Have an X5M that I'm placing in the shop soon and was unable to identify the sound until now. Initially i thought it was rod knock but it might be a timing chain. Thanks for the video.
actually, it is one of the best videos to hear the chain noise. At leat N47 motors have their three-timing chains at the back of the motor and there is no way to check those chains without taking the motor out of the car. Only chain noise is an indicator (late indicator) that you are close to a costly motor replacement
Hi it’s possible to check the top chain with a special tool but normally when you have a noise like in the video it’s recommended to replace at least top chain and the middle timing chain. But I suggests to do all 3 🙂 in this case we only did 2 of them. After noise was gone.
Apparently the chain tensioner could cure this noise though I am finding mixed results in my research. Our X5 30D (N57 single turbo) with aprox 280k kms has this noise for a few minutes after a cold start. At first I did not suspect it was the chain as it sounds like a choo choo or chugging noise.
So was it the chain and/or tensioner or was it the crank pulley that was ultimately the root cause? I have the same noise on my X5 35d. Very loud when cold but once engine is warm, it’s barely detectable. I will be taking it into dealer next week but going to change engine oil tomorrow to see if anything changes.
@Ross Smith guess that means its stretched but not to the extent as the car in the video. The tensioner can take up the slack when theres sufficient pressure to the tensioner
@bmwtechicianspezialistindi8186 if the noise goes away when warm (after 5 mins of driving) what does that indicate? the vehicle in question also needs a new fan the bearings in the fan are gone
I recently bought an X6 e71 40D built in December/2013, and I hear a lot that the chain can snap without any notice, the car currently has 190K km-confirmed by the official local BMW representative because it was serviced in BMW Switzerland, I constantly listen for the rattle noise and I cannot hear anything, engine runs smoothly even when started cold, My question is should I wait before I hear the noise or should I just go ahead and change the chain now?
I recommend you to check The noise out, if it similar to The noise in The video you should start troubleshoot it. Start with The simple step Take off The fan belt if The noise follow The rmp. If it still there with fan belt off you should check The chain. Its not unusual on this engine. Do you have a chassis number i can check?
I think if you have The same noise and The same engine N57 you should try first removing The fan belt and if The noise dont disappear you should set in a special tool to check the timing chain, the tool will let you know if the timing need to be replaced
First we check the timing chain with a special tool and then we find out that the timing chain needs to be replace and after we replaced it the noise was gone.
@A B I see you also have the N57 engine? If you are lucky you may only need to replace the chain at the top. It can safe you for a lot of work. You need a special tool for this task.

I replaced the tensioner a week after writing the previous comment. The noise has improved though still noticeable on cold starts.

Hi same problem here did you fix it ?
Hi, what was your outcome?
Hey
when it's 25 degrees outside, you can't hear anything. comes autumn cold begins to be heard, could it be a fan belt?

If you are worried about the timing chain it is a way to check it. The dealers do have special tools for the job.

Worst thing you can ever do when there's a chain noise reving the engine
Its no problem. Timing chain can handle this easy.
Fucking hell, you revving and continuously driving it literally could have ended up soo bad
Yes it could. But it normally never happens 😇
