The Bass and Treble controls adjust the tone of the repeats as well. You can make it darker then a carbon copy or brighter than a DD-3 - it does not just control the tone of the reverb as said in this, and most videos. I don't touch the reverb on this unit - but use the treble and bass controls all the time to color my delay. I consider this a huge selling point for the pedal.
@Microphunktv I'm pretty sure that out of those people who went the extra mile to get a fully analog RE-201 that still works, 99 percent of them would never choose to bring it to a gig. Be reasonable.
AAAAAAAAAGGH! You have me agonizing over whether to sell my dd-20 for a re-20! I like the warp, reverse and twist functons on the DD-20 but tape is most regularly used. Great video, there's nothing out there that compares the units so well.
@EverydayRockets Thank you! They're a huge influence of mine. The riff from "Innuendo And Out The Other" (at 4:12 for those who don't know) is one of my absolute favorite guitar melodies.
Essentially, it's a gain knob. When the light is on, that means the signal being fed into the pedal is peaking and there will be some clipping / distortion. Whether this is desirable is up to the user. In my case, I prefer the level of clip I get when the knob is set at 12:00.
@shane0jack The earliest "echo" effects were boxes with a loop of magnetic tape inside which played back anything fed through it on multiple tape heads (in this case, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo). Nowadays, "Echo" is a term that's interchangeable with both "reverb" and "delay", although the latter two are more specific. A company like Boss or Line 6 might call a delay pedal an "echo" to elicit a response of, "Hey, this should sound like a tape echo unit from the 60's" from buyers.
@posiedonpowertrio I'm constantly shifting around my stored memory settings in the DD-20. I have the Reverse mode saved into two of the memory banks and I'm using that more than any other feature, but I use my Space Echo overall about 10 times as much as my DD-20. I like the idea of having two delay pedals to work with, but I'm thinking about downgrading by swapping the DD-20 for a DD-7 (and using it for Reverse delay).
I've heard really good things about the Echo Park over time. (Haha... Get it?!) As much as I would hate to admit it, Line 6's build and sound quality has improved much in the last couple of years.
Great comparison. I wonder if the Space Echo rings out even after the pedal is disengaged like the Giga Delay? I'm in need of that feature, just for the smoothness. Thanks!
Thanks for the demo! I watched your other video on the moog ep-2 expression pedal. The moog IS compatible with the RE-20, and would be the one you would recommend for the money, right? I just want an expression pedal to go with the RE-20 I just picked up strictly for home use, no gigging.
@N3wNaKeD It's out of habit more than anything else. I've had that custom FS-5U switch almost as long as I've had the DD-20. It's annoying holding down the "memory/tap" pedal on the right side to switch between functions. Of course, I could use the little tap button on top of the DD-20 as well, but whatever.
I eventually let my DD-20 go and I got a DD-7 instead because I liked its "analog" and reverse features, plus the DD-7 can be set for different timing intervals with tap tempo (no warp/twist). The Space Echo is definitely my main delay. Choose well, friend!
I say the differentiating factor is the multi tape heads on the Space Echo. In my book, that makes the Space Echo the clear winner. Also, the DD-20 doesn't sound "tapey" enough for me.... at least not from this demo (which I think is a good demonstration). I'll probably just wait for a deal on the Space Echo... I get decent tape from my Echo Park and my Digitech... Thanks!
Sorry i don't understand : u're on the clean channel of ur amp at the beginning ? but is it possible to have a clean sound with this pedal on a clean channel of an amp ? ThanX
Rather than attack my "bloody hopeless" demo, you could have asked politely like this: "Sir Penguinrock, I am considering purchasing the echo unit, but I would like to hear a wider range of settings than what is presented in your video. Could you make an addendum to this with more sounds? I'm sure others would benefit as well." I might have obliged.
My version of "clean" is waaaaay dirtier than anyone else's; I've already received a few years' worth of jokes about it on some of my other videos. To answer your question, yes, the Space Echo will play clean. Just watch that input volume knob (it's always active even if the effect isn't turned on) and adjust accordingly.
Can you qualify that question a little more? What are you trying to accomplish with running vocals into a delay pedal? Is this for live performance or recording purposes? There may be newer vocal processing effects units on the market with delay effects included, where you could still use an XLR cable in and out. (These pedals have 1/4" TS cable jacks, so you would need an XLR-to-TS cable to use them with microphones--not an ideal way to go.) In any case, the Giga Delay would give you more options overall. I should also mention, this video is quite old at this point. Boss has released the DD-500 and DD-200 digital delays, which are excellent. Check them out, or get a used Giga Delay for cheap.
I swapped out my RE-20 on my board for the Moogerfooger MF-104M Analog Delay. (Yes, I made a video for the Minifooger analog delay, but it's not in use...) I gave the Space Echo to a friend before he moved away. It served me well for many years, but once you try a Moog, you don't go back.
If reverse delay is all you care about, you would do well with a Boss DD-7 (or a DD-6 which you can find used for relatively cheap). I actually downgraded from the DD-20 to the DD-7 since making this video.
I have had the giga and I still own the space echo' really the gig a is very versatile but not very good sounding. Side by side with the space echo, it just sounds shrill and lifeless. If you want a tape esq delay go for a echo park beats many delays I have owned hands down, even faux tape and nova delays. Its my go to delay box and compliments the dl4 and space echo really well.
its called dont waste your money on a space echo. The only real space echo are the ones with the real tape inside which are the original crisp sound of vintage delay/reverb - the space echoes' which pink floyd used. if your going to get either or, throw the space echo on a shuttle to space and put your notes through a giga delay.
@reynanr Don't waste a money on an original Roland space echo or this RE-20? The originals are very nice and sound awesome but they are very prone to mechanical failure. Also, there was nothing "crisp" about the originals. For the price, you can't beat the RE-20. It doesn't sound as good as the older Roland space echoes, but it gets you about 90% there, which is close enough for me.
your demo is bloody hopeless?...can someone demo this echo with some USEABLE settings like... vintage, slapback, rock and maybe hanks shadows sound?...some of us might be interested in buying one!!!!!........
I like the sound of the DD20 but I'm attracted to the RE20s warm and confident smile.
This is the best review of the RE-20 on youtube. Nice comparison. I really enjoyed watching (listening)!!
This is a great review thanks Nick.

I like the RE-20 because it has a cylon eye.
Love that you threw in a Cave In riff! Thanks for the comparison video... I've been trying to decide between these 2 pedals for a bit.
Joel Bailey
Thank you. I get more comments on the Cave In riff than anything else. Next time I make a video it will be ALL Cave In references. ;)
haha... Definitely! I'm a HUGE Cave In fan. glad to see they are gigging again now.
@Microphunktv
I'm pretty sure that out of those people who went the extra mile to get a fully analog RE-201 that still works, 99 percent of them would never choose to bring it to a gig. Be reasonable.
thanks a bunch, great playing by the way.

Can the dd20 sounds like the re20 when you move the time/rate knob?
You can use the reverb individually or with the delay repeats, but there isn't a way to turn each on or off independently.
I've heard really good things about the Echo Park over time. (Haha... Get it?!)

Cave In song at 4:12? :) Great demo by the way!
Ok thank you for ur answer (and the vid) Nicholas.

@surgubben
Yes, the RE-20 is the same as the DD-20 in this regard.
Didn't have a recording interface at the time, and it would have been a MONSTER to edit with the video if I did.
I eventually let my DD-20 go and I got a DD-7 instead because I liked its "analog" and reverse features, plus the DD-7 can be set for different timing intervals with tap tempo (no warp/twist). The Space Echo is definitely my main delay. Choose well, friend!
Can you use just the reverb on the space echo and then click a button to put the echo over the top?
thee oh sees does, and they sound awesome.

@reynanr I'm pretty sure Floyd used Binson Echorecs - which aren't tape.
do you have to use the tap tempo with both pedals???
Yes. Yes I do.

@inefficient
It's a VHT/Fryette Pittbull 100/CL.
@rockfreak611 Yes sir, it can. I wasn't aware that Van Halen had used that effect--but the DD-20 certainly is capable of it.
what does the ''peak level'' mean in Space Echo? Please answer.
no presets on the Space Echo?
whats the difference between echo and delay. please reply
which would you recommend for vocals? i’m betting the giga delay?
Can you qualify that question a little more? What are you trying to accomplish with running vocals into a delay pedal? Is this for live performance or recording purposes? You forgot to tap a new tempo after setting the re-20 mode to three tape heads.
What’s the Max delay time (ms) on theSpace Echo?
tapped only, maximum about 6000ms only on mode 3 or 7.
Why oh why have you not used a line recording.
Hi. Do you use the re20 with your moog delay? Thanks
+Nicholas Greenwood Thanks. I'm saving for buying this moog. But as the dollar became so expensive here in Brazil, I'm considering the space echo.
Josmael Roberto Kampa The Space Echo is a great, solid pedal. It will be cheaper and easier to obtain (used or new). Rock on.
What amp are you using?
Innuendo and out the Other !
If reverse delay is all you care about, you would do well with a Boss DD-7 (or a DD-6 which you can find used for relatively cheap). I actually downgraded from the DD-20 to the DD-7 since making this video.
@hivesrock
Solid balsa wood, baby. Only the best.
@joelg125
Unfortunately, no.
Are you using any amp
Fryette Pittbull 100/CL through an Orange PPC412 cabinet. Volume rolled down so I wouldn't have killed my apartment neighbors.
Uh, er, okay... I'll set your guitar rig on fire.
;)
I have had the giga and I still own the space echo' really the gig a is very versatile but not very good sounding. Side by side with the space echo, it just sounds shrill and lifeless. @reynanr
Sure, I mean, I bet we all could spend $600 on a vintage Space Echo unit and lug it around for practices and gigs, you know, whatever.

Plywood SQUIER!
Still isn't analog.... go for re-201
Useless to demo pedals if you dont have good sound - use proper microphones through a mixer or soundcard...this sounds really bad
+Sky Avila *sigh* Of course it does, but this video is 5+ years old. Gimme a break.
haha, okay sir.
