that's nothing. PlagueOfGripes literally established when Undead Burg in DS1 was plagued by the undead curse by looking at bricks. Also about 40 one hour or more videos about ds1
Havel: One of the buffest dudes in Dark Souls who slayed dragons, was locked in a basement with all his weapons and armor and could not break down a wooden door.
Gwyn: 'If you have a baby with it you'd better hide it somewhere real good though. Get Velka to help you out she's hidden all sorts of weird s**t for me, she knows this painter who takes care of business. Nobody has to know about all those filthy, filthy wheel skeletons or that monk that wears a bathrobe on his head'
Actually - Judging from the Sunlight Blade description (Saying that he left this miracle as a final farewell on his fathers coffin) we can safely assume it wasn't Gwyn who stripped Nameless King of his deific status, as he was most likely a hollow at that point.
@@blvalverde nah its cus gwyn liked his son, he built statues of him too, most evidence points to the people that destroyed his statues everywhere was the way of white or something, long after gwyns rule faded
One of my favorite cutscenes is when we fell The King of the Storm. The slight shake of hesitation before The Nameless King kills his mount and long time friend was heartbreaking.
You know, it just sprang to mind that Oceiros's queen might have just taken Ocelot and left the blind dragon king with an illusion of their child. One focused on touch, smell and sound rather than sight.
I kind of agree with this theory. I think his wife left with the child because Oceiros had gone insane. He was an abusive father and husband and she ran away with the kid.
@@executioner_ecgbert884 Certainly possible, but considering the amount of time involved... It makes me suspect a long game. A deific bride trying to make something akin to crossbreed Priscilla?
I suspect Yorshka is Ocelotte. After all, how many dragon crossbreeds are there knocking around? Where did Gwyndolin even find a spare crossbreed? And he's already got precedence for excellent illusions and boys raised as daughters.
Isn’t it amazing that people can come up with such an in depth, artistic concept like Dark Souls? Never played the game but I love watching these videos explaining the lore and story, it’s amazing.
EphGee Bit of a late reply so you’ve most likely completed it by now, but just in case you haven’t progressed since your last comment; from majula, most people generally proceed to the forest of fallen giants first as the enemies/bosses there are easiest. There is also some decent early game loot there, namely the Drangleic armor set and the fire longsword - a solid loadout for the first third or so of the game 👍
It makes me think about how much trust there must be between The Nameless king and The king of Storms. The king will constantly use attacks that are imbued with lightning, often striking near the dragons head, and yet they fight together beautifully
I watched a video of a modder who pitted these two against each other Havel Vs NK, no HP or damage buffs to either, and Havel was incredibly close to killing NK, the reason Havel failed was he took time to Rock Up and that lower mobility was his ultimate downfall.
The reason Ocelot is "invisible" is actually kinda dark. In an early version of the game, the character model was actually there, but From decided that a deranged half dragon smashing a baby into the ground was a bit to brutal, so they removed the model and all the sound files related to said smashing. Don't think you can find the video, but the sound files are floating around.
I don't think that's too brutal for Fromsoft. It's more likely that they removed it because having children harmed onscreen would get your game banned in lots of countries.
adding to the theory of ornstein discarding his armor to begin the transformation to a dragon: what if he did not only go through with it, but also became the most powerful of them and transformed into the giant bird thing the nameless king is riding on? the swirly horns of the big bird and dragon head stone users look quite similar. that would also fit ornstein being the firstborn's faithful knight as he still stands by his side. plus he gets smashed and absorbed by his 'duo partner' once again.
Not only that I always thought that In Dark Souls 1 he was just an Illusion like everything else since he had already departed to find the Nameless King
I have always thought that to be the case. The hint of the Storm Curved Sword was what convinced me that was it. His power absorbed by his master and mentor for that final fight just as the Old Gods of Anor Londo always did. There's three clues pointing to it, and none disputing it. I'll take it as my canon. It would also explain his powers of lightning shining through even his Dragon Form, which as far as I know is not only unique, but downright contradictory to all other dragon nature. It fits with his lightning imbued dragonslayer background well.
That would be interesting but the Dragon has been with the NK from the start of his betrayal. The Dragon has been with him since the start. I don't think the times match up but damn that's a dope thought
You can see in many videos concepts of ocelott, including horrible sounds of him being crushed, the blood when he is smashed was replaced with water, and everything that show violence was cut off because the creators realize that the game was going to be cut-off in many countries because its was a little "too much". And maybe i`m one of the only ones that think this scene is one of the most important in the game. Oceiros fight was suppose to be one of the most "Oh shit..." moments in the game, its was suppose to shock the player, and make him realize all the violence and madness that stroke lothric (kingdom). Most of the moments in the game show a lot of corruption of the world, showing man-centipedes and gooed holy knights that make you either feel sad or grossed, but you really never see the gravity of the situation. Oceiros fight was to really show that the "shit hit the fan", showing how the great kingdom of lothric has fallen into disgrace after so many attempts of make a heir to link the fire. Many people think it would just be some "gore porn" showing a baby being killed, i also think its horrible but it would be such a powerful moment in the game, one that would strike the player when deciding if he should link the fire, just like seeing the body of countless fire-keepers in a pit. Just like Dark Souls 1 that you find the truth of the dark age avoiding your regular path and finding Dark Stalker Kathe, i think Oceiros might be a optional boss for the same reason, being a hidden horrible truth of the cursed path of linking the fire. It would be such a emotional fight seeing a twisted father trying to protect his baby and then shocking when he kills his own soon in a strike of madness. After the censor, all the focus on the "invisible" baby, and a weird cry of one of the background and Oceiros looking like hes holding something in the entire fight (even in the second form) just make the player confused if he should be seeing something, or if the baby is invisible or if is any baby at all. Most players just went "wow thats was wierd... OH HEY! A MYSTERIOUS DOOR!". For me Oceiros fight should be one of the most memorable in the Dark Souls franchise and make me really sad seeing ending like that. Oh yeah, my english may be kind bad in some parts but thank you if you read it all.
The first time I went through the boss fight I just blew off the whole Ocelotte thing as just part of Oceiros's madness, talking to and cradling a "child" that wasn't actually there. I think this is how most people would see it too, without the original grisly content. Censorship is a bitch.
Finally someone who point the censorship! You can't know how this "invisible baby" "still alive baby" non sense are driving me so Mad! especially when you do a little research, it's not hard to find, and on a first playthrough the thought should be like the XZ Gaming i guess (that was mine too) But thanks THANKS FOR THIS COMMENT Estevao!
Estevao When you say violence, do you mean shown in game? Because there are cut voicelines and stuff, but there's never any actual showing of him beating a child or even blood at any point. It was all done through voicelines. The babies invisible too and that was always planned. The voicelines cut suggest he either ate or beat the baby into a pulp. Either way, even without the visual component, it is some fucked shit. Easily some of the most disturbing things I've heard.
I didnt want to see old demon king die after seeing his struggle to survive..but then again mabe we put him out of his misery. Breaks my heart...good game design indeed
@@Kazuhiro-i "Death as mercy" is arguably the point of Dark Souls, given the whole fact that the Linking of the Flame is basically what causes the suffering of decay for the world of the games.
Gwynevere is the goddess of fertility - so she had lots and lots of babies. Half-breeds abound! Vaati didn't even touch on "Gertrude, the Heavenly Daughter" who was a feathered(?) child of Gwynevere. Her corpse(?) was trapped in that cage above the grand archives with all the feathers plucked out (Source: Divine Pillars of Light - Grand Archives). I wish he'd do a video on that lore; I'm quite curious about it.
The Seath thing was maybe against her own will and for "political" reasons (as reward for aiding Gwyn against the other dragons) and Oceiros was a normal human before he turned into his "dragon" form, so I doubt it tbh
These lore videos have added an additional level of appreciation, depth and love for this game for me that I didn't have before. I appreciate the effort you've put forth to make them. I look forward to watching the rest. Thank you!
I mean. I already shared another majorly-uneducated theory on another one of your videos, but a thought came to mind, on watching this one also. Again, don't expect it to be accurate cause I don't know that much about Dark Souls. But Ornstein is supposedly alive in this 'universe' also, despite being killed in a previous one. This is the same for Havel. So, is it possible that Seath also remained alive in this universe? And you see the man in the armor, in the Way of the Dragon pose. What I wonder, is perhaps he had done the research to possess, Seath? Is that as all a possibility? Well, if it is or not, I just put the idea out there. Again, There may be things out there to discredit it, so if there is, sorry for goin on about this here, but in case there isn't.... Well. Here's an idea.
What if the man in the suit, had been Ocerios? Of course, how he got Seath up in there is beyond me. What if the scales are also a form of molting? The people could also easily be experiments, for this same thing.
The Old Demon King is an underrated boss, I love the arena, his lore and that his last 10% health he loses his strength and can barely fight. A small detail almost everyone would miss because you're probably gonna kill him immediately as it happens
Recently played DS3 for the first time Got to see a lot of the final 10%, almost got killed by it. My build was a joke with how weak it was (and remained that way because DS3 is no fun.)
Oceiros: You were born a child of Dragons, what could you possibly fear? Me, standing right next to him with a giant Zweihänder drenched in Dragonblood: Am I a joke to you?
Gwynivere: Daddy, can I date Seath? Gwyn: the duke, who is also that pale, scaleless dragon that gave us lightning to betray his own kin? Sure thing, just be careful, he's a bit crazy. NK: Hey dad, can I have a pet dragon? Gwyn: NO!! NK: I'm getting a pet dragon. Gwyn: I'll take down your statues. NK: you're bluffing, Gwyn: You said the same thing when I said I'd set myself on fire to keep that flame thing lit. NK: And? Gwyn: Smough, knock down every statue with my firstborn's face on it. Smough: ? Gwyn: yes, even the ones at the sunlight altars. I know you like the sun warriors, but my son has disgraced his own name. Smough: :( NK: FINE! I'm going East!
>be last of your race >be surrounded by said race's corpes >this guy comes and fights you >gets you to a half-death state >doesn't kill you and instead narrates your sad history probably crying inside already, a devil may cry fam
A little detail that I just love so much is that in the cutscene were the nameless King absorbs the storm drake, if you watch closely, you can see that he flinches a bit, that he's shaking. The drake was his battlefield companion for a long time. He really bonded with him and it was hard for him to absorb his close companion.
I noticed the Demon King's last hurrah the first time I fought him....I felt awful, realizing he was the last Demon of his kind....the, literal, last demon within this story arch. So sad...
Agreed. It's like when we went to kill Sif. Sif was just guarding his master's grave. And we went there only for a ring. The first time I fought Sif and I see him limping, I almost broke out of the battle... Poor guy didn't have to be killed. All we have to do is just grab the ring and run away!! WHY SIF, FROMSOFT?!
That "last hurrah" killed me the first time he used it against me. I thought I had staggered him and attacked, not realisibg that he would obliterate my entire healthbar with one attack.
Mika Streich Yeh, it hits me almost eery time....but I've gotten to my third journey, and used a few other new characters and have remembered that attack. It's a devastating blow if you've spent so much time trying to kill him, and he kills you off with that eruption of fire. Thankfully, he is done attacking indefinitely after that, and only attempts to swipe his arm at you, but can't because he's too weak. He got me 2-3 times before I knew what I was doing. On the 3rd attempt ever, I remembered that sneaky move....but it's sad in the end, because (again) he's the last of it's kind :(
Sif is the worst, especially since he didn't go mad like so many other powerful beings we kill in the DS games. And bc sif remembers you if you saved him before you go there to get the abyss ring. It's a tragedy.
Idk about my favorite, I really love the Slumbering Dragon fight from DS2. But it's definitely my favorite in 3. I tend to enjoy the dragons most. But my boys Fume Knight and Prince Lothric are dope too
I've played through Dark Souls 3 about 5 times, and i never knew any of this about the Nameless King. It's extremely interesting! Thank you for the videos.
@@s.i.rjewel828 yea with my first playthrough I completely missed it since I wanted to learn more what was going on and forgot about the random dragon dude sitting outside the dungeons
actually i knew all of this in my first playthrough. everything that was said here is from in game lore, from Item descriptions. when you try to transpose a soul, read the soul's own description, and then read the description of each item you can transpose, and you'll basically know all the lore. what i like about Dark souls, is that not only the knowledge is locked away in item descriptions, which you might not even find in your playthrough, but also once your found the item and read its lore, you never need another break down or explanation about them !
When I fought Oceiros, I thought for sure that the crying baby sound was coming from Oceiros himself. That indicated to me that he probably lost his son and went so mad with grief that he convinced himself that Oceilot was still alive and developed some form of multiple personality disorder. The reason he smashes the "baby" in phase two might be that somehow he remembered that Oceilot is dead, and that's why his phase two is so much more aggressive. Equal parts rage and having nothing left to protect.
Is Ornstein the Nameless King's dragon? His faithful mount after swearing allegiance to Gwyn's firstborn and following the path of the dragon? You get his armor and weapon only after the fight, just like you get a boss' armor set only after killing them.
i think that ornstein was just an illusion of gwyndolin much like gwynevere was and left before the chosen undead found him in DS1, also it is heavily implied that Havel was not the one locked away and it was just a follower. This would make all of this into one timeline instead of different ones and would add that much more depth of the story of dark souls
We get Ornstein's personal soul and ring wich I doubt a normal Illusion could give.also you can kill gwyndolin before fighting ornstein and smough.even gwynevere will disapear and only an item(lord vessel) will be left to be looted yet ornstein and smough remain indicating even more they are real wich makes it even sadder.they play with their lives only to guard an illusion
@@thelichking9070 the lion ring can still be found in ds3, meaning it was left there, so it's possible that ornestein left that to Gwyndolin. Also, it's a bit strange how Ornstein grows in size so much, like it's malleable. I think when we kill ornstein smough just lights his hammer with lightning (he was a follower of gwyn, it's entirely possible that he had something similar since even silver knights do), while if we kill smough first, the illusion just gets bigger. Also, it's entirely possible that gwyndolin too is an illusion, at least his death, since we find him getting devoured by aldritch later. Lastly, even if you kill gwyndolin gwynevere illusion remains until she's killed. Everyone gets to believe their own theory, but i think this one makes sense!
Dark Souls 1 most proliferated theme is how you are not a real chosen one of fate, but one of chance, the undead that arrives when the world was weakened enough for you to beat the challenges, that's why Anor Londo is a land of illusions and deceptions, just a front to reinforce that belief of you being special, when in reality Gwyndolin only wants you to get burned on the first flame. But the odd one here is Ornstein, he was not weakened, and his status was one of the highest order, with him being the leader of Gwyn's four, it just doesn't makes sense that you are able to kill him, much less with his back up, but when you face another warrior of Gwyn, Artorias, who is weakened, you can barely keep up with him, and even people comment how what you did was just putting him out of his misery. Is only logical to think about Ornstein as an illusion.
Great Video. I’m rediscovering this game years later. Just found that Stray Demon at Farron Keep has a final stand as well. His legs burst off and he crawls with one arm and flails his club. Hit me in the feels.
I have horrid memories of Havel's basement. First time playing souls. Picked wanderer with master key burial gift. Everything went fine and dandy for the first little bit, overleveled myself WAY to much from farming, found the early blacksmith dude in the New Londo ruins, and I even discovered the Uchigatana semi-accidentally. I then got to the Taurus Demon's spiral staircase and, out of curiosity, unlocked the door to Havel's basement with my master key. I saw Havel standing at the bottom of the basement, and thought "Huh, I have 17 Dex with a +3 Uchigatana, I can take him." I attack the rockman, trying to stunlock him, but the poise was too much. He rears up his semi-penis shaped dragon tooth for a slam attack and, me being a first time noob, I raise my dinky nipple shield in hopes of blocking. My healthbar instantly transforms from a deep red hue, to a yellow colour similar to the liquid slowly filling my pants.
19:06 The story breaking part of the fight is that FromSoft couldn't add the baby to the battle as it is highly looked down upon to cause any form of injury to an infant (it is in fact illegal in some countries) in a game, so they removed it from view, so I always thought his dialogue here was kinda funny "you were born a child of dragons, what could you possibly fear?"
You never talked about the Stray Demon's relation to Havel. Its soul can be transposed into Havel's Ring, and his armor can be found nearby. Both the ring and the armor also make reference to the fact that many individuals follow in Havel's footsteps. It implies that the person we meet in game is in fact not Havel, but someone who killed the Stray Demon to construct a ring and armor in Havel's likeness. We also see 'Havel' standing in front of a dead wyvern, so it's possible he had just finished harvesting a Dragon's Tooth from it.
Also, you should explore more into the details of Lucatiel's relation to the Curse-Rotted Greatwood. Hodrick has her shield, her armor is in a nearby tower, and her mask can be bought for a Vertebra Shackle which implies she has some relation to the Mound Makers. Also, Sirris has a habit of killing people from Mirrah, and only shows up when you're out of Undead Settlement...
Sirris doesn't have a habit of killing people from Mirrah. Just because you help her defeat this one random NPC from Mirrah that's a known serial killer you shouldn't make assumptions based around that for her whole character
Two NPCs. Hodrick is her grandfather, meaning they're both from the Sunless Realms. Hodrick's Shield text says it's from the Sunless Realms as well, but we recognize it as Lucatiel's shield, meaning the Sunless Realms is Mirrah. Also, Sirris is either lying about being a Darkmoon, or believed to be dead by her superiors. When you join the Darkmoons, Yorshka specifically mentions that there aren't any Darkmoon Knights left.
Ornstein went off to serve the Nameless King. In order to reach him, he needed to go on the Path of the Dragon. He completed his journey and became a dragon himself. A very special kind of dragon. With no need for armor or weapons he left them off to the side and became the storm drake that the Nameless King rides. When you kill Ornstein in Dark Souls 1, Smough consumes his soul and becomes strengthened with lighting. When you defeat the storm drake in Dark souls 3, the same exact thing happens. Ornstein the Storm Drake, unlike any dragon before him.
I find it more likely that the Drake is something else, and that Ornstein became one of the many transformed dragons. If only because the power of storm seems quite specifically different from the power of lightning. The Nameless King already has quite a lot of lightning, but the King Of Storms doesn't have any lightning attacks. And when NK finally absorbs the KOS' soul he doesn't get any more lightning. Rather, he gains flight and extreme speed. These sound like completely different things (Ornstein's speedhacking charge attack during his first boss fight not withstanding)
Maxwell Lindley well, the charge is a technique, not from the stormdrake. we know this because NK apparently trained ornstein, including the charge and the pierce-and-shock attack.
i may be wrong but i think when ornstein went searching for the nameless king he was dissapointed... maybe he died or something else, and then he starts cosplaying as the nameless king and the NK we kill is actually Ornstein
Maxenfelter King of the storm does have that charged lightning slam, and the lightning bolt he throws while he's flying around. Unless by King of storms you meant the wyvern itself, in which case I agree with you.
Weird, I always assumed because of his cry, that you've managed to hit Ocelotte and kill them. So I assumed Oceiros' cry is one of pain or grief, and that's why he becomes so animalistic in the next part of the fight, because he is so maddened and enraged with his grief.
Yeah that's true but imagine how much deeper you could get with the lore in a series of books. The placement of items and hints is there to make people figure out the lore but they could find a way to do that in a book.
You should look into Michael Moorcock. His Elric and Corum series are pretty similar thematically to Dark Souls. Tragic fantasy about doom shrouded lands and heroes.
+VaatiVidya I thought you lore guys read descriptions... not just you but also Dave Klein apparently has never read Ornstein's soul from dark souls 1, or at least not careful enough. "Soul of Ornstein, Dragonslayer Knight who guards the cathedral in the forsaken city of Anor Londo. Special beings have special souls. Lord Gwyn granted this soul to his four most trusted knights." As you can read right here Ornstein's soul was granted this soul by Gwyn. So it might not be actually his personal soul, but more of a manifestation of power (Ornstein's power) granted by Gwyn. Just like Gwyn gave parts of his soul to Seath, the 4 Kings and the other 3 knights (and to other gods as well). I think Ornstein left this soul to guard the cathedral in his stead when he himself left or Gwyndolin created a powerful illusion of this soul to the point it became physical. There is no need to use that cycle excuse for Ornstein here.
5:05 notice how the Nameless King's spear hand shakes before he claims the King of the Storm's soul, only noticed this recently and made me feel quite sad. I used to think no bosses (aside from Sif, Gael and *maaayybe Friede*) had no emotions other than the insatiable drive to end the player in a violent fashion.
I think I read somewhere that Oceiros is indeed the father of Lothric and Lorian. After listening to this, I feel like, to a degree, that Oceiros was displeased with his two sons, Lorian who was fully human, Lothric who may or may not be a dragon-kin (if you closely, he has long clawed hands, so this is a theory that I'm actually quite fond of) and if he is, the genetic bastardization is probably what resulted in him being so sick and frail and Ocelotte was the ideal hybrid, but Oceiros had already gone mad and the queen had left. I think personally that the queen took Ocelotte with her when she fled and Oceiros was hallucinating the whole thing and the crying we hear is some kind of demonic-magical reflection of his insanity.
Something else that connects Seath with Oceiros: the moonlight Greatsword. You get it from Seath by cutting his tail, and when you beat Oceiros, you can transpose his soul to get it.
I find it interesting that the wearers of the Faraam set are called the lion knights and ornstein’s helmet appears to bear the visage of a lion. Perhaps this is further confirmation that Faraam is related to the nameless king. As well as ornstein being his faithful first knight implies he was perhaps the leader of these lion knights or perhaps just high ranking within them. Feel free to correct me on any of this I got wrong.
Was thinking the exact same thing! The only odd bit is that the Lion Knights were known for their two-handed swordsmanship, rather than spears/swordspears. But then maybe that's just because a swordspear would be too topheavy for regular humans to use so they went for the next best thing?
@@marcushenehan1049 well sword-spears are supposed to be good against dragons so maybe when they went extinct they switched to two-handed swords to adapt. They are also called the lion knights of Forossa and the description of the bandit set in dark souls 2 says that forossa was plagued by bandits and lawlessness so perhaps they needed to alter their fighting style to better combat human opponents?
entirely possible. Though I kinda feel like NK, if he had been so enamoured with dragons as to betray his father to side with them, would have modelled his Knights after dragons rather than lions. Perhaps Ornstein gathered enough followers in his search for NK that he himself became worshipped and was the foundation of Forossa and its Lion Knights. We've seen it happen with Pharis after all
One detail I loved during the nameless king fight, is that once you beat the first half, the nameless king's sword quivers a little before aborbing the soul of the drake.
I'd like to voice a personal theory here, about how the three games relate to each other in terms of continuity. It came to me fairly early in the game, in the Undead Settlement, and I'm not entirely certain if later events in the game really support it, but I'd still like to just put it out there. I suspect that Dark Souls II and III represent different, branching paths from the outcome of the original game. Dark Souls III has a lot more in common with the original than it does with the sequel, in terms of the plot structure, the recurring themes, and overall feel of the narrative. I posit that this is because Dark Souls III takes place in a universe where the Chosen Undead protagonist in the original linked the First Flame, whereas Dark Souls II takes place in a world where the Chosen Undead didn't. In Dark Souls III, linking the fire is a practiced and hallowed tradition. Lords and kingdoms have been doing it for ages, all in homage to the first linking of the fire. In Dark Souls II, only three people ever mention linking the flame; Nashandra at the very end, the Emerald Herald (also towards the very end), and the Shaloquir the Cat, who describes the Lost Sinner's actions with horror. Dark Souls II also fails to mention most of the kingdoms and lands that are present in the original game, and for the longest time Dark Souls III hardly seemed to mention the events or characters of II in turn. To me, this suggested that either Dark Souls II takes place a long time after III (when memory of tradition and old kingdoms has faded), or that these are different branching paths... and I think the cosmology supports the latter notion. The world of Dark Souls II seems more stable. There isn't a lingering oblivion gnawing away at the horizon; we aren't racing the clock against the death of the First Flame. Indeed, the First Flame is hardly ever mentioned. Our chief antagonist is a shard of a broken god, a primordial entity of the abyss coalesced and set on a long, slow campaign to overtake humanity. Combined with how little recollection remains of the events of the original game, I've come to suspect that Dark Souls II takes place after the Chosen Undead embraced an age of dark, only for a new age of fire (or perhaps, of light) to come. We'd be playing on the tail end of that second age of fire, when entropy is mounting and the curse of undeath rises again. It's already made the transition once... possibly several times, in fact. Light and Dark are regarded as more cyclical, and less apocalyptic, and the true conflict is less about the fate of the first flame and more about the fate of humanity, balanced between the curse of undeath, darkness, and transitory light. Dark Souls III, by contrast, really feels like the first game. We walk the ruins of lost cities built by gods, and just like in the first game, the fire is growing dim, and soon will fail entirely. We are in the exact same position as we were in Dark Souls I, only this looming catastrophe has been skirted for millennia, each temporary sacrifice buying a few more generations. The Chosen Undead linked the first flame, and created a tradition of martyrs and sacrifice that have kept the original Age of Fire limping along. Whereas II leaves the resolution of the first game open, there can be no doubt that the Chosen Undead in the original linked the flame when you're playing Dark Souls III. Now, I mentioned that I came up with this theory fairly early in the game, pondering the absence of influence from places in Dark Souls II, but then bit by bit I saw some of them return, creeping into descriptions. You mention the Mirrah set in this video, as well as Forrosa and artifacts from II, like Lucatiel's Hollow-Slayer sword. All I can offer on that account is the suggestion that, in this over-long age of fire, some of the more mundane events that transpired across II's cycles also happened here. New kingdoms arose, a warrior-lord created a nation and then fell, Mirrah and Forrosa came to existence, but maybe didn't develop some of their seminal properties or individuals in this timeline. I want to end this over-long post with just a couple quick questions. -Did anyone else notice statues of what seemed like the Primordial Serpents dressed in priestly robes/hat in Lothric? I seem to recall them between figures of more human individuals on pillars near the Dragonslayer Armor boss fight. -Could Irrithyl of the Boreal valley be Eleum Loyce? They have a similar aesthetic, just in terms of the glorious elegant white armor they're fond of, they're both built over a pit of primordial chaos flame, and they're both scoured with naught but undead and monsters guarding them by the time we arrive. Eleum Loyce might even be a phonetic corruption of Anor Londo, if you stretch things a bit. Not sure what to make of it, if it is so... Irithyll could be be the same location, developing with a Pontiff instead of a Warrior King and a Daughter of Dark?
+Brandon Hawker Actually, it's appearance supports the theory further, As the stone humped hag tells you that the dreg heap is made up of the architecture from every age of every land. I feel that it's not only made up of multiple ages, but also multiple timelines as well. Either that or earthen peak didn't have as much of a presence in DS3's timeline.
Jack Lant You could see it like that. I personally see it as implying Drangleic existed in that timeline, and not having existed in an alternate one, but to each his own I suppose.
About the Sacred Oath miracle, many people think, me included, that there are not 4 people (the Sun, the firstborn, the knight and the dragonslayer) being mentioned in it, but only 3 (the Sun, the firstborn and the dragonslayer): "This is the tale of the Sun's firstborn, his faithful first knight, and the brave dragonslayer who served them both." The comma between "and" and "his faithful first knight" may not be just an Oxford comma. "his faithful first knight" may be explaining "firstborn", with "his" referencing "the Sun" (Gwyn) and "the dragonslayer who served them both" would be Ornstein, who served the firstborn, as his first knight, and the Sun, as the captain of the Four Knights of Gwyn. So what I think the miracle is trying to say is: "This is the tale of Sun's firstborn, [who was] *his* (the Sun's) faithful first knight, and the brave dragonslayer who served them *both* (the Sun and the Sun's firstborn)" I like the Havel theory, but I prefer this theory.
2 things: 1.) if you look at Oceiros' model in an external program, you'll find a human-shaped skeleton rig in his hand 2.) when I first fought Oceiros, I thought that our constant battering resulted in the death of Ocelotte, and in a fit of rage, Oceiros lashes out even more violently than before
The Old Demon King worn out after the final boom reminds me of the fight with Sif in DS1. No cutscene and yet we see them limping after so much. Yet they fight on.
Gotta feel sorry for the curse rotted greatwood imagine the pain it was in and since it was a spirit tree which is a good hearted senteant being it probably thought that It was helping the people now look what happend to it no wonder it's pissed when you meat it.
I had a thought about Havel. If there's evidence to suggest that he plotted to kill a god or multiple gods but was locked away or failed, maybe he searched for more extreme methods. Because Havel despised the dragons right? And if his two closest comrades in arms, The Nameless King and Ornstein, both left everything they previously believed in to take the path of the Dragon, I think Havel would be furious about that. But back to the other point, after being unsuccessful for whatever reason, maybe he thought his only choice left was the way of a demon? We get Havel's ring from the soul of the Stray Demon and after killing him in Archdragon Peak his gear is found in that spot as well. And the Stray Demon is the only demon we find in the game with no fire whatsoever. In fact he seems to be more thematic of rocks or boulders. Maybe Havel took a method to become a demon but because he wasn't a "full" demon to begin with or the chaos flame was already so low that his flame quickly ran out.
The amount of time and effort that goes into these videos is actually amazing. Half the time I can't even follow the lore even when its explained to me because it's still so complicated. Kudos Vaati
7:26 He's actually just both, nameless recruited him his Knight making him the golden lion, which represnts something of nameless, and Gwyn saw ornsteins skill in battle against a dragon and made him the first Knight of the Four knights of Gwyn
My heart breaks, listening to all these stories... What a compelling but a sad world the Dark Souls creators made. Thank you for all the awesome videos
My own personal lore is that Ornstein became a dragon so splendid and strong he was named the Storm Drake. And him being absorbed by the King he worshiped is just the cycle repeating of him leveling up his partner in battle.
Nioh is better. An oni is an eastern demon, not a dragon. Most commonly depicted as a red-skinned, man-eating, giant of a creature, standing roughly 10-18ft tall, with superhuman strength, claws, and a love for booze
In front of the chest that holds the Reversal Ring, I put down a message that said "Treasure ahead! And then trap." Treasure ahead... and *then* trap. Not "trap ahead and then treasure". But no one got the joke and just down voted it.
Hey Vati; Havel is not just standing next to a dead wyvern/ dragon, but near the living one which perches on the wall within meters. He defends a slab which is placed almost like a flower at a grave.
When you talk about "cycles" and why Ornstein is alive, I think the answer is actually that any optional boss is alive and continue to live. Ornstein was an illusion in Dark Souls and in Dark Souls 2, he is optional, so he continued he's journey to search the Nameless King, just as Priscilla didn't died by the player
I liked the theory for the nameless king being Ferrosa. Another clue you could use for that is the whole lion knight symbol, especially when you consider who his loyal first knight is, who wears a helmet in the the shape of a lion head and wears the leo ring. Now I admit, he probably became king before Ornstein went out to find him, but there is an interesting similarity there don't you think?
Fun fact about life Hunt, I’m semi-certain that the spell you can get from Aldrich is called the life hunt scythe. It makes sense for him to have it because he is the devourer of gods, so maybe that’s something.

How can someone even hit dislike on a video like this. Literally it's here to give you entertainment and knowledge about a game that clearly you play. Like damn I don't understand the Internet these days.
Some people don't like Vaati because of some issues that happened previously, others do it because his views might be completely opposing theirs (And alot of people tend to take Vaati's interpretation as the one-true interpretation), others do it for no real reason.
This is super late but my idea on Oceiros is that the baby is an illusion formed by the queen, who took the Ocelot away with her. (he can't see so it seems to just be a physical, yet invisible illusion for whatever reason) In the boss fight, he keeps calling for Ofel I think Ocelot is Prince Lothric, as that seems to be his title, rather his name, and his pale, clawed appearance. I'm not sure about any age differences to the twins and dragon child, and it seems strange that all this is happening as the child is still a baby. I know about the game models, but I'd like to have a confirmation if the boss fight is censored or not.
This is also super late but Ocelotte was actually censored in the final release of the game because if you play the alpha version you can still see the baby in his hands and when he smashes it to the ground it becomes very bloody and bruised so they censored it to avoid controversy most likely. The lines where he says things like, "Where are you my dear little Ocelotte", and, "Come out, there's no need to hide", were added at the last minute to make it not seem as confusing when wondering what baby he was talking about. there's a video on it by some dude that talks about all the cut ideas and content of Dark Souls 3 if you want to learn more.
Old content that was never used because it was to gorey and traffic to show a infant baby being smashed into the grounds apparently. It's available in the game files though just a unfinished baby
I love your vids man, the transitions between shots and how cinematic you make everything look really makes it a treat watching. Greetings from Austria.
This thought popped into my head while rewatching this video, You mention in previous videos that size is more a representation of power in Souls games. Bearing that in mind, Ornstein’s discarded armor and the nameless king’s unique mount could be clues to the fate of Ornstein. Perhaps, Ornstein’s loyalty caused him to complete the path of the dragon and transform into the Lord of Storm who The Nameless King rides into battle. The forlorn touch when he’s slain is obviously Nameless saying goodbye to a trusted and loyal friend, whether it be just a dragon or the transformed Ornstein.
You know I just realized the way the nameless king claims the soul when the Oni dies seems scarily similar to when smough or ornatein claim each other after the other falls
thats the reason i believe the theory stating ornstein dropped his armor, became a dragon, a very powerful one and teamed up with the firstborn once again. pretty sure the absorbtion thing is unique to the age of gods
Maybe Ornstein is the King of the Storm. After all, if he discarded his armor and weapon in the arena we fight Nameless in, and we are assuming he walked the Path of the Dragon, who really knows how far transformed one can become? Not only that King of the Storms is unique looking, and Nameless treated him as a friend, and he powers up like Smough does when we kill the Storm Drake. Just a thought.
It isn't. The storm drake was tamed during the dragon war. The weapon and armour descriptions tell you so.

There were many cycles and many ages. There isn't anything saying Crazy's theory could not be true. But that line of thought opens many other possibilities; Like Nameless never existed (is just a tale, told on and on for some reason) or Gwyn killed him so Ornstein is taking it's place... Or he became a dragon. It would also explain why a certain person is seeking it's own sun. I think it's a good theory.

Drn Montemayor I just ignore people who shits over ds2 so, have a nice day.
I say the King of Storm is actually Ornstein. HEAR ME OUT . When u find Ornstein's armor and weapon there is no body that u pick it from, Now the NK could have picked him up with his spear and yeeted him across the map, but the dragon people are what u look like on the path of the dragon. Now I think that the King of Storm is someone who fully went through the entire transformation. And plus on Ornstein's Adventure, he could have gotten corrupted by the abyss also meaning that u can use Artorias sword for 20% extra dmg to the King of Storm.

You know, it just sprang to mind that Oceiros's queen might have just taken Ocelot and left the blind dragon king with an illusion of their child. One focused on touch, smell and sound rather than sight.
Plot Twist: Seath is actually Ocelotte. Blah blah the flow of time is convoluted blah
I kind of agree with this theory. I think his wife left with the child because Oceiros had gone insane. He was an abusive father and husband and she ran away with the kid.

It makes me think about how much trust there must be between The Nameless king and The king of Storms. The king will constantly use attacks that are imbued with lightning, often striking near the dragons head, and yet they fight together beautifully
Since it is a storm drake it might be a bit more resistant to lightning then the rest of dragon kind

I watched a video of a modder who pitted these two against each other Havel Vs NK, no HP or damage buffs to either, and Havel was incredibly close to killing NK, the reason Havel failed was he took time to Rock Up and that lower mobility was his ultimate downfall.
Stormdrake?
Havel + Nameless King = NAVAL KING!
the voice acting for Oceiros is phenomenal, for some reason he's my favorite boss. His tragic story and the boss fight music are so melancholic.
He’s fucking terrifying I dreaded that fight on my 2nd run today. His voice acting is really good but the character is horrifying,
Tbh, who even has bad voice acting in ds3? I think they all did beautiful jobs with the voices
He sounds a little like Benedict Cumberbatch
The reason Ocelot is "invisible" is actually kinda dark. In an early version of the game, the character model was actually there, but From decided that a deranged half dragon smashing a baby into the ground was a bit to brutal, so they removed the model and all the sound files related to said smashing. Don't think you can find the video, but the sound files are floating around.
But From decided it's aight to have a little girl jump out a window and kill herself and also killing a baby great one to get its umbilical cord
I don't think that's too brutal for Fromsoft. It's more likely that they removed it because having children harmed onscreen would get your game banned in lots of countries.
@@lekhaclam87 thats what too brutal means lol
@@buckyhurdle4776 Not as brutal as being eaten alive slowly by a black sludge. Besides, the kid is a dragon hybrid. I'm sure he can survive worse.
Ocelotte isn't invisible. There is nothing in Oceiros's hand.
adding to the theory of ornstein discarding his armor to begin the transformation to a dragon: what if he did not only go through with it, but also became the most powerful of them and transformed into the giant bird thing the nameless king is riding on?
the swirly horns of the big bird and dragon head stone users look quite similar.
that would also fit ornstein being the firstborn's faithful knight as he still stands by his side.
plus he gets smashed and absorbed by his 'duo partner' once again.
Ahahha thats a nice theory
Not only that I always thought that In Dark Souls 1 he was just an Illusion like everything else since he had already departed to find the Nameless King
I have always thought that to be the case. The hint of the Storm Curved Sword was what convinced me that was it. His power absorbed by his master and mentor for that final fight just as the Old Gods of Anor Londo always did. There's three clues pointing to it, and none disputing it. I'll take it as my canon. It would also explain his powers of lightning shining through even his Dragon Form, which as far as I know is not only unique, but downright contradictory to all other dragon nature. It fits with his lightning imbued dragonslayer background well.
also the Ost of the nameless king its quite similar to Orstein And Smough OST
Estevao guys, this one might be a long comment but I highly recommend reading it.
Estevao Hell yeah it gave me so much more feels when i heard the cut audio of Ocelot, it made me litteraly say "Well shit"

It's a tragedy.

what i like about Dark souls, is that not only the knowledge is locked away in item descriptions, which you might not even find in your playthrough, but also once your found the item and read its lore, you never need another break down or explanation about them !
Old demon king state is really sad
I was looking for this comment. It reminded me a lot of the final state of Great Wolf Sif.

@@thelichking9070 It's possible Ornstein gave Gwyndolin a fraction of his soul to fuel the illusion
@@LiqquidAss Havel was a single knight but he also had many followers

Krim And, just like Creighton, she doesn't kill him because he came from some fallen kingdom, but for completely different reasons
She never really elaborates what those reasons are.
Nicolás Vivar similar to "ornstein is the stormdrake", there's not even a hint in the lore of that.
Maxenfelter
King of the storm does have that charged lightning slam, and the lightning bolt he throws while he's flying around.

Everytime I see one of your videos all I think is just how good a book the Dark Souls series would make haha
I think the souls lore is highly dependant on placement of items and and visual hints that would be very hard to pull off in a book
Maybe a movie or a video game? Wait...
Thanks for the suggestion, I guess I'll check it out! :D
Lord Gwyn granted this soul to his four most trusted knights."
As you can read right here Ornstein's soul was granted this soul by Gwyn.
TheLastSound I am also pretty sure that there was a theory that Ornstein in DS1 was an illusion and the actual one left with gwynevere
Interesting, thanks for that tidbit

I like that theory
Also, the Nameless King's headwear resembles that of a lion mane.
Erathvael how da fuck no one reply (8months later)
Erathvael Unfortunately the appearance of Earthen Peak in the second DLC for Dark Souls 3 takes a huge amount of credibility from this amazing theory.
Also, there is a Tree of Giants at Firelink and Drangleic castle can be seen before the Slave Knight Gael boss fight.
About the Sacred Oath miracle, many people think, me included, that there are not 4 people (the Sun, the firstborn, the knight and the dragonslayer) being mentioned in it, but only 3 (the Sun, the firstborn and the dragonslayer):
"This is the tale of the Sun's firstborn, his faithful first knight, and the brave dragonslayer who served them both."
The comma between "and" and "his faithful first knight" may not be just an Oxford comma.
So what I think the miracle is trying to say is:
"This is the tale of Sun's firstborn, [who was] *his* (the Sun's) faithful first knight, and the brave dragonslayer who served them *both* (the Sun and the Sun's firstborn)"
I like the Havel theory, but I prefer this theory.
Ah, so you're saying that "his faithful first knight" acts as an appositive for the Sun's firstborn.. Nice theory
Savage JR
Exactly.
That is possible as Ornstein is described as serving both of them.
That seems to make alot more sense. Somebody should check out the Japanese version, maybe it´s just the translation that made it ambigous.
This is very interesting. I wonder what the original japanese said.
2 things:
1.) if you look at Oceiros' model in an external program, you'll find a human-shaped skeleton rig in his hand
2.) when I first fought Oceiros, I thought that our constant battering resulted in the death of Ocelotte, and in a fit of rage, Oceiros lashes out even more violently than before
Sounds fair enough to me, hoping the DLC can shed more light on this, DS3 has left me with more questions than answers
The rig could exist to make it more simple to animate Oceiros' movements while holding the invisible baby that might or might not exist.
that's fair, but I still prefer my theory
I hope Ocelotte wasn't there at all, I want him in the DLC! :D The evidence do seem to be in your favour though.
Plausible
Well...i never thought of this

@@youseyong9114 but your the one walking in to where he was he was just defending himself
Fun fact about life Hunt, I’m semi-certain that the spell you can get from Aldrich is called the life hunt scythe. It makes sense for him to have it because he is the devourer of gods, so maybe that’s something.
The ad before the video was for a mattress called the Solaire.
Just.. how even 😑
The Nameless King, aka From Software's How to Train Your Dragon
first born: I have to tell you something father.
gwyn: what is it my son?
firstborn: I like dragons
Gwyn:.......fuck you
first born: but dad! dragons are FUCKING METAL!
gwyn: DRAGONS ARE FUCKING STUPID! just get out of here! go! Get out of my face! I never want to see you again!
gwyndolin: father I have something I need to tell you.
gwyn: oh my me! what is it now! do you like dragons too?
gwyndolin: dragons? No those are fucking dumb, no dad I'm a woman trapped in a man's body
gwyn: ......so you hate dragons?
gwyndolin: yup
gwyn:then we're good, do whatever you want
Ok
Seath: Umm should I not be here for this?
gwundlin wasnt raised with big lightning daddyo around. he was raised by feminists, thas why hes a cross dresser
Glod.
Gwenavere: Hey dad I have something to tell you too.
Gwen: For the love of the sun don't tell me you like dragons.
Gwenavere: Weeeeeell, I like _a_ dragon.
*Seath smirks in the background*
I like to think that Ornstein became the Storm Drake, it adds quite a bit more to the “stab cutscene” in that fight
People who disliked it thought: Dis I like :D
+thebeyblademaniac But he has a disclaimer that these are 100% just his and some of the community's opinions.
Everytime Ocerios says Ocelotte I keep expecting Revolver Ocelot to pop out and flip his gun around a bit and then shoot the DARPA chief or something.
i yell "Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakeeeeeeeee!!!!!"
And then you say "you're prety good" and shit xD
_furious gun spinning_
This is super late but my idea on Oceiros is that the baby is an illusion formed by the queen, who took the Ocelot away with her. (he can't see so it seems to just be a physical, yet invisible illusion for whatever reason)
In the boss fight, he keeps calling for Ofel
I think Ocelot is Prince Lothric, as that seems to be his title, rather his name, and his pale, clawed appearance.
I dunno, I hear the crying in the fight
@@yamnbam4346 Yeah, you can watch Lance Mcdonalds most recent video and it talks about all the cut content and enemies in Dark Souls 3
@@SkullPlaysDestiny Yam N Bam You can go into game files and hear the crying directly, without any other noises.
This thought popped into my head while rewatching this video,
You mention in previous videos that size is more a representation of power in Souls games.
The forlorn touch when he’s slain is obviously Nameless saying goodbye to a trusted and loyal friend, whether it be just a dragon or the transformed Ornstein.
... so
sunbro is
is not the Sun's Firstborn...?
Oh Vaati, why must you break my heart so
no he was the storm king so he could be closer to the sun
Technically, Andre was supposed to be the first born.
No he isn't, but that just makes Solaire more epic as all the things he acomplished came from 100% pure skill
You could probably push Solaire as an Amnesiac Nameless King if you really wanna stretch the lore.
Solaire was serving Nameless King. He was not Sun's Firstborn, but he was really close to him.
These videos were so damn interesting! Playing through the game now and feel connected to the world a lot more as a result. Great work!
You know I just realized the way the nameless king claims the soul when the Oni dies seems scarily similar to when smough or ornatein claim each other after the other falls
Always been curious as to how that works
thats the reason i believe the theory stating ornstein dropped his armor, became a dragon, a very powerful one and teamed up with the firstborn once again. pretty sure the absorbtion thing is unique to the age of gods
It's just weird that smogh can do it. I'm curious.
he ate my waifu. so i ended his laifu. it's snowing on mt fuji.
I did not expect a game grumps refernce
I didn't know this was a reference, but I laughed like a maniac. Such a beautiful haiku.
👌
That haiku is 5 7 7... I'm assuming it's a game grumps reference. But come on.
@@noname_whatsoever it's not a haiku. Syllables are off

Ashen One: Slam Dunk!
Ocelotte : wait what-
Maybe Ornstein is the King of the Storm.
Exactly what I thought
Thought the same thing!
