Dark Souls is one of those games where it doesn't tell you nearly everything that's going on in the lore without you having to read descriptions of items and generally pay attention to every bit of dialogue and the environment to piece together the story. As many have mentioned, VaatiVidya is the DS lore expert

I remember hearing a cool “what if” concept that your character goes hollow if you give up on the game. Since the undead don’t really go hollow until they’ve died too many times and fully give up on everything. Also I love the line for dark souls 2 I believe where she says “not all undead are hollow, but all hollows were once undead.”

The story is a bit weird in comparison to DS1 and now to 3. But it gives a different angle in how the world is and was affected. Instead of the old be the kindle to the flame. But it is really really good gameplay wise. And I’m happy they brought back some of those things into Elden Ring.

    • @jgkitarel
      @jgkitarel 2 роки тому +1

DS II is considered the weakest game in the trilogy. It had a very troubled production due to it basically being intended to be Elden Ring in scope, and they ran over in terms of time, so they had to scrap the project and rebuild it from what they had and scale back the graphics because the graphics engines of the time could not handle the load. It had a lot of interesting things to it, and there is very much a "what could have been" vibe in it, but it was very much a case of too ambitious a project that had to be scaled back and made into something playable.
But without it, we wouldn't have gotten what we got with Bloodborne and Dark Souls III, let alone Sekiro. And, of course, Elden Ring.

9:05 What she means here is that by the time you will actually arrive at your destination you will probably have hollowed out enough so that you won't remember the reason why you began your journey in the first place, that is the insidiousness of the curse, not just that you lose you cannot die or that your body decays but that your mind essentially starts to fall apart, worse than alzheimer's because that is just difficulty in remembering where as the curse is literally losing your memories as they disappear.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames I highly recommend them. But I would recommend that you look at playing Elden Ring.
That is every bit as difficult as any Souls game (though a lot more polished) and is basically considered by the community as the perfect game to get people into the genre due to the options from having a much more open world rather than a linear one, though you do eventually have to follow the path to get through the game. I have sunk thirty hours into the game, and I am still less than half way through it because I get distracted by seeing something and wondering what's over there. It very much has a sense of adventure to it.
The thing about the genre is that it is brutally difficult, but fair in its difficulty. Every challenge can be beated, either by stubborn persistence or through simply looking at how you can modify your approach. Or simply learning tricks to make it all easier on you. There is no easy mode for the genre, but your playstyle can make the game easier or harder for you.

I love the story behind dark souls. To super simplify, the world started in the age of ancients, which was full of arch trees and dragons. When fire was created and the first human like creatures we see underground find powerful souls inside the fire which end up becoming the four mentioned Gwyn who became a Godlike figure, Nito the first of the dead, the witch and her daughters of chaos, and the pygmy who is the ancestors to mankind. Using their powers along with one of the dragons betraying his kind out of jealousy, they started the age of fire by killing all the dragons they could and and destroying their arch trees with fire and decay. Well the age of fire was never intended to last forever because its supposed to be followed by the age of dark (like the lady said you can't have one without the other) and Gwyn wasn't ready to let his age of fire die out so he sacrificed himself to keep the flame lit and as a result it locked the world in a loop of always try to keep the fire lit, but it requires more and more power each time. The player characters can choose to let the flames go out or sacrifice themself like Gwyn to keep the age of fire going.

    • @eatdembabies8701
      @eatdembabies8701 2 роки тому +6

It should also be noted before Gwyn sacrified himself the witch tried to create an artificial fire to solve the issue of the first flame going out, and this resulted in chaos and the new fire birthed demons.

    • @bruh5073
      @bruh5073 2 роки тому +2

It's also good to note that the pygmy did not participate in the killing of the dragons. Instead he split his Dark Soul to many fragments which became known as humanity. Every human undead or not has a humanity. Note: A humanity. A single fragment of the larger thing.

To answer the question, most of those are the opening cinematic of each game, but one was a trailer to Dark Souls 2. The subtle brilliance of each cinematic opening is that it's the common knowledge portion of the world and time at that very point leading up to your moment of awakening as a character and playing. The subtle brilliance of Darks Souls 2's is that it teases at the players who just play, ignore dialogue, and go straight for the ends in sight for accomplishing to a point so crucial and far, without really knowing why, but anyone paying attention to those we meet on the way and let their mind wander and even inspect the little things will find out a world more of information that tells not just one story, nor even one side of it for us to take in, but also a bit more of a story of those we meet along these dangerous paths, friend and foe alike. In fact the many characters we find will come in a wide variety of backgrounds and flavors of personality, and yet certain fundamental facts and traits we are suggested to put to the test, and we can find out some unusual truths about these entities. A little bit of it can even come out as misguiding at first until you actually go kill a few holy figures and find out how many people's claimed humanity they hold for who knows why in Dark Souls 1. Then just reading item descriptions around every corner for unique things tells a lot more to the story of figures you meet and make for many grim or inspiring tales, and even curious details that sound like something to look/poke at. For those a little lazier, an alternative option to absorb it exists called VaatiVidya as well as whomever else goes lore diving for secrets and finds their good story-telling voice.

This game gives you lore drip by drip. Most of what we know from the lore has been found in flavor text in items and associating names with random text and such.
The first game is what gives an inkling to what happened. There are videos explaining the lore in detail, but long story short the first dark souls explains it's premise really well. Lords of Flame used their power to kill the immortal dragons. However, the fire that gave them power is dying out. Something that is happening at the same time, is the darksign, a circle brand you see, that brands you as undead. Unable to die, you are taken to the undead asylum where you will be kept prisoner. Undead are also called hollow, as they cannot die, they slowly lose their humanity, memories, hopes and dreams. I'm game, you are Hollow, and you hear of a prophecy that might end the curse of undeath.

Light and Dark have eras in the Dark-Souls lore. After a thousand years of light, the curse of undeath starts to appear to herald the end of the cycle. The undead forget slowly who they are, and go hollow. If nobody can collect the great souls of fire to rekindle the flame before forgetting completely who they are, they will have a thousand years of Darkness. But just like the light can never truly outshine all the dark, the embers of light can never truly be put out.
The lore is extremely difficult to make out, and is only dropped and hinted at in bits and pieces throughout the game, but those attentive who read and listen will be rewarded. I can recommend quite a few analysis vids here on YT that summarise the lore well. And even though it's dark, the light will never truly fade.

This trilogy in particular is very much the sort of series that values lore over narrative. The videos you watched today are the literal intro cinematics to the three Dark Souls games, plus for some reason they threw in a cinematic trailer for DS2 in between the intros for DS1 and 2. Very rarely in the games are you given much in the way of direct storytelling, the story will be told largely through monologues given to you by NPCs or the descriptions written on various items you come across in the game. Most of the time, you don't really know WHERE you're going or WHY (hence the dig in the DS2 intro about "standing before its decrepit gate...without really knowing why"), you just know some bits of info about the world you're in and are set loose to "just go DO something." You'll get small clues here and there as to how you're intended to progress, but the bulk of it is just "Ok I'm here...the enemies in THAT direction seem a lot easier to handle, so I guess I'll go that way."
The extreme lack of handholding, coupled with a combat system that generally emphasizes taking your time and making deliberate choices based on reading your enemies and watching your positioning, has led to these games being NOTORIOUS for being some of the hardest games around...but really it's just learning your opponents' patterns and getting into a rhythm. Death has almost no lasting consequence (aside from a few highly specific circumstances), so really it's all about just getting out there and making progress wherever you find it.
In terms of general quality...Dark Souls 1 is what most would consider to be the best game in the series. Level design was at its peak in terms of connectivity and the way areas flowed into one another, and it formed the basis of the mythology that would carry throughout the 3 games. Dark Souls 2, while something new at the time it came out when we were craving more Dark Souls...is largely skippable, and suffers from a LOT of design flaws that are most likely due to it being the ONLY game of all "Soulsborne" titles that WASN'T built under the guidance of Miyazaki, the director of the series. Dark souls 3 is my personal favorite of the trilogy (though my heart will ALWAYS adore the first game) because it's a lot of what was great about DS1, without a lot of the mess of DS2, and given the benefit of added years of experience and refinement from the team. I wouldn't say the story is on the same level as DS1, but the gameplay itself feels more fluid and satsifying IMO.
And now that I've sunk a few hours into Elden Ring, I can see why people are raving about it so much. It's basically Dark Souls 4, just with a whole new mythology and a smattering of new design elements and features that put more power in the players' hands than ever before (with a bit of a difficulty curve to compensate). I think Horizon: Forbidden West is probably the premiere sequel of the year (so far) in my personal opinion, but Elden Ring is gonna keep me entertained for months to come, I bet.

The Soulsborne/Sekiro/Elden Ring games are some of those games that packs so much details in each of assets, be it the environment, the armours, weapons, bosses, enemies and so on, that it's easy to be lost in those details. Dark Souls is unique in fantasy story telling. Whereas most fantasy settings, even darker ones, have themes of progress and triumph and adventure, and hope. Dark Souls embodies themes of stagnation, and a profound sadness. Everything in each Souls game is long past its glory days, just clinging on before being forgotten by the world. Ancient rusted knights patrol crumbling forgotten castles, their minds so far gone that they don't know why they're still there. Each boss you slay is the last of its kind, and their soundtracks reflect how while they can be intense battles, its also a mournful experience that its finally by your hand that they are snuffed out.

And do keep tissues ready its called prepare to cry for a reason.

I am still a newbie to Soul games and watching these trailers to opening make me wanting to go back to my PS3 to play the games I have never completed in ages. If you want to know why everything is pretty vague and confusing then from what I understand Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the Soulsborne series, read a lot of western fantasy books when he was a child but due to speaking and reading in mostly Japanese he didn’t understand a lot of the plot points and words in the books he read which forced him to take what he could understand and fill in the blanks through his own imagination. This is how the games are built to be presented to the player. It’s a world which is at the end of it’s life and you are the one walking through it trying to figure out for yourself how it got there. Whether through environmental details, item descriptions or character dialogue you get bits and pieces of.
There is a deep, tragic and amazing story in these games that is very much worth looking into but it took the fans of the games to tell it in full detail or at least what we believe is the most accurate and likely to have happened. If you watch nothing else I recommend watching Vaatividya’s video on Artorias of the Abyss. He is a boss from Dark Souls 1 and you can go through the whole game never knowing his story but once you do know his story and why he’s a boss then he becomes difficult to fight for a whole different reason 😭
I love your guy’s reactions and thank you so much for watching these videos. I hope you end up watching at least one Vaati video cause he is a great story teller. Hope you have a great day!

Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring are some of the few very dark fantasy games out there. With lots of messed up or disturbing things in the lore or events. They have a very unique setting, I think. Where the world hasn't quite ended, but it's wasting away. A world slowly dying. Death and decay is everywhere,. The inhabitants are harsh; very few having NOT succumbed to insanity at the state of the world. Everyone is downtrodden and what little hope remains are as fading embers.
In these worlds you're a normal person--or less than a person: a hollow, an undead. Compared to the horrors that you meet, you're nothing. The world will slice you, smash you, crush you, impale you. But all the games emphasize determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. Get up. Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. Triumph. Live.

I will second looking at the lore videos, especially Vaati Vidya's stuff as they are easy to digest. But one other thing I would recommend is to listen to the music, which also tells a story in and of itself. The item descriptions, the scenery, and the boss music all combine to tell you a story. And Dark Souls III's music is all melancholy even on the few cases where it gets bombastic or chaotic.

    Spoiler alert!
Thanks for that, rewatching ds1 i picked up on a few things with the archtrees. When it explains the concept of fire. The cam dives into a tree all the way to the bottom. And then into a cave were the first flame rests.
Now thats a key plot point and it shows it from the frist game. Only to tell in the third game whist the connection with bloodborne, elden ring.
That in ds3 you see hollow undead become trees quite literally through a curse(dark). So those archtrees are people. I saw another video about the macrocosm(man, hollow) and the microcosm(god, archtree).
The relationship between god and man.
This concept is throughout the entire franchise including bb, elden ring. Theres even a boss called orphan of kos. Which plays on those words.
So hopefully in elden ring 2 or a new game there going to make. Could end it if a happy ending with the world becoming modern or destoryed break the cycle. maybe somehow connect the games which would be fantastic.
But i do like the ending of berserk which ended cherry even though the creator passed away last year. Which sort left in a major cliffhanger.

Dark souls is a very interesting game and have a very interesting story. it kinda hinted on some of it with the first trailer. but the story is a lot about rebirth and continuing the cycle.
throughout the game you get the chance to kindle the fire, which will bring back the age of light. but the prophecy also says that one day the light will fade, and only dark will remain. that is also why you can actually start the age of darkness as a ending. although the age of dark may sound bad, it is actually the age of Man in a way. the pygmy they talked about in the first is actually the very first human. and throughout the story you learn that humanity (which you use to reverse the effects of being undead.) is actually a piece of the fire that the pygmy got. which was known as the dark soul. but what is most interesting is the fact that every time the cycle is restarted. the 3 great souls will return in different forms. the 3 great souls being gwyn, nito and the witch.

Dark Souls "Prepare to cry" does a good job with the lore, he even expands on individual character lore. Now keep in mind some of it is theories because like human history you take a biography with a grain of salt. As if anyone believes Ben Franklin actually swam faster than current day Olympic athletes today (if you read his swimming feats from his biography). You come closer to the truth when you read contradictions from souls, items, or when specific characters say something when they talk to you (or when you kill them, your choice, or if you have a specific item equipped, or if you do specific events or their story line differently). Meaning the story can only be mostly pieced together from multiple playthroughs AND all the games are connected. And much like human history most of the story will be lost or impossible to piece. This is the most humanist story, where it's not you but the humans who learn from you that achieve their goals. Literally passing on the fire of humanity to the next generation. Granted the director is heavily inspired by Berserk so it's going to be dark. However, Berserk is a humanist story as well...no matter how much trauma you been through or loved ones you lost, you have to keep moving on and keep them in your memories otherwise they will truly die if they are forgotten. It's not about overpowered, it's keep trying against all odds for the hope of taking one step forward for all humanity against all the gods, curses, dragons, deceit (plenty of lying characters that manipulate), and darkness but like all unknowns such as darkness; knowledge illuminates and darkness isn't as scary as the lords or gods claim (hence why one of the darkest items that looks like a literal dark soul is called 'humanity').
But what made it one of my favorite games, there's no instructs, no map, just do w/e. Multiple endings, and you can kill good and friendly people for no reason and watch their last moments crying out for their loved ones. The fact the game gives you the option to just run in down and do some of the dumbest things, like kill people that WANT to help you, and just outright jump into some of the hardest areas is what makes it great. But at the same time the villain act of killing is actually a mercy to some, some characters are doomed to become their worst fears so it's sometimes better to be their murderer after multiple playthroughs.

All the Souls games are really good, but the first one is a masterpiece in my opinion, it has a whole creation myth that it tells you about very briefly in the cinematic when you start the game but after that it tells you almost nothing else explicitly about the story you have to discover and put together the whole mythology and history from bits and pieces, deducing what's going on from the types of places and enemies you encounter and their locations, and also from the items you discover. The game doesn't take your hand and leads you through the story, in fact the game isn't exactly linear and it doesn't even explain to you most of the game mechanics, you learn them by trying stuff and learning from your mistakes. It doesn hand you almost any information explicitly (you can beat the game and not have any idea what's going on, it happens to a lot of people), but if you are invested and you care about finding out the truth about the story you can put it together by exploring carefully and and thinking about the bits of information you get along the way. You can also follow the story arcs of different npcs if you pay attention. It's pretty amazing how the world is built and how interconnected the areas are (the level design is just incredible and some of the areas are heavily inspired by real life places), and how almost everything has meaning. And it is a game where you actually have to learn how to fight and you can't get complacent because you will die a lot if you don't pay attention.

Something to keep in mind of about the SoulsBorne games lore if you guys wanna delve more into it. These games are depressing as hell, the characters in these games are either evil, tragically evil or good but driven mad , there are no happy endings (at least as far as I've known). An example of this is Solaire of Astora (famously known in the community as Sunbro or the "Praise the Sun guy"), one of the most beloved and tragic characters of any SoulsBorne games, a lovable knight filled with positivity and love for the beautiful Sun on the quest of searching for his Sunlight (literally). @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames I personally think SoulsBorne lore are more depressing then 40k because they like to play tricks on you.
Imagine this: You start to get invested in someone, the game suddenly killed them off, you look throughout the game for clues, you found out that the culprit was another character that you like, you seek out that character and got forced into a battle scenario with them, you killed them, you piece together they're last words and equipment's description, you found out they're tragic backstory that the other guy you like was actually a bad guy with an evil plot.
FromSoftware love doing this. 40k is something like "it's horrific, it's dark, it's edgy but it's expected, predictable and very obvious", whereas SoulsBorne level of depressing is more of "it's expected but unpredictable because they're either hidden or very subtle, it'll hit you when you least expected and when it does it is going to stick with you for a long time". I recently found out that my Fire Keeper NPC in DS 1 whose tongue was revealed to be forcefully removed and in charged of upgrading my potion, was killed by one of the NPCs that I've rescued, and I have to live with the fact that my kindness had led to the death of an innocent woman NPC who just wanted to help me.

So the main focus of Dark Souls (1 and 3, 2 completely went out left field) is that basically there's this fire which all souls came from know as the First Flame. The gods in the universe are essentially giant humans with incredibly large and powerful souls. However, the First Flame is slowly dying and when it goes so to goes the Age of Fire/Gods. The gods-Lords-have grown insane and reality is slowly tearing apart as even time and space is warped. Your goal, as the player, is to aquire the power of the gods by taking their Lord Souls so that you can rekindle the First Flame and give the Age of Fire a restart.
In Dark Souls 1, you're a Hollow trying to become the second Lord of Cinder-one who has sacrificed themselves to rekindle the First Flame-to replace the First Lord of Cinder, Gwyn-Lord of Sunlight who was throwing Thunder Bolts at Dragons-who started this cycle of Rekindling.
Dark Souls 3 takes place in the distant future of Dark Souls 1. In it you're an Ashen One. A Failed Lord of Cinder who couldn't quite rekindle the First Flame and left things to continue becoming worse. In order to make up for and fix this, the people brought back to life prior Lords of Cinder to rekindle the First Flame. They refused because using your very being to the fuel source of the fires of existence sucks. So the world continues to get worse until the Ashen One is brought back to reclaim the Lord Souls of the former Lords of Cinder and retry Kindling the First Flame.

The overarching story of all 3 souls game is pretty simple if you take it a face value. There was a world before fire which everything last forever, dragon, giant tree etc, but then the first flame brought death and duality. And age of fire begins, but something unnatural happens afterwards, where human start getting cursed and become unable to die, and the undead are being lead to throw themselves into the first flame to extend the age of fire. Once extended, things got back to "normal" albeit with many new policies regarding the treatment of the first flame and undeads, new kingdoms rise and fall and whenever the first flame starts to fade, the undead are used to extend it again. The rest of the little details and relevation you come across by exploring, piercing together item descriptions and environmental story telling.

Dark Souls 2 was my favorite - controversial opinion, I know, but the atmosphere, the locales, the wide variety of bosses, the NPC questlines, and the DLC just did it for me in a way that the other two games never managed. (Although the Frozen Outskirts can go die in a ditch). DS2 has a special place for me. I try to look at it as a break from the norm in Soulsborne series.

Cringe opinion. Yet an opinion nonetheless, so I can't say you're wrong lol.

DS1s lore is unbeatable..DS2 just has way too many issues.

DS2 was my favorite when it comes to PvP and build variety. DS1 for lore, DS3 for locales

You guys should check out Dark Souls 3's Launch Trailer. Hozier's song "In The Woods Somewhere" perfectly fits with the theme of the game.

Awesome Dark souls! This game series is so damn good. One of those games that I could always recommend at least trying. It is story feels truly epic, and it's gameplay is tough but satisfying once you learn its tricks. A must for fans of dark fantasy.

That’s what threw us off. But guess it helped tell the story better. Even if we still ended up being lost 😂

If you guys aren't planning to play them. Can I suggest you do reactions on Darksouls 1, 2, 3, Bloodborne, Demon souls and finally Elden Ring Bosses!!! This would be great for you guys to react to.

We may play Elden Ring but not sure about the other games. Maybe we stray with Dark Souls 2 as we are leaning towards skipping that one 🤔
