyesyes

I'm currently watching Adventure Time, so this comment threw me off when I first read it 😅 I hope you enjoy the review, I put my heart & soul in it!
quick update, devil may cry 5 is better than metal gear rising revengeance, but both are not as good as mother 3
If we don't get any unknown snippets from N64, it's a lost cause for me.
There is one snippet of a MOTHER 64 conversation that I had not seen before, where Itoi speaks more about betraying the player: "In the end, I am making games because I want to mess with people. This time, I really want to make people say 'you're doing that!?'" He's said similar things in other interviews, but the specificity of this quote here is very interesting. A large portion of the film is about the anticipation of the N64 game's release, so we hear straight from the fans who were there for the delays, and from industry insiders who were around when the game was canceled. I think there's plenty here for EB64 fans in particular!
