Italy's New Largest Multi-purpose Aircraft Carrier is Ready for Combat Action

- Italy's New Multi-purpose Aircraft carrier, the largest warship Italy ever built since World War II, is finally ready for action. The ship can accommodate 30-34 aircraft, including F-35B and Merlin.
Thus, the Italian Navy has 2 aircraft carriers (Cavour and Trieste). That is the same as the UK, which has 2 aircraft carriers (HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales). In addition to the UK and Italy, Japan will soon have 2 aircraft carriers modified from its destroyers, JS Izumo and JS Kaga, to operate F-35B fighter jets.

The huge advantage of the Trieste AC, in addition to its flexibility as a ready-to-go amphibious assault ship, is its self-defense armament which includes 3 76mm guns, 3 25 mm guns and a VLS cannister that can hold up to 64 CAMM-ER SAM missiles. That's incredible when compared to the lightly armed British QE class carriers. This ship should be a model for futures ships of this class.
Gli aster 15/ 30 sono 32 non 64
Cause we built the QE class on the cheap - not even enough sailors for her escorts! Trieste will serve the Italian's proudly.
It is more efficient for the amphibious assault vessel to just have point defense systems and leave long and medium air defense to escorts. Of couse, the RN is having difficulties manning their escorts for their carriers.
Meanwhile, the US Navy has 10 amphibious assault/helicopter/STOVL ships.
@@ycplum7062Trieste will generally only carry short range defense systems: Aster 15 are short range missiles, and the 76mm are now the standard CIWS of the Italian Navy. @@mutteringmale Well, you should revise your history book. Italy entered WWI in 1915, well before any clear winner could emerge. It entered alongside the Allies, as it was seen as the last battle for independence against Austria to unite all the Italian-speaking people. The alliance with Austria had previously been chosen only to avoid a premature confrontation. It's something like the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact: Both nations knew there would eventually be war, but both preferred to postpone it. Austria, due to the disintegration forces driven by Balkan nationalist movements, and Italy, due to the necessity of preparing its army. WWI was a huge victory for Italy and its monarchy, as it managed to move the borders to the full Alps arc, a more defensible position, and secure Trieste, one of the most important and wealthiest ports in the Mediterranean Sea. Not to mention the financial help received from the UK and the US to contain the red communist movement right after the war ended. According with the Italian Admiral Credendino, the LHD Trieste can operated 20 F-35B.
So the Trieste with the Cavour can operate 35-40 fifth-gen fighters, more than the French Charles de Gaulle.
This is a good step for the Italian Navy, for the first time we surpassed a powerfull european Navy in air-naval asset.
CdG it's a CATOBAR carrier with nuclear power. Even with less aircrafts, when operational, it's far superior in term of projecting power, allowing more missions, with more payload, further away from home.
I also don't expect the Italian navy to be able to fill both aircrafts air wings at the same time, realistically you'll only see one of the two carrying F35s.
The key element tho is "when operational". Having 2 smaller carriers provide a high chance that at least one will be operational at any moment. Having a single "silver bullet" type of ship like the French De Gaulle means you'll have no carriers for about 30% of the time, and in case a single fortunate enemy strike or a very unfortunate incident manages to damage the ship, you'll be down your entire carrier fleet.
That why the British, having to pick between 2 conventional STOVL carrier and a single nuclear powered CATOBAR unit, chose the first option. Now the QE are far larger than Trieste, but still, the concept is the same.
@@12gark Actually Italy, like India, and UK when had the Invincible class(or like UK with Q&E in some training like in the pas), wants to operated both the ships.
But you ask why?
The Cavour is an CVL(Light Carrier) used mainly for support the fleet in the sea.
The Trieste is an LHD, which will use for Anphibious operations along side the future LxD(future italian LPD which they will replace the San Giorgio class LPD) in our 2nd fleet.
The Trieste can be the admiral ship TEMPORARY only when the Cavour need to go back in the port for upgrades or maintenance.
@@CriscCiaddu wanting to operate both ships is one thing. Putting F35s on both ships at the same time is absolutely another.
There will barely be enough to even try it if you include the airforce (now the orders are up to 40 F35B, but only half are for the Navy).
Cavour will be the one carrying the fighters, and the LHD will operate as base for helicopter unless Cavour is out of service for any reason.
Now if open war explodes somewhere and you are in absolute need fighters more than everything else, sure, the airforce will prove its F35Bs, and Trieste will sail with Cavour and both fully stacked, but outside of impending doom, this won't happen.
There is a reason if they classified the ship as LHD despite having the exact same capabilities as a carrier than Cavour.

Well, to be fair, Garibaldi is basically out of service. She'll be decommissioned sooner or later, and aside from a cataclysmic event, she won't be launching aircrafts ever again.

Traiest?....is the name of city Trieste!

You cannot compare the Triest to a QE class aircraft carrier one is 38,000 tonnes the latter is 80,600 tonnes. The Trieste is a landing helicopter deck and a really good one.
The QE class is a full blown offensive Blue Ocean Aircraft carrier. Designed to wirk as a fkag ship of a any Nato carrier group.
Trieste is Primarily designed for multi-role operations, including amphibious assaults, air support, and humanitarian missions.
The Queen Elizabeth-class is Designed specifically for naval aviation operations and air power projection globally.
Queen Elizabeth-class Typically operates with an air wing of around 40 aircraft, with a maximum capacity for up to 70.
Trieste Can carry up to 28-34 aircraft and helicopters, "carry" being the operative word.
Trieste is not primarily designed for high sortie rates, its focus is on versatility and less power projection multi-role capabilities.
Queen Elizabeth-class is capable of sustaining up to 110 sorties per day in surge conditions, making it superior in continuous air operations.
The Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers are built for a specialized role in air power projection, whereas the Trieste is a versatile but less focused air operations platform.

30-34 aircraft? That’s impressive if right when you compare with the Queen Elizabeth class in a size, cost and capability comparison. I’m sure there are many other things that aren’t as obvious as using these basic statistics. Still well done Italy.
30+ aircrafts including helicopters. Realistic scenarios you'll never see more than 12-15 F35Bs on Trieste. The rest will be helicopters and drones.
The ship size is limited for a ship that should be able to fulfill the task of an LHA, but should still be quite functional.
Cavour is slightly smaller and met expectations no problem during her life.
@@12gark I wondered if it would be something like that. I hope UAVs allow us to finally take full advantage of all that space on the QE’s. We can’t undo what’s done, it’s an interesting comparison for other nations to make when planning to expand their capabilities though.
@@icolky5272 QE are a much larger platform, and a larger platform will always provide more capabilities.
The Trieste will mainly be an helicopter carriers, unless Cavour is unavailable for any reason or doom is impending. Trieste and Cavour won't be launching fighters at the same time probably.
Both Italy and the UK chose STOVL carriers, and STOVL operation require a much longer time to launch and recover aircrafts, and the F35Bs will have much less range and payload than the F35Cs. Probably the reason why QE won't be carrying 30+ fighters each (aside from availability, at the moment the UK is stuck with 48 total, which isn't much for 2 80000t carriers) is because you won't be able to launch and recover all of them at the same time. Having 40 fighters and only launching half of them is pointless. There is a reason why the US Navy uses catapult on its CVNs, and a reason why they have 20+ helicopters on their LHAs.
Hopefully, drones will increase the effectiveness of STOVL carriers, and the QE class will prove effective if needs be (and we all hope they'll have nothing to do for a long time).
Better than the uk's carriers.
Sadly can't really disagree, the UK ability to combine different roles into one platform is crippled by an MOD staffed by stuffed shirts that find it hard to be innovative " Oh no, old bean, an aircraft carrier must just have aircraft - bad form to buck tradition y'know" Supprised they didn't have a sailing rig fitted to save money! In my opinion, with the spread of the hypersonic missles tech, CA are obsolete in the terms of 'strongness demonstration'. Right now a Frigate able to shoot an HM can easily destroy a CA. It's like when, in the late '20s of the past century, nations were still building Battleships, even larger, but anyway obsolete because of the opening of the CA age. One day all those large ship will be scraped because their effectiveness will be passed by their supply need in therm of war efficiency.
By that logic the only valuable naval assets would be (nuclear) submarines are they are virtually invulnerable against any type of airborne threat.
Carriers will still be useful simply because they are platforms to project air power and drone power.
HMs can still be intercepted and shot down by conventional point defence, we just need to perfect the existing tech and adjust to the new threat. I would be more worried about suicide drone swarms than HMs.
@justsam100 tò counterattack missles a CA Need tò carry a lot of Anty missles ammo that could results useless against certain kind of missles. In my opinion its more effective having 10 Destroyers with troops transport capability than 3 carrier inside a fleet.
Let's take an easy example. 2030: China attacks Taiwan. Let's pretend that by then China possesses 1000 missiles with a range of 5000 km which make Hawaii easily reachable. If an aircraft carrier can carry (being thrifty) 20 interceptor missiles, to destroy 3 aircraft carriers China would have to drop 63 - easily interceptable - missiles. If by pure chance these missiles were to be at least - not easily interceptable - 50 would be enough. If they were difficult - hardly interceptable - 30 would be enough, if they were not interceptable, 3/4 would be enough. Considering the middle possibility among the aforementioned valid, with a cost of 50 million dollars China could destroy 3 latest generation aircraft carriers (7500 sailors, 300 planes, 3 ships of around 100 tons each). Do you think it's smart to spend more on aircraft carriers? In my opinion the future lies in missile ships... I don't know if they exist but if they don't exist they should create them

Come on pronounce Trieste properly 😡
We dont need more weapon,we dont want ANY war😊

Speak for yourself, not having weapons it's what causes wars to erupt
I would have preferred the Trieste armed with phalanx system as the rate of firepower is more impressive than the Oto Melara THE Oto is good but not impressive, even if the shells are advanced. What if this ship were to meet a swarm of drones? 👏🇮🇹
Difference is the 76/62,can engage aerial targets 8 km out, with guide, proximity rounds - the phalanx is good for 1800 meters, max, no vt fuse or guided rounds
You shoot flak rounds and saturare the area with shrapnel at 8km distance.
You get more out the otos than from the phalanx
I don't think F-35B's cost that much anymore.

We Italians care little about aircraft carriers, weapons and warfare, so much so that I came to know this news by randomly poking around on UA-cam.
At best it's money wasted, at worst that ship will serve a purpose.
Where is this when our soldiers are in the crossfire of a falsely allied country and a terrorist faction?
I bet an enlarged version of this could be a STANDARD EUROPEAN PLATFORM ... ESPECIALLY if someone fits rhe US ectromagnetic catapult (which compared to steam ones has very very little footprint ). Sinle purpose carriers make sens ONLY if SUPERCARRIERS
This special looks a lot like the United States Marine corps expeditionary, aircraft carriers, I have a feeling a lot of its features were taken from the United States Marine corps.
Would make sense to incorporate the latest lessons learnt by one of the best amphibious forces in the world.
Its name is pronounced Tree-est-ay.
AI say no
Too many YT video narratives are read directly off a 'computer screen' or written script, without the voice-over having any clue on how words are actually pronounced. They may even be computer AI generated. This is an increasingly disturbing phenomenon of a computer culture, that is completely disconnected from the 'audible' world.
The Italian ship "Trieste", is pronounced: "Tree-este."
👍👍‼
..."TRY-EST" ??... TRI-ESTE!... c'mon!...

Whats with the twin conning towers like the English Queen Elizabeth?
Italy was famous for its public health system, but this system is going to ruin and Italy spent the money of italian tax for this useless ship, useless for italian self-defence.

Still the same in the end, considering most of the time only one (and often neither) of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales could be considered operational and combat-ready 🙃
Please, before pronouncing words from other languages, ask Google Translate or other software a hint about the correct pronunciation. The pronunciation of "Trieste" in this video is absolute butchery.
Problem with Italy, is military is controlled by Left wing President and not Right Wing Prime Minister.
@@MilesNauticus The president is the commander-in-chief of the Italian Armed Forces and chairs the High Council of the Judiciary. The president serves a seven-year term, with no term limits. The incumbent president is former constitutional judge Sergio Mattarella, who was elected on 31 January 2015, and re-elected on 29 January 2022.
A Catholic leftist politician, Mattarella was a leading member of the Christian Democracy party from the early 1980s until its dissolution. He served as Minister for Parliamentary Relations from 1987 to 1989, and Minister of Education from 1989 to 1990. In 1994, Mattarella was among the founders of the Italian People's Party (PPI), serving as Deputy Prime Minister of Italy from 1998 to 1999, and Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2001. He joined The Daisy in 2002 and was one of the founders of the Democratic Party (PD) in 2007, leaving it when he retired from politics in 2008. He also served as a judge of the Constitutional Court of Italy from 2011 to 2015.[2]
The President is a centrist, btw. Don't bring US polarisation to Italy. We have a more nuanced political history and scene :)

In Sicily for months there is lack of water to the popolation, but we can have the Trieste, this is sad.
Do you seriously want to compare LPH and destroyers to a real aircraft carrier like the QE's?
What will happen when Elon Musk cancels the F-35 programme, will this leave the carrier with no planes. This may also happen to the two British carriers
He will make noise, but Congress will not let that happen. There are too many international contracts, and the number the US already has delivered makes the plane here to stay. Plus the military-industrial complex won't stand for too much of his antics. They will rally Congress to strike his space contracts if he pushes them too hard.
@keithgainey7853 Giusto!
no problem, above the Trieste we will place the Lockheed Martin UAPs that they are now keeping hidden
All built in my city La Spezia, from the aircraft carrier to the guns of the Oto Melara. Here we build the best ships in the world, both for civilians, yachts and for war.
"ALL BUILT" in La Spezia? The Trieste was built and launched in Castellammare di Stabia.

Ships are a big target for hyperdonic antiship missiles
That’s the job of the carrier group’s escort vessels
hyper missile, what are your expertise? this missile can't be controlled after launch, because the velocity creates plasma around the hull, no com is possibile, he can't correct trajectory, nothing! Until now we have never seen it in any test's.
Hypersonic missiles are overrated weapons, only good for fixed targets. To hit a ship they have to go down to subsonic speed and then become normal targets.
Check your facts dude, cause hypersonic missiles aren't meant to hit moving targets
