Great video! I always loved how Firaxis added a few cool features in the second game, like bonds between soldiers, Chosens, super-aliens and... that one Sonic-like Advent timer... It keeps the gameplay fresh and outstanding from the first game.
One thing I like about XCOM 2 is how scrappy it is. Your operations officer, your lead scientist and chief engineer are literally making educated guesses and coming up with stuff as they go along. Really helps sell the underdog status of XCOM.
Got to love that the background plot for XCOM 2 is that the aliens kidnapped you during the base defence mission. And then forced you to play The Long War mod for years on end.
I hope they don't go the Terror From the Deep 2 route but honestly I doubt they'll avoid it. Maybe they'll add more aspects to make the underwater setting more interesting at least. I would prefer something like X-Com Interceptor 2 instead but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
Fun trivia, I managed to get Dragunova to sneak through the sewers alone, and one-shot the advent general, and then stealth the whole way out again. It was extremely satisfying.
I think you forgot to mention that the other thing they added in WOTC is the Bond ability system that would give your units a bit of an edge in battle, like extra action and combine strike. Also to add, if you combine use both the Reaper's Claymore and other unit's grenade, you are able to double the damage you have in hand, making it one of the best ambush or Blitzkrieg maneuver to ever perform.
amazing review. One of my favorite games. I have many hours playing the base game and the expansion and with the mods you have a completely new experience
While starting a sequel from the bad ending is rare among games in general, it isn't unprecedented in X-COM like games. There's this X-COM inspired game called UFO:Aftermath released in 2003 and its sequel UFO:Aftershock also starts from the bad ending of the previous game. I wonder if the makers of X-COM 2 got some inspiration from that.
The Templars would be so much more interesting if their leader was Zhang from the DLC instead of a random dude. Triad member, international agent and then psionic guerilla leader.
Nice review, I see the next one in four months :v Seriously good job on this, and I do agree with most of the points you made, but with a single caveat on the music. I'd say the TLE dlc music tracks are far better than the base game's or even WotC.
Can’t believe I wasn’t notified when this got published. Another great video! Really enjoyed both the insight and the humor. Good luck on that soon to be 1k!!
War of the Chosen: 2/3 really great. • The assassin is dangerous due to her mobility, invisibility and stuns. She can be difficult to catch. • The Warlock has powerful psionic abilities, shield himself and create psi-zombies. • The Hunter sits in a corner until you walk up to him and tap him on the shoulder. Similarly: • The Skirmishers are renegade Advent soldiers who are practically Mandalorians, they are walking arsenals. • The Reapers are pseudo-cannibalistic stalkers with marksmen rifles, IEDs, and questionable morals. • The Templars are... there? They have Covenant energy swords I guess?
9:39 The other the line-up song in the base game is, imo, amazing compared to the one in WoTC. I dunno why there isn't (if there is, how?) an option to change the WoTC to the base game line-up track.
Do you have faith in Firaxis' ability to make a good sequel without Jake Solomon? I havent tried chimera squad, nor am i that interested, aince i heard it was made without Solomon. I wish i could be more optimistic for the future. Thank the Elders for XCOM 2 mods. Highly recommend Covert Infiltration
Xcom 2's music is more Heroic, guess to fit with being humanitys last heroes. While Enemy within is more dreadful, like a desperate struggle against a monstrous enemy.
I can not recommend Long War 2 and Long War of the Chosen enough (along with Modjam onc you're skilled enough). It makes the game much longer, more complex, and you can actually build a barracks and have time to use the technology you worked so hard to build up (for more than a few missions). Xwynns and DerAva taught me everything I needed to know about the strategy layer, and how to have extreme patience in playing the missions.
Damn excellent video, how don't you have more subscribers yet? Also the mods on steam are great, but the customisation in wotc is a bit janky in my opinion as many of the stuff don't align or don't mix well together, but the mods make it worth it (clone army
if you cant beat Xcom 1 on normal then you WILL NOT beat Xcom 2 on easy. and those special missions WotC adds (if you select not to integrate content) filter players HARD.
I love explosives and flamethrowers in XCOM. It is impressive, I disliked the Heavy in EU, but the Grenadier has more nuance and more utility. Honestly, I think I like all of the classes in XCOM 2, all of them have been the perfect solution at some point.
Really wasn't a fan of all the extra RNG rolls XCOM 2 added, Dodge, explosives can crit, melee can miss AND crit, Guardian Perk is a flat 50% chance to fire again, most of the weapon mods being incredibly powerful IF they roll positive, standard explosives MIGHT set units on fire, honestly the list goes on. And then there's the mission timers, they feel like a duct tape fix for bad AI, force the player to play worse, instead of making units with abilities and AI to support them to counter exploitative play Loved XCOM 1 and Long War 1, wasn't a fan of XCOM 2
Yeah we ain’t getting an xcom game anytime soon :( after midnight suns poor sales 2K is gonna play it super safe and work on Civ 7 Edit: I hate being right
For me the game got 100% ruined and Unenjoyable because of timers in every single god damn mission. I hate timers in games no mater the game. And i especialy liked the 1st game because you slowly could set up perfect tactics and you could commando arround the maps etcetc.
They did that on purpose cause turtling made the first game too easy. It's also why in Enemy Within they made it so meld expires, rewarding rushing. I wish they made the timers a bit more forgiving in this game thiough.
The Long war mods has ruined base Xcom for me. it is a much harder experience that just kicks you in the gnards and keeps kicking you until you muster the will to get up. at that point it gets way more engaging and more fun. Base Xcom compared to Long war, is such a freaking breeze. after having completed a Long war on Commander, i for the fun of it tried out base xcom 2 on legendary. And it was just so much easier, like i had evolved my game knowledge and tactics so much from that one campaign that everythign else just seemed like childs play.
Fun fact unless you play on the harder skils the game is lying to you about that hit chance. But in your favour. When it says things like 60% it's actually higher. It knows ppl don't understand chance so it lies in your favour.
Remember!
It's not an x-com game if you don't miss a shot with a 96% chance of success!
That'll happen on average every 20 shots.
You take a lot more than 20 shots per mission.
*99%
Four times in a row
From that distance troop should just go in Mortal Kombat mode, uppercut.
Babe wake up, another xcom 2 video that shows how it stays peak even almost 10 years later
Great video!

A modern space sim with X-com elements would be interesting.
My party consists of nothing but Gordon Freeman and Hatsune Miku. "No Gordon, Scott is not a weeb, your being paranoid!"

Still fully holds up. An absolute must-play for anyone even remotely interested in sci fi stories and/or strategy games.

I can't believe you didn't talk about the Photobooth and how fun that is.
It's a fun feature, just didn't know where to fit it in.

13:45 Sniper's face looks like John Fallout
9:25 well, you can pretty much ignore the Warlock as long s you have psi shields and kill his zombies before they explode

11:22 in war of the chosen you can basically keep the avatar project down in perpetuity during the end game and play as long as you want

Firaxis devs have the talent and the experience to pull it off, it just depends who steering the ship now, I think.
Chimera Squad is an excellent spin-off, and choosing not to play it is only depriving yourself of fun.
Go watch Veracs review of chimera squad. It's millinial writing at it's worst
@@andreasfiltenborg4952can't exactly say xcom 2 had no corny dialogue either haha. especially the chosen
The reason we don’t talk about when the aliens miss us is because the aliens just don’t miss us.
12:19 plus they didn’t remove contradictory dialogue about the info
Great review of my favorite game of all time!
13:32 i dont think this would really work; id think "wow thats such a low chance"

1:55 based on the end credits that’s what the premise of XCOM 3 will be, lol
5:32 so they added the whole tired mechanic in WotC
I guess it's time to start up another game of X-Com
"Phoenix Point" next perhaps?
That's on the list, but it's going to be a long while till I get to it. Next review is something sorta similar to Xcom though.
if you cant beat Xcom 1 on normal then you WILL NOT beat Xcom 2 on easy. and those special missions WotC adds (if you select not to integrate content) filter players HARD.
Just use the grey missions to farm endless exp
Lets be real. Shen's last gift was kinda too easy especially with bluescreen rounds.
@@dillydraws yeah most new players don't instantly know what's op or rush to good upgrades

I did have to turn off the music completly when you listening to it all the time it became disturbing and annoying.😁

Ive been trying to beat this game on Iron Man mode for like 5 years
I've done honest iron man, the game crashes too much to play it without saves

Good stuff
The chatter in this game gets really annoying after a while. Apart from Tygan and the Hunter.
