Vitamin K2 and the bone heart connection

  • The bone-heart connection: the health benefits of Vitamin K2.
As we age, there are a couple of pathologies that start becoming more prevalent - Frailty and heart disease.
Our bones become thinner and weaker due to a lack of calcium and this leads to osteoporosis and makes us more susceptible to fractures.
Coronary artery disease also becomes significantly more prevalent and is characterised by increased calcification in the walls of our coronary arteries.
This is interesting because the osteoporosis is characterised by a lack of calcium and coronary disease, characterised by too much calcium and both pathologies are often found in the same patients.
To prevent osteoporosis, many patients take calcium supplements. This is even when body calcium levels are not reduced. However recent research suggests that calcium supplementation could actually increase the risk of coronary artery disease. In a recent publication, researchers conducted a systemic meta-analysis of 13 double blind placebo controlled randomised control trials and found that a dietary calcium intake of 700-1000mg per day or supplementary calcium intake of 1000mg per day significantly increased the risk of coronary heart disease.
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
Even more interestingly, a recent meta-analysis found that calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation did not seem to reduce fracture incidence in community-dwelling older adults anyway.
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
So this is all very interesting. Could it be that as we get older, the calcium which is meant to get deposited in our bones, gets deposited in our coronary arteries instead? Could this therefore be the reason why increasing calcium intake does nothing for our bones but actually increases heart disease?
Since these observations,a lot of interest has focussed on Vitamin K and in particular a sub-type of vitamin K called Vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is a fat soluble vitamin and helps activate osteocalcin which helps take calcium out of the blood and deposits in the bone. So if there is a shortage of vitamin K2, the calcium does not bind to the bone and therefore the bones get thinner.
In the tissues especially in the smooth muscle cells, there exist proteins called matrix GLA proteins and they have the function of removing calcium from the tissues but to do so they need to be activated by Vitamin K2 and vitamin D. So if there is a shortage of vitamin K2, these matrix GLA proteins do not get activated and therefore become non-functional and calcium does not get removed from the blood vessels and therefore get accumulated there and cause heart artery narrowings.
Interestingly there was a study in the journal of vascular research in 2008 that the amount of non-functional matrix GLA protein (I.e that which had not been activated by vitamin K2) was directly correlated with the magnitude of vascular calcification. The more non-functional matrix GLA protein concentrations, the higher the likelihood of vascular calcification.
So is there any evidence that making a concerted effort to increase vitamin K2 can be helpful?
Well - yes - there have been several studies that have confirmed this.
The Rotterdam study took unto 5000 men and women above the age of 55 and followed them up for 8-11 years and found that diets rich in Vitamin K2 were associated with a 50% reduction in arterial calcification and cardiovascular death. In fact mortality from all causes was reduced by 25%!
Another study, known as the PROSPECT study looked at dietary K2 levels and coronary disease in 16000 women and found that with each additional 10mcg/day of K2 supplementation, there was a 9% reduction in cardiovascular mortality.
In 2015, there was another really another very interesting study known as the knapen study which showed that increased Vitamin K2 levels (doses of 180mcg day) resulted in reversal of coronary artery calcification and restore arterial flexibility.

There are UA-cam videos re this… near instant pain relief, then the injection starts a cell-signaling from the joint telling the body to lay down fresh cartilage. Like stem cells but without the risk. The K2 you take will definitely protect the top of the femur (trochanter) that links like ball-and-socket with the pelvis.

Saw my hygenist again recently and told him he has to also take k2.... bought k2 for my own mum to take as well as her doctor has put her on calcium carbonate for months... the many things we don't know! I really really hope that k2 really will help us put calcium into the right place... I hope months or years down the road we won't get a shocker that this calcium and k2 thing is actually wrong. A few years ago, my wife and I started taking D3 and K2 MK7 (8,000 to 12,000 IU D3, and 100-600mcg respectively). One potentially related improvement has been a definite reduction in my wife's Diastolic pressure, which is now almost always under 80, when it used to be much higher. Her Systolic is also much lower and now normal when she did have pretty high BP. However, the Diastolic has improved far more relatively, suggesting her arteries are now more flexible and, hopefully, less calcified in effect. This observation has been based upon carefully logged pairs of readings taken twice a day (so 4 in total each), every day, and weekly averages noted. There's a clear and steady improvement since taking K2 MK7. That may not be the only factor, but it seemed worth mentioning, because so few people have any actual evidence to work on. I have it all in a Spreadsheet, and there is a quantifiable improvement.

I’m here in the US, Northwest Washington State. At 76 and in good health, I was recently prescribed statins by my usually reasonable doctor (he recently started taking statins himself and I think that influenced his prescription for me as well). My recent blood work showed borderline high cholesterol. My cholesterol levels, over the last 30 years, have gone up and down and always been supposedly too high, but I have not taken statins. This last time my doctor was more insistent that I should take statins. Instead of doing that, I had a vascular ultrasound of the carotid arteries performed and the results showed that the arteries were fine…actually below the average for my age for any plaque build up. I have taken Vit D for years and it was always coupled with K2. My diet is great…lots of plants and some meat and fish…low refined carbs. I liked your presentation and it has given me further ammunition for my argument against using statins and compromising my liver, brain and muscles. I live in an area that is far away from large cities and use well water. Between walking in the fresh air and swimming in Puget Sound, I have it pretty good. At least, I will die happy❤

I am 74 and was put on statins in my 50's by my NHS doctor in the UK as that was the normal recommendation at that time. After a few months I complained to the doctor that I was getting serious side effects including (amongst other less obvious ones) deep muscle pain in different places, migraine headaches and lack of labido. The doctor insisted on me staying on statins and I tried at least four different types all with similar effects over what seemed like a few years. I do not remember the exact time scale. I then decided I could not put up with the pain any longer and that I would come off statins against my doctors advise. Within a period of about 3 or 4 weeks the deep muscle pains had reduced significantly and all other side effects diminished gradually over a longer period.
Having been so badly affected by statins I have looked into the research on statins and I do not understand with the very small benefit in most cases why they should be recommended by any doctor except in the most serious circumstances.
It is also noteworthy that I was not put on CoQ10 when I was put on statins as this was not part of the NHS recommendations although I have since found out that CoQ10 should always be taken to replace that depleted by the statins.

That is why it is so important to keep abreast of the most current research. Thanks for what you do! BTW - I worked in public health for 35 years..

Hi and thankyou for taking the time to post as it's a great help for patient's like myself. I had my widow maker HT last May with two stents, since then have followed the standard medical advice. However I have become increasingly interested in D3 and K2 synergistic effects, i take both as a supplement every other day. I have calcium hardened arteries and had been taking antacids prior to my HT. I have now changed my diet to be fresh home cooked food with smaller amounts of meat and more green veg. I have also eliminated sugar and most dairy. I make my own sauerkraut to boost fermented food. I have no idea if my arteries are improving, but I feel good. Other things I have notice are as follows: acid reflux gone away, piles have disappeared, athletes foot gone completely after 40 years of break outs, dry scaly skin on ankles and elbows gone, joint aches especially elbows gone. I hope this is because my general metabolic health has improved. My weight has dropped off without really following a diet and the fat from my stomach area has almost completely gone. I am seeing my cardiologist in June and want to ask about reducing my statin which is 80mg/day. Just wish I had understood more before my HT. Thanks again keep up your good work.

There's mag and vit c in this cap too. Seems like a high quality supplement, but I'm questioning the calcium as I am plant based, and eat greens every day. I also had an infusion of "Reclast"... not sure how that affects the heart or the bones. I've been told a couple of things. The technician who administered the reclast said it is supposed to stop the advancement of the osteoporosis. I'm still taking the calcium, and my next appt. w the cardiologist is in 10 months or so. I have a pacemaker, but avoid dietary cholesterol, so don't have a problem there. I believe the osteoporosis is caused by eating a high protein diet most of my life. Wish I could do it over. Live and learn. Don't know what to do about the calcium supplements, but what I'm learning is that it may be doing more harm than good.

Vitamin D increases the bodys calcium uptake. That's why it's better to get the calcium from food, and not from supplements.
In some cases vitamin D with calcium supplement have resulted in too high calcium levels in the blood. But they didn't supplement with K2, which might prevent that.
Calcium from food is always better!
But I still wouldn't supplement with calcium!
Your dose of 100 ug vitamin K2 is the minimum. I would increase that to 200 ug. That's more likely to be the right dose. There's no known risks with more K2 than that.

Last week I had a blood test for upcoming surgery and all results were within "acceptable parameters" including ldl, triglycerides and hdl. My sister had the same high cholesterol and took the statin, then medication for angina, high blood pressure and was told it was because of calcified arteries. She paid for a private calcium scan and it was completely clear. They told her there was nothing there and did not have angina. She quit the statin.

I realized a drop in my calcium score from 409 to 339 over the course of a year during which I made major lifestyle changes and added K2-MK7. I cannot attribute this to K2 alone but I am sure that it helped.

I started K2 after listening to you Dr. Gupta during the pamdemic. At 77 with weird heart symptoms, after Zio patch my MD and Cardiologist recommended statins but I heald them off for 6 months. Now Im awaiting a scans, did start the lowest dosage of statins. When i have heart symptoms, I do a 18 to 20 hour fast, then eat lightly for a few days. As a veggie, i have lots of options

Thank you for caring! Your information is stellar and so helpful and meaningful for me. I am supplementing with K2 and D3 and now annatto tocotrenol vit E. What dose of K2 would you recommend? I was stented 7 years ago. I had 99% blockage in the widow maker. No heart attack. I am doing fabulous - started intermittent fasting two years ago, lost a lot of weight, exercise daily, and supplement...and am happy working in my field of Speech Pathology. Of course my Cardiologist wants me on a statin, which I continue to refuse. My triglyceride and Hal levels are very good.I want to get the particle test for the LDL:) Thank you again:)

Great information all the way around; thanks for breaking it down. I’ve been taking Nattokinase 5000 to 7000 FU per day for about 18 months now…. I’ve had significant and impressive improvements in every blood marker; but I’m a high stress guy regularly in high pressure situation, accordingly my blood pressure is the toughest to contend with. Adding K2 to the regimen now…thank you!

Lovely to hear you talk about this subject. So many doctors are not aware. Also you know the difference between K1 and K2 - many speak of vitamin K, not realising there is more to it.
This video is ideal to send to a friend who is new to this subject. Thank you.

I suffered AF and have had an ablation. When talking to my cardiologist I asked if my arteries were cleared he replied "yes for now". Not once has any doctor or cardiologist discussed diet. Thank you for you excellent videos and I now too take D3 and K2

Don’t we need a certain amount of vitamin D3 to be taken with the K2. Can you expand on this
