Thanks for that clear explanation. A few years ago an echocardiogram showed that my mild to moderate mitral valve regurgitation had progressed to severe. After expert evaluation, A MitraClip was recommended and placed via the femoral vein in the groin. It was so easy from the patient’s point of view, with only one night in the hospital and no incisions. Three and a half years later it is working perfectly and I am very grateful.
@@sushilaananda3365 Thank you. The reason I ask is that I do have issues with my mitral valve, although they have been very stable and even improved with a change of lifestyle. I also have afib, but blood thinners give me unbearable nausea. I wondered if they were required because a clip is not tissue and might cause clots. I can take aspirin when I'm not on blood thinners. Anyway, hopefully it won't get to that stage, but it's good to knw what might be required. Thank you so much for your response.
@@xymonau2468 Most people who have Afib take an anticoagulant due to the higher risk of stroke with Afib. If you have tried the newer anticoagulants like Eliquis etc., and do not tolerate them, you might be eligible for a Watchman. I will be evaluated for a Watchman in the next couple of months. This is a device that is placed over the left atrial appendage, one of the main sources of clots.
@@sushilaananda3365 I was hopeful about that device, but many people in the US are suing the company who makes it, so do your homework and find out why. Also, I'm unsure if they give them to people with valve issues. I did read up a lot about it at one time. I'll take my chances, and continue to work on my lifestyle issues. That has helped a lot. I can tolerate one or two doses of Eliquis if I have to, so I can have an electric cardioversion, but they make me want to vomit all day. They also affect my emotions so that I can't cope with stress as well.

Plz let me know I cry 😢 all days and nights because I was living a normal life now I am worried a lot a lot . Thank you I advance
I wish I found your video sooner. I was denied a second Echocardiogram for two years after symptoms led me to discover I had mild mitral and Tricuspid Regurgitation May/June 2021. Being told my symptoms of chronic fatigue, exercise intolerance, and shortness of breath just walking to kitchen to eat was not heart related by my electrophysiologist who refused to test me or notate my worsening symptoms as I continued to get so much worse. Denied a second look even after my EKGs started showing right atrium enlargement in May 2022. I had to leave him as my provider so finally at the end of next week I finally get my second Echocardiogram. I won't know until then how much damage was done during that time I can only tell you simple acts of getting dressed, preparing a meal for myself, or even showering is almost impossible some days more than others and all my cries and pleas have fallen or deaf ears until now.

Thank you so much Dr. Sanjay Gupta for explaining this topic on leaky heart. It's a great help to us with heart deffect. I have MVP, as of now my echocardiogram shows ventricular hypertrophy & mitral regurgitation. Keep safe always & more power!
Have had regurgitation for decades and have enlarged left atrium but not serious enoughv for a replacement or fix. This is the first time I've heard about blood volume increasing due to regurgitation. That explains my enlarged left atrium. Thank you for this clear explanation
At 6.20 in the video you said I quote. "If the function on the echocardiogram looks normal or less than normal, this is suggestive that the heart valve needs fixing". What does this mean, if the test was normal. Don't understand that comment. I get all the rest of it. Thanks
@@jingwills6267 When your heart compensates for severe leakage it stretches more and it pumps blood more vigorously. That can be seen on EKG, so when leakage is severe, but EKG shows normal or less than normal function of the left ventricle it means that ventricle has already started to weaken so it's time to take measures.
Thanks for this great explanation Dr Gupta. I have a slight leak with my aortic valve but it doesn't affect me in any way. I can still run ultra marathons!
@@YorkCardiology Hello. My cardiologist labeled mine as Trace TV & MV not Mild but Trace. It read: The tricuspid valve appears normal/there is a trace tricuspid regurgitation. Same with Mitral Valve.

Thank you, so much for this informative information it has helped me a lot, I was diagnosed with heart valve leakage but I was told it was a mild one, now that I heard this I think I need to go again for another check-up, especially echo and angiogram
This video is incredibly informative and helpful. Thank you so much. I wonder if you can tell me whether volume overload could also lead to high systolic blood pressure with low diastolic blood pressure? If that were the case would it make matters worse to medicate for the high blood pressure?
I have a question! You mentioned if the echocardiograms shows normal or slightly abnormal heart EF you should consider surgery. Why would surgery be discussed if its in normal range?
Having leaky mitral and triscupid valves diagnosed same time as my Hashimoto thyroiditis 26 yrs ago.. nothing is changed so far. Will it get worse?? Have had 3 successful pregnancies (one c-section)..
Can you speak about ablation specifically for pvc/pac?. I get PVC and it feels like my heart stops and then starts. I never get a fast pulse. If I could describe it it feels like a baby kick in my chest and I can feel my blood flow slow then during the pause then everything goes back to normal. It's very scary. I've tried propanol and nothing has helped. I am thinking of ask my electo cardiologist for ablation. Just wondering what you thought of ablation for pvc vs AFib.
great information.. Do you think sometype of heart problem might be a reason for being unable to run long distances? I can ride and walk long distances but I can't run because my heart beats too fast and my lung hurts.
Hi we went to the Gp and he heard a little whistling sound on my husband heart .Never had any problems with his heart before he is 78 walks every day and not on any medication what could that be ?❤
Great vid. I have mitral valve prolapse. I get a heart ultrasound once per year and until this point, everything looks good. However, I do notice that I’m slightly out of breath sometimes when walking the stairs and such.
So can a person with a greatly increased blood volume have dialysis to get rid of the excess fluid? Fluid tablets don't always work well. I can take lasix until the cows come home and it doesn't do much at all.
I have this and it was so helpful. Thank you! I was wondering why I am scheduled to see my cardiologist every 6 months, even though I currently feel good. I also have sleep apnea and that affected my heart as well, even though it was mild.

Since i knew I got panic attacks and all day crying after I made tons of searches about the topic ... so scared will it gets worse 😫 😞 😢 it will definitely lead to moderate then severe then.....complications at the end.. right????? by how many years this will happen ???? Plz plz inform me I'm so panic 😭 I don't exercise or hard working to be tired, I'm healthy, I'm slim . But I stress a lot and worry a lot. Why did my doctor said this in a cool way!! As if there is nothing??? Why the check up after 5 years???? Is thus really normal??? Will it be moderate or severe after 5 years . Plz let me know I cry 😢 all days and nights because I was living a normal life now I am worried a lot a lot . Thank you I advance
Thank you. My mother 76 was diagnosed with this. She goes for an echocardiogram soon
Good news. Nothing requires surgery
Thank you very much for this, Doctor. It addressed a lot of my heart questions.
thank you. Very helpful. I have a murmur that has gotten louder over the years but I have no symptoms.
I came across a video by Austin Goh on youtube - 7 exercises to help with leaky heart valve - or similar title. He also has exercises that may help with heart inflammation. He is Chinese - very helpful and positive nature. Love watching his videos. Also look into Ayurvedic medicine and herbs that may help with heart inflammation. Also I take Turmeric and Ceyenne Pepper. Try taking taurine 500mgs, magnesium citrate 100mgs, and potassium citrate 99 or 100mgs 3 times a day and one dose before bed. Also try 100mgs of co enzyme Q10 or CQ10 plain 1-2 times a day. Also look into Acupressure. There are points you can stimulate or put magnets on that may help. On youtube there are many acupressure videos.
Oh. How r u know
How are you now ?
did you get your echo?
I just love your videos! You have helped me make decisions that have proved to be the right thing to do. Patients really need to be pro-active…and you give the pros n cons in an easily understood way. Thank you so much Dr. Sanjay.
Thank you Dr, it’s very useful information for me, I do have a leaky mitral valve but at the moment I’m not symptomatic.
I was diagnosed with Trivial reguritation should it be monitoured. I have a family history of heart failure. No NHS follow up. Had one echo cardiogram. Does weight loss help.
Yes hawthorn berry, ceylon cinnamon, Mediterranean diet
well done and many thanks, very well explained, I am due for open heart operation within the next 3 months due to Aortic valve leakage.
how are you feeling now? Did you get a repair or replace?
Thank you so much Dr. Sanjay Gupta for explaining this topic on leaky heart. It's a great help to us with heart deffect. I have MVP, as of now my echocardiogram shows ventricular hypertrophy & mitral regurgitation. Keep safe always & more power!
Not a good diagnosis. Get more information.
Have had regurgitation for decades and have enlarged left atrium but not serious enoughv for a replacement or fix. This is the first time I've heard about blood volume increasing due to regurgitation. That explains my enlarged left atrium. Thank you for this clear explanation
If you don't mind asking how old are you and do you work out?
@@antonioharrison9807 71 y.o. pool in the backyard to swim laps. When the pool is too cold, walking
How many years u have had it
@antonioharrison9807 I'm 71 y.o. I walk or swim
@zakerapathan8582 diagnosed with mitral stenosis 40+ years ago when pregnant for my first at 30 y.o. Had rheumatic fever as a teenager.
At 6.20 in the video you said I quote. "If the function on the echocardiogram looks normal or less than normal, this is suggestive that the heart valve needs fixing". What does this mean, if the test was normal. Don't understand that comment. I get all the rest of it. Thanks
Wnats to know that too
Me too, it confused me. I have to rewind it twice. I hope the doctor will go back to that statement. Thank you!
I've had aortic regug since I was a kid.
I have moderate with no symptoms & work out like I am 19 & im 48.
Just hope it stays this way👍
@@superpoacher6711 How are you doing 2 years later - still feeling good?

Helped calm my fears and concerns. Thank you so much doctor! ❤.
Just discovered your channel & I'm so impressed by your knowledge, style & understandable presentation of complex issues. Thank you, sir!
So nice of you
@@YorkCardiology Hello. My cardiologist labeled mine as Trace TV & MV not Mild but Trace. It read: The tricuspid valve appears normal/there is a trace tricuspid regurgitation. Same with Mitral Valve.
Thank You for this explanation!
Thank you for taking the time to explain this to us.
Great explanation on blood volume overload. Very well explained. Thank you so much!
Brilliant. I now understand for the first time since my mitral valve has been leaking for 30 years why. Never had it explained before. Bless you thank you for your precious time.
Did you have surgery? Did the leak get worse?
Thank you so much for all your expert knowledge educating in an understandable way for us
Very interesting as I now have regurgitation on 2 valves after a substantial PE
I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it
Thank you so much for your extremely clear communication style on this topic.
I have 3 valves with trivial regurgitation, cardiologist says my heart is normal but I have all the symtoms. I can't even manage minimal excercise.
I'm hoping for advice
A cardiologist told me it was like a rubber band and it could just snap one day. Hm..he suggested a pacemaker so when you mentioned rubberband, it was aha that's what he meant. Thank you doctor for explaining it so well. Leaky valves and rubber bands sounds almost like an engine 😀 I.e.fanbelt...
Thank you Dr Gupta. You are a star…and a bright one at that! ⭐️
You explain things so well and clearly .thank you once again. Weare waiting for another video.take care
Could one be misdiagnosed with POTS if they have minor tricuspid valve leak?
I had my aortic valve replaced due to severe leakage, mine was done through a mini sternotomy. It is not something I ever want to go through again.
Love you Dr. you are the best!!
Thank you Dr. Gupta. God bless you to continue your good work
So nice of you
@@YorkCardiology you are a wonderful caring doctor. Your patients are very lucky to have you
thank you doctor for a reassuring video. i have an appointment with the surgeon next week as i'm about to have aortic & mitral valve replacement surgery but just nervous as i'm 61 male and type 1 diabetic. Does this make it more risky having diabetes?
Is the surgery key hole ?
Dear Dr. I have Moderate Crystallization of the Aorta, can you do a video on this. My Dr. didn't give me a diet or any way to combat this, if possible. I would love to know more.
Would donating blood help those of us with confirmed leaky aortic valves ? Also, I really appreciate your videos. They make complex topics from the doctors office easy to understand, thank you !
I would like to know this
Good question, would really like to know the answer to that also.
Lovely to see you again. As usual very informative
Does this include tricuspid valves. I thought this surgery has higher mortality rate.
Thank you, so much for this informative information it has helped me a lot, I was diagnosed with heart valve leakage but I was told it was a mild one, now that I heard this I think I need to go again for another check-up, especially echo and angiogram
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. My Dad’s heart grew bigger. Can you please make a video what cause’s heart to grow bigger!!!
So interesting! Thank you Dr. Gupta! Your so gracious!
Great job of explaining , the best one on here !!
This video was so helpful, thank you for this clear explanation 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for the work that you are doing. I truly appreciate you 🇿🇦
I have a moderately leaking trycupid valve and have had micro valve repare what a knight mare
Hi William, In what way was the repair a nightmare? Did something go wrong with the operation?
I have tricuspid regurgitation
I have mild. Is it ok?
This video is incredibly informative and helpful. Thank you so much. I wonder if you can tell me whether volume overload could also lead to high systolic blood pressure with low diastolic blood pressure? If that were the case would it make matters worse to medicate for the high blood pressure?
As always thank you…so grateful for your videos
so is mitral valve regurgitation a form of leaking valve?
"mitral valve regurgitation" is how cardiologists describe a leaking mitral valve.
Explained very well 👏👏
I have a question! You mentioned if the echocardiograms shows normal or slightly abnormal heart EF you should consider surgery. Why would surgery be discussed if its in normal range?
I caught that too and had the same question.
Hi we went to the Gp and he heard a little whistling sound on my husband heart .Never had any problems with his heart before he is 78 walks every day and not on any medication what could that be ?❤
Anything nutritionally can do for mitral valve insufficiency?
Great vid. I have mitral valve prolapse. I get a heart ultrasound once per year and until this point, everything looks good. However, I do notice that I’m slightly out of breath sometimes when walking the stairs and such.
How r u know. I also have issues with valves for 6 years now
Also found with mvp, first time after 10 echos in a matter of 5 years
Hi Doctor love your videos. Do you have any advice on beet roots for lowering blood pressure? Thanks
So can a person with a greatly increased blood volume have dialysis to get rid of the excess fluid? Fluid tablets don't always work well. I can take lasix until the cows come home and it doesn't do much at all.
Excellent as always. Many thanks.
I m cricket player and I have mild valve regurgitation what I should please and I have anxiety
Great explanation sir
I have this and it was so helpful. Thank you! I was wondering why I am scheduled to see my cardiologist every 6 months, even though I currently feel good. I also have sleep apnea and that affected my heart as well, even though it was mild.
What valve regurgitates for you? And also is it trace or mild or severe?
Anyone on medication has to see cardiologist every six months.
Hello Dr. , I was wondering if you accept new patients on a telemedicine settings? I just need to check my heart. I have no complaints at the moment
