I was the consultant who took Patrick to task (a little) over his comments the last time he ranted on consultants. I like this list and think it could have a dual purpose, if the prospective client would be willing to explore these questions and answer as if I was asking them. Look, if both parties throw all their cards on the table at the same time, are open and honest, then you get a better basis to work from. As for not wavering on price (his last point), here's the key...know what you want and be able to tell the consultant what that is. Give him/her a legit target and they should be able to give you a solid price. You don't change, I don't change. Congrats on a good video, Patrick.

I agree this is a good video about consultants and valid questions to ask. The only point I take slight exception on or maybe find humorous .... clients would often ask for the best price and then when the other 2 bids possibly come in lower ... they typically ask for the price to be matched or beat without understanding scope, experience or quality differences... but I have to admit the decision-makers in these cases were usually not the CEO. Often we would walk from those opportunities ... and a lot of times we were back when the project failed.

*pre-question* : ask yourself _“what do you want”_
    1. What made you an expert in your field?
    2. Why did you become a consultant?
    3. What is your experience with a similar company?
    4. What is your most successful client?
(ask if you can call the client)
    5. What’s a project where you failed?
As always with Mr PBD, there is always more detail than that, would you like me to put more detail in to this summary?

I'm a lawyer and an accountant, once in a while I get clients like you Pat, 90% of the time I don't take them, because I know they will be up in your nose all the way, even if they don't understand what you're doing, they will send you daily emails, go to your office or expect you to go to theirs, as if I didn't have my own business to run, then spend an hour talking nonsense about themselves, and then when the job is done, it's a pain for them to finally pay up what was agreed (not to mention they try to lowball you all the way to the end), then you go silent, stop answering emails or calls. 20% of clients will give you 80% of your trouble, it took me years to learn this, but just drop that 20%, with time I learned to identify them.

MAANNN! I sail in a boat just like yours Patrick, only smaller. have made my share of expensive mistakes hiring consultants. Every point you shared is, like always, precise, transparent, absolutely fair, and bang on the bullseye! You sir, are consistently, openly, saying things in your content, that others like to keep under hush hush. And the best part is, none of the pointers in this video are intimidating or condescending in nature. they're absolutely fair and practical. The experiences you shared in these 10 points, i have gone through 5 of them personally, needless to say have lost more money than i'd like to mention. Thank you!

I am so amazed by the kind of focus you put in your company after making any mistake so that it doesn't get repeated in the future. What I can say for sure is that you have saved so much money, time & frustrations that people go through when they make mistakes in this area (if they take this stuff seriously). Thank you so much, Sir, This is pure gold.

Great video! I just want to add that for most "small businesses" these questions are almost luxuries when you consider the cost of a single hour with these people. If I'm spending X amount of money on that hour how much can I sacrifice listening to this person's stories? A small company with limited resources needs to find a way to answer these questions BEFORE the consultation...

Right on spot, Technology Consultants are really not sure about the cost structure or even position offering to new consultant.
It's a pleasure to view your video when recently I got an interview with a consultant firm from Denmark.
Topic is project about insurance business in U.K. and taxes in Health Care business in Denmark.
    Shaky business!

Since you like to highlight my comment this much, why not write a bit more about the cause.
Technology is actually a book that is constantly updated (changes) with new content by users or stakeholders from any business - technology - society.
Programmer wraps programming language around natural language to display bits to form symbols on screen.
The chronic issue lies in data types, there are 8 primary data types stored in whatever names that client, tech editor, chief editor, and related professions would like to name things that way. This increases learning curve as a way to increase entry barrier to any one, experts included.
Compatibility across system architecture is not all you want. One person with all the knowledge and skill about that ecosystem of yours is rare to find.
      You lost millions. It's common.
There is a story about IBM and New York Billing System with the cost increased 5x from estimated cost $200Mn and then the second contractor took the project and cost grown 7x.
Project runs over deadline is common. You do need a documenter to track the whole development. As you mentioned, a team from a-z.

#6 gives me the most success with advisors, namely, holding them accountable for the financial gains or losses from their advice.

Mr. PBD, as an entrepreneur and passionate about entrepreneurial and personal development, I have to applaud you for what you unselfishly share with aspiring entrepreneurs. I have been engage in countless virtual coaching and this is by far the best channel for entrepreneurs, whether a start up, SMME or even corporate. You surely are one person in this industry who is so in alignment with your purpose, (You have a video on this) it is a great honour to share your content with my network. The one thing I admire of you and your content is not only the "What To" do, you clearly explain the "How To" with simple implementable steps, which I have realised is the biggest challenge entrepreneurs face out there. Bless you, your Family and your team. #TheGodfatherOfNetworking #TheGlobalConnector🇿🇦🌍 Ps: Would love to have you come to South Africa some time.

Great questions for anyone to learn. Unfortunately, I have been involved in auditing entities that hire lawyers and consultants and you will be surprised how much waste of time and money is spent on the bad apples. Prolonged projects and services that cost the business, nonprofits, and government more money than it was to solve the problem. For my personal businesses, I will use these as guide for receiving and delivering services. Thanks again.

These are fair criticisms but as a person that's worked in consulting -- many of these firms have high turnover and employees leave, get a raise and move to another firm - since every project is different and when firms fail to land meaningful projects - people leave and get frustrated. It isn't as cut and dry as "X Person was Bad that's why they keep changing firms" many times consultants are put in roles where there aren't doing actual consulting but doing the actual job that the company can't fulfill (staff augmentation).
Many advisory practices are simply bodyshops -- someone lands a project and "consultants" are just there to do the monkey work.

Hello my name is Elizabeth. I was recently being stalked by a frogger. I used to live in apartment complex and I lived there for four and a half years always lived on my own will accept the first year I lived with my daughter and she was on the lease but I took her off the lease a couple of years ago 3 years to be exact because she no longer lived with me. However since I was being stopped by a frogger he broke into my apartment shortly thereafter so that I knew for certain that I was being stopped. The apartment complex manager had so much anger towards me that she didn't even want to hear me or help me out. I call the cops and I told him that someone broke into my apartment and he went and checked it out but before that he went to the leasing office to see what the lease enough is have to say if I even lived there. And the leasing office told him yeah she lives there I mean they know I live there the ex manager assistant lived right underneath me. Anyways at least in office told the officer that if they have items there the person that broke in to my torn up door if they have any items there they're considered a tenant. So when the officer went there to investigate he found out that the frogger have brought some items with him and didn't kick him out for some reason I'm assuming because of what the leasing office said. Because I went by the leasing office and the property manager told me that if that person that's in my apartment has one sock one piece of paper that belongs to them they're automatically a resident that I had accepted them to move in. That's a lie cuz I don't even know that person. And now the lease enough is trying to evict me although I have not live there not even for one second since that incident happened and bring all these charges against me. I had told the manager from the very beginning that I did not know that person that broke into my apartment, and she's still accused to me of moving in that frogger. " WHAT IN THE WORLD"? I have been looking for an attorney that's specializes in my experience and it's been so difficult to get things done without an attorney to represent me. Basically I'm just asking for advice on what to do in this situation 🤷?
