Honestly the fact that the trans community sees themselves in Dipper is a testament to his character and how well written. Cause everyone has wanted to exhibit the traits that are considered masculine, and Dipper’s arc shows that you don’t have to be some 50s jock bully stereotype to be a real man. Like Stan says being a Man is about standing up for what’s right even if others don’t like you for it. And the type of man Dipper becomes is one that anyone can be proud to be. So while I don’t personally read Dipper as Trans I certainly don’t have a problem with Dipper’s arc connecting with more than just straight boys
I thought it was kinda weird how everyone made fun of his voice cracking, but then I started T and my mom and my brother make fun of me CONSTANTLY. It do be pretty funny to be fair
@@katrinsorokatkatyabalashov1597 yes I am aware, thank you. I, however, was talking about my personal experience with voice cracks. Unfortunately I can't experience voice cracks as a cis man due to not being one. Hope this helps ❤️
@@jaded-mandarin it’s okay. It’s just weird, that I already got used for dipper as average regular guy with regular teenage boyhood problems, which cis boy are experiencing in every generation, but people are headcanoning it as trans-coded behaviour. @@katrinsorokatkatyabalashov1597 I mean it's a headcanon. It's not hurting anyone, it's just people having fun relating to a cartoon character. Really not that serious
I (a trans person) love this head canon, but in an AU. Mabel and Stan care about Dipper too much to make fun of him for not being manly, cause if he’s trans that’d be much worse. I think he’s cis in the show, but I wouldn’t put it past the writers to put hints in when Disney wouldn’t allow it.
Same😭I love trans dipper but that episode would be so cruel if it was canon😢(I kinda just blur those parts of the episode out of my mind because of it lol)
I don’t think so. It’d be really cool if that was true, but that concept really seems like something that would really be more common knowledge. I mean, I’ve watched the entire in the making of podcast like 50 times (no judging I need a podcast to sleep ok 🥲) but haven’t heard anything about this
@@leonelzubieta8636things can change from the pilot and just google is dipper pines trans there’s a gravity falls wiki and someone cites their sources either way just let people have their fun
the only reason why i wouldnt like this theory cuz that would make a lot of what the other characters say in the show kinda transphobic if they are aware that dipper is a transboy like repeatedly questioning his manliness and calling him girly..that would be a nasty thing to say to a transboy even if they didn't act like a typical manly man
honestly same. it sorta works for characters who wouldn’t know if he was because the twins don’t live in gravity falls but Mabel specifically shouldn’t pick on him if it were the case.
@@octavia3608 the thing with headcanons is that nothing in the official media clearly states that they are or aren’t true and thus can’t be proven or disproven, so it’s left to the viewers’ thoughts.
It adds a lot of sadness to how he's treated, the way he's forced to do certain feminine things and other times demoralized for not being masculine enough, his isolating tendencies, he's stereotypical ideas of what a "man" is supposed to be
In all seriousness, when i was 12 (2016) i watched gravity falls for the first time and i resonated with Dipper on such a profound level that I started realizing that I might be trans. And here i am now, 5 months on testosterone. I've finally found myself, and it all started with Dipper. I love this show so much and Dipper will always have a special place in my heart.
Thats so sweet. I only watched the show recently (and loved it ofcourse) and i immediately grew attached to Dipper as well, i think if i had watched the show as a 12 y.o. i definitely wouldve felt the same way. I think Dipper reminds me of who i mightve been at that age, had i known i was a man, you know.
im a trans dude and i go by Dipper in my moms house, trans Dipper is my comfort i love it. it sucks not being seen as a man so often no matter how much you pass or how long you’ve been on testosterone, and being told you can’t be trans because you’re a kid, cause i’m 15 and i’ve been on t for almost 4 months now! i’m 100% sure i’m happier as a man, and the pure happiness you get when being seen as equal to the cis males in your life is just the best. i think seeing some of my own experiences in dipper make things feel like they’ll turn out ok.
To the people in the comments, he doesn’t have to be trans, or even trans coded in your eyes. But some people do relate to him as trans people themselves, and I think it’s kinda cool that people can find community even in tiny things such as characters in shows
Only reason I don't think he's trans is that he's doing what most boys do that age. Hell, so many of us were embarrassed by our cracking voice or being called boy instead of man back in late elementary/early middle school that I 100% identify with how Dipper was feeling in these clips.
@@ericcarvalhoferreira512 I know, but this isn't just trans men, it's nearly every boy that goes through what Dipper went through in this vid, where it's essentially impossible to say if he is trans or not since he's showing the same characteristics straight, gay, bi, a-sexual, and pre-trans boys all go through.
its not meant to say that dipper is trans, its just drawing parrallels to things that those of us who are trans have experience with, and yes while they are also normal puberty things, trans people have the same feelings towards our own bodies all the time, puberty or not
@@meeehl20 He isn’t canonically trans, but he definitely seems to be lightly coded as one as on the same way a lot of old villains got queer coded without canonically being queer.
I made this in response to realizing that my enby friend had a lot of good reasons to hc/interpret Dipper as Trans. Dipper has a plethora of moments where his journey into manhood could be seen as extra hard or be taken less or more seriously by the characters around him in the context of him being Trans. Nobody in his 4th grade class liked him, with him getting no valentines as a result of extreme bullying, which could be a result of transphobia. Grunkle Stan, being an old fashioned macho man, is the perfect person to put in the role of a simultaneous best friend and worst enemy to a Trans relative. He teaches Dipper to be tough and wants him to be tough, but also ends up bullying him for not being masculine enough. He loves him, but expresses it in slightly unhealthy ways, which a lot of Trans people, myself included, have to experience with elders who are only halfway towards accepting us.
Why are people getting all weird and defensive, it's called a headcanon, chill. "I'm not transphobic, but I don't think he trans-" click off the video. You are not the target audience. Click off the video. Let trans people have this, wtf. No need to get weird about it.
Hi, I'm (a) trans people! Headcanons are fine when they don't directly conflict with the text and the way Dipper is made fun of for trying to be manly is _really_ gross through this lens. Plus people are spreading misinformation about it being intentional, which is just not a good thing to do.
@@Deadflower019 I'm also a trans person, not a cis person trying to speak for trans people. And of course if you don't like the headcanon in this context that's completely fine, but I'm pretty sure this isn't the video you're looking for.
I did take a HC a step further by titling this video "Dipper Being Trans" instead of "Dipper Being a Trans Allegory." This is my legitimate interpretation of the character and titling it otherwise would do the video a disservice in what I'm trying to say with it. Plus, it brings my video more views if I leave it as this simple statement. His story is baked in transgender coting to the point that I think we're to the point of just needing one Alex Hirsch confirmation for this to be retroactively made Canon. But, that may not happen and it's healthy for people to disagree. Though, to the extent of the absolute transphobia that is riddled throughout this comment section... definitely not.
Alex confirmed no such thing; the only source I can find for this claim is some discussions on the GF fandom Wiki (which you happen to be in via a presumed throwaway account), and I'm finding another source from Alex himself that says Dipper is just his self-insert. >I'm going to cram a self-insert OC into Gravity Falls and there's nothing you can do to stop me! Oh wait that's just Dipper Posted on Twitter - Nov 19, 2014. And another source from an official interview between Alex and his sister Ariel, an interview where he blatantly states that the Pines twins are loosely based on him & his sister. ... Listen, there's really no trans allegory, let alone a proper transmasc representation. Alex is a cishet and so is his sister. Neither their experiences nor the Pines' experiences have to do with trans struggles. They were the struggles of puberty and discovering new crushes and relationships, and facing rejection.
The first scene is kinda relatable ngl. I’m AFAB but I feel more like a guy (or well closer to masculinity, I don’t wanna label my gender specifically) and I try to pass as a guy but then I still get seen as a female and it’s so AAARRFGHHH I personally never thought of him as trans, but I love the hc and it’s adorable :3
Im trans and now rewatching this, I just painfully relate to him 💔 i only pass to lil kids who think girls cant have short hair or wear pants at important events... but sometimes people in my school ask me if im a girl or a boy and that genuinely makes me happy.
I’m just reading through these comments, and like, guys it’s not that serious. I personally connect a lot with the hc that Dipper is trans, but at the end of the day, it’s just another lens through which to view his character arc. There are a billion possible arguments on a billion possible sides, and a billion possible explanations as to why Dipper is the way he is. Doesn't mean you have to shit on people's views. That being said, it gives a new dimension to Dipper's character if you consider him trans. A lot of people like fleshing out the backstories and mental states of characters they like, especially in this show where we don't get a lot about the kids' backgrounds. That's probably also why there's a popular headcanon that Mabel is some kind of neurodivergent, most often autistic. It's a new way to interpret her actions and behavior, based on small hints or features that people of the neurodivergent community relate to. It's the same with this headcanon
genuinely shocked that this many people are in fandom and yet are completely unaware of what a headcannon is. ppl are fully in these comments like “look im not transphobic but i don’t think he’s trans/he’s not trans” like yeah thats fine, but why are you gonna comment that on a comp that someone made about their headcannon? is it that cis ppl (and a few “pick me” babyqueers from what i see🫢) think that if these headcanons are allowed to exist it’ll threaten *their* existence or something? is it that ppl think ppl who enjoy these headcanons believe it’s actually canon?? i genuinely never understood why ppl care that much abt fighting queer headcanons. like nobody’s stopping them from making their own headcannons. anyways, enough ranting, it’s refreshing to see my little boy again💙
The way this title is worded is making it seems like this particular vid is one of *those* vids. It just blatantly says that Dipper is trans and in this day and age *those* type of ppl are so common that you can't tell if it is just a head cannon
Dude, literally the description of the video goes, and I quote: "It's not even an allegory anymore" This person right here is blatantly saying that Dipper IS trans when there is clearly no evidence for it.
@@agentmothmanedits The insecurity here would coming from the fact Dip wasn’t born a boy, therefore he worries he’s not one. The insecurity that cis people get is a different type of a similar issue.
@@agentmothmanedits i know, i know, but it’s a nice thought to have. i’d like to point out most people here aren’t saying he’s canonically trans, and those who are (people saying Alex confirmed whatever) are just a little confused
What I've come to realize throughout the months of making this, releasing this, and seeing all the reactions, is that, while it's not confirmed by Alex Hirsch himself, Dipper is an icon in the eyes of masculine Trans people regardless of his true gender identity.
Alex Hirsch has gone on record to say that Dipper and Mabel are identical twins. Talk about saying Dipper is trans without saying Dipper is trans… Also, I find it hilarious how people’s first response to this information is to mention that identical twins, in 0.1% of cases, can actually be opposite sexes. They find that easier to believe than the not even subtle fact that Dipper is trans. Let me get this straight. There’s a 1/250 (0.4%) chance that any given pregnancy will yield identical twins. There’s a 1/1000 (0.1%) chance that those identical twins will have opposite sexes. Therefore, the odds of both phenomena occurring is approximately 1/250000 (0.0004%). Wow. I feel like Dipper being trans isn’t all that farfetched in the grand scheme of things.
Alex Hirsch has ALSO gone on record to say that Dipper and Mabel are based on him and his "identical twin" sister. Yall do know identical twins can come from XO/XY chromosomes? It's either that or he probably just got identical and fraternal mixed up, because in the real world it doesn't really matter which one you use. Maybe retake biology....Lots of assigned boy/girl at birth twins call themselves identical cause they look just alike, or because they literally are. It's just rare. Alex has always pushed for representation and I highly love and respect the results from that seen throughout the show, but this seems like a reach....?
@@justme8125 Wow, okay. Remember what I said about how funny it is that people’s first reaction to this information is talking about the *slim* chance identical twins have of being different sexes? Let me reiterate that this has a 0.0004% chance of occurring. Rare doesn’t even begin to describe it. As if that’s somehow more likely than Dipper being trans… Although, I have to give you props for finding creative ways to explain away this not at all subtle hint as to what Dipper’s gender identity is. Alex Hirsch got the terms identical and fraternal mixed up? That’s a new one! The fact that he himself is a twin leads me to believe that he does, in fact, know the difference between the 2 types of twins. But hey, whatever floats your boat I guess. And what was that? In the “real world” it doesn’t matter which term you use? Well, since you’ve decided to make this all about biology, do you know where the crucial distinction between these 2 words *does* matter? In, you guessed it, *biology.* Biologically, the two terms mean very different things. If you want to get fancy, identical twins are Monozygotic and fraternal twins are Dizygotic. They’re distinct, not interchangeable. Just because Dipper and Mabel are based on Alex and his sister doesn’t mean they *are* him and his sister. Just because Alex is cis doesn’t mean that Dipper is cis. It’s almost certain that Alex intended on making Dipper FTM but was restricted by Disney.
@@452pokemaster Dude chill out, I am not reading your extra long defensive ass rant. You can watch LITERALLY ANY interview where Alex explains he was just like Dipper as a 12yo and connect the dots on so many of Dippers quirks that come from Alex. If you were a fan of GF, you would know he went into specific detail on how the twins are based on him and his sister including a bunch of blink-and-youll miss things from the show. Dipper was not meant to be trans broski. It's a good theory, but y'all are also forgetting this was in 2012? Like I said, it's a good head cannon, but bringing up the fact they're identical twins as a way to push that narrative just isn't logical. Identical Twins are more possible than a trans Disney character in 2012, especially with so much proof to denounce it. You learn about chromosomes in Biology or Health, forgot which, but it may be a good idea for you to read up on it.

Ay some people just love to project themselves onto fitcional character which can either ruin a character or... no it just ruins it most of the time. Not being transphobic, just saying if you want a trans character so badly THEN MAKE YOUR OWN.
Confusing Gender Dysmorphia with Social Acceptance. Every manly issue Dipper has had, was because others made fun of him. Not because he felt uneasy with himself.
Granted, they're very similar. The main difference is that gender dysphoria is one dimension of bigger social acceptance. Pretty much everyone struggles with social acceptance at one point. Although trans men espicially have to deal with it more. That's why this show is hailed by LGBT+ youth.
I see a lot of people in this comment section saying they don't think he's trans. Let me make the situation clearer. Dipper's canonically not trans. Though, since Dipper is a nickname, people thought it might be his chosen name and his birth name being something he just doesn't use anymore. But it really is just a nickname. Book 3 reveals that his name is Mason. However, that's not revealed in the show itself, and a lot of Dipper's reactions and insecurities are relatable for trans people, including me even though I'm a trans girl, not a trans guy. Dipper being trans is a very legitimate headcanon, and the only thing truly invalidating it a small piece of information that's not even in the show itself. So even if you don't think he's trans, let trans people have this. It's just a headcanon and it doesn't hurt anybody. One that has lots of evidence too.

i personally love the headcannon that dipper is trans, i know it’s not for everyone, but i think it mostly came from how the pines twins are canonically identical twins, and identical twins have to be the same sex at birth which would mean that one of them is trans, and everyone said it was dipper because of his struggles with other people seeing him as manly
Some of y'all never grasped fandom etiquette and it shows. Headcanons are personal and you don't have to agree with them. You also don't have to shit on them. If you don't like something, just ignore it. Fandoms are a space to have fun and express yourself, there's no point to have silly arguments over how other people interpret a fictional character
Thank you for reminding people of this. I personally think there's enough proof in the show to the point that, "Dipper Being a Trans *ALLEGORY*" wouldn't have been a title that accurately portrayed my thoughts on the character. Gwen Stacey is more of a trans allegory in my mind than Dipper is.
If anything he might be MtF and not FtM and likely considering that he has and wants to be a man so bad in order to conform so that he can be accepted and not from dysphoria, he does not want to be girly because it contradicts his desire to be a real man like the most valued men, he has low testostome, he is a big BABBA fan, he does not engage in that many manly activities, if anything Grenda and even Wendy more in common with trans men than Dipper does. It's likely internalising his fear of feeling girly so he strongly supresses his feminine side.

The amount of people getting all weird and defensive about characters being coded or depicted as trans is WILD to me 😭😭 Like it’s just like relating to a character in other anyway?? So what’s so wrong with trans or queer people doing the same? (Not to mention that in this case, Dipper was supposed to be trans. I honestly love seeing the ways Alex Hirsch still tried to write it in and make the community feel some form of representation :) )

If he really wanted to get technical about it guys grow longer the girls so that’s why on average we’re taller. When people say girl mature faster than guys it’s just that they stop growing first
Just for my own confirmation bias, in the flashback where dipper runs away to sulk because he didnt get any valentines, I think its kinda weird he goes to like a janitors closet or smth and not like a bathroom? This could be so he can cry in secret but also i feel like bathrooms are more readily available? Ive never heard of someone irl going to a janitors closet to cry lol. But it might be his only option if he has a hard time figuring out which bathroom at school to go to...just saying....
First off, I am NOT transphobic. I just don't think there is enough evidence that Dipper is trans. Most of his problems with being manly is just social awkwardness.
I feel that, too often male characters get lumped in as lgbt just because they’re not some manly jock bully Chad stereotype from the 50s. Now obviously I don’t mind headcannons as they are just fun and all that, but it’s also not impossible for a straight guy to be different from the stereotype
He isn't trans - he's just relatable to a lot of trans guys. Many of the challenges he faces in going from a boy to a man, are the same challenges they face in going from a woman to a man.
(this is gonna be a long comment heads up) when you think about it does make a lot of sense. the basic idea of my comment is based on realife logic based on them being identical twins and how its not possible for identical twins to be differnt genders. . Like obviously not all of this would justify as proof of him being trans, but its also a "kids show"(i put that in quotes becasue i still love this show and i am no longer a kid). But anyway again i say its a kids show so most irl logic might not apply but lets just say we are using irl logic for a moment. The Pines twins are identical, and identical twins only happen when a fertilized egg splits into two in the womb, which would mean they would have the exact chromosomes, which as we know our intial assigned gender is based on (X,X) or (X,Y) chomosomes in our dna, which obivously means identical twins cant be different genders. Obivously this would imply one of out beloved twins in transgender. Through out the show Dipper has a sense of fragile masculinity, which can tend to be associated with a trans ftm(obviously not always but it is common when they try really really hard to pass as a male). When we are shown his memories from his childhood we see he is sorta an outcast, which can unfortunately happen if it is found out someone is differnt than an average person (usually people associated with the lgbtqia+ community or different views on the world and so on). And throughout the series and through his memories we see how hard mable tries to make it clear she see him as her brother and also tries her hardest to just act the way an average sister would act with their brother (make-overs, joking about his voice, ect.). We know that she would obviously be aware he is trangender which wouldve likely been know from a young age based on his memories from years ago, so it implies his parents would've been very supportive of him and allowed him to go on hormone blockers once puberity started to hit, obviously he might be too young to go on testosterone, but still might be a possibilty considering some of the things he goes through with his puberity hit (such as more prominent voice cracks and the chest hair, ect.). The theory again can only be more backed up with real life logic, and as I said earlier, given that is just a cartoon meant for a younger audience mainly kids, they dont tend to alsways follow real life logic, but some of the scenes obviously help support the theory. . any way sorry for the long comment, its only because ive heard this theory before with a bit of an explaination to support it(which is some of my explaination) and i absolutely love this theory and love to help support it. If you read this whole thing I love you and am very happy you were interested enough to read it.
Thank you for not just spitting BS in my comment section and I love the support and effort you put into this. BTW, I'm willing to die on the hill of Dipper being trans.
I do like the theory, and the evidence for it. I have nothing really against it. Headcanon what you like, as long as you can back it up. However Dippers experience can also relate to a young preteen trying to find his place. He’s going through puberty, and often around older teenagers. He doesn’t feel manly, as he is a bit wussy, and is the smart one. Voice cracks do occur more when transitioning, but also occur during puberty as well. Also having Mabel being stronger than him, hurts his already fragile masculinity. I personally relate Dippers struggles more to being a preteen and wanting to fit in, as throughout the series Mabel, and Dipper hang out with older kids, and lie about being teens themselves. However, I can see how it can relate to a ftm trans experience, I don’t think that is the intent or purpose, although going from a boy to a man and transitioning from a girl to a man definitely would both cause similar insecurities.
Although, now that I think of it, there might be a slight problem with the headcanon. I support trans people, and thier choices, but I feel age should be regarded as well. If this theory was to be true, Dipper was already transitioned in that one scene where him and Mabel are in elementary and Mabel gets gum in her hair right before the school pictures. According to the internet, that flashback occured when they were in second grade. An average second grader is 7-8 years old. That’s wild.
I’m pretty sure he’s not bc Dipper is based on Alex when he was younger and Alex isn’t trans. Alex never confirmed any of that stuff for any of the characters.
im not trans, and i am a guy insecure abt his manliness, but dipper being trans is a cool idea that doesnt hurt anyone, and trans ppl being able to relate and feel comfortable with insecurities of their own thanks to a cartoon character is awsom and it rocks ^_^

I mean not really, there are many trans people who said they liked a name and would’ve named themselves it, but it didn’t really actually feel like them.
Honestly, he's kinda girly, but that doesn't mean he's trans. A girl having a deep voice and liking skateboarding doesn't mean she's trans, so why does that apply to Dipper?
It's just a head cannon. People like to have the characters they adore represent them. It's the same thing as saying you see a character as neuro divergent or something. If it doesn't hurt others, it's not a problem.
@@brady5006 But Dipper was born as a boy so him being female assigned at birth is completely wrong lol, headcanons are about something a character could or would be based on what they are like, but there's NO possible way Dipper is AFAB, you'd have to rewrite the entire show for that, which falls into the fanfiction category, which is totally cool but it's not a headcanon, because that's basically rewriting Dipper's entire existence.
@@emerz35A head canon is basically a speculation of a character. You described a rewrite, but this is more of a speculation. Maybe dipper transitioned at a young age?
I really don't feel like any of these are trans moments. Just him being insecure about misandric masculine stereotypes imposed on him by his surroundings (yk, pretty normal and reasonable thing. I have a transgender friend(FTM) who loves Gravity Falls, but especially relates to Dipper (and is his favorite character :D)!
As someone who relates to dipper im starting to get a little scared rn ermmmm

That being said, it gives a new dimension to Dipper's character if you consider him trans. A lot of people like fleshing out the backstories and mental states of characters they like, especially in this show where we don't get a lot about the kids' backgrounds. That's probably also why there's a popular headcanon that Mabel is some kind of neurodivergent, most often autistic.
Talk about saying Dipper is trans without saying Dipper is trans…
Also, I find it hilarious how people’s first response to this information is to mention that identical twins, in 0.1% of cases, can actually be opposite sexes.
@@justme8125
Wow, okay. Remember what I said about how funny it is that people’s first reaction to this information is talking about the *slim* chance identical twins have of being different sexes? Let me reiterate that this has a 0.0004% chance of occurring. Rare doesn’t even begin to describe it. As if that’s somehow more likely than Dipper being trans…
Although, I have to give you props for finding creative ways to explain away this not at all subtle hint as to what Dipper’s gender identity is.
You learn about chromosomes in Biology or Health, forgot which, but it may be a good idea for you to read up on it.

i personally love the headcannon that dipper is trans, i know it’s not for everyone, but i think it mostly came from how the pines twins are canonically identical twins, and identical twins have to be the same sex at birth which would mean that one of them is trans, and everyone said it was dipper because of his struggles with other people seeing him as manly

I agree
this is also a good interpretation!

Im pretty sure that the people saying alex hirsch confirmed dipper to be trans or trans-coded are just spreading misinformation (intentionally or not) but if he WAS then it rlly makes mabel and stan seem like jerks when they make fun of his masculinity.

5:21 "Mable 😩 this is stupid 😡"
First off, I am NOT transphobic.
I just don't think there is enough evidence that Dipper is trans. Most of his problems with being manly is just social awkwardness.
I feel that, too often male characters get lumped in as lgbt just because they’re not some manly jock bully Chad stereotype from the 50s. Now obviously I don’t mind headcannons as they are just fun and all that, but it’s also not impossible for a straight guy to be different from the stereotype
Isn't this video a joke?
yeah, i think this is more of a headcanon or something
It's mostly a cute headcanons, and he definitely isn't canonically trans because Disney would never allow that.
@@the_UF365 I absolutely love this theory and would also very happily die on this hill of Dipper being trans🏳️⚧️
Only thing is, he wouldn’t have to been trans like, VERY young (7 or younger) so I don’t exactly know if he would be trans
