      1. Hair is looking dope bro.
      2. I love my FX3 and returned the A7C personally mostly just because rolling shutter drives me nuts (we all have our pet peeves). The ZV-1 and FX3 have next to none which is why I have kept both. I came from the GH5 and GH5s (still have both) which also have pretty much zero rolling shutter and CCD cameras before that.
      3. Very happy to see you still grinding on UA-cam. Soon I will get back to posting to my channel and getting some subs too. Great to see you growing! Keep it up!!!!

      @@techchomper Thank you so much... mostly for my hair compliment as I'd had a rough pandemic trying to figure out my hair identity and even more stupidly, I happily ended on mullet--I'm grateful that was the extent of my troubles and I get to make videos. Speaking of which, yes you need to make some more! The fact you got a good chunk of subs out of four videos is a strong indicator that you'd blow up pretty quickly with some consistency. God knows finding time for anything is difficult though, but I know you have a unique take on cameras and not just coming from the GH5 but just in general that'd be valuable, so definitely do it! Brian, great review and thoughts on the A7c. I own the A7c and have gotten to like it more and more over time. I'm a landscape shooter, so the video specs isn't what matters to me, but the weight is why I bought it. I am waiting for the A7cII to come out, while a bump in megapixels would be nice, the one thing I wish the next version will have is 2 card slots. Again, nice job on the review!

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому +2

      That's definitely one thing I probably should have added with this "review" is that I use the a7c mostly for video, so it's interesting to hear your take as a photographer. I didn't even consider needing a second card slot, but I can see how that'd be a problem for photographers like yourself. I wonder how doable it is to fit that into the same size body. The grip in the fx3 and A74 is so much bigger, and I wonder if most of that is due to the dual card slots... I'd also love a full size HDMI too but even if they don't change anything in the a7cii but they sensor, I'll pick it up as soon as I can too. The bump in mps and to 10bit is an easy upgrade for me... But selling this a7c will be a harder choice! Thank you for watching and commenting; I really appreciate it!!

    Good review. I'm on/off about the A7C and hope Mark 2 version comes out sometime this year 2023. You are in luck about dials. I've noticed many lens makers are including an aperture ring. Just like my old film based cameras, all had very few dials but every lens has an aperture ring. When I got into the digital photography after a decade layoff from photography, I noticed the lack of aperture rings. Now we don't need another dial and can keep the camera simple. BTW, you have a wonderful young man.

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому

      Thank you so much! And you're right about all of that, and I don't need another dial to control aperture. Yet, if they couldn't add a scroll wheel on the handle, they could make the exposure comp dial at the top customizable like it is on the A74. Then it's only a software shift. Either way, it's just a nitpick on my end.
      I do think the A7Cii will be announced at the end of this year, and I will definitely preorder it as soon as I am able. I just love the size of! Thanks again for your kind words and taking the time to comment; much appreciated!

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому +1

      I actually use Premiere Pro and recently have had a lot of difficulty managing color space with HLG3 because I think they've updated their color management workflow whereas from what everyone tells me Resolve is the best for rec709 conversions. However, I still always use it on my A7C. Here's how I edit hlg:
      ua-cam.com/video/mz6cIjVAGsA/v-deo.html
      But recently, I've just been interpreting my footage as rec709, overriding the hlg2020, and then when I drag it into the timeline, my sequence settings are rec709 and I can color grade with those free luts from my video or I just adjust accordingly.
      Yet, I will say it's easier to do this when I'm shooting indoors with controlled light because I can just expose normally, but outdoors I think I need to change my zebra settings because I was getting more overexposed portion when I just interpret my footage that way.
      Do you use Resolve? Do they have a built in rec709 conversion for hlg3? I think Sony gives away a free LUT on their website if not...

    It's true- the "take everywhere" aspect is the real key to this camera. I use a Sony 35/2.8 Zeiss as my daily, or the TTartisan 50/2 if I'm zone shooting in the street. In either case, the whole kit weighs well under 1.5lbs. The quality is absurd for that form factor. I live in NYC and never know what kind of situation I'll be in- have yet to bet let down by this little beast. • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому +1

      Great question, and I completely get it... On this particular video, I did not stabilize any of my footage for a few reasons: 1) the most obvious, this was a very labor intensive video with which I didn't want to add an extra step for; 2) I did not travel with nor have good enough compact wide angle lenses to account for the crop of the stabilization; and 3) I wanted to illustrate the real world usage of the A7C.

      Yet, in a travel vlog, I just deal with it, but any other situation I may use a gimbal or catalyst. It's sort of the consequence of a massive sensor in a tiny body, but it's a trade off, I don't mind because it's such a quality camera. I highly recommend you pick it up!

      Great question! The image quality, I would say is leagues better than the iPhone 13. My wife has the 13, and I help her make content and it's very frustrating and limiting, especially with video and especially not in great lighting. However, the phone has great stabilization and software for pictures and it is good for quick videos (for reels, etc). Yet, for anything else, it's inferior. The difference in sensor size is the culprit, but for most people, still, the iphone is enough and the cinematic mode is cool. I added the bluetooth remote which allow me to start stop the video and control focus tracking with the left hand when i need it. There is a hole to attach or clip it somewhere. @BrianCatalano  Рік тому +1

      I don't own the zv-e10, but all my experiences with it, I think it's a much better camera than the zv1 (just due to the sensor size), and I could imagine that if you only could get one camera to start your videography journey with, I'd get the zv-e10. However, the zv1, because of it's form factor, is the perfect pocketable, point and shoot camera and great to pair alongside my interchangeable lens cameras.
      In an alternate universe, I may have just gone APSC and started with the zv-e10 and then moved up to the fx30, so I do think there is a case to be made for sticking to a crop sensor ecosystem now.

    Thank you for the video. Would be interested to learn which lenses you use because I’m using lenses with an aperture ring so I get by with only two dials instead of three although I would agree three would be nice in a pinch. So Sigma I-Series DG DN primes or Sony small G lenses provide that aperture ring. Let’s also hear what else you want in the A7C II besides 33 Mpixels, extra dial, and 10-bit color or is that enough?

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому

      That's really smart, picking lenses with aperture rings, so you get to free up the dials for shutter or ISO. I did make a lens video recently for the zve1, but I didn't think to include that specification when hunting for lenses. Truthfully, I tend to always shoot wide open and regulate exposure with a vnd or crank the shutter. I either use the fx3, A7C, or zve1... And each camera, down the line has less dials, where the zve1 basically only has one, so I've almost become used to not having them. Yet, every time I use the fx3, I remember why it's nice to have three dials!
      So, for the A7Cii, the only other feature I'm hoping for is dynamic active stabilization! I can't imagine they won't put it in, but if they do, it's an easy buy for me! What about you, what are you hoping for?

      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому

      Thank you so much! Now, that's a tough one. The xt5 will have a sharper image and more color information, and you probably can produce a generally overall better end result. However, the autofocus is still slightly behind Sonys, it's analog dials may be difficult to just pick up and use, it's an APSC sensor, less lens options, and there's no flip out screen, which would not be good for me.
      I think the a7c is a far superior camera for beginners with files and general ease of use. You also have ton of lens options.
      As far as sending content to the phone, I'm not sure which would be easier. I've never had much difficulty with Sonys imaging edge software, but I've never used it for videos, just photo.
      Really the flip screen is a deal breaker for me, so much so that I might prefer the xt4, but the A7Cs autofocus, simplicity, and full frame sensor gives it the edge still.

      That's a great and difficult question. As far as image quality they are pretty similar especially if you aren't using full frame lenses. For me, I'd go with the A7C because of the improved color science, autofocus, and the flip out screen. I would always choose a full frame sensor when given the choice. Also, I use APSC lenses on the a7c all the time as well as I have so many cheap full frame lenses from third party manufacturers that you could eventually pick up so you can also use the whole sensor. So you get a crop mode cam and a full frame one for the price of one.
      However, if you don't vlog and do mostly video, the a6600 maybe a better option due to how affordable all the APSC lenses are...

      I think that's a difficult question, but a good one... I'm actually making a video, sort of, about this subject now. Now for my needs I like compact travel lenses that I can vlog on, which usually gets me to a 24mm focal length. Sony makes three compact lenses specifically for the A7C (24, 40, 50) and Rokinon/Samyang make really good 24s and a 35. However those are specific to what I like to shoot but I have also used a massive 85 1.4 on the a7c and although the balance is a bit off, it didn't bother me, meaning any full frame lens, primes or zooms, can work well on the a7c no matter the size. I also recommend Smallrigs cage (3212 I believe, it's linked in the description) which gives the camera a much better grip and more weight for when I do use heavier lenses. So it's really up to you, what type of shooting you're doing: real estate, portraits, vlogging?

I also add vignetting as part of my color grade, so it's not the lens. Sometimes vignetting helps hide some of the shake but it's an effect I use to just get the focus more on the center of the frame. I do understand not everybody likes it. The stabilization is just a limit of the large sensor in a small body... And me being lazy in post! Vlogging on my Sony FX3 is so much better but it's hard to match the compactness of the a7c.

      That's a great question, and I still say yes... for a few reasons. Let's just say at earliest, they announce the Sony A7CII in October (which would generally be a fair estimation). It obviously could come sooner or later, but let's say it's announced in October, and we're lucky enough to get our hands on it in November or December (as I'm planning to pre-order it as soon as possible), but we get it in November then from today that's 10 or so months that you don't have the camera, and in that time, think what you could have learned? This is presuming you don't have a similarly capable camera already. Yet, I know for me, a couple years back, I was debating getting a camera under the same conditions, and I decided to not wait for my perfect camera but get the best one now and gain as much knowledge as I can. Then I could trade it in for the future camera that I wanted...and if I lose a few hundred dollars, it will be worth it in all the experience I gained. I'm glad I didn't wait...
      These cameras seem to be holding their value really well still, so... Say you pick up a Sony A7C for $1600, use it for a year, sell it for a $1000 and buy the A7Cii for $2000
      I think that's how I see the math with it.
      Obviously, they could announce it tomorrow, but I do trust "Sony Alpha Rumors" and there's been no rumblings about its release until the end of the year.
      What camera do you own now?

      I think it really depends on the use case scenario! If you could get your hands on it for a week with a good lens, you'd see how ridiculous the quality difference is... But again, it may not be necessary. I just checked out your content which looks great as is and is doing well, so you might not need the bigger sensor!

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому +1

      Agreed! The stabilization of the A7C is its weakest component. However, Sony's Catalyst Browse will clean it all up remarkably well. Yet, for a video like this, it would be so labor intensive that I'd probably still be working on the edit, but I probably should have included a small portion within the video to show how it works... Thanks for the critique!

      Hello, if you're asking does the Sony A7C have IBIS, it does. The in-body image stabilization could be better, but it's solid enough and you can always use Sony's Catalyst Browse for gimbal-like shots.

    At the price of this fantastic full frame camera, i cannot afford changing every two years. This is stupid. A7c is very good in photo and video 4k and 1080p 60 and 120 fps. The standard profile is very good, no need for slog3. Ask yourself, you don’t need to upgrade. You can change every 10/15 years only. But even, i am pretty sure it would still be very good there. I don’t need more.

      @@BrianCatalano haha, I think people not p/v*graphy wouldn’t even notice it or think of it as a nice artistic touch, but my only idea was “is this samyang/rokinon lens really so bad?” But then again, I don’t think “outer” people will watch these kind of videos, so it can be polarising and I can see why. Another thing that caught my attention was shaky footage and it shows another weakness of a7c, it’s stabilisation is not good really, but I respect your courage to post it, since I think you shot it for yourself, not for YT.
      Anyway, I don’t want to sound like somebody who knows how to do it better, I don’t even shoot video 😅

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano  Рік тому +1

      @@victor.ivanov you are completely right though, I should have made a note that it was me adding the vignetting and not the cheap lenses (or was my vignetting masking theirs? Maybe, a bit of each...) Or was I attempting to mask the wobbly digital stabilization? Again, you're right that is probably the worst thing about the a7c, and a problem with most full frame cameras I have had. Canon's was notoriously bad for awhile, but then you see some m43, Panasonic footage and it's hard not to be envious. Yet, the a7c or FX3, being so compact, is so easy to put on a gimbal if indeed I was shooting for a client and not just for myself.
      Thank you for your response--I appreciate you clarifying your perspective. I am going to be more cognizant of my vignetting in the future!
