I had such a lovely betta and he was like aquarium peacekeeper. He was calm until platies start to fight, then he goes and flare at them until they stop. When my shrimps finally started breeding I was scared that betta will eat them, I looked at his behavior a lot and saw multiple times when he sees newborn shrimp and just curious about it, observed and never tried to charge at it. such a good boy, I miss him. my current bettas in general goes well with shrimps but I saw attempts to charge at shrimps
That's what my plakat, Midas, does for my guppies. They'll start chasing each other and he will go up and flare at them or get in between. I had never seen this before and found it so funny. Thanks for sharing!
@@jeromeverzosa7901 I've tried with larger shrimp (same size with my betta) and my betta scared of him at first lol. But now they hanging around their tank together everytime
I love the recommendation of letting the betta sit in a breeder box to get used to them. I've used this to check agression with other tank mates, like guppies. Your channel has such fantastic advice, thank you for sharing.
I've had 3 Bettas with shrimp and they've all been great. Heavily planted tanks is the key. And a sweet little Betta is like a double safety. I've seen two of my Betta fish snap at snails but never hurt them and was only a one time thing. Well fed fish and plenty of hiding spots and I think it's fine
This is my analogy with bettas as farmers and shrimp as chickens The betta is a farmer called joe. Joe has a flock of chickens ( or shrimp). Joe generally leaves them alone but if he gets hungry he will have an occasional snack of chicken nuggets. Bob is also a chicken farmer but he's incredibly greedy and eats them all. James loves his chickens and never eats them. Tim can't stand chickens and destroys them all ( naughty James ). Just a silly little analogy about how it greatly depends on the personality and the setup of the fish and thank to make it work
I bought a troupe of blue dream shrimp and put them in with my betta. It was the most expensive meal he's ever had. But just when I thought he killed them all, out of a rock comes this RED cherry shrimp, which I never bought. I don't know where he came from; he must have been a teenie tiny baby who was with them and I overlooked it. I immediately put him in another tank where he now lives with some amanos and rasboras. He's my little red shrimp who became king.
My veiltail wont tolerate tank mates. Tried shrimp he ate them. Tried snails he was aggressive with them too. Tried pygmy corys nope wouldnt tolerate them either. Think I got myself a bad ass lol. Great video, thank you
Very nice presentation. You are right, it all depends on the temperament of the betta, but in general I don't think bettas and dwarf shrimp are a good mix. The bettas may leave the adult shrimp alone, but they won't hesitate to make a meal of the fry. Also, they have 2 different temperament requirements. Bettas do best kept at Temps of 78-82 F while dwarf shrimp do best at Temps of 70 to 75. Shrimp can take warmer temperatures, but it speeds up their life cycle. I'm glad I ran into your channel. I just subscribed subscribed.
It’s a chance we take because every betta is different, I had shrimp with a male Betta for over six months never had a problem and my shrimp were thriving having babies I probably had about 25 to 30 shrimp in my tank. added a female betta she killed all my shrimp. That’s my experience fish FAM 🤜🏼🤛🏽
I feed my turtle, feeder guppies. I bought a dozen and instead to my (now pleasant) surprise, I got 10 guppies and 2 shrimp (by mistake). I placed the shrimp in with my betta and they seem ok with one another. The betta is more curious and swims up to the shrimp. He flared at first but after a few seconds, he let his guard down and swam the other way. Now he just swims around and the shrimp do their thing. Pretty awesome how I got a happy little coincidence like that as I never even considered buying shrimp. But now that I have them, I love them. It's awesome watching them scurry around the floor of the tank, eating any fish food the betta misses and clean it up. My betta is a koi betta. They have the calico like appearance of a koi fish and apparently he isnt aggressive at all.
I Crocodile Dundee my betta fish, for some reason pointing at him bothers him so I do it whenever he's being bad and it always makes him back off. So I kind of trained him to leave the shrimp and snails alone, by pointing at him whenever I saw him acting aggressively towards them. Now he mostly ignores them all, except if the shrimp move really fast then he'll start to go after them but usually lose interest immediately. And he has one snail he HATES and always wants to fight, I think because he has stripes.
I did it all wrong, but it worked for me. My (late) dragonscale beta was alone in a highly planted 16g when I added the cherry shrimp. He would follow them around like a puppy. As you say it’s probably not a good thing to it that way.
I think Bettas should have tank mates. Both of my Bettas live in separate community tanks with Neons Tetras, Platies, Endlers, Otos, and Neocaridina shrimps. They don’t both anyone, enjoy swimming with with other fishes, and try to steal food from the shrimps eating 😆
I put my male beta in my 29 gallon community tank. I had to add additional bubbling so my Cory’s could breath so he keeps to a quiet corner of the tank with the floating plants . He flared for a couple days when I first put him in but the other fish ignored him and he stopped . Lol
My betta is in a 10g shrimp established tank with a huge Java moss ball. He will hit the moss with his tail to get shrimplets to jump for a snack. He also made a cave in the moss.

My betta seemed to pick off a lot of my small cherries right off the bat, but after a few months they are very well off and the two parties leave eachother alone, the babies are still up for grabs but there’s so much guppy grass and duckweed in my tank that they do very well at hiding

It might help to lower the water as much as possible. Less water pressure will help but it will also make it easier for him to take breaths at the surface of the water. U can also fast him for a day or two or feed frozen daphnia which also helps them poop. I hope your boy feels better soon!
